The Pump House in Brighton and Hove

Our first pub for our first day in Brighton We chose it for the British style but above all for the terrace which was in the sun and its view of this charming little square. No table service for lunch You have to scan the QR code and order online… It's long, unclear and impersonal We didn't make it to the end We needed physical contact I went to order at the bar Friendly staff The fish and chips not too tasty, the breading not very crispy In short, rather average For me with my rabbit pie I didn't recognize the taste of rabbit We were not particularly disappointed And we wouldn't want to appear chauvinistic by putting forward false French beliefs about British cuisine. The main thing is to have had a good time

Great beer, a great location in the lanes, I used to drink there sometimes in the early 1980's

Quality wine, clean ladies room. I was there for an event upstairs. The room is newly decorated and cozy.

Kid friendly pub till 9pm. Lovely choice of meals. Oldy woldy pub, lots of character, lovely atmosphere. Nice little find, and great views onto a busy street.

Bought 7 drinks which all arrived in glasses, five minutes later was asked to put drinks in plastic pint cups despite it only being 9.30pm and we were sitting down inside. Bar person said it's ok to have glass until 10pm which was fine as we would be leaving then anyway. Then a very rude bouncer approached saying no change it now and would not leave until they had taken all glasses. There had also clearly been some sort of accident at the back of the pub as a really horrible smell which had been covered up with bleach which staff denied knowing anything about. Would not recommend.

We had originally booked in the ivy asia buy after waiting 20mins for our table we gave up and came here where we were treated with a lovely welcome and we had the best fish and chips which made our night. We will be back. Fab friendly staff and excellent food so thank you for making our evening.

El ambiente era genial y el personal amable lo único negativo era los Nachos para compartir con brisket plato increíblemente pequeño y si puedes encontrar la carne de res que tenía suerte y en £ 14 preferirías tener dos bolsas de patatas fritas. Aparte de eso un establecimiento muy acogedor y vibrante.

Old-fashioned pub/restaurant with heavy leather furniture. Burger was ok, but not with a “wow factor”.

We like the newly refurbished bar. The pub was quiet and service was attentive. Food was lovely, as usual.

Cozy atmosphere, bar staff were annoyed when you asked questions about the flavoured spirits - tainted the experience.

Very well looked after on a Family Boxing day Christmas lunch. Seated quickly, served food at the pace we wanted and drinks cam quickly. Adapted menu to cater for 1 gluten free. Brilliantly looked after by the team. Would have no hesitation in coming back

Came here on friday, and had some delicious food and good drinks, and the service from the people behind the bar was lovely and quick.

Great night and great service, booked a table and one of the staff offered us a better table! Food came out really quickly and was banging. Better than the average pub experience.

Drinks ordered never arrived, waited over 40 minutes and nothing came. Ordered the scotch egg for £7.. which was essentially a £1 scotch egg from coop put in the microwave - really disappointed.

If you order outside from the code on the table, they don't serve on time, we waited 30min while there was no one else.

We didn't eat at this pub but instead, myself and 2 friends went there around 10pm last Thursday evening for drinks after eating at a local restaurant. At 10.30pm, to our surprise, last orders were called. We decided to get another drink so we could continue to enjoy our evening, however, 10mins later one of the staff proceeded to put plastic cups on our table as well as the other tables where patriots were enjoying their drinks. I didn't realise that was the pub's way of basically telling everyone to pour your drink into the plastic cup and piss off!!! The employee said nothing whilst distributing the plastic cups nor did the bar staff serving the last orders! Had I known that, I wouldn't have bothered getting another drink! I am Brighton born and bred and used to frequent this pub for years but honestly I definitely would not bother going again - it's run by "kids" with no atmosphere. It just felt like we were being rushed to get out so they could close up and go! Maybe all pubs do this when business is slow? Loads of people came into the pub just after 10.30 but were all turned away because last orders had already been announced! Obviously something is not working right for this pub as there were only a handful of people there for a Thurs night before Xmas - maybe that is why they shut up shop so early? This used to be one of the most thriving and famous pubs in Brighton! I won't be returning.

Popped in for lunch while Christmas shopping with a friend, both had the fish and chips which we both agreed was delicious. We were served by Georgia who was lovely. Overall, a very enjoyable lunch.🤩

I suggest a little patience and an extra smile with customers who speak little English (the girl at the entrance). For the rest everything perfect.

Great pub that lets you take dogs in. Food isn't bad at all and a good selection of beers. Love a Nicholsons pub!

Vegan pie meal is really good but they need more plant-based savoury and sweet items for the menu.

It's probably one of my favourite pubs in Brighton. I have not eaten there, but from what I've seen, the food looks nice.

I had their "famous pies" ... wild boar, this was more like a mass produced pie rather than worthy of fame. Sorry it did not impress. Just being honest.

Hoy fuimos al pub a comer, una fiesta de cuatro. No estaba tan ocupado. Una gran fiesta detrás estaba detrás de nuestra mesa. El camarero no nos reconoció ni un poco, pasó muchas veces por nuestra mesa [para identificarlo, ¡tenía barba oscura y bigote!]. No hubo bienvenida alguna. Conocemos a Brighton muy bien y este tipo de cosas son raras. Salimos después de aproximadamente 10 minutos con disgusto.

Very decent and reliable pub when we come to Brighton - on this occasion it was a joyful break from the pouring rain too. Like the table service and prices are very reasonable for - city centre spot. A very enjoyable visit.

Been my go to pub for the last two years. The staff are always warm and welcoming. The food and variety of drinks has always been great. If you want some place with all of the above, I strongly recommend The Pump House.

My family and I went yesterday for drinks and lunch and I had the steak and ale pie with chips the others got fish and chips. The food was delicious! The menu was vast staff were friendly and attentive. I was served by Daniel who was polite, friendly and attentive towards our needs great customer service. Overall experience i would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good meal and pub experience.

Came here to end our evening after a meal elsewhere, was left with outstanding service from bar manager Niko and bar assistant Casey. Recommend this place highly!

Must say, very disappointed, yes it's bank holiday weekend, so get prepared to be busy, only a pie meal, raw carrots, cold fries and a pie so hot from microwave un eatable, managed to get a refund but left hungry, would I recommend, no, 2 star at best

We sat in this pump which is located in a beautiful square. The decor is very beautiful. To order you have to go to the cashier and say what you want to pay and then they bring everything, of course if you wanted something you had to wait for an employee to see you. The food was amazing and delicious but expensive and the portions relatively small. We got a traditional pie with chicken and mushrooms, a traditional pie with veal with wine and herbs and a traditional sausage with mash and caramelized and fried onions, and a small salad which had something put on it and was not nice (vinegar). All meals came with mashed potatoes and gravy. We didn't drink anything. We paid 50.50 pounds almost 60€. We had the experience of eating in an English pump

Good location, nice pub indeed. I came in for a pint, not the biggest selection of beers, sadly. I didn't have any food, but I may have a meal if I come back. I arrived nearly mid day, not too much people. But when my pint was almost empty, the place was starting to fill up.

I had chicken and mushroom pie with creamy mash and carrot. Was excellent, lovely flaky pastry, lots of chunky chicken and mushrooms in a fab sauce. One word of advice, not good if on a diet at over 1100 calories, so if on weightwatchers diet save your points, it is worth it. Choice of real ale also very good. One happy customer.

Was advised a 40 minute delay to order food. I advised no worries and ordered drinks. Another local customer at my table advised I shouldn’t waste my time. Staff subsequently were very uncaring, had a care less attitude and just left us hanging while other customers were served. Simply the worst experience I have encountered in the United Kingdom. Contrary to other reviews, staff obviously could care less. Fortunately plenty of great options around this poor establishment.

I had lunch here as a celebration for my graduation. My whole family came down and all of us had the pies. The food was AMAZING. Very reasonable price paired with great service from the whole staff, more specifically Peter and Niko who made our stay. Would always recommend to anyone

An incredible pub with great staff and excellent food. The fish and chips is the best we've had in a very long time. Fresh, tasty and generous portions. Just a pity when the soccer came on and over took our conversation. That changed the atmosphere of this fine old pub.

A good pub as we like them. Beer, cocktails, chips, well-cooked British dishes, we loved it all! My darling took the Garden Platter all to himself. He loved it! I had the Salmon & dill fishcakes, it was so good, the potatoes were super well cooked!

Fantastic pies and a decent selection of beer

I was visiting Brighton for the day and wanted to find a friendly, welcoming place where I could have fish and chips and do a bit of work. The Pump House is delightful. A lovely old building and a very warm welcome, both from the bar staff and some of the regulars. The food was delicious and I could have sat there all afternoon looking of the bow windows. A lovely experience and I wish I lived closer.

Just pop in for a drink. Very friendly service, cool staff and I like the ambience. Even though not much choice of drinks but who care when you enjoy good time with friends.

Nice pub shame every pint was light

While intending to enjoy rugby and have a drink at the pub on Saturday, 16/03, the experience was marred by the manager's frequent visits to a nearby table, where they engaged in conversation with a group of ladies and distributed complimentary drinks to each of them, resulting in increased noise levels. Food was unavailable during our visit understandably due to the hours we visited. However, it's worth noting that the staff member who served us was friendly.

I went to pub to have Sundays roast. What a mistake that was. Nut roast was soggy and undercooked. When I mentioned to the staff I got their poor "sorry" replay. What a disappointment! Avoid this pub for sunday meal.

Beautiful public house of old charm

Decent pub but I was surprised by the charges. Pint of Harveys Bitter and a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon was £16.45. Paid £8.91 for a comparable round elsewhere in Brighton today.
