The Quarter Penny Cafe in The Vale of Glamorgan

This is our favourite cafe in the Vale of Glamorgan - I meet friends here, bring visitors and enjoy time with family. The cakes and desserts are to die for, and the lasagne is the best in South Wales. Lovely staff, good service and great atmosphere with an outside courtyard for hot days in the summer.

We very rarely visit Cowbridge therefore were unsure where to try for lunch. On recommendation from a local shop assistant we gave ‘The Penny Farthing’ a try and were very glad we did. The menu was extensive and reasonable and all the food we saw coming out looked beautiful. We opted for the light bites options and were very happy with our choices. Very friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere. We will definitely be returning!

Always a pleasure to go to the Penny Farthing. A lively and popular venue in Cowbridge. Has character indoor and outdoor seating. Freshly prepared food. Excellent service from the staff too. Always a good welcome.

Lovely, friendly place. Great Ambience. I had the Pavlova and it was the best I've ever tasted, it was absolutely Lush with Fresh Raspberries and cream. Will definitely be going back when next in Cowbridge.

Lucky find. Didn't research restaurants in Cowbridge in advance, so pot luck that a friend and I found this very friendly and welcoming restaurant that is perhaps an ex pub? Sat outside in back patio garden. Just had the spicy Mexican soup, followed by cake as dessert. All their desserts are cakes, or fruit pies. Think they may be bought in. The soup was particularly delicious. Will try to find the recipe online! They seem to serve food throughout the day, which as we were late for lunch was a godsend. Staff friendly and prices reasonable. Would happily go there again. Thanks to Oliver too for directions to EV charger which saved the day!

Having visited this restaurant many times over many years, I was so disappointed on my latest visit. The staff are pleasant and efficient but my lunch tasted as if it had been cooked hours before; cool and not fresh. Cowbridge doesn't have a lot of good restaurants and I have always enjoyed my visits to The Penny Farthing but will be reluctant to return.

What an absolutely great experience we had. It was a Saturday night and we were not aware of it's evening opening on a Friday & Saturday night (a must try). So glad we eat there, as the food was a gastronomic treat and the fish as fresh as a daisy. Service and welcome was second to none, making you feel completely relaxed. Some lovely touches as well (quite unique I would say) - free Squash and Milk for the Children. Being ultra critical the only thing I would change is adding a second Brie wedge to the starter. Brilliant from start to finish and would highly recommend this as a place to eat and a must try restaurant.

Stopped here for some food after attending a local gig. Food was brilliant, staff were great. The ambience and atmosphere was great. I highly recommend.

Arrived for lunch today, it was busy so we agreed to sit outside. Led to the garden, which was empty, and were told to sit anywhere we liked. Waited a long time for our order of cold sandwiches. Half way through eating our sandwiches we were asked to move to another table. We moved all our plates and drinks ourselves so other customers could use our table. Mentioned this when we paid. We were asked who served us but as no one wears name plates it was a ridiculous question We did get an apology but were still charged full price. Will be a long time before I return, if ever. Would be nice if management contacted me to discuss further.

Reviewed on coffee and a snack only. All good for us. Clean with polite staff who are helpful. Location is opposite the Bear Hotel more or less, on the main street. Well worth a visit!

Gorgeous Caffè you would never guess had such a lovely atmosphere. Food was delicious. Cakes are tp die for (my diet went out the window) Only flaw was I would have liked the option to have my sandwich toasted, but was still lovely. Staff are amazing a it feels like a big family. Couldn't recommend more.

A generous breakfast. Cereal, yougurt, fruit, juices, pastries, then a delicious cooked breakfast, with plenty of tea or coffee, milk etc. well cooked and presented. Sat in the window seat and watch the world go by in the high street. Very attentive staff without standing over you. Have also been here for lunch a few years ago. Go back for coffee and cake, and marvel at the raspberry pavlova !!!

Lovely atmosphere, staff were very friendly and accommodating. Pretty outside seating area. Good range of classic British and Western European food. Tasty, but I thought that the Eggs Royale needed a bit of greenery or something on the side. Only criticism is that the music was on a very short loop, so a bit irritating after a while! I would go there again though :)

Such amazing gluten free options and the most amazing waitress service - lovely, helpful and made our day. This has become our new favourite place to eat in Cowbridge, so grateful for such an amazing lunchtime experience!

A friend gave me a voucher for afternoon tea, so I took my elderly mum with me. We received an enthusiastic welcome and seated straight away. Ample supply of delicious sandwiches and cakes, but not too much. Very appealing arrangement on the cake stand. Tea was piping hot and was still warm at the end of our time munching. Breakfast at The Penny Farthing this morning - we were a large group and the staff were more than accommodating. Lots of choice, service was fast, breakfast was enjoyable and we loved the atmosphere of the venue.We have eaten several times at The Penny Farthing - breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake, inside and out in the lovely courtyard - there is something for everyone.

visited with my Husband for lunch after reading reviews on here. Additionally, the reviews on here mentioned there was lots of veggie options.we arrived & were seated quickly, even tho is was a busy Friday lunchtime.we ordered 2 veggie meals, 1 Roasted Butternut Squash Tagine, 1 Beyond Meat Plant Based Burger, a side order of chunky chips, a tonic water & a larger & the bill came to £34.15.i am aware that its been difficult for this industry during the lockdowns but i relied on these reviews to select somewhere for lunch.so in my opinion, the meal was ok. would i revisit? no. would I recommend? no. in my opinion there are better places in Cowbridge, it wasnt terrible but not up to a return visit

What an amazing afternoon tea. Fabulous cakes, sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted creamCakes were as fresh and tasty as can be, and to top it off, chocolate dipped strawberries. Great service and friendly staff.

The Penny Farthing Breakfast was good. They were happy to substitute the muffin for toast and the sausage and bacon seemed to be of good quality. Unfortunately, I didn't get the extra toast I ordered, but that was OK. Also, they were happy to accommodate us with a portion of fried eggs on toast, that isn't listed on the menu. All round, a good experience.

I met my four school friends for an afternoon tea catch up! We had a fabulous time!All the staff were attentive & couldn't do enough to make our afternoon enjoyable, especially the manager "Mo"!The cakes were amazing, all moist, fresh & yummy.Great value for money & the perfect place to catch up with old friends

We go most Sundays for breakfast , the manager and staff are always friendly and helpful, they try to always accommodate where you would like to sit.Breakfast served quickly and hot coffee always good.Have had lunch a few times too and desserts are delicious, definitely recommend.5*

Always go here for lunch when in Cowbridge. Food is excellent but disappointed that they have changed their menu and no longer serve jacket potatoes. These used to be delicious and wonder on the reason for this. No signs on the walls for directions to the Ladies and Gents toilets and found it amusing to watch men going into the ladies and ladies using the men’s .

Looked promising initially, but my breakfast came out missing an item. When I told the waitress there was no word of sorry, then she came out with the missing black pudding which I could tell just by looking wasn't cooked much. Cut it in half and was cold inside. Manager came back with another piece later when I'd virtually finished by breakfast, no word of sorry. Didn't eat it on its own! When I went to pay he tried to argue that it was not cold and then tried to educate me that black puddings are cooked already and should not be heated too much!! He even had the cheek to ask how was everything else! No sorry; no offer to reduce the price, but sarcastically said they make sure it's well fried for me next time!! Absolutely no idea of customer service and rude!

Amazing service. We were given a choice of tables as I wanted to sit in the lighter area of the restaurant.Desert was divine.General manager and staff happy and accommodating.

Brilliant service , a friendly greeting as soon as you walked in , track and trace available on arrival , seated promptly, great food and delicious cake - what more could you want !!!

Called in for lunch. Food was just average, the sweet potato chips were luke warm.Very shocked there was no test and trace being carried out.

Met a friend here yesterday. We ordered a pot of tea with a pot of hot water, no milk but a slice of lemon & a coffee, also 2 toasted teacskes.Coffee arrived ok, tea arrived with milk & the lemon slice was in the pot of tea. The pit of hot water was warm. The teacakes were ok, but only 1 small pack of butter - we asked for another.When I paid the bill, I had been charged 10p for lemon slice - which I found staggering, especially as I asked for lemon instead of milk.They need to tweak a few things ...

Having recently moved to Cowbridge we have been itching to get out to try the local eateries and got off to a flyer at the Penny Farthing! We were met with a warm welcome by Mo (Manager) who found a table right away for my myself, my wife and our rather large puppy. We had a delicious salmon and cream cheese sandwich, followed by exceptionally good carrot and cheesecakes. Mo and the other staff were very pleasant and our puppy enjoyed his sausage and water bowl courtesy of Mo.....looking forward to our next visit and trying some more dishes (and cake)! A really pleasant lunch and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Cowbridge, you won't be disappointed! JC

Having been called to Wales to work during Covid it was an absolute pleasure to have my breakfast here every day for a week. A warm welcome awaited every day. Top quality food and very friendly service. Highly recommend.

Three of us met up for the festive afternoon tea. Staff very welcoming. Good choice of sandwiches and cakes, all delicious. Restaurant felt very safe, good distance between tables and staff scrupulously wiped down tables and surfaces after each customer. Staff didn't rush us, even thought towards the end of our visit they were closing up. Highly recommend

I cannot recommend The Penny Farthing enough. After staying at The Bear Hotel opposite, we spent every morning at The Penny Farthing for breakfast, as well as weekends for a coffee and cake! Brilliant facility, lovely surroundings, great food and drink and the staff were amazing... couldn’t have been nicer! Extra credit to the manager who was amazing and couldn’t help enough every morning! No better way for those who work away or just want to pop in to be greeted by such brilliant staff and manager! They took the time to talk to you, know your order and generally bring a great vibe to the cafe! Very covid safe and in a lovely setting! Recommend highly! Richard

Had a lovely lunch today with my mum. The manager as always was polite and courteous as well as very friendly. Food was lovely , we had sandwiches, they were tasty and fresh. Atmosphere was cosy and festive . The manager always does his very best accommodate everyone , really enjoy our visits

Where do I start? As very regular customers of The Penny Farthing, we have always accommodated the idiosyncrasies of the manager (front of house), as we enjoy the surroundings and the menu provided for all members of our family. Today however, the manager asked us to move out of the way so that another family could enter. Under normal conditions we would have been quite happy to do so, but as the entrance way is small this would NOT have allowed for social distancing. This seemed to be of little concern to him, and when I pointed this out, he was less than pleased. After our lunch we ordered 2 desserts, and were subsequently informed that one was not available. Not a problem, we just had the one dessert. When paying the bill I was charged for two desserts, and pointed out we had in fact only had one. At which point the manger disagreed with me, and actually went to our table to check the plates/dishes that were left. Small inconveniences perhaps, but certainly not the level of service I would expect, and certainly not from a member of the management team.

We called up to reserve a table and were told by the manager that there were plenty then hung up on. When we arrived, the manager asked us to move up in the queue so he could get more people in but we declined, explaining that it wouldn’t leave enough room for social distancing between us and the customers in front of us (I’m also 6 months pregnant so don’t want to put myself at any further risk) to which he replied “it’s fine, you have masks on” (this is why the numbers in Wales are so bad...).The menu is great but the food is ok. The portions are small for the price and were lacking in flavour (the avocado on toast is one piece of sourdough sliced thinly and cut in half, topped with chunks of avocado that tasted of nothing but lemon juice).The other staff are very friendly and polite, it’s just a shame about the manager. It’s not the first time we’ve visited but our experience on this occasion was very disappointing. I don’t think we’ll bother again.

I’ve been going here since I was a child and in its 80s 90s heyday it was great. The lunch we had yesterday just highlighted how it is no longer great. My sandwich was two slices of dry thin processed brown bread with a single slice of thin processed ham and some grated cheese served with What tasted like Processed coleslaw. Old days would have been thick granary bread a slice of real ham and a slice of cheese. The staff are lovely tho all of them and coffee is great. We just won’t be going back because the food isn’t.

Had a lovely time this afternoon with my two grandchildren in the penny farthing. A superb reintroduction into hospitality after my incarceration due to the covid pandemic. The staff were fantastic and the manager especially was very charming and attentive. As a customer that has been coming to this restaurant for over 30 years, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any visitors. The menu is varied and enticing, and as a family of varying ages we all enjoyed our visit with equal measure. Looking forward to returning!

I went for afternoon tea with friends on Friday 25th September and we all enjoyed ourselves. We had a good selection of sandwiches and cakes and the staff were very attentive. I would definitely recommend this place.

Fantastic breakfast here - full English breakfast with OJ and coffee was £9.50 Great service too from attentive staff and their manager (an Italian / Spanish guy??) Recommended

To tell the truth, we stopped here because I needed to use the loo!However, that would be rude, so we stopped for a coffee each.As it was nearly lunchtime, we had sandwiches too.Egg and bacon was one, cheese and ham was the other, both on brown bread.OK, it's not the cheapest place, but this is Cowbridge. The sandwiches, served with a side salad and coleslaw, were great. Nicely filled.This is a very pleasant place, with excellent staff, and if I visit Cowbridge again, I'd definitely call in again.

THE best steak ever. I always ask for blue steak and in most restaurants they do it over done, but here I had the most perfectly cooked blue steak. Pudding was just as good. 10/10. Also atmosphere was really nice, service was excellent.

We had a fantastic visit to The Penny Farthing. We particularly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and sitting outside on a summers evening was perfect . Special mention has to go to Mohammed El Kilany and staff who made us feel extremely welcome. We will definitely be making another visit very soon.

This little restaurant has a lovely and cosy atmosphere with great staff. We have ordered the afternoon tea on a few different occasions, which is absolutely divine. Lovely choice of sandwiches, freshly made scones and melt in your mouth cakes! My husband and I have tried a few different venues across South Wales for afternoon tea but nothing compares to the quality you get here in The Penny Farthing. We shall definitely be returning customers!

Called here today for an Afternoon Tea, also good range on offer with the Gluten Free option. Very busy during the Eat Out Scheme, so best to book ahead. Very nice quaint location in the picturesque village of Cowbridge, car park close by on Church Street just off the high street.

I'm disabled following a stroke but not enough could be done. Even fetched me a chair with arms from a nearby hotel. Steak night was lovely food. Homemade chips wow

Hotel staff are lovely and friendly and welcomed us and our little dog . Rooms are basic but very clean and with amenities . Very good location for town centre and also new forest walks and surrounding areas

After the chaos of the Coronavirus I needed a supprise for my mum for mothers day the Team at Penny Farthing led by Moh and Scarlett did a fantastic spread before the lockdown. look forward to seeing you all again when this blows over.

A great place with wonderful service. The staff are superb. The lady we were welcomed by, scarlet I believe, was very friendly and welcoming. Food was lovely, especially the cake! Had a wonderful meal with my family. We’ve already made plans to come again! Would highly recommend.

Visited about 3 pm looking to eat - staff confused not sure of what food was available. No salads available as "salad bar was only out for a few hours". Eventually settled for a jacket potato with coronation chicken. Served with a side salad with not much flavor. Asked about the various deserts - ordered pavlova was brought paris brest - accepted the error (the offer was made to change and get pavlova instead) so glad as it was delicious.

We try to visit here when family travel down from Lancashire, as we always enjoy a lovely lunch which is different from other cafe/restaurants, but I was a little disappointed on our visit yesterday. I always have the chicken livers, mushrooms and bacon which is truly amazing and it has always been served with a small baguette (either whole meal or white) but yesterday the menu stated it was served with a slice of sourdough, which I didn’t mind but when it arrived it was a very badly cut slice of uncut bread, definitely not sourdough. The waitress said she would bring a spoon on her way back, which I never received. We will return when the family are next down but I will expect my order to be what the menu states.

Had a gift card for £50 to spend here and we had already used some of it so didn’t know how much was left. we decided to call in for afternoon lunch. Before ordering we asked if they could check the card for amount left and were told we would have to order food 1st then they would only know when we pay for our food after we’d eaten! We ordered the steak pie and chips. The pie was delicious the chips were disgusting cooked and warmed several times over so much so there was no potato left inside the chips. We sent them back and were told we have to wait 10 minutes for fresh as the cook was busy. We tried to pay with our gift card and were told that the machine wasn’t working and we would have to pay cash! After some discussion we were forced into paying with no apologies. We wouldn’t have chosen to eat in this place if it weren’t for the gift card Won’t be going there again!!

We dined at Penny Farthing a couple of weeks ago. It was exceptionally busy this Saturday evening and as stated on web page, we had previously booked. The food was excellent and the staff more than willing to help and assist. Would not visit dressed for winter, it was quite warm inside to say the least! Would highly recommend ..

After a 2am start from home to cardiff airport (dropping someone else off) we decided to stop in Cowbridge for breakfast, fortunately the restaurant opened earlier enough.. it appears that the majority of the restaurant/ coffee shops open at -10am! I opted for bacon and mushroom sandwich whilstMy husband had eggs Royale, both were lovely, good quality bacon (fantastic). Definitely going to return for afternoon tea as the cake selection was lovely ...far too much choice just to choose one! Lovely venue, nice coal effect effect place, on a very wet windy morning, this was needed. Staff were friendly.

Visited on 17th February for my birthday lunch.I ordered the quiche with house salad selection my husband ordered steak and ale pie with chips.Our lunch was brought so I go to the salad bar with my plate to find no salad has been put out.I asked a waitress who said she’d find out and was still standing there almost 10 mins later! By the time they put all the salad into the salad bar and I chose mine my husband had finished his meal! This is not the norm we eat here very often but on this day everyone seemed rushed and not in controlThe ambience didn’t feel right at all.We didn’t stay for coffee and cake

Visited with friends for dinner on a Saturday evening. When my meal was ready they noted it was the wrong order and would be put right but by the time it came the others had almost finished (after eating as slowly as possible).I was offered a complimentary desert but as time was going on had it to take away. Couldn't quite understand why they have paper over the light bulbs at the table!!

Our food was excellent and the staff were very helpful. It was let down by the Manager who told a couple who hadn't finished their food that he had customers who had just walked in that they could have their table. The couple at the table explained that they were deciding on their desert but the Manager just took their plates away and left them to leave. This all came down to the place being full and the Manager not explaining to people walking in that there was a waiting time due to all the tables being occupied. As a recently retired retail Manager I couldn't believe the total lack of customer service. We were considering booking a table for eight for my wife's birthday. Unfortunately the actions of the Manager have caused us to look elsewhere.

I get a take away coffee 2 or 3 times a week, it is consistently good!! All of the staff are friendly & smiling, they are happy putting my coffee in my thermos drinks pot (always heat it first!) Naomi always stops briefly to say hello & ask how I am, just love popping in there! Their small slices of cake are scrummy & love the shortbread biscuits that come with the coffee

Myself and a friend took a little trip into Cowbridge and came across this place to eat. We were welcomed by friendly staff and seated next to the cutest little wishing well. The whole atmosphere was brilliant and felt comfortable straight away. The food was outstanding, so delicious and so full of flavour I cannot wait to visit here again. Service was also excellent!!

I have been coming here since I was a little girl with my grandmother.

Last minutes decision. 6 of us hungry and rang on the off chance. Fabulous you were able to fit us in on Sunday for lunch. Service superb, food, we chose turkey roast and enjoyed very much, followed by the salted caramel cheesecake, oh my still dreaming about this, so tasty, not too sweet and left you wanting more. Thank you we had an excellent visit.

We popped in for lunch last week as we were in cowbridge for the day. We'd never previously been but heard many good things. The menu was varied and we were pleased to find plenty of options for my wife who is gluten free. Food was delicious! We will definitely consider coming back with our friends in the evening! Certainly worth the trip.

Friendly welcome and attractive entry. Not clear which was the table we had reserved. Scatty service. Three out of four served, one left waiting and then served in two parts and so much later that it prevented the whole party from taking dessert. Food ok but out of a pot of mostly freshly-fried chips (indeed the need to "open a new packet" was the cause of one of the delays) came one which was plainly straight out of that packet and had not seen the frier. Would hesitate before returning though other customers seemed to rate the place and it seems popular.

My family and I have been visiting The Penny Farthing aka Farthings for many many years particularly when I lived in the area as a teenager. I have extremely fond memories of this place, especially the famous moneybags!. Sadly, I haven't been here for sometime, but was lucky enough to get a table for 3 when visiting Cowbridge recently. Apart from some slight but tasteful and empathetic updating, the ambience has not changed at all. The food was served beautifully, lovely portions and not over priced. The little coves are so quaint and the fire is the 'icing on the cake'! I intend to try the evening meals one weekend. The staff were very professional, worked well together and were very helpful. This really is the gem of Cowbridge! I am so pleased it hasn't changed....I love it!

We popped in for a late Saturday lunch and were pleasantly surprised to find a they were still serving food. The staff were extremely polite and pleased to see us and the food was amazing. Definitely going back!

5 of us this time. Pre booked our table as it can get very busy. 2 Chicken sunday lunches (one gluten free) 2 nut roast sunday lunches and one chicken and leek pie with mash. Plenty of vegetables and gravy. Separate gravy and vegetables for me as gluten free. You have to finish off with the Toffee Pavlova, its a must!

Stopped for coffee and loo the disable toilet was spotless and the area was very clean

I’ve been here a few times and Mo and his team are exceptional. The service is great and the food is as well. I’m a vegetarian and I think they serve one of the best Sunday lunches I’ve had. Plus their deserts are to die for!!

Everytime I come to visit Cowbridge which is usually monthly I will always come here for lunch. The food and service is outstanding. I have never had one bad meal here, my favourite thing about this place is their cakes, please try their raspberry pavlova, it's the best desert you will try. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone and anyone.

Went for breakfast - Excellent service and super food in a lovely environment, had the cooked breakfast and it was all done to perfection.

I paid 8.50 for a large glass of wine if there was a full waitress service I probably wouldn't mind paying this price,the Sunday lunch is average for 11.95.

The Penny Farthing Wine Bar and Restaurant is a 'must do' when visiting Cowbridge. There are excellent pastries to go with morning coffee or afternoon tea and lunch is highly recommended. It is a little pricey but the food is well worth it. The only drawback is the fact that it is so popular you sometimes have to wait to be seated but, again, well worth it.

We had a fabulous meal and amazing service, the restaurant has now opened in the evening on Friday and Saturday night. We would definitely recommend a visit.

We are lucky enough to get a table for Sunday lunch and it was a window seat... the food was amazing just as we had thought it would have been..... generous slices of beautifully cooked beef and lots of fresh veg and of course the gravy well my mouth is just watering thinking about it ..... the staff were were exceptionally helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them..... we enjoyed so much we stayed a little longer and had a sweet each and a bottle of wine.... highly highly recommended

Called in for first time on Saturday morning. Received a friendly welcome and invited to find a table. Service was quick and efficient. The coffee was good and the cakes were of a very generous portion. In addition to the quality of the food and drink, there is also free WiFi.

I came in for somewhere to get a quick coffee, but truly enjoyed the atmosphere, beautiful interior and friendly staff during my stay. Will certainly come back again, and make this a regulary place to stop and refuel / catch up! Thank you for the excellent service, and glad to know about you!

Cosy little cafe with a great range of food. We went there for breakfast. Ended up staying till lunchtime! Service really was with a smile.

Visited a few days ago for lunch and a couple of drinks.

Poor quality food and highly overpriced (£7 for toasted ciabatta, no sides). I ordered the chicken, bacon & mozzarella ciabatta; the bacon was dry (tasted like it was leftover), the chicken was processed and cheap and there was a tiny amount of mozzarella making it all dry and inedible. I was offered an alternative meal or a refund as I complained. The floors were dirty (covered in food). However, the decor and coffee were both lovely.

I have been visiting The PF regularly every Sunday for the last year whilst my daughters have attended an activity nearby.
