Popped into the Excelsior Fisheries for lunch. Superb Cod and chips and seafood basket with chips and homemade tartar sauce. Cooked to perfection! Archie should be very proud of this business which has a personal touch. Thank you.

Very tasty. Also very busy but well worth the wait. Note: if you want seaside fish n chips don't head down to Staithes Harbour as there's no chippy down there. Excelsior is your only option.

As good as it gets prices up but still good value

Visited here today after a nice walk with friends the fish and chips are amongst the best I have had can highly recommend. Service was very friendly.

First rate fish and chips. Delicious, fresh cod in crisp batter, not too greasy. And the fish cake was excellent too. Spot on!

Formerly rated as 5 star. Been looking forward to this all week. Got in, told no haddock even though only jumbo haddock showing out of stock, fine. Cod then. Chips and gravy, no gravy available- it’s powder added to hot water? Fine, peas. Ordered, walked 5 min back home, whole thing was totally dry and disappointing, chips were undercooked. I’ve been here for years and adored the food, I get the impression the people working there just can’t be arsed. Real shame, lost a customer of many years and spoilt my night with my wife on last night of holiday.

Whilst on holiday in North Yorkshire we had a day near the coast. Looking on the map Excelsior Fisheries was the only place the was still open and had very good reviews too. We got there just before closing one lunchtime and they cooked us fresh cod and chips for 4 of us and 2 children’s meals which came with a free drink.There was a board displaying where the fish was sourced and even the variety of potatoes for the chips and the fact that they were fried in beef dripping. I can honestly say they were the best fish and chips we’d ever had. The shop was very clean, the food was delicious and we were very impressed. If we’re ever back that way we’d certainly make the effort to go again.

Just Good Fish and Chips. My cod and regular chips was £8.90 at time of writing * The longest I've ever waited to get served and to receive my fish and chips but I didn't mind a good atmosphere in the shop. Apparently, a power cut in the afternoon and a biker event lead to a perfect storm of delays. All those that missed in the afternoon were back in the evening. If power cuts are to become more regular a back up generator wired in to the mains might be a solution for the business like this.

Excellent fish and chips, cooked to order. Friendly service and great value. Just wish we lived a little nearer. An eight hour round trip is too long to make this a regular treat. A trip to Excelsior will have to remain one of the must dos on our list for our annual Staithes visits.

Popped in on our way home and were not disappointed the premises was spotless welcoming and service was excellent. Fish and chips were excellent delicious would highly recommend.

Disappointed again…. We used the Fish and Chip Shop frequently when the previous owner ran the place…..first class… We were there for the change over to the new owners….teething problems meant we didn’t go back…..but we recently read some great reviews…..so gave it another go…. Sadly our first impression was correct…. Haddock turned out to be Cod? Soggy chips are never good. It’s an average chippy….no better or worse than many others but it does make Liverton Fish and Chips look really good…which they are……

Delicious fish and chips, really fresh, without too much excess oil. The staff are young and seem to enjoy working together. Very popular on a Saturday evening, we waited a little white, but totally worth it

Our second visit and once again excellent cod, chips, mushy peas and gorgeous tartare sauce. The cod was moist and flaky - delicious! Hope to see you again next spring.

The fish & chips were amazing. Freshly prepared , not greasy and a lovely crispy batter. Just how we like them. Home made tartar sauce was excellent too

We visited last Saturday having just arrived for a week staying in Staithes. The fish, chips and mushy peas were amazing, as were the scraps. The landlord of our holiday let had recommended it. My only moan would be the girl serving. She chatted away to her male colleague (who engaged with my husband about the football and was pleasant enough) but when it came to us, she looked at us as if we were annoying tourists. If I looked at my clients that way, I wouldn't have any! Sad as the food was as good as we'd heard it was.

Excellent fish and chips. Not really close enough to eat them at the seafront but plenty of good options to find a perch and enjoy the views.

Firstly the positives, good portion sizes and spectacular fish. Cooked nicely and not too greasy. Now for the negatives, the chips were disgusting. They were black and green and should never have been used, never mind sold. I suspect a rotten batch of potatoes, and it meant we never ate ours. If we hadn't have been so far away we would have returned them, but it's the reason for the 3 star review.

Had fish and chips the other week chips were mostly black been back tonight chips were the same. Sorry but you should not be serving them. Your customers deserve more of a better standard than they are currently getting. I normally recommend this fish shop will not be from now on

Had fish and chips a few times from here most of the time they are ok but last couple of times been disapointed we bought some today and many of the chips were black . They must have bought a bad batch of potatoes

Delicious chips cooked in beef dripping. Succulent fresh fish and home made tartar and curry sauce. Very friendly customer service. We would highly recommend a trip to this chip shop. We ate in which was very convenient. Dan who served us was very amiable and recommended local places to visit.

Brilliant eatery to call into, young staff with pleasant and helpful attitudes, the food is the best fish and chips I have tasted for a very long time,seating inside to rest weary legs and enjoy the atmosphere ,5 of us called in today (Good Friday)and what a welcome,food served up quickly,the prices were as good as the food,a little gem of a place....thank you for your lovely food and pleasant welcome...if you are in that area this is a fishy not to miss out on.

Outstanding fish white thick chunky cod in lightly battered . I don't get chips with mine but I pinched dome from my husband . The chips were crispy on the outside golden in colour snd fluffy in the middle 10 out of 10 As for the service nd cleanliness I could not fault . I even went back inside to say their were the best I have ever had. Thank you Michelle Rowe

A young crew, but work great together and excellent service. The fish and chips were awesome. We travelled to try this venue and were not disappointed. 100% beef dripping and sustainable fish at a great price. I just wished we lived locally 😊. Thank you

Always a pleasure to go to excelsior the food is great having tried a good selection of the food having work just down the road. I can say I highly recommend. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They go above and beyond when placing large orders. Could recommend more highly 10/10

There are closer fish and chip shops to my house, but I always come here. The fish is cooked perfectly, (batter is to die for), as for the chips, just how I like them!

We were not disappointed with our fish 🐟 and chips 🍟, nice thick piece of fish with a crunchy batter and plenty of chips that were delicious 🤤.

Food was spot on , nice and fresh also the homemade tartare sauce just hit the spot 🙏

Decided on fish and chips on one of our nights staying in the village and had been here on previous visits. We chose to eat in at one of the tables which is a very welcome bonus and means you get to eat every fresh from the fryer. The food was gorgeous, great sized fish which was lovely and white and flakey with superb batter. The chips and mushy peas were also excellent. The young lad on the fryer certainly knew what he was doing and asked how everything was and seemed genuinely proud of what he was producing. As good as any fish and chips we've had

First went a couple of months ago: Great welcome, great atmosphere, fabulous fish and chips cooked to perfection in beef dripping!!! Returned a couple of weeks later looking forward to a repeat performance: Great welcome, quieter in shop and fish and chips were much smaller, although the taste was still excellent! Returned end July as part of my birthday celebrations, only to find shop closed due to 'new arrival in the family'!! Went back last week: No greeting, no customers and tripped over the sombre atmosphere in the shop. There seemed to be a new fryer, who was learning. He was doing his best, but had no support from the owner and usual fryer. Fish was tiny, undercoojed and extremely greasy sat upon a mountain of lukewarm, greasy chips...... Not his fault, btw - he needed guidance!! I WILL return, soon and trust all will be back to usual standard 🤞

Decided to get a chippy on our first night of our holiday as we CBA to cook - Well pleased we went to Excelsior. The staff are friendly and efficient and the food is top notch, pro tip - Try the black pudding fritters, absolute game changer. The chippy does get busy but in my view that's a good thing as you never go to a chippy without a queue - Highly recomend it.

The service and food is exceptional. They’re constantly excellent. We ordered 2 large cod and chips last night and the portions are accurate, it fed 3 of us easily. Staff are really friendly and food is cooked to order. Prices are fair. Can’t recommend enough.

What a shame about this place I came here 8 weeks ago had the best fish and chips that I decided to drive here from Whitby just to get dinner. The fish was half the size compared to last time, food tasted nice not as nice as first time around so I won’t go out of my way again such a shame. Photos of difference.

What a shame came here 7 weeks ago was that great I came out of my way from Whitby to call here again. Not as nice and fish was extremely small. I won’t come out of my way again however it’s not the worst fish and chips just not worth going the extra few miles for now.

Was here at easter weekend... Worth the hike up from the shore for fantastic fresh chips and perfection in fish... Also family loved the chip shop curry sauce, great staff too 😋🐠

We ordered fish and chip meals for all 4 of us. The fish was fine quality wise, the chips a reasonable portion, but the fish was simply not big enough/adult size, despite an adult size price.

Absolutely beautiful fish and chips

We are regular visitors to Runswick but had our first visit to Excelsior Fisheries earlier this week. Both had haddock & chips with a portion of mushy peas. The fish was some of the best we’ve tasted from a chip shop & lovely non-greasy chips. The place seemed spotlessly clean & staff polite & obliging & clearly taking a pride in providing a good service. We’ll definitely be back.

This looks nice inside, with modern decor and tables/eating spaces. It may have just been a case of not ordering to their strengths, but I had the scampi and was slightly disappointed. A few weeks earlier I'd bought scampi up the coast in Saltburn and that was better. This seemed a bit dried out. Would give it another go, but would order something different.

Popped in to grab lunch today while in the area. Dave ordered a cod and it was large and tasty. Staff were pleasant and everything we had was good

The best fish and chips we've had for a very long time, the fish was super fresh. We were impressed with the black board detailing where the fish and potatoes had come from and that the fish was caught sustainably. Would recommend.

Called in last Saturday busy so thought good. Didn't have a massive order but got my order two minutes drive back to caravan but sad to say everything luke warm, poor size portion of chips did ask for large .

Just popped in to pick up dinner for a family of five tonight. All cooked fresh to order, we had small fish and chips, jumbo cod, fish bites, pineapple fritter, black pudding fritters, mushy peas and curry sauce. All five of us thought it was excellent, not at all greasy and good value for money. The fish was superb and some lovely scraps on top to cap it off. Very full now but will definitely be back. Well worth it if you are in the area.
