The Powell Bar and Restaurant in Thanet

This really is a great pub and we very much enjoy visiting. We frequently go here to eat and can honestly say the food has always been very well cooked and presented. The Sunday dinner is really lovely with the beef in particular cooked to perfection. The staff are really friendly and can’t do enough to help you. Music here is always enjoyable either outside or inside in the welcoming cosy space. Good selection of drinks on offer too.

Had a nice Saturday afternoon pint in the sun, good choice of drinks and staff were very friendly.

Went to buy one get one free steak night. Steak was superb. Service was good. A great deal. But ask to see the drinks menu which was not offered don't just order 'a white wine' or a 'lager' when asked if they can get you drinks Some of the prices of the drinks were (to me) eye popping when we got the bill at the end. Other than that a great place to go.

Enjoyed it here, welcoming staff and other drinkers. Plenty to choose. Dog friendly area inside to.

I come to this pub often.the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Hdt a Sunday roast the beef was cooked perfectly as was the rest of it . very big portions.Highly recommend the powell

We visited the Powell yesterday evening (21/08) to try the American Night after previously trying the fish night and the steak night, the American Night is no longer being done however we still had the ribs and wagu burger on the buy one get one free which was what we wanted anyway. The food was lovely and great value and the staff were friendly and helpful as always. We will certainly be visiting again as we were also impressed by the steaks we have had on previous occasions. I really don’t understand why it’s not busier as it’s a lovely pub with great staff.

We were staying locally and wanted to find somewhere to have dinner. This did the job just fine, nothing special but good food and a warm welcome. They were running a 2 for 1 Wednesday night offer but 2 of the choices were not available. The food we had was well presented and tasty and the staff were attentive.

Such a shame for a nice venue to have a lack of choice. Does not sell tomato juice. Does not cater for lactose free drinks. Went elsewhere.

My friend & I decided to try The Powell for lunch today, first time. We were really pleased with our food choices, homemade lasagne for me (delicious) & my friend had scampi & chunky chips which she said was really nice. Both meals were £10 a real bargain, they have a good choice & it’s on a Tuesday so we were fortunate to go on the right day. Our waitress, Sophie was lovely, attentive but not ‘in your face’, would recommend trying.

Four of us had meals, we thought the food was very good and presented well we will be back again soon

Wonderful Sunday roast after a long walk - will be back sooner rather than later ! We had roast beef and roast chicken all cooked beautifully x couldn't finish portion as so large x smiling staff comfortable to be in and we aren't normally pub people ! Thank you to the chef !

We found The Powell by chance and what a fabulous place. It was fish & chips night. The food was excellent quality and also good portions. Beer was also well kept. Bring a Friday there was also music. The musician was very good, who also sang happy birthday for our friend. Also very dog friendly

My husband and I dined at The Powell. We went on a Thursday evening which is their Special Steak night Buy 1 get 1 free. The ribeye was tender and cooked just to our liking, the chips are triple cooked so are very crisp on the outside and so soft inside. Comes with fresh tomatoes and mushrooms. Comes with a rich tasting cheese sauce and peppercorn one. We asked for no salt in either sauces and served extra hot, no salt on the steak either or the chips ! Well worth s visit !!

From reading most of the reviews on here we must of had the bad chef today! everything was over cooked or didn’t taste like it should especially my daughter’s Chicken which was slimy and didn’t taste like chicken! Can’t complain about the staff but would be nice to be ask for a second drink.

Went for a birthday lunch here in April. Great value menu. Me and my mum both had the ham,egg and chips. Portion sizes were great, meal was lovely. The chips were amazing. Then had passion fruit eton mess for pudding, which was delicious. Staff were friendly and attentive. As it was my birthday they also done a special treat for me. Will definitely come back again. Great to see menus for different days also. Highly recommend!!

Lovely pub, friendly staff. Price of the wines exorbitant £12.20 for a large Rosa £9.90 for a large pino . £52.00 for 4 crayfish tail cocktails.which mostly seafood sauce.These are London prices. For a Saturday night only 2 tables in use.Want be going there again.

What a shame you have gone to card payment only. I was really looking forward to coming back to eat here, as we had a lovely meal last time. Unfortunately due to not agreeing with card payment only venues. I rate you 1 star. We spent £150 on our last visit, your loss as we would of been regular visitors.

We had to book a venue for my mother's wake at short notice. The Powell gave us an excellent price per head for a finger buffet. More people turned up than expected, but there was plenty for everyone. The dining area was set aside for us to give us some privacy. The staff were excellent and couldn't have given us better service.

We went for a Friday night meal, the restaurant was empty which was a shame as felt a bit like fish in a bowl. The food was tasty but a bit cold.

Unfortunately not impressed first visit for a while between bus's staff not that welcoming pint of Gadds 5 5 pounds not the best I've had but reasonable and card payments only which is never a good idea 4 out of 5 star's just.

Been several times and food was brilliant, however went tonight was told kitchen closed at 9pm It was 9.01pm. Only wanted a steak. Obviously doesn't need my custom so won't go back.

Not really sure how this place has high rating… First time in and we was left just stood there in the middle of entrance. One table full in the whole place and no staff. One staff sitting down on a laptop and said someone would be out. Waited 5 mins and still no one so we head to bar to get drink and no one there. Few mins later we was finally seated and served. By a nice lady. We ordered the shared for £55 and the presentation was lovely however the food was not great. The pigs in blankets were awful tasted like dirt/muddy taste I actually spat it out into a tissue. The ribs was microwaved with sauce on top and the chips were flavourless and not nice. Over all for £70 bill was very disappointed and both will not be returning. We was not asked if we wanted another drink or to look at the desert menu. Lucky we just wanted to leave.

If you're looking for a venue for a party then book the Powell! From the outset its been easy and stress free. Complete flexibility with food options and the food was the best we have had for a party locally. The venue is a cosy country pub feel and the rooms are comfy yet luxurious. Thank you Sophie and team for your help. 5 stars for all, only given 4 stars for location as no onsite carpark so guests have to pay to parking or park and walk from residential roads but this isnt a big deal.

Had our Christmas Work do here, hoping we went on a dodgy night but the slow cooked beef & garlic mash was so tough and was served with a watery gravy and no veg My friends vegetarian option was forgotten even tho we'd preordered Really unlike the Powell

Been here a fair few times and I was blown away each time. But tonight's dinner was awful, never like leaving bad reviews but consistency is key that's why we came back, have been put off coming here again. Starters, we're nothing compared to the same starter I had before. Specially for £9. The main was very very standard, mash was bit lumpy, grissile in the sausage & gravey was like water with minimal onion( baring in mind it's onion gravy). Everything just lacked in flavour. The only reason we ate was because we was starving. Was very disappointed.

I would encourage all musicians who book here to organise their payment method before performing as I was waiting over a week for payment and was lied to on more than one occasion!!! Had to chase the owner across different businesses in Kent to finally receive payment.

We've been to the Powell on a few occasions this year, while we have been planning our wedding at Chapel House Estate. Every time we've been there we have felt so welcomed that it feels like we're locals, even though we live 100 miles away! We booked out all 6 rooms at the Powell for our wedding guests, who all could not speak highly enough of the comfort and service provided during their stay. One of our family members who is just over 6'7 even said the beds were big enough or him! Which was a joy and surprise for him! We've eaten at the Powell as well on a few occasions and the food is always exceptional! Byron, the owner and Head Chef never makes a bad choice when it comes to food! And we can't wait to visit one of his other pubs and restaurants in the future. We also decided that it would be the perfect venue for our rehearsal dinner the night before, and the team at the Powell couldn't have been more accommodating to us, allowing us to take up their restaurant space for the evening! 30 of our close family and friends all in one place, getting ready to celebrate our marriage together was just wonderful. My only downside to The Powell is that it is so far away!! We both wish that we could be true regulars to this fantastic place!!

People have complained that no cash is taken, however not found an issue. I prefer card payments as more secure and those that moan can easily go elsewhere have found this a very present place

Popped my head in the door, asked if that was correct not accepting cash? They then confirmed so off we went, 6 of us to have a meal and drinks up the road, spent £160, that’s money this pub didn’t see! Oh well, they made their choice!

We stayed for 2 nights, booked at relatively short notice, in the Powell Cotton room.The room was very comfortable, beautifully decorated with a great shower, good sized bathroom and great bed.We had been told in advance that the kitchen was closed due to the staff shortages affecting the hospitality industry and have to say having looked at both the menu & reviews we were very disappointed in this but these are unusual times.The guest lounge was a nice touch and although it was a bit strange to come & go via the fire escape when the pub was shut it really wasn't an inconvenience. The staff we met, both on check in and when having a drink, were helpful and pleasant.We would definitely stay again, and hopefully we will be able to enjoy a meal then.

On holiday in Birchington. Went for a drink so popped into The Powell. We went in and ordered a coke and a cocktail as displayed on their cocktail menu board.The girl behind the bar said sorry " I don't work here so I'll go and get my sister. Her sister came in from an outside table . She laughed at us and said " the guy who does cocktails isn't here right now. What do you want?" I looked at my husband as I thought she was joking. NO. She wasn't joking. We ordered a coke and a mini bottle of prosecco. £9.35. Rather overpriced I feel! Unfortunately no business attitude by this lady. Won't be going back.

Myself and my husband decided this was the perfect place for an evening drink. They had a great selection of drinks on offer. It felt very Covid safe with options to sit inside or outside, everywhere was spotless and clean. The staff were all very happy to help and friendly towards us. A great evening had.

This is the second time I have stayed here. The rooms are reasonably priced and high quality which is why we come here. We have eaten in the restaurant several times and found the food to also be excellent.

I have to say it’s a beautiful pub but out of three staff members (3 being men) only the youngest one was working and the others were sat at bar on phones!!!

My partner and I decided to go into the Powell for Sunday lunch, and we could not believe how amazing the food was. We had pork, which was incredible, the taste and texture was out of this world. I would like to say special thank you to Matt, who served us and made sure we were looked after. Even with everything that is going on at the moment the Powell and staff were very welcoming and felt very homely. We will most certainly be going again.

Great meal here. Felt very COVID secure and spaced out - good selection of food and different beer. Would recommend this place.

A long awaited trip back to the stunning Powell for Sunday roast, perfection as usual and beautifully waited on by profesional friendly staff.Theyve worked extremely hard on following government guidence all cuterly sanitised and sachets of salt pepper on table no pots as to avoid contamination.We felt completley safe and at ease as everything had been well thought out and carried out.Thank you the Powell another visit which was petfect.

This place used to have style used to service people and great food now it’s just awful. The front of house staff are the worst in the area. Maybe birchington thinks it’s special but this place is dire it’s not only rude staff the girl serving who said she was a manager blamed us for her attitude. Needs a complete overhaul

went here on Fri night and the food was absolutely amazing we had Cajun spiced squid was absolutely amazing and I had the stone bass which was delicious my wife had the choc ale cake which was unbelievable well done to every one could not fault in any way and would highly recommend keep up the good work guys

Went to the Powell at the weekend its just so chilled and relaxing.The decor is stunning and beautifully unusual.Claire(The owner) is so welcoming and smiley its just lovely to see someone with such a unique character which is so warming and she treats all the customers with the same compasion and warmth.The atmophere just perfect.Our night was amazing thanks to the fabulous team so thank you.

Very nice meal all freshly cooked. Service was good not rushed in any way. And the atmosphere was quite and relaxing, just needed the log fire going.

Have visited this venue on a number of occasions and enjoyed the experience!On this occasion had booked a table for Sunday lunch on my wife’s birthday..I was aware that being a Sunday the menu was limited to mainly Sunday Roast which all our party were looking forward to.I should say at this point that the food and service that we received was super !However a major disappointment for many of my guests was that out of three roast meat choices on offer on the day only two remained (our booking was 3pm which I didn’t consider late and the restaurant was the quietest I have experienced on a Sunday) there was no roast beef left! So in conclusion this is a great place but go early if you want a full choice!

Our worst dining out experience ever. Me and hubby visited Powell on a Friday night. The place looked empty and were told to wait around and so we waited for 20 minutes before being finally sat down. The waiters looked as if they were forced to be there, unwelcoming and a little rude I found. Where we were sat was freezing cold so asked if we could move somewhere else, and was told and the other tables were reserved when there were only a few tables. We ordered some drinks, there is a good variety of wine. Starters arrived and were ok, bit bland for our liking though. We waited over an hour for main course by they time they arrived we had lost our appetite,no apologies. Wouldn’t recommend this place, the food isn’t very good but the poor service makes it a lot worse.

My husband and i had a amazing meal tonight served by lovely friendly staff who couldnt do enough for us.The curry was gorgeous which we asked for extra hot as we love spicy foods it was perfect.The atmosphere was as always perfect relaxing with beautiful soft settings overall a lovely chilled perfect setting thank you The Powell and perfect staff.

Went with some friends for a drink and food, unfortunately it was a huge disappointment for the place. Food was poor quality ; the steak was like rubber, it was bland and extremely dry. The waiters were very unwelcoming and unattentive. The other foods were also poor. Had better food in a roadside cafe!

Just got back from a lovely Sunday lunch this afternoon - just 3 of us - we gave 10 out of 10 - was perfect - thrilled to bits to find you- will defiantly be back Lovely clean place - very impressed - parked at the back and I asked the chef if this would be okay and he was so nice and said no problem - owner kindly moved his car to let his out - so all in all perfect Thankyou Trish

Had Sunday lunch the service and food was excellent very quick service and friendly staff. This is the second time we have eaten there and the standard is very good would recommend to anyone.

Wow what a superbly welcoming bar and separate restaurant. The staff were friendly and professional and most of all our food was exceptional. We all had sirloin steak which was tender and cooked perfectly. The desserts were lovely too. Cannot wait to go back again.

Stayed here for two nights as I was attending a wedding at Quex Park, a 2 minute drive or 7 minute walk from The Powell (if you are in heels ... take a cab!) What a fabulous place to stay! The accommodation (6 rooms) is beautifully decorated with spacious rooms, crisp white bed linen and all the amenities of a five star hotel. The bar and restaurant has a lovely welcoming atmosphere and the food is delicious. Breakfast was cooked to order and the standard was way above anything I have experienced in bigger well known hotel chains. The overall experience was delightful and is down in no part to the wonderful staff: from the bar to the restaurant all were terrific. Special mention to the chef/chefs: food was absolutely delicious!

My wife and I have been here on a number of occasions and whether we are popping in for a drink or having a meal it has always been great. The staff and service are amazing and the food is second to none. I would highly recommend their roasts.

We hadn't booked but the staff managed to squeeze us in. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. We both had the roast chicken. I must say, I think it was the best Sunday roast I have ever had. Suberb produce and cooked to perfection.

We were first in the restaurant but made to feel very welcome, the menus was quite short but still good choice for me and more importantly my teenage children. My son pronounced the ribeye to be in his top ten steaks (high praise), and the chicken dish for my daughter came with the sauce on side which meant she did actually try it. My pie was very good, mash maybe just a little heavy but great flavour and well cooked veg. Really good glass of Chapel Down white and a nice Malbec from a short but interesting list. This is a local's pub with a very good dining option, I would very happily go back for more

I needed a hotel close to Margate for the night but apart from chains most were full, but I saw this hotel listed. I wasnt sure what to expect but it was far far better than expections. Its not a huge place but this pub come hotel is beautifully and tastefully decorated. The bar downstairs is modern with its age craftfully blended to make a very pleasant pub. The hotel above has super clean and beautifully decorated rooms all with very modern en suites. The owners have manged to keep the buildings charm but make an equally beautifully boutique hotel. I loved the rooms unique style. It was close to a road but never aware of traffic. The staff were all very professional and helpful. Breakfast was served in a lovely sunny garden room. I would highly recommend this hotel. Ideal for exloring the area around. Well done

Always great food, service and food selection. The bar is lovely and cosy and a lovely atmosphere. Owners Robin& Clare are always pleased to see their regular customers. 😍 Their gorgeous rooms are lovely too! All highest quality and everything is new.

My mum was invited to a friend's husbands 80th birthday party which was being held at The Powell Bar and Restaurant. Its not hard to find at all. Right on the roundabout of the square in Birchington. Plenty of seating outside and in.

Had a great evening for fathers days, good service good range of excellent food and wine, definitely be visiting again soon.

Popped in for a late lunch recently following a review in the local press. It was busy but the staff were cheery and helpful and the food was every bit as good as the article had suggested. Well done, keep it up we will be back.

We came to Birchington to another restauranr which was closed due to a gas problem so ended up at the Powell Arms. It was a bank holday Monday so unusually it was open. Thank goodness because we had a wonderful meal from the bar meals menu. The egg which accompanied the asparagus was poached then fried in breadcrumb coating and was perfectly cooked inside. We chose 3 different mains and all were beautifully presented and tasted gorgeous. Our first time in Birchington and this restaurant will be first on our list next time we visit.

We stayed here on Sat night, the staff were all lovely and very attentive. We ate in the restaurant for our evening meal, which was so tasty.

Called there with my wife for lunch and a few drinks. Had one of the best steaks I’ve eaten in a long time, staff friendly and great service.

My wife ate here recently and the food was great. A lovely burger and fish with bubble and squeak.

we went there as a family meal there where 7 of us so we all had various meals and desserts,little bit pricey but good value recommend the chicken in the white sauce.

Me and my partner originally came in after being involved in an road incident. I asked if they had any CCTV of the high street but unfortunately they did not. However they directed me to the council that does! They also offered us water or a hot drink as they could see we distressed. Thank you so much for that.

Just had three nights here and had a fantastic time. The room was spectacular and the staff and food made for a great experience can't wait for an excuse to go back

Best Sunday roast ever, since moving to Birchington 2 years ago we regularly visit the Powel for a roast in that time we have never had a bad experience. The roast is consistently good and everything is homemade, love the fact that every roast comes with Yorkshire and stuffing and a lovely selection of vegetables with extra gravy. Staff are amazing make you feel so welcome and nothing is too much trouble, landlord and landlady also polite welcoming and friendly. Thank you for another fab meal today.

Another fantastic Sunday lunch for our son's birthday. Excellent service and superb food Very relaxed atmosphere and no pressure to leave the table.

The rooms are fantastic, just like staying in someones house! Pub is good but quite small. Restaurant was excellent for both dinner and breakfast. Staff are also excellent. Very good value. The Powell would not be out of place in an upmarket bit of Essex or Cheshire. Would definitely stay again if in the area - highly recommended.

Four of us were booked to eat at the Powell yesterday evening (Saturday). We walked in and it was just so busy. They couldn’t find my reservation because I had booked with open table and hadn’t checked the month and we were booked in for the following month . We apologised and started to walk out but the staff wouldn’t hear of it. They found us a lovely table in the bar and from then on it was perfect. The service, food, staff could not be faulted. Just cannot wait to book again . This restaurant deserves everyone of the excellent reviews it already has. Thank you all at the Powell !!

Visited with family who were down, very good and quite fine dining, they have certainly tried and the menu is very good. Sadly both bits of steak were very tough but would certainly give it another go.

Stumbled by on a Sunday lunchtime. Staff were happy to accommodate even though we hadn't booked ( I would advise you to do so).

Very convenient and hospitable. Bar plus restaurant - staff great and the food really good - portions are huge. They do specials as well. Make sure you book as nor enormous. I would thoroughly recommend.

Stayed in the new boutique rooms at the Powell and what a fantastic sleep I had.

Great décor and very friendly atmosphere. Came here for a birthday meal with friends and all left feeling extremely well fed.
