No trip to Exmouth would be complete without a visit to The Proper Fish & Co. Excellent food, friendly staff.

Easily the best fish and chips in exmouth!

I do use this business from time to time, but on this occasion I parked outside to visit the chemist and insurance advisor.

My plaice was delicious as was my husbands haddock. The batter was one of the best I've had, really crispy. We dined in the place. Nicely served by pleasant staff. Will certainly use it again when we're in the area

Best fish and chips that I had while on my vacation in the UK. Very fresh and sizeable portions. Reasonably priced and wonderful service too. Highly recommend.

There used to to be some skill to cooking fish and chips. Something beyond the short order cook mentality that prevails today. People knew which chippy was any good and which was not, and they patronised accordingly. I can only say that in former times, this establishment would have long ceased trading.

Possibly the worst piece of fish I've ever had, watery, grey, mush (literally mush). Inedible. Chips were excellent though. But £12.25 for nice chips in inexcusable.

Absolutely amazed to find a coeliac friendly fish & chip shop that's not in London! The portions were huge, the fish was fresh and the staff were very attentive with my family's dietary requirements. We were thrilled with this fish & chips shop that we visited twice on our holiday! If we ever visit Exmouth again we will be back!

Very polite and helpful staff, excellent food

This is our GO-TO fish'n chips takeaway. We have to travel over 50 miles each way to enjoy the food here, so can only visit Proper Fish and Chips about 4 or 5 times a year. But the journies are always worth it Yesterday lunchtime we had 2 x Gluten Free Haddocks and Chips. I also asked if it was possible for the chips to be made extra crispy. 10 mins later we had our, cooked to order, fish and chips ready and we took it to the beach area so we could sit down and enjoy our lunch. The portion of fish was large. The batter nice and crispy and not in the least bit oily. The chips had been made extra crispy for us. Lunch was delicious Absolutely the best GF fish and chips in the South west of England Two things to note 1. make sure you get the FREE home made tartar sauce - delish! 2. If a 'senior' then visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday lunchtime when the chips are free, you just pay for the fish. 5 Stars all round for Proper Fish 'n Chips

Excellent fish, chips, scampi and above all, customer service. The staff went beyond helpful to help pacify our slightly fussy child! Also accommodated all 5 of us inside. The food was fab - worthy of best fish in town!

We changed from The Proper Fish Co to Krispies for delivery a couple of years ago. We went back on this occasion because we were too late to organise a Krispies delivery. Unfortunately, we received very dry cod in batter. The chips were great, but the fish was extremely disappointing and tasted unfresh and overcooked.

My dad owned fish and chips shops so I know my beans. Great bit of haddock, nice chips and a good portion. I ate on and had a wooden tray with wooden knife and fork. Savaloy was quite tasteless and I think was heated in water which removes the flavour of a savaloy 😞. The lads working there were extremely polite and a credit to the shop. This is no silver service dinner. If you keep this in mind you won't go far wrong.

We've been having Krispies for a long while because they do a small cod, preferred by my better half and delivered for £2.00. Had a Proper Job Cod and chips because we left it too late to get a Krispies delivery tonight, and the chips were excellent, but sorry to report the fish was dry and less than tasty. As an update, we've had Krispies this week 08/08/24, and it's been perfect. Why did we receive dry cod from The Proper F&C???

Came for lunch after visiting A la Ronde and it was fantastic. Wonderful staff, helpful and friendly, quick service (even refilled my water bottle), exceptional portion of freshly cooked haddock. Small store front seating area as well as inside the shop, neat and tidy.

My family and I, who don’t eat meat, thought we’d give this place a try. Big mistake. I asked to swap the meat sausage in a kids’ meal for a veggie sausage. Initially, they said, “Sure, no problem!” Then, moments later, they changed their tune to “Actually, no, we can’t do that.” Seriously? When I pointed out how most decent restaurants have no issue with such substitutions, they grudgingly agreed but insisted I pay an extra 50p (and the meal already cost £5.25) of course, I paid because, what choice did I have? The kicker? The veggie sausage was awful. The regular sausage costs £1.50, the veggie one costs £1.95—a 45p difference. Yet, they charged me an extra 50p. Brilliant math skills, right? So, I was essentially ripped off for 50p more for a single, half-sized sausage. Fantastic. Even in London, where they practically charge you to breathe, they don’t screw you over like this. So, thanks for the dreadful service and overpriced, lousy veggie sausage!

We were on holiday and I had googled where had the best fish and chips n Exmouth and this place really does have the best proper fish n chips! The staff were also very friendly and very well organised! A tasty meal to end our holiday with 😋

The most disgusting meal. The gf chips were soggy. The gf batter on the cod was brittle and the fish itself tasted rubbery. Don't waste your money eating here.

Just been in this evening at 9.50pm, obviously they close at 10pm but the chips were disgusting. Soggy and horrible. You should serve the same quality at 9.50pm as you do at 6.50pm

So as it says THE PROPER FISH AND CHIPS, the staff was amazing, helpful and friendly. At this point if the food is as great as the staff everything would be perfect “skip to the food” So the food was absolutely amazing the fish was freshly cooked. Batter was crisp and beautiful not oily, the scampi was also freshly cooked we opted for the gourmet scampi, and was delicious. For my children I got 2 kids nuggets and chips came with pure orange juice, they absolutely devoured it. My wife had a chicken burger with bacon, cheese and lettuce, all the food was presented like a top notch chippy. The gravy, mushy peas and curry was amazing. My wife loved the homemade tartar sauce. Also accept blue light discount so for a 10% discount they also support the local RNLI emergency response team. All in all 150% happy would definitely recommend

Definitely the best fish and chips in Exmouth and for a long way outside too. Chips are perfect every time. Never under / over done, never left hanging around. Fish is great, not slimy or greasy and batter is really nice. Pies are not your typical pies, they have loads of meat and the special pie keeps it interesting! Really happy catering for coeliacs and can provide a fair choice. Also good for kids with kids meals available. It's usually worth doing a click and collect which is pretty efficient. They are popular so be prepared to wait or even be disappointed if you don't book ahead at busy times.

Been using for about 5 years had a few bad meals but mostly okay, today was the worst, the chip are so dry and mainly bits of chips all different colours nearly all looked like they had been cooked or reheated a few times, the battered sausage was over cooked and hard even the dog wouldn't eat it, I won't be using them again a waste of £23.00.

Unfortunately we didn't receive 2 pots of beans that were included in the kids meal and the 1 pot we did receive had 1 spoonful in it.

Best fish and chips I've ever had 10/10 for everything would definitely recommend.

The normal place we use whilst on holiday was closed on Sunday so found the Proper Fish and chips shop and glad we did good size portions and perfectly cooked Fish with crispy oil free batter and a chicken burger cooked perfectly and not overcooked, the chips were Proper chip shop chips. We will return when we come back later this year.

The best gluten free fish and chips in Exmouth! And ever! They even have cider vinegar which still gives you the tasty chip-shop chips. Great staff and always fresh.

Tried this place for the first time, we are local to exmouth. Didnt like the fish or chips-, greasy fat on fish, no flavour. Chips nearly edible..no flavour, felt like they had been cooked ages ago, soggy and didnt finish the portion cos of the unpleasant taste. One good point, the bag was quite colourful!

Nice little place but Portion size of the large chips and fish need looking at for £11 the same size as the more popular medium offering down the road. Maybe get it right next time. Update... Portion sizes still not up to scratch. £3.50 for large chips. Not large, definitely medium, and as for those white boxes they now come in? Make the food smell. Cardboard or paper next time 🙄

Love this place, definitely the best fish and chips in Exmouth. Great menu, locally sourced fish and spuds and they do their best to be eco friendly. (No plastic etc.) the chips are much less greasy than other places too

Great fish and chips, but the additional bits were what made it 5 star. The fish was good for the most part (flavoursome and tender) but with a large fish by the time you got to the end the underneath batter was all soggy and oily. However the chips were good, and the mixed seafood platter was spectacular! I'd go back just for that platter. The salt and pepper squid was terrific.

The large chip portion wasn’t really large and of the 5 pieces of fish I ordered not one came with tartare sauce as per the menu. Quite disappointing for what I paid for such a large order. However the food was tasty at least.

GF food always available, it is tasty and always cooked well, and the staff are friendly. What more do you need!

Fantastic fish and chips! I'm not a huge fan of it usually as some are usually super greasy and with hardly any fish with too much battered. It's fresh! I have to say it's banging fish and chips! The whole family enjoyed 👌🙌 We ate everything, didn't even managed to take any pics 😆

Very disappointing. It's expensive and the chips were luke-warm, no need to be charging those prices, you can still make a profit.

After spending many years holidaying in Devon we have at last found the perfect fish and chip shop. Our family had two takeaway meals last week comprising of, Cod, Cod roe, Chicken breast, Sausage, Onion rings and chips and both times everything was cooked to perfection, white fish, crispy batter, succulent chicken, soft roe and proper chips. Great friendly staff and great value for money. Thank you The Proper Fish and Chip Co.

Have been having fish and chips from here for several years, however the last few times the standard has dropped. Last week we had fish, chips and mushy peas and the fish was of a very poor standard. The actual fish was grey and thin, and was very dry. The batter was extremely hard and almost orange in colour. It was almost brittle on the outside but still uncooked on the inside! It was actually inedible. The chips were OK, not great.

Some of the best fish 'n chips we have ever had. Even better they were gluten free!!! Lrage sized fish, wondeful GF batter, really tasty and 'thick' chips. Homemade Tartar sauce. Ab-so-lute-ly brilliant and at great prices. Staff so friendly too. We travel from North Devon down to Exmouth twice a year and we always stop off here for our Gluten Free fish and chips.

Tasty Fish n chips. Even better as they offered gluetin free batter. Cooked to order. By a main road so outside eating a bit noisy. Not really anywhere to takeaway too. Unless obviously taking home. Not near the beach.

Probably the best chippy I've been to. The food was gorgeous, the fish was perfectly cooked (and massive!!). The service was outstanding. We arrived as a party of 12 and the person serving us didn't even flinch!! He took everyone's order and served us at the tables. One of our party is gluten and dairy intolerant and she was easily catered for. I would highly recommend a visit to this place if you're in the area.

Best fish and chip Ive been too I don't like comparing but when it comes to customer service and the quality of food easily go for proper fish than others In Exmouth. As a vegetarian I always go for the veggie burger toasted bun and full of flavour this is the best veggie burger I've had in a long time. Family always have classic fish and chips it's never too greasy. Always recommend going here if you want the best fish and chips 🙂

We live localy, and use this place regularly every Friday for the excelent quality, service, and value; So many places over-cook resulting in very dry fish; these guys have got it spot on with moist, flakey cod every time. Having tried every chippy in Exmouth over the last few years, this is absolutely the best in the area by a mile. Highly recommended.

We ordered, cod and chips and chips on there own. When I opened the cod and chips I was dunfounded to see the cod. It was about 5inches long and I'd paid over £7 for the cod. It was a total disgrace. Im originally from the North of England and ive never been given anything that small. Because Exmouth is a tourist town these companies think they can get away with it. Well you won't be getting our custom again, or our family and friends, and as many people I can tell.

Another Fantastic Find. I can see why they have won awards. We called in to see if they did Gluten Free Food which they did. Because one of our Friends was Celiac. They told us that they cook the food totally separate from the other foods. We had fish and chips which was accompanied by individual Tarre Tarre Sauce with one of their burgers. Being given wooden type knives and forks plus serviettes We enjoyed them all very much. The Two chaps Serving were very helpful and friendly. We now know where to go for next time.👍👍😁😁.

The best customer service I have in in a very long time, better than a lot of restaurants I have been to. Staff are friendly, cheerful and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in, the environment is great and the food was lovely, served to us at the table on a nice tray. Thankyou so much to the staff, you are outstanding.

If you are in exmouth take a 5 min drive off the seafront and have an amazing fish and chips. Crispy batter and the fish just fell apart. Was excellent. They also provide homemade tartare sauce. We had a side of curry sauce which was the best curry sauce we have had with fish and chips. Top quality. My daughter ordered a cheese burger which isn't your standard burger. The beef patty was top quality and my daughter loved it. We actually went back to thank the two fellas who were working there as it was so good. When we are back in exmouth we are definitely going back!

Absolutely love this place, had the cod and chips with the homemade tartare sauce, my daughter had the haddock. The portion sizes were excellent and the quality of the food was some of the best I’ve had.. It’s great to see a small independent Chippy thriving.

This place is hit n miss we been few times had lovely food but this week went and when we got to sea front looks like a child portion and for £22 for 2 fish n chips coukdnt be bothered to go all way back so went back today to have a word and was met with what do you want us to do as if I was lying and was offered a free curry sauce il go back to krispies down road as customer service is awful

My mum and I went here when we were starving. The staff were really nice and our food was quick to make. Good old fashioned chips. However, the burger was very hard to eat without salad (they didn't have any at the time and we didn't know since we ordered online). Had I known I probably would have gotten something else. It is a tad bit expensive which is a down side as I feel you could get it cheaper elsewhere for the same quality or even better. Overall though, it is a good place to go and the portions were huge.

Worst fish and chips I've ever had. How on earth do you mess up fish and chips. Chips were soggy, bland and we're like they were in the box for over an hour. Even though we got there 30.kinutes after opening. The fish also were like it was in the box for 30 minutes. even though we saw them cook it fresh. Also tasteless and dry. Tare tare sauce is mainly mayo and gerkins. There is a taste but not really tare tare sauce .

Nothing special here, decided to give them a try but not worth a second visit, need to go back to Crispies.
