Homely welcoming pub with an excellent, unusual and creative menu. Everything is cooked to order which, understandably, takes some time. The service is friendly and efficient and the whole establishment has a lovely feel. Highly recommended for a meal with a difference in the Whitby area.

Extremely good home cooked lunches. Good menu choices. Best pub food I remember having. Quite a long wait but that shows it’s made to order, however it wasn’t busy on the day we went so I do wonder how they manage when it is. They could do with spending some time and money on the ladies’ loos which were clean but very tired.

We had a fabulous meal here. Everything was well cooked and delicious. Prior to arriving I emailed and informed the staff that I needed a Gluten Free meal. The response was very quick and very reassuring. On arrival the chef came to talk to me and explain the menu. As everything was cooked to order I was given a great choice of dishes. Excellent service indeed! All of the staff were friendly and professional. Would definitely return.

The food is really good although expensive. The staff are also friendly and efficient. One negative is that the chef who i believe is also the landlord often comes out of the hot kitchen into the bar with his shirt covered in perspiration. This is disgusting and unhygienic. He should stop doing that

An old country pub, small but atmospheric but nothing that can't be found throughout North Yorkshire. Food that we had was excellent quality and the starter I had was large enough to deter me from ordering even a dessert. No way could I have eaten a main meal in addition. The other main meal ordered was plentiful and beautiful tastes. Food took 50 minutes to arrive and we ordered at 6.40pm and the place was not really busy. The down side was that the menu given to us was significantly more expensive than that on their website. The main meal we ordered was £4 more. The "starters" were about £2 more than the website. The price of drinks is quite honestly ridiculous. £5.70 for an average quality beer and half a cider at £3.25 on draught. No need to pay these prices, the drinks were nothing special. Being relatively local of course we know the area and live not too far away and the Esk Valley is a special place but it's not The Cotswolds. We agree with a previous comment that the locals were given preference and it was obvious who they were. We won't be going back but enjoyed what we ate.

Went with friends for lunch and beers. Great authentic pub character. Staff engaging and good humour. Hand pulled beers well kept. Food excellent, the chips are proper chunky old fashioned chips.

For my birthday I took the family to The Postgte Inn on the 17th March 24. The food and the service was excellent, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Four if the party opted for the Sunday lunches, two selecting beef and selecting the lamb. The fifth member, my granddaughter opted for sausage, but served with two huge Yorkshire puddings. The meats were tasty, decent size and served at a good temperature. Plenty of veg, and a favourite of the parties was the mild curried parsnips. Great selection of sweets, and my wife and I shared 3 of the smaller portion options. The Taylor’s Boltmaker beer was spot on, and the overall price for the food & beverages was very reasonable for the excellent size portions and quality! We will definitely return!

This pub was very welcoming. All the staff have been more than accommodating, pleasant and chatty and the other patrons happy to chat too. We ate here 2 evenings while in our break away from home (which speaks for itself as we returned after our first meal). All food was fresh, delicious and cooked extremely well. We made a couple of adjustments which were happily accomodated. Just wonderful!!. Yes it's a little more expensive than some others in the area but we think it was well worth every penny. Thank you to all at the Postgate Inn.

Very tough and expensive beef Wellington ordered for myself on a reserved table. Beer and wine way overpriced for what is a simple local pub but trying to be pretentious. Large party of 6 on adjacent table who appeared well known to barman and owner who were constantly given preferential attention, with one woman dominant with incessant loud talking. Ultimately our meals came. My wife's rather overpriced fish course and my Beef Welligton brought out. My "plastic" chips were some of the worst ever bought and at nearly £35 for Wellington, chips and very hard (hardly cooked) vegetables was a disgrace. On cutting into the fillet?????? steak it was tough and of poor standard. The only really good point of the meal was the additionally purchased homemade onion rings (so why not homemade chips). Complained to barman about steak and he said he would tell the chef/owner. Owner severally came out to talk to those who he apparently knew but never attempted to come over and ask what was the problem with the steak. Ultimately after finishing our drinks I went to bar to pay and the owner came to the bar to take payment. I asked was he aware of my complaint...he said he was and then went into an explanation that "the other table in the corner had not complained about their 3 steaks" I advised him I had to ask for a proper steak knife to cut mine and even then it was tough to cut....we had noted that on the other table the steak eaters were having difficulty cutting through their steaks. The offhand owner then commanded the barman to deduct the cost from the bill......we left and will not again return.....our recommendation for others is to walk down the road to another pub/restaurant (Horsehoe Inn)where the food we had the following evening was delicious and reasonably priced in a very ambient and friendly manner and place.

Couldn’t recommend this place enough. The food was brilliant, meat cooked perfectly and the server was attentive and polite. Very fresh and well presented meals. I had the chicken liver parfait to begin, followed by filet of beef with black pudding, a bed of mash, scallops and seasonal veg.

Excellent food , friendly service and very Dog friendly. We were looking for something different to the usual " everything with chips" menus . The Postgate food was superb , beautifully presented and tasted amazing . Lovely fresh fish and served with plenty of freshly cooked vegetables.

Wow what a little gem,wanted a roast beef but was given a menu that didn’t have that on although they did serve them,so opted for escalopes of beef fillet was out of this world it really was, would highly recommend

Absolutely superb - delicious food and a very friendly and welcoming landlord and chef - and dog friendly too and nothing too much trouble - excellent value and would highly recommend for any occasion. The black pudding starter is the best ever and the beef wellington was perfect. The smoked haddock mains was so tasty and the chef added a perfectly cooked poached egg. What an amazing place, very friendly, food out of this world. A great place that allowed us to stay in our campervan in the car park. Will definitely be back.

Love the fact this restaurant uses local produce and all the food is properly homemade. The menu sounds delicious, but in reality we found our food rather mixed. I ordered the local lamb. The mash was delicious, the gravy/sauce was outstanding, and the most delicious thing on the plate was in fact a slice of black pudding. However the supposed star of the show, the lamb, was almost invisible, and decidedly lack lustre. I was served three very tiny noisettes, which were rather more over cooked than the promised “pink” on the menu, and not very enjoyable. My husband opted for the sirloin steak - but unfortunately it was very chewy indeed. The chips and salad were very underwhelming, and the onion rings were horrible, tasting merely of old cooking oil. On the plus side both the surroundings, and the front of house personnel, were lovely. All in all we were very disappointed. It was expensive for a meal I could have cooked better at home. I am giving this a four star rating as the good bits were indeed excellent and deserved a five - but the poor bits were very average, and very underwhelming indeed.

Dissapointingly the white chocolate brulee proved not to be the classic set custard, flavoured with white chocolate. The drive is easy and quick from Whitby to this adorable pub. Lucky for us since we went twice to find that they were not serving food. Their website doesn't post any times for serving food, so we recommend calling ahead.
