The Kestrel in Harrogate

Stopped here as it allowed overnights with Motorhomes if you buy food. The car park was almost full but I managed to squeeze my van onto a space. The staff were very friendly, the food was good, my rib eye steak was tough and dry (medium rare looked good but still tough) thankfully I had beef dripping as a sauce which was delicious, especially when the chips soaked it up. but everything else was really nice. The final bill £152 for 3x3 courses and drinks (3 ales, 2 wines 3 cokes) which I felt was on the slightly high side. I would happily return in the future.

We had a family get together and chose The Kestrel because of its convenience and reviews. Great decision. Nice atmosphere and great food. Staff very pleasant particularly Emma who looked after us. Highly recommended.

We stayed here the Sunday night of Leeds Festival. We were offered a early check in that was great. Got two keys for both our rooms which were lovely and spacious. The pub downstairs was full of character. So far we couldn't fault it. However after returning (around 10:30pm so not that late) i had realized id left one of the keys in one of the rooms. We only had one and there was 3 people with no fresh clothes and having to share one bed/room. Totally my fault but you would think i would be able to ring the porter to get in. However there was no answer. We tried periodically through the night and not one time did we get through. In the morning around 8:30am i went down and explained. I asked if the night porter was in and was told a blunt 'yes' by the lad working behind the bar for breakfast, i told him id rang a number of times which didn't get a response. Obviously this didn't sit well with me Its water under the bridge but its very worrying. If there had been a serious emergency its worrying knowing that no body would've been available to help

Unfortunately, we did not enjoy our dining experience at all. The food was mediocre. My mother's seabass was overcooked as was my fish. My partner had a burger, which he couldn't finish eating. The food tasted as though no care had gone into the preparation and cooking of our meals. It'll be the last time we visit The Kestrel!

Great service from Francesca, went above and beyond to help us redeem the ‘carrots on sticks’ offered by head office, but which in reality needed a phd in IT to use and process. She was attentive but not intrusive, patient and helpful, (even brought me a selection of beer mats ☺️)thanks Francesca for making our dining experience A*

Much improved… we have been visiting ‘The Kestrel’ for many years and it’s had its ups and downs… I feel now is the time for a positive review… It is now headed up by Louise (The Manager) she is working hard at getting things back on track… she has improved things that at one point stopped us visiting for either a drink or a meal ‘Hats Off’ to her for sorting things out and her dedication to make inroads for improvements and motivate her team.. Louise genuinely wants you to have a good experience and to re visit. We went for Sunday Lunch (teatime) today and everything was cooked perfectly. A special mention and thank you to Gemma and Julie - they are invaluable team members and always serve you with a smile and have a chat even when it is busy…. Thank you to you all… we will return again soon…

Do not stay with this company they are rip off merchants and their reservations team especially Mitchell have no respect for their customers. I’ll never stay with them ever again. The room smelt of bleach and walls are so thin you could hear your neighbours watching tv at night… ridiculous!

What a pleasure.From beginning to end.My husband and I stayed here for two nights.The service from all staff was excellent,however one gentleman went over and above.On returning home to Wales I realised I had left a garment carrier behind with a dress in,but the most important was attached a brooch of great sentimental value.The gentleman in question,boxed and posted it back to me.What a pleasure to know there are still some very nice people about.The whole expereince at The Kestrel was excellent.Many Thanks.

Excellent service from everyone, excellent food, excellent value for money! Went expecting average pub grub and was really really impressed! The staff were fantastic. Worth a visit.

Was on a break with friends in Harrogate stopping at the premier inn, its restaurant was closed due to staff shortage, so we shopped around and found The Kestrel pub. When we arrived we were greeted by the friendly staff and seated. Our waitress came over and let us know that a couple of things were not available. The service was very good , and the food was very good also, the portions were large.

Very sad really. Lovely setting, service was good, but the food has gone downhill pretty quickly. Some hot shot at the top needs replacing and sooner rather than later.

The Sunday lunch was average in terms of quality and quantity and at nearly £20 it was not cheap. Everything all piled up in a heap on the plate. The vegetarian option was particularly poor - it was small and had less vegetables with it than the meat version!! Service was inattentive albeit it was busy.

Four of us booked a table for 12.15pm, Our orders for drinks and food were taken within 10 minutes - one starter and four main dishes. The starter arrived after about 20 minutes. We then had a very long wait till we received our main courses - at about 1.15pm. We asked the waitress what had happened to our meals and were told that the kitchen staff were not given the orders for the table's main courses until 20 minutes after the starter had been served. She said this was 'the system'. We complained about this and another member of staff - a manager? - came and said the delay between starter and main course was 30 minutes and that the person taking our order initially should have told us about these time gaps. Nothing had been said at the time of ordering - had we known, one of our group would have foregone his starter! When we had finished our main courses - the food was fine - we were asked if we wanted any puddings. I asked what the time delay would be and was told 20 - more - minutes. We chose to skip this final wait, paid and left. Our part of the restaurant area was also rather chilly. We won't be going back.

Being regular visitors to the Kestrel we visited last night for a nice saturday evening meal. I asked the waitress what the specials were and was told what the soup was, the pie of the day was chicken and pancetta but there was only one left and then the pie would be beef. Unable to decide I asked again was she sure there were no specials, oh she said there is belly pork and mash! My husband ordered the fish and chips and I asked if it was possible to order the beef pie, she told me no that couldn't be ordered until the last chicken pie had been sold, which seems bizarre! I reluctantly ordered the Hunters chicken which when it arrived didn't look appetizing, there was a small amount of cheese on which was dried up, the bacon was so crispy it crumbled when cut into. My husbands fish was poor, the edges were very crispy and little fish, the middle was OK! When the waitress came to ask if everything was ok we said it wasn't up to the usual standard to which she pulled a face and said sorry!!! When we had finished she came and said did we want the dessert menu, the bill or another drink, which seemed a bit abrupt and as if we were being rushed. We said we would like more drinks and that we had a complimentary cocktail, I ordered as Mojito and was asked what flavour (strawberry, passion fruit or another). I said I didn't know you could get different flavours? Anyway ordered a passion fruit one, she came later and said she was sorry for the delay but they had to get margarita mix to make the mojito, I was even more confused by this as I understood mojito's contained bacardi, mint, sugar, lime and soda??? We got the impression that the staff were not of the usual standard and experience that we usually experience when visiting the Kestrel which is a couple of times a month.

The ambience of the place was lovely. The staff were attentative, and the food was extremely good. Wendy couldn't do enough for us even though the place was busy. The food was more than adequate belly pork delicious, as was the gravy. Lasagne well presented and full of flavour. Well done guys when we're next in the area, we will return.

The four of us had main courses and desserts. It was bookings only as short staffed. The lady who served us was attentive.The food was delicious. Just feel embarrassed as we only live in knaresborough and it was our first visit,but not the last!

We came as a group, pre booked. I'm glad we did as non booked people were being turned away, which is a shame. The service was very slow and when the mains finally arrived, there were numerous items not quite right, including the unlimited gravy, it was cold!! My thoughts are, with more staff, particularly in the kitchen, it would be good. The menu is good as are the Real Ales. May return but there are plenty of others.

Rude staff, don’t bother. No interest in their customers. Never been to a pub before which has signs up saying don’t come in we don’t want you.

If I could give 0 starts I would. On arrival all seemed good. The pub is beautiful with views to match. That’s where the good stuff ends and where I wished we hadn’t got out of the car. We sit at our table and order starters which were ok but very small in portion when you look at the accompanying price tag. Now the main course. 3 of us had ordered steak. One steak came out perfect the rest came out over cooked so we sent 2 back. My husband and children carried on eating. Not once did anyone come back to the table and acknowledge our wait or apologise for any inconvenience caused. After a whole 20 minutes had gone by they eventually brought out the steaks they were cooked ok but myself and daughter were that hungry it might as well have been a burger. We then had dessert which was ok and asked for the bill. There was no apology at all and Emma the duty manager at the bar was quite rude. She offered us a round of drinks on the house but couldn’t take off the steaks as they are “premium products”. Then adding “well you enjoyed your second one” that wasn’t the point. We went out for a family meal and wanted to eat together which we didn’t get to do. If I wanted to eat in sittings I would go to a school canteen. Now I understand that businesses need to make money it’s been a tough few years. We were getting nowhere so decided to take the offer of a round of drinks off and we also used a 20% off voucher. This combined was still £80 and we didn’t have alcohol. All in all avoid this pub at all costs. We are currently emailing head office about the meal and subpar service.

When visiting The Kestrel pub and restaurant on Sunday, one of the first things that struck me was the excellent service. Efficiency was a clear priority, but it was balanced with warm and attentive hospitality, making us feel right at home. The food quality, it goes without saying, was impressive. The portion sizes were generous and well worth the price. My wife chose the pork Sunday roast, and it was a real treat. The plate was laden with an ample amount of succulent pork, vibrant, well-cooked vegetables, and delectable roast potatoes. For my part, I opted for the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly fried to a golden-brown crisp, yet maintaining the succulent softness inside. The chips were equally delightful - chunky, crispy on the outside, and perfectly fluffy on the inside. It's clear that The Kestrel has mastered the art of traditional pub fare. So satiated were we with our main courses, we found ourselves unable to even contemplate ordering a pudding, despite the tantalising options on the dessert menu. We opted instead to finish our meal with coffee, which was very good - rich, aromatic, and provided a perfect end note to our meal. Lastly, I cannot complete this review without giving a special shout-out to the beer. The Kestrel serves a very good pint of Black Sheep - a testament to the pub's commitment to quality even in its drink selections. Keeping a good beer is indeed a skill that is often underrated, but The Kestrel clearly takes pride in this aspect, maintaining the highest standards. In conclusion, our visit to The Kestrel was a splendid experience filled with outstanding service, high-quality food, and superb beverages. Whether you're a food enthusiast or a craft beer lover, The Kestrel certainly won't disappoint. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a wonderful pub and dining experience.

Wow, what a gem. A pub restaurant that cooks food from fresh. No microwaved frozen offerings here and a nice price too. Plenty of choices on the menu and staff were very efficient too!
