It has been some years since my last visit and the Quarterdeck has had a significant extension which I have to say is fabulous. I was not disappointed. The new entrance to the Quarterdeck did cause a few problems negotiating the cobbled paving with a wheelchair wasn't that easy but possible (certainly above my pay grade) but, with my dear friends son and daughter in Law it was negotiated. Having said that the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Once in, there is a disabled toilet which comfortably accommodates both the wheelchair and helper (I say that because many aren't big enough). Movement around once inside is completely fine, we had a lovely table next to an open sliding window overlooking both the pool & garden and of course the beautiful sea vista. Then we ordered food: To start, one smoked salmon & crab cannelloni (no pasta involved just crab wrapped in smoked salmon), one french onion soup with croutons and 2 bread rolls, and one fishcake, all 3 of us thought fabulous. For main course courses: 2 of us had Lobster, one grilled one Thermador (requested), 1 moules frites, and 1 catch of the day (sole). Again, the cleaned plates and grins on everyone's faces showed how much it was enjoyed. Then one Eton mess (which I have been assured is how it should be done), one Dark chocolate Torte with raspberries & salted caramel ice cream - absolutely divine and one affogato. Yes, it was a bit of treat for a 91 year old lady who is wheelchair bound, (who alway lets me park up at hers when I go off sailing) accompanied by her Son and Daughter in Law. Criticisms : 1) the entrance path isn't very wheel chair friendly but manageable - and without being able to park virtually next to the door, as we did, it would have been very hard work getting a wheelchair down the steep slope from the car park (maybe that should be a disabled parking bay?) 2) I was a bit disappointed not to be given any bread with the drinks, but actually I am so grateful they didn't as I had room for 3 delicious courses (good marketing) I am just so naughty with freshly baked bread and then find I either don't have room for a delicious pudding or come away thinking I have eaten too much! I'm sure I'm not the only one?? I think my lesson to me is if you go somewhere special and really want to enjoy . . . kick the bread to start.

I enjoyed a beautiful roast Sunday lunch at The Nare yesterday. The whole experience was so enjoyable. The level of traditional service is incredible and one feels very cossetted. Not only is the service remarkable, but so is the food. I am a vegetarian and thoroughly enjoyed my vegetable Wellington but I must say that the beef being carved table side from the carving trolley looked very succulent and delicious. The dessert trolley was an absolute delight and a highlight for me. I would definitely recommend anyone living or staying locally to experience.

We have been coming down to this part of Cornwall for over twenty years and up to a couple of years ago had often liked to call in at The Nare for morning coffee. Last time they turned us away quoting COVID and a need to protect staff and residents (fair enough). However, this time (September 2022) we were also turned away mid morning (we had asked if we could have a coffee). The staff were friendly enough, but didn’t want non residents in spite of the signage outside suggesting otherwise. For future years I don’t think we will bother - not for coffee, nor for meals in the Quarterdeck Restaurant. Such a pity; for those in the area wanting something in the morning the Melinsey Mill is close to Veryan and has numerous birds and plants surrounding the mill pond.

My husband and I visited this hotel this afternoon for a cream tea. We had rung several days ago enquiring if they were open to non residents and were told they were, but we needed to book. We rang yesterday, and booked, specifying we wanted a cream tea and not an afternoon tea. We arrived at 4.30 and were shown to a lovely sunny table, on what was probably the residents terrace, only to be moved 5 minutes later to an empty non-residents area which was empty, cold and completely in the shade. When the waitress brought us menus, it became clear that the only option was a full afternoon tea. We explained that we only wanted a cream tea, as we had had lunch, but were told that wasn’t available, even though it was part of the afternoon tea menu. We said we had explicitly asked for a cream tea when we booked and that we had driven for 45 minutes to get there. We were met with complete inflexibility. It is clear this hotel is only interested in its residents, as other reviewers have noted. We have considered staying here in the future, but not after today. In my experience, one can tell a great deal about the integrity of a hotel by the way it treats non residents….

You have to brave the country lanes to reach this restaurant at the Nare Hotel but it is worth it. From the moment you enter the hotel the service is great although somewhat traditional. We sat outside and it was cool. Choose a table not on the edge of the terrace or you will feel the breeze. Blankets are provided. I can certainly recommend the Nare Crab Sandwiches with fries followed by a selection of ice cream. All served professionally and with style. After lunch, if you can, explore the gardens and Carne beach.

Currently only serving residents, the Quarterdeck is a delightful venue for a 4 course dinner. Start with a cocktail and then enjoy a great choice of meats, fish or vegetarian choices over 4 courses. Well prepared food and well served, this £55 set price menu offers pretty good value for the quality and choice. A good wine list with by the glass options too. All in a delightful venue. Quite an old fashioned place but that only adds to the charm.

My Special Birthday with family.nine adults three children My first longed for visit to the Nare was disappointing. No welcome from two service staff. No atmosphere. General ambience was cold and dark, sack cloth curtain divider made it even worse. Afternoon Tea was so miniscule they were like a child's portion however they were very fresh and pastries of a good bake. Chef had made an additional smalll Golden Wedding cake for my guest who were celebrating their anniversary, additional charge and I believe it was nice. But sadly I will not be rushing to return although my grandson thought itgood, no accounting for taste!

Although I have been critical of this restaurant in the past, largely based on the food and menu not matching the caliber of the establishment. Perhaps I have been listened to.On our recent visit the food was excellent, a lovely homemade soup followed by a generously sized piece of well cooked Turbot, always a special treat when offered as 'catch of the day'. Followed by the theatrical performance of Crepe Suzette prepared at the table.

We visited for afternoon tea on a windy Monday. We had already booked and had a table in the alcove with a great view over the gardens and out to sea. The service was unobtrusive and pleasant. The food was lovely, four different sandwich fillings each. It is so much nicer when someone else makes you a sandwich! Two lovely scones each with generous dishes of jams and clotted cream. Lastly there was an opera cake (very nice), a fruit tart (melt in the mouth), caramel profiterole, and my favourite a macaroon. I fully recommend and would go back!

Food quality, quantity and cooking excellent. Had to wait a little too long at each stage - ordering, for each course to arrive and for the bill. We know it can be better and can make allowances because of the fair pricing and our enjoyment of the food, view, atmosphere and friendliness of the staff as well as the fact that it was out of season.

A beautiful location, warm surroundings and great cup of tea and coffee. That's where it ended, the price charged for the cream tea is overpriced for the quality of the scones and cakes received, the scones would have to be the smallest I have ever have served to mi and the cakes were all dry and tasteless. Jams and cream saved these poor little scones. Staff need to also look at body language when dealing with customers and not appear to look down their noses at customers who can afford to eat anywhere. We won't return or recommend.

Lovely drive there through narrow lanes. Beautiful setting overlooking Carne beach. We had been out all day around the Roseland and they were very happy to let us freshen up and change in the restrooms. We had booked the afternoon tea a while ago to celebrate a 50th birthday in the family. The location overlooking the bay was beautiful, and the service regarding the food was flawless, getting all the allergies correct. The big issues was with the wasps, and whilst we were having tea outside on the quarterdeck, with lots of sweet treats, it was apparent that we would be attracting lots of wasps. We tried to soldier on, but in the end, we had to ask the staff to move us inside, which they did straight away. Great staff, great location, great food, bad wasp control.

The Nare hotel is a place we had often heard of but never visited. We decided this time to find it and have afternoon tea. It's not the easiest place to find, on the Nare peninsula on the south coast of Cornwall. Being disabled by arthritis I needed a parking place very adjacent to the entrance. We did book in advance and explained our needs. The staff went to considerable lengths to cater for my needs making the Quarterdeck very accessible, necessary because the whole place is on a steep hill which few mobility devices could tackle safely. The food was plentiful and in three tiers, a basic tier of freshly cut sandwiches including cucumber, a centre tier of scones with more jam (raspberry on our visit) and clotted .than two people could possibly consume, and a top tier with a variety of small cakes. This was served either indoors in the restaurant or in an elegant conservatory area. Alternatively one could be served on a terrace overlooking the sea. The whole experience was most pleasant and reasonably priced at £18 ok for the tea, £25 with a glass of prosecco or £27 if one's taste was for champagne.

Saturday evening dinner for 2, weather beautiful, first thing to note are the beautiful views across the bay. We sat in waiting area with a bottle of wine and were then showed to our table. Starters of salmon and crab, both very nice. Mains of steak which was perfectly cooked and melted in the mouth, my partner had the halibut which again was top drawer. No room for pudding. Service good, only thing preventing 5* was a lack of atmosphere at the restaurant, was a fairly quiet night and we appeared to be the only people there under pensionable age!

This was my third experience of eating in the Quarterdeck and twice I've been disappointed, but this time the food was really below expectations. We chose the three course set menu for £28. The smoked salmon starter was delicious, but the main course of roasted lamb was awful. The meat was very under cooked, really pink and fatty, served with a few small carrots, one floret of Cauliflower and three small potatoes, not quite the Sunday roast I was expecting! The desert was very tasty, but an extremely small portion and I don't have the largest of appetites. My parents had the fish, which was equally a very small portion. All in all very over priced and poor quality food and if it hadn't been for the company of family, I would have complained at the time.

After hearing great reviews of this hotel, we travelled an hour with great anticipation of Cornish afternoon tea in superb surroundings. How wrong we were! with fear of boring you, this is a brief summary. 1) shown to table in old fashioned tired surroundings - kept waiting 10 mins before even the menu came 2) another 10mins before order taken -we were the only people in restaurant so hardly rushed off their feet 3) pot of tea arrived whilst we waited for our 3 tiers of homemade sandwiches, scones, shortbread and cakes. 4)The jam for the scones came in 3 clumsy chipped shallow bowls with no spoons, a meagre portion of cream, again no spoon, 5 finger sandwiches -different flavours - freshly made and probably the best part.6) food took far too long to arrive, tea by that time cold and stewed. 7) waiter spotted stroking and petting one of the many dogs whilst serving food. Not Hygienic at all.8) at no time offered more tea or even hot water for the teapot 9) Maitre D only came to the table right at the end to ask if all was well - a bit late in my opinion. As we had not eaten the last 2 cakes as not to our liking, we had indeed praised the homemade macaroons -he said he would ask the chef to box some up for us to take away. We were thrilled at this gesture -imagine our surprise when he presented us with a small box - wait for it - with ONE inside, cut in half!! The worst most expensive afternoon tea ever!I am so glad we did not have the glass of Prosecco as well, that would have probably been served warm! The bill never arrived, so we left our correct money and walked out -

The food was decent but let down with the level of service. My wife order tea, which they forgot and we order a side of chips with our main meals which came out before anything else. It’s literally the polar opposite to the other restaurant at the Mare where they were ultra professional.

Firstly, I am local….. Secondly, I speak the truth… Thirdly, I am glad that the prices remain reasonable to the working class family man…… Although the decor might be a little bit tiring, the hospitality compensates…… On the last at least…. This place does amazing food…. Fantastic variety and the special board fluctuates…. I just don’t think that anybody that is down earth Can fully understand what it must be like to run a business. It’s like the same goes spread all your cards out and choose wisely. I have eaten all over the world up and down throughout the UK…. And I don’t remotely care what negativity comments I read on here about the coppice…. I salute every individual under the Employment of the establishment. Therefore, I totally recommend anyone to try this place. If you are too posh to wash and this place is not for you.. And if you do not suffer by piles Then clearly, you are the perfect backside …. And as Dell boy once said…. Bonjour …..

My elderly parents stayed overnight at this charming local inn. They were, from the start, treated with huge care and respect. Staff went above and beyond to cater for their needs which included swapping rooms to allow easier access, housing (and charging) a mobility scooter at some inconvenience and finally ensuring they left and returned safely from their social commitment. Their kindness was amazing. And the room itself was fresh, clean and well maintained with all the charm you would expect in this lovely building.

Went for a coffee and was told could only have take away as it was 15:40 on a Sunday, my wife and I are both disabled and I have an ostomy and asked to use the loo and was told I could only if I buy something, so it cost me 7 quid for two takeaway coffees just to use the loo....thanks national trust

We booked afternoon tea for family celebrations. Afternoon tea was presented beautifully and was delicious. Our waitress Pinka was friendly and looked after us. The special offer was a bonus too. Highly recommended!
