Great selection of ales ,with a very reasonable menu with plenty of selection (or tho my husband always has fish and chips )being a Sunday even if it’s warm you can’t beat a roast that I haven’t had to cook roast beef cooked to perfection with plenty of veg not over cooked ! very good value for money and a bonus the landlords son runs the shop adjacent which is open all hours (when Brandon is about just ask at the bar ) where you can purchase anything from bleach fairy ,liquid to baked beans etc will definitely visit again looking forward to seeing the beautiful inglenook fire alight 😊

Attended the pub for a family lunch to be totally shocked when checking the bill to find out that their prices on the menu do NOT include VAT. I honestly cannot remember the last time when menu prices in a pub, cafe excluded VAT. So I doubled checked their on line menu to see there is absolutely no mention of VAT being added only a service charge

Dreary Sunday in late November, driving through Sussex lanes. Passing this lovely looking inn, so stopped for a pint. Wonderful smell of Sunday roast and gave it a try. Great decision made. Plates loaded with lovely cooked veg and meat. Cauliflower cheese to die for. The day ended there, Deserts, haven't got a clue, couldn't manage one, as roast meals were absolutely fantastic. If they are anything like the roasts then we missed out large. T U hospitality from bar staff was also wonderful and welcoming.

Came here for lunch earlier this week whilst working in the area. Got a great seat by the huge open fire which was a godsend in the cold weather. Cosy pub with lots of small parts to it, and clearly popular with groups of local workers. Decent traditional, simple menu, with plenty of choice of beer on tap. Food portions were very large, but also very tasty and of good quality. I only wanted a sandwich but would highly recommend the sausage and onion baguette. Very tasty and filled me up so much I didnt really need dinner. Not particularly expensive either. Nice atmosphere and friendly enough lady behind the bar, would come back here if in the area.

Visited this lovely pub for lunch with a friend. Good choice of food on the lunch menu, lovely lady serving behind the bar, very smiley & chatty. Huge portions of food, I chose the goulash, Mmm melt in the mouth beef, my friend had a the biggest chicken burger I have seen, delicious!! Proper country pub, handy farm shop in the car park, would definitely recommend a visit.

At one time in the recent past owned by a small pub chain who tried to turn it into gastro dining, this venue has now reverted to a pleasant somewhat old fashioned country local with good value food and a choice of real ales. Three or so different rooms with rustic tables and furniture plus pleasant outside garden. Fairly long menu of pub classics, a few were unavailable plus one or two specials. Portions were large and offered good value for this affluent area. Pleasant friendly lady serving behind bar and tables, on her own but not very busy, surprising for a Friday lunchtime. Small village shop in the car park.

Really enjoyed snuggling up with my book by the coal fire. One chap serving behind the bar who was very lovely but didn’t seem well staffed as he was on this own. I was quite concerned to see what looked like the chef wearing chef style trousers pulling the hoover around the communal areas and looking pretty grim…let’s hope he washed those hands before handling food! 🤣

We had ordered three roast meals ....2 for the chicken breast ......specifically because it stated chicken breast and neither one of us likes legs ...... So we had to return...we offered chicken to be put under the grill but declined that as nt roast chicken breast and asked for nut roast .....20 to three no food arrived .... I have just come out of hospital for major bowel surgery and have to eat at regular times as part of mt recovery ........ Very disappointed and upset that a meal that was offered as Sunday treat by my daughter turned into an absolute nightmare

We ate at the Punchbowl on spec last night and as we were close to the kitchen closing we did not have much time to look over the menu so I decided to just chose a dish I don't normally cook myself. I have to say the meat fell off the bone, the mash was lovely and the vegetable were just perfect with that bit of bite you expect at the beginning of the sittings early in the day and not at closing time. Would certainly recommend this for lovely food and a lovely old world style ambiance in the pub with burning log fires.

Really nice old building which had been extensively and pleasantly refurbished by the previous lessees who closed it abruptly a while ago. This was first visit under the new management.Three main areas downstairs, central bar with real fire and a few tables, bigger dining section and almost separate bar on the right used more by locals. Interesting old local photos and big portrait of Churchill dominating. We sat in the dining area and it was a bit chilly on cold frost January night, little if any heating. The pub does not seem to have a new website so we had no idea of menu to expect. It was not extensive and mainly pub classics but at good for Surrey prices, no specials board with more interesting dishes. Good portions of food though, well cooked, the ham of the ham, eggs and chips was good quality gammon ham. Standard desserts, choice of teas and coffees. Most pleasant chappy behind the bar who seemed to be doing everything, serving food etc. apart from the cooking. Good choice of lagers, some interesting European ones on tap, real ales including at least one local and very good choice of wines by the glass. I was offered the chance to have a sip before I decided. Not that busy on an early January evening, a few locals, background music coming from the "locals" bar. This could be a really great pub, the fact that the nearby Parrot at Forest Green is now in the Brunning & Price chain gives it the opportunity to attract those of us not keen on chain establishments but they need to raise their game (no pun intended this time) with the food offering to make it really busy and providing ambiance such that I would wish to make an early return.

A Christmas Shoot dinner in the upstairs function room. The pub has a small car park at the rear the main bar is on the right and dining to the left. This is no longer” a time well spent” pub. The choice of beer is good with HSB , Surrey hills and others available. The dining room looked festive and well laid out. We all went upstairs to dine, the room was large chairs comfortable and the table very festive. As it was a number of us we had previously advised them of our choices the gammon eggs and chips were served first and from the number I saw the meal was generous and everyone had two eggs which all seemed well cooked and runny yokes. Meals I saw were ribs which were huge, steaks that looked tasty and I had the pie which was excellent pastry and tasty carrots French beans, sprouts and mash with gravy. Although the food took a little time to be served mainly as they had to be carried up the narrow stairs. All the food was hot. The desserts I saw were sticky chocolate pudding, chocolate mousse fruit crumble all were well received.

The Punchbowl has long since been a favourite pub of mine and have visited on several occasions. Last June we had a wonderful family meal (10 of us) for my Mother in laws 70th birthday. It was with this in mind that my father in law decided that he would like to celebrate his 70th birthday there this past week. We were greeted on arrival and seated having booked in advance, a party of 8. Our drinks order was taken and over half an hour later our food order was taken. This meant that we had been seated over an hour before we received our plates. I had ordered the whitebait from the bar snacks menu and I have to say they were very good. Others commented on how nice their food was. After over half hour we received our main courses. Two of our party had ordered steak which were overcooked, the pie was a little dry around the edge. To be honest it would be wrong to say this was anything more than average pub grub, a far cry from our previous experiences in this beautiful location. Of course we complained about the steak being overcooked and had these replaced. Again this took half an hour to arrive which meant everybody had finished eating before they were brought to the table. It should not take 2 and a half hours to go through 2 courses. Had the wait not been so long we probably would have had desserts but instead headed home for birthday cake whilst we still had the will to live. On the positive side the manager was very apologetic and explained they were understaffed. It would not have been as disappointing experience if this had been explained beforehand so we knew what to expect. It is a shame that what was supposed to be a celebration became a bit of a damp squib. Will we return? Possibly to see if we did catch it on a bad day or if this is what is to be expected.

Tony Tobin the famous chef (remember Ready Steady Cook?) has taken over the food offer at the Time Well Spent chain and wow what a difference he has made. We've eaten there a number of times since the new menu and offers appeared and every time has been perfect. That perfection on the 'ordinary offer' was outdone last night with a Tony Tobin food demonstration that was sublime - we watched him prepare samples of the dishes we were going to eat and we were all drooling by the time he had finished - the tasting menu was amazing - a re-imagined scotch egg, followed by the best breast of duck and finally the most scrumptious chocolate mousse tart and orange flavoured ice cream.........they are planning on doing more of these evenings (some people were given vouchers as presents if you're stuck for ideas!) so get in early....

Last visited in early Spring, revisited late September evening for a catch up with former work colleague. I personally very much like the layout and country feel, two nice bars plus a restaurant and an extra dining/function area upstairs of which more anon. Good choice of beers and lagers but only an uninspiring choice of two white wines by the glass Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. On the website example menu there are smoked salmon, prawn starters and good choice of main dishes including lamb, duck, chicken, pork belly but the menu in the pub has just small choice of starters and mainly pub "classics" on the menu; I think there were just four specials on the board, one of which was already "off". Fairly standard desserts also so I would like to see a more inspired choice.

We should have realised when pulling into the car park on a Saturday night, it was virtually empty that this place is not popular. The party ordered, I enquired carefully of the rump steak, how was it cooked, was it tender etc and the replies encouraged me to order it. It was perfectly cooked and very tasty unfortunately it was also so tough that I was unable to eat it and after 3 mouthfuls and 3 piles of mangled meat discreetly removed to plate, a complaint was made. The young server was very helpful and told me to order another dish from the menu, there was no rib eye or sirloin so I opted for the fillet without trimmings. After a few minutes the young server returned to say that the manager and chef decided that if they replaced it with the fillet I would have to pay for it. By this time my party was over half way through their meals so I declined and went without.

So many things have changed at The Punchbowl recently that a new review is essential. The front hedge is neatly trimmed, the garden grass is cleanly cut and the new picnic tables look great. The walled garden area to the left now looks inviting too and we made a note to come back again when the small bar there is open for drinks. Cosy. From the rear car park the walk down the right hand side of the building is easy and convenient. On this lunchtime it was pleasantly busy and we were immediately warmly welcomed and looked after at the bar. I ordered one of the three local real ales and my partner was pleased with a white wine spritzer served in a tall glass. Good idea. Only wanting snacks, we were pleased with the choice of fillings for the ciabatta and jacket potato which came well presented with a good helping of tasty salad. Everything was such that we were made to feel that we wanted to return soon for a main meal. OK so we sat outside in glorious weather but the effort being made here is well worth a visit. Every good luck to the new management, they are certainly making it work.

The first thing when we asked for water we were told it was outside and to help ourselves. This is a nice idea but not when left in direct sunlight on a warm summers day. On this table was also all sauces and cutlery including mayo. I can only begin to imagine the health and hygiene risk of eating these. Escpecialy after prolonged exposure. We hadn't been here for nearly 2 years, because our experience then was so poor, we didn't want to go again. But some friends we hadn't seen for some time were meeting there, so we joined them. We had heard about several changes of ownership. Pity they haven't changed the staff or their attitude. Staff seemed inexperienced and were unable to remember a four item drinks order. Admittedly they were mostly young and the one mature person behind the bar seemed embarrassed by their approach. The sign outside says food is available until 7pm on Sundays - we were told to order by 2:30pm as the kitchen was closing. We didn't eat and the food coming out for other diners looked 'thrown together'.

My partners meal arrived with no bacon and the potatoes were hard. she only told me later as she didn't want to complain, and wait another hour or so to be re-cooked. when leaving the manager apologised for for the wait, I do understand things can go wrong, but the overall experience was disappointing compared with the last visit, I paid the full price..John B

The punchbowl being local to us we thought we would try out some lunch after a busy weekend. On arrival we were greeted nicely and seated were given time to choose our meals. A nice gentlemen (assumed he was landlord) explained that there had been some issues and there wld be a 16 minute delay on starters we were absolutely fine with this, and pleased to be informed. we were served our drinks and we just sat and chatted some 40 minutes later our starters were bought out to us well we paid £6:50 for pate and slightly warmed bread, no chutney on plate as advertised on menu, halfway through starter they realised and bought out chutney. Portion size of pate we cld have bought for a £1:00 in Tesco. Long delay waiting for main meal again we weren't particularly worried, when our meals arrived my hunters chicken was only warm to touch sadly we had to bring this to the waitress attention who apologised and said she wld deal with. My husband continued to eat his meal otherwise his wld have been cold. By the time I had my replacement bought back out he had finished his so ate on my own, no one came back and asked if replacement which had obviously been reheated was ok infact the staff that served us were not around to be seen . We decided after finishing that we wld just go to the bar and pay the bill. We paid full price no apology or free drink was offered for the service or meal. Many moon ago there was a basic "public bar" heaving with drinkers from the local villages and the more upmarket but not too posh lounge bar but now there are two connecting bars which have been nicely gentrified and refurbished providing a most pleasant atmosphere and with menus on all the tables this is very much a dining pub.We visited on a Friday lunchtime and it was fairly quiet, maybe around 12-15 people.. As we wanted to talk about business we opted for the old public bar now called thee Oak Bar dominated by an oil painting of Winston Churchill...not one he painted I mean but one showing his familiar countenance. The pub used to be a Hall & Woodhouse establishment but is now run (I think leased from the local Estate) by a small group of pubs, my colleague said they have others in Surrey with the same menu. This means that they now have real ales from other brewers and I noted the fairly local "Shere Drop" on offer. The menu had a range of dishes from burgers and pub classics and steaks to more interesting dishes and I had baked cod which was very good, my colleague lamb shank which he also announced to be very good. Fairly small choice of standard desserts and a full tea and coffee range.Apparently one staff member had called in sick so I think the head chef was doing most things, bar, taking orders, delivering food with just a sous chef I guess in the kitchen.. However he coped admirably, was very friendly and although we probably waited for our mains a little longer than usual we were given some nibbles to prevent hunger knawing our vitals. I am a particular fan of a specials board but there was none so I am just stopping a bit short of categorising as "excellent" for this and the smaller than usual choice of starters and desserts. Prices were in line with similar establishments but they do a Fillet Steak night, I think Wednesdays, when this is half price so that would seem a good day to visit. There is a large car park to the rear so parking absolutely no problem and quite a few tables in the front garden/forecourt for when Summer arrives,

Went back to The Punchbowl, as it is under new ownership, and had a very nice meal .The evening coincided with a Steak night and Charity quiz evening and the atmosphere , service and food was excellent. My party had steaks ( Filet and Rump ) all of which were cooked as requested and were delicious! There is also a good selection on the normal menu and the wine list is reasonably priced. We have already booked our table for next week.

Have been trying all the pubs in the area for weekend lunches and the Punchbowl is by some margin the best. Very friendly and professional service, a good selection of well kept ales and a great atmosphere. All four meals were excellent and the menu ranges from hearty pub grub to good restaurant dishes, all priced reasonably. Thanks - we will be back!

We decided to go to the Punchbowl for Sunday lunch, what a disaster, the service was well below par to the point where i had to go to the bar to get served. Then we found out there was only one meat for the Sunday roast. After this we were asked by two other staff members if we were eating and wanted to order.Whilst i like my beef rare this was something else. Once it had stopped mooing it was slimy and chewy and my wife couldn't eat it and the veg was awful. To offer this as a traditional Sunday roast was a joke. On complaining we were told it was a new chef, well as a chef new or not they must be able to cook. In their defense they didn't put one of the meals on the bill without being asked. The company who owns this pub is "a time well spent" what an unfortunate name as this was no where near what its name suggests. Are they punching above their weight. You need to up your game guys as you need your locals like us to use the place.

Unfortunately we chose to eat at this venue when we had family visiting us. We had visited The Punchbowl on numerous occasions when it was under previous management/ownership.We were aware that it had been taken over by new management and we have eaten at other venues in the same management satisfactorily. However at The Punchbowl we were served with dirty glasses, three choices of the lunchtime menu were unavailable, the food served was unappetising and cold. We would not return.

Really friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in. Lovely warm log fire to add to the atmosphere. Hanna and Dom were a breath of fresh air. We all had steak and couldn't fault it, our plates were empty at the end. We enjoyed our visit so much we booked to come again next week.

We have visited this lovely country pub only a few times in the past as it was becoming very 'samey' with little or no changes to the menu. However there has been a recent change of management and with this a wonderful new menu and attitude to the food on offer. We are a group of two couples who eat out most Friday nights in our local country pubs and enjoy good, mid range priced food and The Punchbowl was a real surprise when we visited a few days ago.A roaring open fire greeted us, along with friends who were also dining there. There were almost full of diners which is always a good sign and our drinks order was taken with a smile from a curious young man. There was no rush, service was steady and we felt very relaxed. The table was presented with homemade houmos with Nachos while we waited for our starters.I chose the Goats cheese brulee with green pesto, the others had Crayfish and Crab Bruchetta and the Duck, all were very generous portions and delicious. The mains were fantastic too with perfectly cooked Steaks for the men, my Venison and Steak in Merlot pie was homemade and full of flavour and the Turkey Christmas plate was wonderful. The deserts didn't disappoint either, with tempting treats as scrummy chocolate brownie, banana toffee waffle and mincemeat Pannacote. The house Pino Grigio was very a good choice and the ladies were given a nice shot of Lemmcello and the end of the meal, a very nice touch. Over all a really lovely pup, with nice easy service and lovely food with twists to known and loved dishes. The pub emptied from around 9.30 and we were the only guests after 10.00 which was a little disappointing as we would have happily sat and chatted all night, however we bid goodnight to and left .Strongly recommended and we will be back in the summer as the pub has a lovely garden and outside eating areas to wind away summers evenings.. perfect, please don't change anything.

There was a lovely fire in this pretty inn, but our table was between two doors, so quite draughty, and rather small, even though three of our party were children. The serving staff were lovely, friendly and efficient, and patient with the younger diners. Dishes arrived promptly. However, the food was disappointing. We've been very happy eating with this small chain, 'Time Well Spent', but were not impressed today. The children were happy with their burgers and scampi, the adults less so. The roast beef was not tender, and the smoked haddock risotto had a strange taste. Those who ordered waffles for dessert were delighted, but the lovers of ice cream were disappointed as there was no vanilla, only strawberry or chocolate. The bill was very reasonable, but we'd rather have paid a bit more for more inspiring food. One reviewer here said the toilets were portaloos in the garden. This must have been during the refurbishment, as the Ladies is lovely.

This pub has recently become part of the growing Time Well Spent group of pubs and restaurants in and around Surrey. We are big fans of the group's other pubs and wanted to try the new one. A lovely drive out past Dorking towards Horsham. We found ample car parking round the back of the pub itself. The pub inside has lovely charm and a beautiful fireplace. The manager met us and offered us a table either in the bar or upstairs in their more formal restaurant room, which has a large picture window and a few towards the Shere hills. We were the only two in the room but we attended to with care. The new Christmas menu had just come out and as well as their usual Sunday lunch offering there is a Christmas roast special two courses for £17.00. WE went for starter and main. I had the salt and pepper squid with chorizo - beautiful light crisp coating and tasty tomato onion and chorizo sauce Yum! My hubby chose the grilled goat's cheese with onion marmalade and asparagus. There was a glitch with their new tills and my hubby's starter came up a bit later than mine, as the kitchen hadn't received the order, The manager was very apologetic and hubby didn't have long to wait. The roast turkey main was delicious, thick slices of ,moist turkey beautifully cooked sprouts carrots and mangetout peas delicious gravy pigs in blankets and stuffing. The roasties weren't quite as crisp as they could have been but were still nice.We passed on dessert as we were rather full.As we paid our bill, the manager gave us a couple of miniature bottles of prosecco to apologise for the wait for my hubby's starter and he felt bad we were all on our own in the dining room (we had no problem with a quiet lunch to be honest), which was so sweet of him.It is these little touches, looking after the customer, friendly staff (we knew the waitress from the Red Lion at Betchworth) that keep bringing us back to Time Well Spent establishments

The service was good, new barman it was his second day, attentive and helpful.Lovely old pub that has not been spoilt! The food is another thing. We arrived and left past the extractor fan from the kitchen and were overwhelmed by being covered in the smell of old cooking oil!!My friends had a shared platter which they ate but were totally underwhelmed by it and thought it was very poor value.I had the whitebait which was so over cooked (in the old oil) that I opened one and it was virtually empty except for a layer of skin. Finally we decided to share a chocolate brownie which sounded divine and it was a dry piece of chocolate cake covered in chocolate chips! Icecream was good....told the barman when I went to pay, he said he would tell the manager but no one came to see us. So silly because we will not be going back.

Would def go back to drink and sit in front of the gorgeous fire but garden is limited (for summer) toilets portaloos at back (although not bad) and food distinctly average. Think the menu is too big, should be reduced and they should concentrate on fewer, better dishes. My husband had kangaroo, portion was very small - he ate again when we got home!

We were horrified to be sitting in the bar when the lady behind the bar confronted an elderly gentlemen about what his problem was with her. He asked her to go away and she refused and responded by calling him a pathetic old man, and further comments under her breath as she marched in and out of the bar. Whatever the issues are here they should not be conducted in front of other guests. Other staff are talking to him with no issues Really surprised at the staff training for this brand?! We will not coming back here as it does not represent all the good work this brand has displayed at their other locations.

We haven't visited the Punchbowl for years, but read some of the reviews and thought that we would try it. The staff were really nice and very welcoming. The food was good and all served on hot plates. I was pleased to find that I could order a jacket potato for my evening meal rather than chips and nothing was too much trouble.

Good menu, average food, poor service. A late dinner at 8.30, starters arrived followed a few minutes later by the cutlery. Starters tasty and good. Mains arrived again followed by cutlery, meat good, very slightly overdone. Chips leathery. One dessert and 3 coffees ordered. Coffee arrived, dessert didn't. 30 minutes later we cancelled dessert order and requested the bill. Several minutes passed and a handwritten amount was presented as the bill without any itemisation. Apparently the coffee had been free as an apology. Maybe not usual standard

We love this pub and the new landlords Time Well Spent are doing an excellent job of reviving it. The start of which was a free BBQ and drinks day which was amazing and Mark the landlord also kindly raised £400 for local causes - in this case the historic Flower Show. The food was fantastic and the drinks extremely welcome. The locals are extremely happy to have Mark and his team running this historic pub and we are looking forward to many happy times down there eating the excellent food and enjoying the ambience of a true local- a rare thing these days

What a stunning pub !!!!!It's beautiful inside with so much character , and although no back garden plenty of room out the front and to the side lovely area to sit in.First day of new ownershipso everyone had a free bbq and drink, normal food service from 7th August , so didn't get to try out the menu, but as it is a Time Well Spent pub I'm sure the food will be greatas it is in all the other ones in the group. It's a lovely spot to stop at if you are out for the day in the country and fancy a drink and chill out !!!

We sat in the old public bar with our two children under 10. There was plenty of room between the few tables and comfortable seating which meant the children did not attract attention. Not always the case in pubs. There were games and books to keep them busy. The staff were very friendly and knew exactly how to treat us all - whatever the age. This certainly added to the relaxed atmosphere. There was an extensive menu for all ages too. We had the snacks - ham&eggs, baked potato, baguette, pizza. All were superbly cooked and presented with salads and chips etc. We say - tops in the area for a casual lunch. The Punchbowl has definitely got a new lease of life.

We have been great fans of this very rural little pub, but more recently we have been disappointed with the general service and standard of food when visiting on some weekday evenings. The bar is split into two areas, mainly a restaurant bar and "public" bar. On several visits it has been difficult to get any service when the female member of staff prefers to chat to folk in the "public"bar. We have given it several goes and each time it is the same, so sadly we will have to take this lovely pub off out favourite list. Or perhaps the wonderful owner will take time to train his weekday staff.

The People the Grange support will serve you at your table gaining experience of dealing with customers and handling money. This is an excellent and weel worth suppoting. The tea is served in the Victoriam conservatory. The cost is £6.50 a head for a scone, jam and cream with unlimited tea of coffee. Most enjoyable. The only minor downside is the start time of 2 o'close which for us is far too early 3 o;clock for tea would suit us much better and this is the only point thatwill stop us returning

The worst experience having breakfast. Ordered a tea and came in takeaway cup sitting in.. with milk and teabag in together. Worst scrambled age I’ve ever seen they were like milk and upon asking the waitress why she replied the chef likes to use undercook them!! The salmon was covered in fat also which hadn’t been cut off when prepared! Awful experience would not recommend as had two bad experiences in this cafe with food.
