Great little venue for light lunch and a beer! Mainly outdoor seating at present, but plenty of umbrellas and indoor area for shade or keeping dry. Easy access from water using hire boats, canoes etc for visitors - worth a visit, but don’t expect ‘fine dining’ choices - good basic stuff! Rob and Sue + staff very welcoming. Lots of boat activity from dinghies to small cargo ships to watch.

We visited a number of times whist moored up at Penmarlam The ‘full English’ was excellent. Well cooked, quality ingredients and great value. The bacon sandwiches ( real bacon sandwiches) just as good. The house white was also very enjoyable . A great experience and good to meet Trevor the owner and to enjoy his company and wit👍

I had been meaning to visit this little cafe on the water for some time.It is a great spot in a quiet secluded branch of the river Fowey. My wife and I visited by boat on a beautiful sunny day and with its table and chairs out front it reminded us of the South of France. Our mood matched the setting and were looking forward to sitting on the terrace and quietly enjoying the view. The gentlemen who runs this establishment clearly has mental issues. I like to think I have a good sense of humour and any friendly joking was immediately extinguished by the owner. By simply asking if he was open he began to exert his dominance in a vain attempt to show his authority as owner. . At first we thought he was just being funny and were convinced it was a Basil Faulty act but after a further exchange I got the feeling this man is not all well. The owner is rude but not in an amusing way, he gets personal and pretends it is just banter. I personally think he has phycological issues and shouldn't be allowed near the public. I have tried to process what is the real problem and have deduced that he is just simply a bit of a moron who has alpha male insecurities. He clearly has his favourites or 'friends' who are probably used to his banter but I don't think we will return. He spoilt a very nice day.

I have kept my boat at the marina for a couple of years and used the cafe a few times. However today my wife injured her wrist and we asked for 6 ice cubes to take the swelling down before we went to hospital. Now much of an ask you would think but we were refused quite rudely. Last time me or mine will visit. Marina is fantastic, cafe is beyond poor. Avoid

The cafe is run by Trevor and Alan, and are two of the nicest people you could wish to meet. Come here quite often, and love it, Sheila is hard working and lovely, we love the banter, atmosphere, and the food. Sorry we only found the cafe on our last day. Take a stroll from or past Penmarlam Camp site to the cafe away from the hustle and bustle of Fowey. A little oasis and sun trap. Serves a variety of wines and bottled beers plus a food menu. Hosts like to engage in banter possibly testing if you have a sense of humour. We found them very pleasant engaging and helpful.

Lovely place to visit at the bottom of Penmarlam campsite and boatyard. I wouldn't take too much notice of the bad reviews because, like the two guys that run the joint, the word "special" comes readily to mind. They explained to me how the venture evolved and it is fascinating and he should write a book on it. Looking forward to catching up with the two of them again for the craik, as they say in Ireland.

We had a thoroughly unpleasant albeit bizarre experience at this café. One of the two men running it seemed to take against us immediately, our crime being to ask where the toilet was. Not content with adopting a brusque and surly tone, he then berated our Chinese friends (visiting Cornwall for the first time) for drinking hot water from a thermos after we had ordered coffees and teas for the rest of the group, and for placing a handbag and a rucksack on a table. These people have no business working in hospitality and no idea how to treat customers politely and with respect. If there is a rule against one or two of a party drinking water from their thermos then he could have politely let us know instead of barking orders at us. If you have a masochistic streak and enjoy being verbally abused, by all means visit this place. If not, steer well clear.

I last reviewed this place in 2014 since then it has become a firm summer favorite. We have a property in Fowey and a rib so if the sun is out it is a short trip up the river to moor on the Penmarlam pontoon and then to The Quay Cafe for a cold beer or two in the sunshine and a toasted sandwich. As it is by the boat yard and slipway there are always things going on to watch. The owners are delightful also. A real gem

But will go to Fowey next time.

We were staying at the campsite at the top of the hill so used the cafe on all days we went out in our hire boat. Coffee in the morning and a cheeky beer and wine on the way back. It's a great place to stop for a snack if you're out on the water for the day although we didn't eat there other than a slice of cake or two! The staff like a bit of banter so you need to take comments not too seriously and join in. Would certainly recommend for a stop off if you are out and about on the estuary.

We are staying at Penmarlam campsite. There is a rather steep path outside the campsite that goes down to the boatyard. Every day we were here we took our puppy down the lane, gave her a walk through the field with a public footpath through it. After her run we continued down the lane to the Quay Cafe. As it was bank holiday weekend there were lots of people about so we sat in the cafe and boat and people watched. We sampled their tuna sandwiches, toasted sandwiches and omelette and chips. As it was very busy we had to wait awhile for our food but not a problem as plenty to watch. The bread for the sandwiches was delicious ,white and granary. None of your grotty sliced supermarket bread. Well worth the rather steep walk back up the hill. The two guys there were very friendly .

Kill me now. Sitting in this cafe( which used to be a lovely friendly place with lots of fun) is a very misserable and life sucking experience. Just found out about this cafe/restaurant. It is situated up river from Fowey town overlooking the docks, moored tugs and Mixtow creek. The food is good and varied with choices such as Fish Pie, Steak and Chips, Fish and Chips, steak Pie all of which are cooked on the premises. Best off all is the atmosphere, being quite small the diners chat to each other and the owners chip in with the conversation when they can. We used the Bodinnick Ferry to get there with a short walk across a field and went back to Fowey by the water taxi (great fun).

Good value for money in a fantastic location with a convivial atmosphere where nothing is too much trouble.
