Rockfish in East Devon

This is a good fish restaurant situated on the quayside in Exmouth. It is part of a small chain of Devon restaurants and you will not go far wrong if you are looking for a casual night out with good local produce. There is a good selection on the menu and features fresh options on a daily basis. The staff are friendly and efficient which makes for a good night out. Not cheap! We also use their online fishmonger who are excellent & worth trying.

Great restaurant with lovely seafood, wine, a relaxed atmosphere, and brilliant staff. We visited Saturday evening (02/11/24), and the gentleman on front of house duties was very friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended.

Stumbled in without a booking during a busy time and they did their best to accommodate me. Food was excellent and the service was very attentive despite it being packed.

Five of us had a wonderful meal here after my son's passout.We hadn't booked but we're made so welcome by Tina our waitress.Our second visit and it won't be our last.

Went with my toddler (who had allergies) my dog, hubbie and parents. We couldn’t have been made more welcome. Super friendly staff who really cared about making sure our allergies were catered to. Unlimited chips!! (Definitely winning) and a warm fire. As well as some of the best tasting muscles I’ve had in years. Cooked to perfection. We will be back. Thank you

I booked a table for 8 of us to celebrate my birthday and the food was as incredible as always! The service was outstanding and nothing was too much trouble! Thank you all for making my evening so special!!!

Staff amazing from the moment we walked in. Made us, and our baby, feel so welcome. Felt really embraced into what felt like the RockFish family, and looked after. All the food and drinks were exceptional; couldn't fault a thing. The best lobster I have ever eaten; the cooking was spot on; such a treat. All fish and seafood very fresh, succulent and delicious. Thanks to all the staff, for making my birthday a wonderful experience with lasting happy memories. We'll be back.

Had a late lunch on Wednesday 16 with a pair of visiting friends, both of whom were celebrating birthdays (and so enjoyed the complementary prosecco!) We live locally and visit fairly often, and were delighted by our warm welcome from Stephen (Steven?) on a wet stormy day. Sophie looked after us attentively and we enjoyed hearing about her travel plans. The food was delicious as usual, and we were happy to take our time over it while chatting and watching the choppy waters. As we left they were planning to close the inner terrace because an exceptionally high tide was forecast, so we do hope their evening passed without incident. Until the next time!

Mixed feelings on expensive meal! Overall good shared starter of monkfish scampi, so we’re looking forward to our main courses. However this is where we were very disappointed! My bream was small slightly over cooked so skin was almost burnt and skin inedible accompanying salad was ok. My partner had Fruiti misso , which was a very poor offering of dry poor tasting fishy things in a dry batter, again a very small portion, the additional side salad ordered was just a bowl of green leaves that did nothing to improve dish! Our two puddings were fine. All in all very disappointed and paid over the odds for experience!

My friends who are 64 year old identical twins arrived from East Grinstead and I had booked a table at Rockfish for 15.45. We were greeted by warm and friendly staff and we enjoyed a table adjacent to the sea view windows and my friends dog was allowed to join us which was a real bonus. All 3 courses were excellent and we drove to my apartment happy and relaxed and replete.

Hake was ok but not as good as other Rockfish restaurants. Service was slow and unattentive.

This was some of the best seafood I’ve had in the UK. The staff were friendly and helpful, the oysters fresh. I can only recommend the fish and chips as well as the fried seafood platter. If available, make sure to ask for a table with a view because you’ll be looking right into the sunset overlooking the ocean.

Had an absolutely amazing meal at the Rockfish. I had the lobster which was cooked to perfection. The restaurant itself has a wonderful ambience and the staff were incredibly attentive. Will definitely return.

We go without reservation and the restaurant was half full but the person from entrance refused to give us a table. Very disappointed about . Maybe other Rockfish restaurants more helpful. Do not waist your time with Rockfish Exmouth!

Celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary on one of the last days of summer with a walk on the beach with our dogs followed by lunch at Rockfish. The staff made our visit extra special. Thank u - we truly appreciated your efforts and ‘best fishes ‘

Fantastic restaurant. We ate in the waterside terrace, stunning views across the estuary. Food was great, nice atmosphere and good service One minor irritation, a voluntary charitable donation on the bill. Just shouldn’t be on there. Otherwise great.

We had a lovely meal here, with a view of the sea. I liked having the curried mushy peas and jalapeño tartare with my fish and chips. Although, I don't think it is really worth getting lobster in this country

This restaurant is lovely, overlooks the harbour and sea and is a great environment. The staff were lovely and the food was incredible. Best fish and chips we’ve had. The unlimited chips were a massive bonus for us, and we enjoyed our visit very very much. Would really recommend!!

Dressed crab was over priced for what u get. My wife's fish wS great don't get yhe dressed crab. Go to your local fishing ger its way cheaper.

Service here is superb and very child friendly. Restaurant is kept very clean. Food quality is excellent. Expect to pay £50-£70 per head for 3 courses and a glass of wine. We will always return. Excellent fish restaurant

We visited on a Monday evening without a booking, a table was available by the lovely views of the sea. Excellent service and food! Pleased to see they cater for coeliacs!

Excellent quality seafood. We had the seafood platter which was so very good. Expensive, but worth it. Food is so good we are contemplating travelling 160 miles round trip for a Sunday Lunch.

We visited, without a booking, for lunch. We chose lobster. It was delicious, as were the unlimited chips and lightly dressed simple salad. Top marks to our waitress. Very professional, charming, and accommodating of special dietary needs. And ........ tutored us a little bit as we hadn't eaten lobster for at least a couple of decades.

What a place. Perfectly located on the edge of the estuary we had an inside terrace seat, the view was stunning. Our waitress Sophie was brilliant, writing the catch of the day options on the brilliant paper table cloth, with descriptions of the various seafood and their character. I am a seafood addict, preferring fish and crustacean to meat so this was an absolute delight. Prawns to start were covered in a delicate crisp, and perfectly cooked thin batter, the accompanying sweet/sour sauce not thick like the jars, sickly sweet and gooey. This was better balanced and not too sweet, served in a cute wooden ‘boat’. The mains, John Dory for me, with endless chips and a serving of Samphire, and a some garlic aioli on the side everything was perfectly cooked, damn delicious. To finish a perfect Lemon Tart with an accompanying Lemon Sorbet, the perfect end to a perfect meal. Highly recommended and definitely worth a detour if fish is your thing.

We visited twice and will gladly visit again. Our first visit was spontaneous and unfortunately they were fully booked, so we were happy to sit in the outside area. We enjoyed our meal so much that we ended up making a reservation for the following day. Our second visit was also for a birthday occasion. Upon arrival, the staff greeted us and to our surprise, they had placed a “Happy Birthday” message on our table. One of us was also treated to a complimentary glass of bubbles, which I thought was a lovely touch. On our second visit we reserved a table on their indoor terrace. The weather was quite windy, causing the waves to splash into the glass windows next to us which we – and the rest of the diners – LOVED! Now, onto the important part – the food was incredible. I highly recommend the catch-of-the-day options! We had a great dining experience, and a part of that was thanks to our waiter, Joey. He was incredibly helpful and when it came to recommending dishes from the menu. Their slogan "Tomorrow's fish is still in the sea," truly reflects their fresh approach. Thank you, team Rockfish.

Second time visiting Rockfish and was not disappointed, excellent all round. Food as fresh as it can be, service warm and very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. A credit to the company.

Excellent fresh seafood, friendly service, great setting on the terrace. First visit we watched a fisherman catching seaweed, second visit a speedboat giving trips to mates. Always boats going past.

Eaten at the RF before, hence a return was a planned treat, in the past the seafood and staff were fabulous. Maybe this was a bad day. All three mains were pretty disappointing. Dover sole simply wasn’t right, cold in the middle and flesh hard to remove from the bone(wondered if it has be frozen and not a fresh catch). Moules were small, a horrible colour and the sauce was minimal (usually the best part) dipping fresh french bread in the broth wasn’t possible. £3.50 for extra! - one bread roll, somewhat ridiculous. If only enough dipping bread was served the added roll would not have been required. Chips in the past, usually great, but sadly pale, some not fully cooked. Seemed straight from the freezer. The Dover Sole main was £39, think I could have spent £10 at the local chip shop and enjoyed it more. Hoping it was just unlucky. Appreciate good food and service, this review helps to keep standards high, and provide food worthy prices. Dissatisfied, overall and definitely not value for money.

A fantastic place to eat! After a little bit of research for a birthday treat while we were away this was booked back in June, for August. The service, atmosphere and most importantly food was amazing! The high prices reflect the quality. Particularly impressive was how we were made to feel like we were the only couple in the restaurant (it was really busy!) and the food was fast, fresh and delicious. Great knowledge of ingredients and able to adapt recipes for allergies and intolerances in order to give the best experience possible rather than just shrugging shoulders and being unhelpful like a lot of other restaurants. So, so good!!

Have been several times and again it was great. Good food, service and drinks. Lobster cooked to perfection. Such good value too. We will continue to visit.

I had a fantastic experience at the restaurant but I requested the fish be cooked with no vegetable oil or olive oil but with butter , but I think it was as I have the worst stomach cramps. They were quick to contact me and advised it could of had contamination from the grill, they have made me feel more confident it won't happen again , if I advise the server as to the allergy .

Lovely informal dining with great service. Enjoyed the shipping forecast and excitement of waiting to hear what's been caught that day. Delicious fish, let down a little by accompaniments which lacked depth. Looking forward to returning to try something else.

Nice way of explaining the catch of the day using the tablecloth. We also had a delicious lobster with a sea view while enjoying a local beer.

Great dinner. Kids really enjoyed the food and staff catered for my sons allergies excellently and without fuss - this is unusual. We ate the lobster, wing of ray and dover sole and my wife (vegetarian) had the veggie options which she enjoyed!

We had a takeaway haddock with chips and a children's fish and chips. The host was very accommodating, gave us great service and the fish was ready super quick, fresh cooked in about 5 minutes. And it was so tasty. Fresh, meaty haddock that was really delicious, great chips and we had curry sauce and tomato sauce with it that were clearly freshly made and tasty tangy and really added to the meal. We ate on the beach in the evening, a perfect meal. Will definitely go back.

Came here with my wife today for our 8year anniversary meal. The food was delicious, my wife had scallops to start, I had tempura veg, we both had full lobster for main, shared a brownie for desert and the drinks were lovely too. Want to say an extra special thanks to Emma who was our server today, she goes absolutely above and beyond, is extremely knowledgeable about your dishes and you could tell she is passionate about her service and job. Really great sea food, coupled with capable staff, makes for a great eating experience.

We went in hoping to be surprised but sadly not so. The crab was best described as average, the muscles were not the tasty meal we had hoped for, lacking in flavour, seasoning. The location and ambience was good, service was good.

Interesting menu, food was excellent, service friendly and efficient. Plenty of entertainment watching people trying to get their boats landed on the slipway in the estuary current! Quite noisy, but that added to the great atmosphere. If you can get a table on the terrace, the view is worth it.

The Rockfish fish restaurant 19.07.24.3pm A lovely position but what a rip off for fish and chips, we had 2x haddock and chips, b&b 1x mushy peas, 1x curry sauce one glass of wine and a squash £73 😱🤦‍♂️ The haddock was ok but the chips were hard and very greasy ☹️ we had to ask 3 times for our drinks to be served and eventually they came half way through the meal, I also object to an item on the bill marked donation £1, donation for what? 🤷‍♂️ Scores for location very disappointing.

Very child and dog unfriendly. Extremely SLOW service and portion size has decreased MASSIVELY. Dogs- how can you be considering yourself as 'dog friendly' when you don't allow a water bowl in the restaurant?! I can assure you my toddlers are more messy than my dog. Also- we were set down at the end table in the terrace. Fab. They tried twice to sit two couples in the table near us , where our dog was (just lying down or standing) but why put us and the other couples in an uncomfortable situation when you have SO many empty OTHER tables ?! Have some common sense! Children- staff super unfriendly, sour faced and oh SO slow and non-efficient. There was no offer to bring colouring for the kids (as opposed to the Exeter branch which is amazing) . Food took AGES to arrive, service very non-proactive- you need to keep asking them to take things away, bring extra plates for the kids etc...we ordered three scoops of ice cream for our toddlers , they bring it in ONE bowl. I mean...think! Or ask! Its not that hard is it?! Also- when you are feeding young children as a restaurant you need to mind timing!!!!! SO SLOW Food- yummy however (!) fish size has decreased massively! Chips- you mostly get tiny pieces instead of whole proper ones. Beer- why on earth don't you serve your beer COLD? It's a crime to serve it lukewarm on a hot day!!!!!!!!! Overall- would not come back or recommend -especially to young families . Teach your staff how to work as service people. Smiles are free!

Wonderful place for fresh sea food, we ordered: Starter: Cockle, Sardine Main: Devon Sole, Mussels (chips are unlimited!) Randomly came across this place, food is great! They are so fresh and taste so good. We come from Hong Kong where we have a lot of fresh seafood in our whole life, and this place doesn’t disappoint at all! The starters are so fresh and amazing, and for the main, I have seldom tasted fish so firm and sweet, and the mussels are the most tender one we have tried, definitely recommended! They say “tomorrow’s fish are still in the sea” and I hope it stay that way, I definitely taste the freshness. The servers will write on your table menu what’s the offer of the day with the market price. And they explain in detail what they are and how they would cook them. The terrace is wonderful, we came on a rainy day ans it’s still great, I am sure in a warm sunny day it will be perfect! Will definitely come again!
