Unfortunately the Railway Inn is still closed with apparently no date for reopening. The Railway Inn is owned by Samuel Smith's brewery and no further information is available.

We've called in a couple of times recently after golf at Spofforth. Warm welcome and friendly chat with the landlord and locals. Fantastic fish and chips - as good as you'll get anywhere. Pork pies also very good. Still sometimes bike to Spofforth from Wetherby on the former railway route - been coming here for years ith the kids. Really great value for money too thanks.

We called in to the Railway Inn during a cycle ride . We were warmly welcomed into a quiet, traditional style pub. There is a beer garden and large car park. We chose their most popular dish, fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce. It was delicious, the best I have had in a long time- crispy batter, beautiful cod, well cooked chips. This was washed down with a couple of pints of local ale and a pint of cider. Excellent value as well . Can highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

Visited here yesterday whilst out for the day on an English Heritage day out and decided to stop for lunch and was one of the only two pubs in the village but we were ready for something to eat. Parking was ample and we were greeted by the very jovial landlord but was surprised when we asked for a menu that they old served Sunday roasts on a Sunday and nothing else. Thought there might have been some light snacks or sandwiches if you didn't want a roast on a hot Summers Day. We opted to have the Sunday roast which was very nice and well worth the money and the beer was very welcoming also. Noticed that there were a few signs up banning the use of mobile phones whilst in the bar, which we thought was a good idea so that you were not disturbed by text messages and the likes. Overall a very nice quaint little village pub set in a lovely location and well worth the money.

It was a hot summer evening at around 6:50; ready for a pint and a bite to eat. We see the pub on the left with a big chalked sign showing FOOD available until 8:30. Did a u-turn and parked up. In we went and ordered our drinks and asked for the menu. “Sorry, no food tonight as it is Dominoes night!” I asked if I could order a cheese sandwich instead, so off the barman goes and returns with the news that the cheese is frozen and they can do tuna instead. It was pathetic and the sign was grossly misleading; it was like something out of Monty Python and all that was missing was John Cleese ordering cheese in a cheese shop devoid of cheese. I won’t be returning to this pub!

Remember when you walked into a pub & ordered a pint of bitter. If you were a real ale drinker that would be all they would have. Round here that meant Tetley or John Smith. Choice? well none unless you wanted a rather bland lager. The Railway is just like that except the beer is Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Bitter. Nothing else on hand pull. None of the high strength highly hopped beers that I tend to go for. Who cares when the solitary beer is as good as & as well kept as this. If you ever want to bring a visitor to these shores to a typical English pub for pint of typical English beer you need look no further. We have had a revolution in brewing with all the small breweries to the detriment of the large brewers. Watneys, Whitbread, Worthington where are you now. Well it's your own fault for not brewing beer as good as Samuel Smiths. Oh & did I say a pint cost £2. That's not a missprint. A pint of Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Bitter perfectly kept & served costs just £2

We stayed near here so popped in for an hour or so and really glad we did. What a lovely pub. The staff were chatty and friendly, as were the regulars and the beer was beautiful. The pub is a Sam Smith pub so it is very cheap and the beer is good. If you fancy a quick pint or a night of friendly chat I would recommend dropping in The Railway, you will not be disappointed

We have a drink here as part of our walks or bike rides, primarily to give the second village pub some business. Typically time warped Sam Smiths pub but in a good way. Although the brewery needs to invest in the beer garden.

We chose soup which we thorougly enjoyed and tasted home made. We were made welcome with our two greyhounds as there was provision in the bar area for dogs. Many locals in there and we enjoyed some pleasant conversation in addition to the food.

Fine for an informal pub meal with friends. Staff very pleasant, food freshly cooked. However if you want fish it has to be ordered the day before ! And wine not available by the bottle. Windows look a little bare: curtains would add a warmer touch.

I like to call in here either during a family walk along the old railway or when I have cricket things to do in the village. It's a Sam Smiths pub so the drinks are fiercely independent and very cheap - don't go expecting TV or music. The Old Brewery Bitter is well kept and is my drink of choice when in there. It has been recently decorated and there are some interesting old photographs of the village on the walls. The staff are all friendly and welcoming. In the summer, the fairly large beer garden is quite pleasant.

Really terrible,We ate here (successfully) many years ago and even though I'd forgotten how limited the range of drinks are in a Sam Smiths pub we decided to give it another go while we were visiting friends last weekend... It was horrendous! We found ourselves in fits of laughter about how bad it was, especially towards the end of our nearly TWO HOUR wait for food... Between our two families we have 5 children, 3 of which are quite young and the time it took to get anything was frankly embarrassing - I'll try to do it justice... We arrived just before 6pm and were told by the young lad behind the bar (he was quite friendly) that they started taking food orders at 6pm so we checked out the menu and ordered at about 6:01, there were only 3 other people in the pub at this time, a couple of reps who had ordered a main each and another man who was only drinking and didn't order food. Our garlic bread arrived after about 45 mins (I'd asked for it to come out as sson as it was ready) and it took the other couple 50 minutes before they got their food, at which point I enquired as to how long our mains would be (we had ordered 7 mains and 3 portions of garlic bread), I was told aprox 10 mins, the delay being due to our food having to be cooked entirely from fresh (but we couldn't have a smaller portion of the lasagne for the children because errr....errrr.....)... We took the children out in to the back garden of the pub (no play equipment but grass for them to run off their boredom) and 30 mins later went back in to enquire where this food was... By this point, the friendly (somewhat embarrassed) young lad had been replaced with an older man who didn't seem to take kindly to me asking where 7 (very simple) mains were after an hour and a half wait, to which he stated "You must've ordered the Brie a we have to cook that from fresh..." (which we hadn't!) confirming what we expected, our food was being brought back to life from frozen by a microwave somewhere.... We suggested that it may have been helpful (seeing as we had small children in tow who were now past their bed time and we hadn't even eaten yet) to have let us know when we ordered 7 meals that it would take almost 2 hours for the food to arrive and we would've gone elsewhere - this was met with a rather grumpy "how are we to know how long it would take"!! Anyway, almost 2 hours after we had ordered, our mains turned up - a frozen lasagne annihilated in a microwave (both missing the garlic bread that was supposed to accompany it), two chicken and ham pies which could've been 'fresh' at some point in the last 10 years -maybe- and again were microwaved (with soggy yet weirdly hard to cut pastry) with a just palatable filling, 2 chilli dishes which were admittedly ok but didn't have anything they were supposed to come with - nachos, guacamole, soured cream etc and finally, a bland, flat cold horrid chicken burger which was the weirdest shape I've ever seen - like a wedge of cheese....! Most of these were served with a dollop of cold, chewy cabbage and / or some tasteless chips! When we enquired about the missing garlic bread and nacho accompaniments we were told that we'd had our garlic bread quota with our starter bread an hour before (which didn't add up) and that she didn't have any guacamole but could find us some nachos - she did and they were either way out of date or had been open for days... We left and went back home to eat more! We were starving so ate what we could

I hadn't visited The Railway in Spofforth for several years as the food suddenly went rapidly downhill due to Sam Smith's strange self-destruct policy :-( As a regular diner at the Castle up the road, and aware of that pubs current lack of food following...

We came by this place by chance. We're from Essex but had been at a wedding in nearby Harrogate and stayed the night in nearby Wetherby. Unfortunately we couldn't have a meal here as they weren't doing meals on the evening we came by it. The pub is owned by a local brewery who only served their own drinks at very reasonable prices (my husband's beer only cost £1.50 and my wine not much more). Unfortunately we couldn't eat here but stayed for a drink anyway- well you just have to in a place like this. The pub is so traditional, spotlessly clean and reminds you of the days when landlords took pride in their pubs as if it was their castle. The bartender was as broad Yorkshire as the pub and looked after us so well. The wine was as good as I'd find anywhere I haven't seen a pub like this in a very long time. It's someone's pride and joy and hats off to them. It's a shame there aren't many pubs like this anymore.

We visited this pub while staying in nearby Wetherby. The menu has a good selection of pub food, we had the lasagne and pulled pork nachos which were both excellent value and tasty. The landlord was helpful and accommodated our request for our 1 year old daughter with no problems. We really liked the relaxed atmosphere of this pub and it was the best meal we had during our stay in Yorkshire. There is a lovely beer garden around the back of the pub and we would have liked to have stayed longer. Spofforth Castle, further down the road towards the village is also worth a look.

We came upon this little gem by chance after coming off the A1 at Wetherby, on our way to The Yorkshire Dales. Having decided to just stop at the first pub we came across, I am so glad that this unassuming little pub was it.It was so cosy and warm with the real fire going, and just felt welcoming from the start.I chose the Whitby Scampi and Chips and my husband and Dad both went for the lamb curry. They both said it was one of the best curries they had had. The prices were really reasonable - main courses were around £6 -£7 and puddings were around £3-£4. A lot cheaper than most of the pubs in Essex where I live and those we later ate in when in The Dales. Also the beer was cheap - and good (so I was informed by my husband) - £1.35 for a mild and £1.80 for bitter.Had a lovely chat with a local lady who was very friendly, as was the barman. If you live nearby or are passing through on your way to The Dales and like good, honest pub food call in. You wont regret it.

We live close to the Railway and are used to a frequent flux of managers and therefore quality of the food, but the pub itself has always remained a friendly venue, cosy welcoming atmosphere and family friendly too. The current landlord (2014) has a great selection of food, cooked to order, great selection and at a price to almost match the beer. It's standard pub grub, so not somewhere to go if you're looking for fancy a la carte, however, if you've been visiting family, the castle, out for bike ride, or walk it's a great pub to come back to.

The Railway is a Samuel Smith's pub, which to those from outside the Yorkshire area may well be something of a novelty. A pint costs £1.80 and is well kept. The staff here are friendly and the atmosphere is very traditional with two real coal fires in the winter (not those disappointing gas look-a-likes), a plush lounge and a rather spartan public bar. The food I haven't yet tried yet the menu does look tempting.Perhaps the best asset is the dismantled railway at the back which offers a nice walk from Wetherby. The Railway ends this walk nicely and offers a rewarding pint at the end of a cold walk.A very charming little pub and a firm favourite of mine.

Been loathe I have to admit to try Sam Smith's food after years of disappointment with low grade, frozen rubbish.Bullet bitten last night and, I have to say, was more than pleasantly surprised with the offerings. Chick pea, sweet potato and spinach curry and ham, egg and chips. Good no nonsense food and excellent value for money.Usual Sam Smith's beers on offer at the usual amazing low prices and a friendly welcoming atmosphere. If you're looking for miniscule nouvelle cuisine type helpings piled up in oversized soup bowls then this place is not for you, if you're after no nonsense food at realistic prices then you won't be disappointed.Go on, take the plunge!!

We chose here to eat while travelling 400 miles from Aberdeen to Wacton in our electric car. The food was good. The staff were friendly but service was slow. My wife had soup and I had a main. That took about 40-45 minutes. I then had to go and move the car. When I left we asked the staff if my wife could order a sweet. We explained we were rushing. When I can back she still hadn't got it. By the time she got it we had been there a good 1hr 15 min. Disappointing as no notice was taken of our polite indication we were rushing.

Stopped here as it allowed overnights with Motorhomes if you buy food. The car park was almost full but I managed to squeeze my van onto a space. The staff were very friendly, the food was good, my rib eye steak was tough and dry (medium rare looked good but still tough) thankfully I had beef dripping as a sauce which was delicious, especially when the chips soaked it up. but everything else was really nice. The final bill £152 for 3x3 courses and drinks (3 ales, 2 wines 3 cokes) which I felt was on the slightly high side. I would happily return in the future.

Handy for a cuppa after work or during a shop. The cafe is situated in the simply food store and it’s clients are generally local. Good service and bright and airy cafe. Huge windows mean it gets very hot in sunny weather. No outside seating.
