Great pub that lets you take dohs in. Food isn't bad at all and a good selection of beers. Love a Nicholsons pub!

Vegan pie meal is really good but they need more plant-based savoury and sweet items for the menu.

It's probably one of my favourite pubs in Brighton. I have not eaten there, but from what I've seen, the food looks nice.

I had their "famous pies" ... wild boar, this was more like a mass produced pie rather than worthy of fame. Sorry it did not impress. Just being honest.

An excellent visit, as usual. Friendly and efficient staff , good drinks and excellent food. For a central Brighton pub the prices make this pub a "must"

Very decent and reliable pub when we come to Brighton - on this occasion it was a joyful break from the pouring rain too. Like the table service and prices are very reasonable for - city centre spot. A very enjoyable visit.

My family and I went yesterday for drinks and lunch and I had the steak and ale pie with chips the others got fish and chips. The food was delicious! The menu was vast staff were friendly and attentive. I was served by Daniel who was polite, friendly and attentive towards our needs great customer service. Overall experience i would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good meal and pub experience.

Been my go to pub for the last two years. The staff are always warm and welcoming. The food and variety of drinks has always been great. If you want some place with all of the above, I strongly recommend The Pump House.

Must say, very disappointed, yes it's bank holiday weekend, so get prepared to be busy, only a pie meal, raw carrots, cold fries and a pie so hot from microwave un eatable, managed to get a refund but left hungry, would I recommend, no, 2 star at best

We sat in this pump which is located in a beautiful square. The decor is very beautiful. To order you have to go to the cashier and say what you want to pay and then they bring everything, of course if you wanted something you had to wait for an employee to see you. The food was amazing and delicious but expensive and the portions relatively small. We got a traditional pie with chicken and mushrooms, a traditional pie with veal with wine and herbs and a traditional sausage with mash and caramelized and fried onions, and a small salad which had something put on it and was not nice (vinegar). All meals came with mashed potatoes and gravy. We didn't drink anything. We paid 50.50 pounds almost 60€. We had the experience of eating in an English pump

Breakfast with friends. Really lovely food, the staff here are fantastic and will go out of their way to make sure all is good.

Full English was really nice, great price at £10 each, smokey chargrilled bacon perfect poached eggs crispy hashbrowns sausages where very tasty, personal opinion wish the mushroom was seasoned overall great Breakfast

Good location, nice pub indeed. I came in for a pint, not the biggest selection of beers, sadly. I didn't have any food, but I may have a meal if I come back. I arrived nearly mid day, not too much people. But when my pint was almost empty, the place was starting to fill up.

I had chicken and mushroom pie with creamy mash and carrot. Was excellent, lovely flaky pastry, lots of chunky chicken and mushrooms in a fab sauce. One word of advice, not good if on a diet at over 1100 calories, so if on weightwatchers diet save your points, it is worth it. Choice of real ale also very good. One happy customer.

Was advised a 40 minute delay to order food. I advised no worries and ordered drinks. Another local customer at my table advised I shouldn’t waste my time. Staff subsequently were very uncaring, had a care less attitude and just left us hanging while other customers were served. Simply the worst experience I have encountered in the United Kingdom. Contrary to other reviews, staff obviously could care less. Fortunately plenty of great options around this poor establishment.

I had lunch here as a celebration for my graduation. My whole family came down and all of us had the pies. The food was AMAZING. Very reasonable price paired with great service from the whole staff, more specifically Peter and Niko who made our stay. Would always recommend to anyone

An incredible pub with great staff and excellent food. The fish and chips is the best we've had in a very long time. Fresh, tasty and generous portions. Just a pity when the soccer came on and over took our conversation. That changed the atmosphere of this fine old pub.

A good pub as we like them. Beer, cocktails, chips, well-cooked British dishes, we loved it all! My darling took the Garden Platter all to himself. He loved it! I had the Salmon & dill fishcakes, it was so good, the potatoes were super well cooked!

Fantastic pies and a decent selection of beer

I was visiting Brighton for the day and wanted to find a friendly, welcoming place where I could have fish and chips and do a bit of work. The Pump House is delightful. A lovely old building and a very warm welcome, both from the bar staff and some of the regulars. The food was delicious and I could have sat there all afternoon looking of the bow windows. A lovely experience and I wish I lived closer.

Just pop in for a drink. Very friendly service, cool staff and I like the ambience. Even though not much choice of drinks but who care when you enjoy good time with friends.

While intending to enjoy rugby and have a drink at the pub on Saturday, 16/03, the experience was marred by the manager's frequent visits to a nearby table, where they engaged in conversation with a group of ladies and distributed complimentary drinks to each of them, resulting in increased noise levels. Food was unavailable during our visit understandably due to the hours we visited. However, it's worth noting that the staff member who served us was friendly.

I went to pub to have Sundays roast. What a mistake that was. Nut roast was soggy and undercooked. When I mentioned to the staff I got their poor "sorry" replay. What a disappointment! Avoid this pub for sunday meal.

Beautiful public house of old charm

Decent pub but I was surprised by the charges. Pint of Harveys Bitter and a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon was £16.45. Paid £8.91 for a comparable round elsewhere in Brighton today.

Visited this pub a few years ago, found it OK. Although during a recent visit we popped in for lunch, the bar staff (during the day) were helpful and friendly. Ordered drinks and food, which arrived promptly, although proved to be disappointing, undercooked fries, listless burgers (wont eat here again). Unfortunately there was a very loud group at an adjacent table, who had no consideration for other pub customers. Our lunch experience should have been a warning, but we returned with friends for drinks later in the evening, the bar staff were, unfortunately, less accommodating and frankly it seemed like the customers came second to stacking shelves, but the beer was good.

I made a booking for 20 ppl for a leaving do, i didnt know we would get our own room with its our bar and bar staff it was a really nice suprise. Lorna was wonderful, 10/10 for Lorna as well as everything else. The food was delicious everyone enjoyed. Thank you for having us

Wanted to take the time and write a review for The Pump House located in The Lanes, Brighton. Particularly the lovely staff who welcomed everyone into the inviting old feel Pub. The Pump House has an interior to match the outside, the history of the building is clear and obvious for any visitor to see and feel. The Pump House offer a set but varied food menu, there is not a particular allocated eating area as such, you can take a table, and order at the bar. I was welcomed and served by Lorna, who was welcoming, efficient and humerous. Lorna was mindful to ask about any known allergies before processing food orders. She advised on the offered dishes as well as offering ideas for alternate choices. Lorna is an obvious asset to the company, she managed cheerful chat and banter with customers, both visitors to Brighton as well as obvious regulars. She provided great customer service in between taking and running food orders to tables, bar service and clearing of tables. All done while making customers feel they came first. The pub held a good mix of ages, the atmosphere was light and friendly, somewhere I can certainly recommend. Lorna, thank you 5*, as well as a mention for Molly,Niko, Dom, Pete and Emma.

We live in Germany and the Pump House is our pub every time we come!! Nearly always eat fish and chips, English style. Excellent!! I'm Irish and my husband German and he too loves our food!! Roll on summer and we'll be back! Nuala Hof

Went with a group of friends for Sunday dinner and the food was fantastic

Bit of an odd one here. Food, drinks and service all good. Then disco time starts and shortly after we are required (and not in a particularly polite manner) to transfer all drinks to plastic glasses. Not even proper solid ones but the squeezable types. This before 10pm. This for everyone including those sat well away from the impromptu dancefloor. I realise this might be part of licence conditions but rather bizarre nevertheless. Also male toilets in a bit of a state. OTOH fish and chips are good !

We love the Pump House as they are always friendly and welcoming, and with great food. We booked a table in advance and were given the one with the best position in the window despite being only 2 people and table big enough for 4. The pies were amazing, as always.

So we went in and stood at the bar until a table became free. We ordered food. My Partner had Sea bass with mussels. I ordered the Turkey pie with stuffing and roasted veg. When the food arrived my partners was very nice but mine consisted of a pie, Mashed potato and one roasted carrot cut in half lengthways and gravy. No roasted vegetables plural and no stuffing. I certainly was disappointed and others were as well as they had to order a side of broccoli. Really for the price it should have had all veg there. I spoke to the barman he said it was edible. I agreed but at the end of the day they didn't even offer a refund or free drink. I don't think I will be going back.

This is always our first stop when we visit Brighton and we have been going there for 30+ years. We are always well looked after, most recently by Lorna & Adi, and we love the food so much, that we even had our Christmas lunch there this year. Be sure to pay it a visit if you are in the Lanes, you won't be disappointed!

Avoid the mulled wine Terrible And Luke warm Waste of money

Wow. I was here on a Saturday in early December and the place was packed. This pub is cosy, old, gorgeous, with great staff and food. We went in for a drink and to rest before continuing shopping but once we found a table I saw some of the other customer’s food and decided to stay for lunch. We didn’t regret it! Food was hearty, generous portions, and lovely. We had a great time and I’d love to return sometime.

Great DJ and great pub, had a most random fantastic night on our way to other places but never left!

Very welcoming and a popular pub with a good choice of gins and drinks on draught. We didn't stay for a meal as it was quite early but many tables had been reserved for dinner at 7.

Staff seemed irritated at best that I was there. Service was really bad, not a smile or any hospitality in sight. Was quite uncomfortable to eat there with that atmosphere, like everyone was having a bad day. Then the food was awful, I ordered one of their “award winning pies” and it was tough and dry, the mash and gravy had some kind of skin on it and the mash was hard in places. It seemed like it had been badly microwaved or sat under a heat lamp for too long but either way was really unpleasant. Cold on arrival. Paid £4 for extra brocolli and realised I was paying £1 per spear, which even these days felt ridiculous. Leaking window causing pools of water all over the floor just being ignored and left for hours. Allowed dogs but not very dog friendly. Feels like a tourist trap actual locals would never go to, I definitely won’t be going again!

Great atmosphere, friendly staff with a great selection of food and drink. Spent an evening with friends's. Background music that was being played was a fantastic mixture, something for everyone. A real effort has been made for the Christmas season highly we would highly recommend this pub for both food and drink. To top it off, the landlord brought us all a round of drinks appreciation from both parties.

Came here on a busy Saturday evening. It had a lovely busy atmosphere with a mix of ages. We both are their homemade pies, absolutely delicious. All tables cleared quickly and staff all pleasant and efficient. Would return.

Great place for me to stop by and have some lunch... classic bangers and mash! Decided to sit out at a table on the street and watch the world go by.. I highly recommend it in Brighton! It's well positioned with the shops around it. Atmosphere is one that is cosy, yet comfortable. Bar staff were friendly, even when busy.

Ordered dinner for delivery at 6.20pm and it arrived at 8.40pm. Chicken was inedible, fish was dry. All 3 meals were cold. If I could give no stars I would. DISGUSTING.

We had booked a table for Sunday lunch whilst visiting Brighton. Unfortunately although the normal menu was available, they weren't doing roast dinners yet so it was a bit disappointing. The menu did have a wide choice though so we all found something we wanted. My daughter asked for no avocado on her burger, but unfortunately this was ignored - she did say the burger was okay though. The rest of the food was good, but could have been a bit hotter. None of us were impressed when a staff member took my husband's empty plate whilst the rest of us were still eating and felt that was bad service. The same staff member was quite unfriendly and made us feel we were in the way. Also there was a dirty pair of socks left next to our table which was really not great. The pub itself is central, though, and maybe we were just visiting on an off day?

Came in for a Saturday evening get together with friends. We were greeted by lovely staff, as before during time here. Have been coming here for many years, but will note the great changes brought in by the Manager, Addi, and how the feel of the pub has been enhanced. Addi brought in a Saturday evening Du, since the first set, every Saturday is guaranteed to be a great time for all. The atmosphere is open and happy with a real age range coming in to enjoy the fun, music and friendly atmosphere. Addi has ensured his patrons, both regular as well as many new, are greeted by his lovely team and always provided with star service, however busy it gets. Would also like to name the brilliant staff too, Lorna, Molly, Niko, Danielle, Maya, Dom, Pete and Tandy. Thank you all.

Update based on the response from the pump house: Please note that I am not dissatisfied, my review of the pump house was not negative. My review was based on the fact I only had a drink and good conversation, and like I said, a nice atmosphere. Hopefully next time I visit, I can enjoy your meal and give a review based on that.
