Can't believe I've not been here sooner... from the outside you may not be drawn in but the stories of its greatness are filtering across the city. £3 a pint for some good hand pull ales. A fine selection of hot dogs, beautifully prepared and brimming with taste and all for a super value price. Nice surroundings, great music, chatty bar staff, live bluegrass on Monday evenings. What's not to like...?! You must try this place, it deserves to be busier that's all that let's it down.

My partner and I visited this pub for a quick drink before heading into the town centre. We did arrive early in the evening so it was very quiet as In not busy with just a few people inside. The bar lady was very welcoming. There was some Irish music playing so as to add to the ambience of the place. I got a pint of ale and my partner a rose wine. The prices were very reasonable . Would probably have been better if we had visited later in the evening in all honesty.

This is a lovely little pub if you want a few beers in a friendly genuine atmosphere. Eclectic decor, lots of framed photos and prints , old church pews for benches , excellent real ales , at £3 a pint , decent snack food and friendly staff. Worth looking out for especially of the pubs in St James street are packed .

Popped into the Walrus for a last minute Sunday Lunch and was not disappointed. The food is really tasty and well prepared - I opted for the chicken and my partner had the lamb. My only downside was the staff and atmosphere was a bit flat, It almost felt we were an inconvenience and when I asked if the table could be wiped down (it was messy from the previous diner) I got a big sigh.. Overall the food and value is great but felt disappointed by the staffs attitude.

Easy parking, newly refurbished and looks fab. As we were in a group of 12 the meal was pre-ordered. Once seated it took 30 minutes for the starter to arrive. I had a crab and prawn salad served with a virgin bloody Mary. It was lovely. The main course was more timely, the lamb shank was perfect. Cheesecake dessert was good, the people who had ordered champagne sorbet were asked to reorder as they hadn't been delivered. I guess they buy them in which is disapointing. Serving staff were great. Prosecco was on offer, two bottles for £14 which went down well!! Would definately go back with a smaller group.

Came in on crutches as suffering serious injury. To get to the toilet was quite a long staircase. Though said absolutely nothing about this and just drank my drink in the corner one local lightly joked when I came to the bar to the staff about my disability. Barman just spoke over me and made a remark that I did not have to come in! No provocation by me whatsoever. So if you are disabled in some way expect little respect or courtesy!

This pub is now run by two old friends who used to run a pub in Camden, London right next to my old office so it was a very pleasant surprise to run into Sean and Bronagh in Brighton! This is a proper local boozer, no tourists or stag nights here. Expect a warm welcome, friendly punters, decent drinks, good music and if you're lucky enough you will hear Bronagh's amazing voice singing to some very subtle karaoke.

Loud music which the barman wouldn't turn down even when asked; dirty glasses; filthy sawdust on the floor (I think this is meant to make the place look 'authentic' - it makes it look grubby).and rude staff. The barman claimed to have called last orders when we asked for a drink: I don't think he did but if he had we wouldn't have heard it over the noise. Not sure which client group the place is aimed at, as far as I could tell it's run for the enjoyment and convenience of the staff alone. I live locally but won't be going back.

We first fell into this pub by accident to escape the rain but were impressed enough to reserve an area for 15 people the next week for a leaving do. The manager Glenn couldn't have been more friendly and helpful throughout the night. It was the first visit there for a lot of our group but we all loved it and had a great night. Good atmosphere, good music, but still able to chat on a Friday night, drinks £3! We will definitely be going back when I'm in the area.

Tried this as it sells real ale and has a smoking area. The beer was ok if a little flat and the smoking area is nothing more than an 8ft by 8ft ex-barrel storage area which is quite shaded by a makeshift roof. Can't imagine getting more than 7 or 8 people in this on a Saturday night. They have live music a couple of nights a week (Jazz/blues etc). It's pretty basic (sawdust on the floor, dodgy toilets) and even the barman described the locals as "colourful". If you want a truly traditional "old man's" pub this is fine but definitely not for the trendy crowd

This is a wonderful new pub i found in kemp town, brighton. It's decorated in the style of an old irish american bar, lots of old pictures slung up on the walls, old fashioned barrels outside and on walls, and also a large canoe nailed to the wall, but probably the biggest and nicest surprise on walking into the building is all the sawdust and monkey nut shells strewn all over the floor, spit and sawdust style. At the rear of the building you will also find a quaint outside patio. Despite being small, it has a beautiful mosaic styled painting on the back wall and chandelier providing light and heat, all of which makes it very easy to spend hours out there (talking from experience). The staff behind the bar are very accommodating and friendly. They model their waistcoats with pride, giving the visage that it's their uniform, when it seems quite clear that they just enjoy wearing them. Regardless they are a huge benefit to the pub and help produce a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Should you find yourself hungry, the chaps behind the bar will prepare you a sandwich to die for, I don't say this lightly but it was probably one the best sandwiches iv'e ever had. Should you take my advice, it was called 'The Noble Pig'.They can also brag of two live music nights a week. I am yet to attend one of these, but if they live up to my first impression of the pub, you are almost certain to read another review on here regarding the said performance. All in all i would highly recommend this establishment, it is another beautifully hidden gem Brighton has to offer and i shall be returning!

This is much more of a pub than a place to eat so I am reviewing it as such. You can get a fine cheese or meat platter with some rather fine looking artisan bread. There is usually a proper pork pie on offer and other bits and bobs. Pickled onions in a huge jar, bar snacks, tankards of monkey nuts on the bar.Great staff and atmosphere are the main requirements for a truly good pub and this place has both in shovel-loads. From the drifts of sawdust covering the floor, the truly eclectic selections of pictures, artifacts, posters and other objects, and some really interesting music, and of course a couple of the usual lagers (but a few barrels of interesting real ales and a cider with a bit of poke), it all hangs together in a very Brighton way. And all pints are £3 which is not a Brighton-wide luxury. I recently paid nearly £5 for a pint in Hove.Keep an eye out for live music nights. We are not normally night people but when we did venture up with our Trades Union friends from the PCS during their conference last month, it was one of those 'I will always remember this' moments and all for the right reasons. The atmosphere on these nights really takes off and goes places.I like to recommend good venues for our guesthouse visitors. This is definitely one of them. As I said at the start, if you want a full meal, there are a dozen choices within 3 or 4 walk from here.

J.W Lennon's is a great pub. Very cozy atmosphere and has a lot of features that you won't find in any other pub, and that's saying something when you consider all the wild and wonderful things you can find in Brighton. The first thing you'll notice when you walk in here is the sawdust that covers the floor - a bit odd, but it really suits the feel of this Irish-American themed ale house. All of the drinks cost £3 and they have a good selection of ales, a dry cider, two lagers and Guinness draught as well as wines and all the typical spirits. As far as food goes, they do a cold meats board and a cheese board that are both good value and a small selection of bar snacks included some amazing spicy pork scratchings that I think are the same ones you get from Brighton Sausage Co. (also a great establishment that is worth checking out). There is some outdoor seating, essentially just a small smoking area out the back so probably doesn't get too much sun but it is heated in the evenings and looks nice nonetheless. Although I have not managed to make it down on any of these nights, they have live music twice a week that fits their Irish-American theme - folk, bluegrass, Southern rock and country. Apparently there's plenty of banjo, knees-up and grab-a-pardner dancing round the pub on these nights. The music the rest of the time mostly consists of those styles aforementioned as well as modern rock music. Most interestingly of all though are the playlists of folk and bluegrass cover songs, where bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Offspring and Linkin Park have all been given the dixie treatment.Considering how much of a dive this place used to be (it was previously The Leconfield for anybody familiar with the area), this is a really welcoming and comfortable pub with young, friendly staff. Definitely worth making the ten minute walk out of central Brighton for, or as a nice break from the busy nearby bars of St. James Street.

We'd popped into the Post & Telegraph around lunchtime just to have a coffee and saw a couple of diners eating steaks. They confirmed they were excellent so we decided we'd come back in the evening to eat there, which we did as it was Steak Club (Tuesday) night. Yes, the steaks were really good, the best we've eaten for a long time and I would definitely come back here on a Tuesday! Although the pub gets quite busy, we easily found a table and I was served quickly at the bar.
