Called in here this morning for breakfast. Very welcoming and friendly team, cosy decor, an extensive tea selection served in lovely pots and a pretty wonderful breakfast menu. Enjoyed the Full English.

If you’re looking for somewhere for breakfast in Whitby you can’t find better. Genuinely excellent! The best quality, freshest and tastiest cooked breakfast I’ve had. For my wife the veggie breakfast options weren’t just the typical choices, the Veggie stack was something a bit special. Next time we’re in Whitby we’ll definitely be back.

Quiet breakfast on a Friday morning. Really tasty breakfast in nice surrounds. Quality over quantity. Definately worth the effort in finding it.

Just called for breakfast Sunday 11 November Excellent breakfast well presented nice friendly staff coffee spot on would highly recommend.

Stopped here during the goth weekend on Saturday and loved it! Been here many times and they are always busy with good reason. Coffee was great, table and toilets were clean. As mentioned it was super busy but the waitress still managed to get things quickly and remember all the cakes on offer. Cannot wait to visit again next year

O dear. Loved this place: young enthusiastic staff, wide variety of gins and other interesting drinks, super salads, open and closed sandwiches. Our Whitby destination alongside a good wet fish shop. Now just another caff. Good luck to the ladies running it but it needs to be smartened and the grubby menus replaced. We should have known when we arrived at 1pm on a sunny midterm day: deserted quadrangle and mostly empty indoors.

We have always liked this cafe. Unfortunately outside area currently closed. Limited range of cakes etc but nice for a coffee stop

Brunch was very good, with good service. The Yorkshire pudding wrap looked amazing as did the cakes

Always a fantastic warm welcome at Rusty shears, a great quirky little bistro, fantastic food. I had Fortunes kippers, which are absolutely delicious, my wife had muslie with yoghurt and berries and a fresh pain au chocolate. Always come here every time we visit Whitby. Highly recommended

We went twice for breakfast as we so enjoyed the first time. Lovely atmosphere, excellent service and good quality food. We will definitely go back if we are in Whitby again.

Only had a tea and scone which was tasty. Expected more of the garden area. Definitely disappointed in that as overgrown branches etc. Also scaffolding erected which I know cannot be helped.

We loved everything about this place! It's a bit hidden away but well worth seeking out for brunch. The signature dish 'Rusty's Stack' was really nice with a perfect poached egg and black pudding on a potato scone with hollandaise sauce and sweet chilli relish. Delish!

Good service and lovely breakfast menu! Salmon breakfast didn’t state it was on toast and chives massively overpowered the scrambled eggs but these were small snags The tea menu is amazing!

First time we have been in today, had a breakfast, food was really nice , service spot on and it's a quiet little place to eat would recommend.

Called in for lunch but chose the Eggs Benedict from the Breakfast menu which was available. It was fabulous ! 2 poached eggs perfectly cooked, each on a slice of sourdough toast on top of spinach & topped with the hollandaise sauce. Can highly recommend this lovely place in a vintage setting with real brick fireplaces.

Wonderful hidden gem. We found this little restaurant by chance. Food delicious. Will definitely be back.

Lovely place to get a nice coffee in a great tucked away premises

Lovely sharing boards, and prosecco is delicious! Really enjoyed sitting in the little courtyard on a sunny afternoon. Good service, clean.

We waited 45 minutes for incredibly average food. Coffee was average, staff were kind but we had to ask for our food 3 times.

Went in at 10 on a bank holiday for breakfast. Waited for at least 45 mins until food finally came. They have quite a bit space for customers but probably not a big enough kitchen.

Had a wonderful lunch here whilst visiting Whitby. A very quirky place with a courtyard and well as indoor seating. Food was excellent as was the service. Dog friendly as well

Lovely breakfast at this delightful little restaurant.

Lovely courtyard enticed us in for breakfast. The food was OK if a little pricey and the service very slow. The bacon and mushrooms were very tasty although the sausages and black pudding not the best quality. Please find someone who can cook poached eggs, they were all overcooked with hard yokes, especially bad with eggs benedict as this spoils the dish entirely.

First time here and so impressed with food here is not cheap eats but you get what you pay for. The Highland stack is so good - sour dough toast with haggis poached eggs whisky sauce and lots of trimmings.

Reserved a table , arrived everything ok busy we sat down after nobody came went to ask for a menu very rude waitresses shouted to another to give us a menu we were given 1 between 4 with pages missing.A nice couple passed there's over . After no body came 15 minutes later a gentleman asked to order the waitress said can’t you see we are busy we will be over soon. That was it we left terrible service and attitude don’t visit.

Used to be a lovely place with great food. It has sunk right to the bottom. The food is now very expensive tourist rubbish. Think they've changed owners. Avoid at all costs!

I'm just in love with this place! Beautiful environment with cute touches and attention to detail, friendly staff and deliciously well presented food. Dog friendly too - was given her own little cup of doggy treats!

I recently visited Rusty Shears in Whitby and was thoroughly impressed. The establishment offers cosy outdoor seating in a charming courtyard, as well as indoor tables spread across several rooms. The interior of the restaurant is striking with its vintage atmosphere. The building, crockery, and decor all contribute to a sense of stepping back in time. You can truly feel the history in the air, which adds a unique charm to the place. The service at Rusty Shears is excellent. The staff are polite, attentive, and work very efficiently, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Overall, Rusty Shears is a fantastic spot for those who appreciate a historic ambiance and top-notch service. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Whitby!

Was funny watching all the waitresses walk past completely ignoring us for about 20 minutes before we decided to take our custom elsewhere. rude and awful service

I didn't get a chance to try any food or drink here, I wasn't even acknowledged. Staff could see I was waiting and just kept walking past me completely ignoring I was there. After 20mins not even a menu was offered. Really really bad customer service and treatment.

A gorgeous little tucked away courtyard with a cute tea shop on one side and a bar on another. We just had drinks but the menus for breakfast and lunch looked good.

Visited here today for breakfast for the first time. Had a full English and a bacon sandwich. The quality of products was fantastic very tasty. There was no fault AT ALL. Top level. Every single part of the breakfast was cooked fresh to order and everything was piping hot even the toast. Staff very attentive and pleasant. Thankyou 👍

This spot well worth seeking out - especially if you are a celiac. They provided my husband with a choice of dishes, and he was able to eat a delicious all day breakfast which was gluten and contamination free! The rest of us had delicious lunches too! Had we not been looking for this cafe we would not have come across it in Whitby. Definitely go again when we are near

Well despite a mixture of reviews we cannot fault one single bit of it, the location is brilliant , the service was great & the Rustys Breakfast was Excellent we had Tea & Coffee between us which was equally delicious , if we find ourselves in these parts again we will be back 😊

Beautiful little cafe with a nice selection of food and drink, along with a wine and gin menu too! The decor is quirky and is nice to look at whilst enjoying your food and drink. Staff advised us on which table to sit at for the 6 of us. Our order was taken quickly and also came out to us quickly. The cheese scones were very nice and were even served warm. Unfortunately, my grandmother had a fall whilst we were visiting. There was a step down right as you come out of the cubicle in the toilets, which caused her to lose her balance. She fell and injured her knee and cut her head. Not the cafe’s fault of course, but the staff were very nice about it and apologised. They got my grandmother a chair and a first aid kit which was great. Perhaps another sign on the inside of the cubicle door to remind you of the step when you come out? Overall we really enjoyed our visit and all members of staff were lovely, especially after my Grandmother’s accident. We shall be visiting again when we’re next in Whitby.

A great little cafe that does very tasty brunch. Plenty of specials too.

Quirky little cafe at the top of the hill off a side street with a lovely little courtyard that takes you through to a eclectic, homely cafe selling breakfasts and lunch time dishes. A couple of vegetarian items on the main menu plus a lovely Rustys veggie snack on the specials board, which is; a couple of potato cakes topped with wild mushrooms & poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, tomato and dried onion. All very nice but the service was slow and we had to ask for them to take our orders as I think they'd forgotten us and the dried onion was too hard for me, it felt like I was eating twigs. Apart from that, it's worth making the treck to find it.

It looks like a tea room, but it's so much more. Excellent selection of sandwiches and other lunch items and a quirky decor.

Popped in here while holidaying in Whitby. Absolutely gorgeous. Very old cute building quite quirky. The food was absolutely gorgeous and excellent service. Will be returning.

Fabulous service and menu. I had fish finger ciabatta with loads of yummy salad. My husband and youngest son had the stack and my eldest son had the full breakfast. Been many times over the years and never disappoints. Changes it’s ownership but remains flawless Thank you

Not cheap, but a nice cup of tea. Quality food too, with interesting vegetarian options. Try something different and you won't be disappointed.

We called here just before closing time. The food was excellent, well presented and tasty. Even though it was closing time we didn't feel rushed, good friendly service.

Every time we come to Whitby, this is a destination cafe for us to have a meal, especially a nice breakfast. Lovely staff, good portion sizes, good prices, relaxing atmosphere with a quiet courtyard to dine in when the weather is nice.

A very tasty lunch of a vegetarian wrap (with Coronation Chickpea!) and nicely prepared salad. Prompt, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere tucked away behind a quiet courtyard. Recommended.

Did like the place before they got involved with discrimination. Looked into it further. The woman who owns the place has couldn't run a in a straight line let alone run an eating establishment worth visiting. "Goths aren't welcome" well I'm not goth and I will be avoiding this place just for how offensive they are to the goths. Many of my friends will no longer visit due to the sheer disgraceful behaviour and comments from the "owner".

Fabulous once again. HOMEMADE gluten free including pizza base pizza and Gluten Free beer. Perfect! Really is fabulous pizza and price wise a bargain. Setting gorgeous. Service magnificent. Has it changed since this last review? Rustys has changed hands but still the same dedication to ensure ceoliacs are safe and that the food is fabulous. Same chef and a new one too. Highly recommend and I'll be calling in more often now the sun is back

Hidden gem. The food and the service were excellent with a great menu choice for mains and some gorgeous cakes. Portions were generous and the staff were brilliant. Dog friendly, seats outside of the weather is good l. Highly recommend.

Been coming here for the last 4 years and today was so disappointing. Drinks fine. Food - not good. When asked if everything ok said no and explained but just got a 'okay then'! Will not be returning.

Underwhelming. Food was average. Service and atmosphere was not great. Staff seemed to care more about talking to their mates than attend to everyone. It felt awkward, like we had intruded. We arrived 10 mins before opening. Very disappointing and I would not return with such good other options.

My husband and I plus our two dogs were made very welcome at this cosy cafe. We ordered prawn sandwiches which were very impressive with a huge side salad and lots of filling. Tea and a cappuccino were very much enjoyed. Service was friendly and quick.

Wow, this quirky cafe on silver street is one of the best cafes in Whitby. Tea for two came in an enormous teapot, with china cups and saucers, real tea too, tasted just like my gran used to make. Old fashioned recycled furniture looks great. And the food is gorgeous, veggie choices were great, coronation chickpea, with warm beetroot and halloumi delicious 😋 Good value for money and family run, so lovely to see Would recommend and revisit. I've just eaten the best wrap EVER!!!!!! It was a falafel wrap with mango chutney, coronation chickpeas and mint yoghurt with a sweet chilli dip....delicious. Everything was fresh and so tasty and the wrap was packed full. You simply must try this. I also tried, for the first time, a pistachio and marzipan tea and this too was superb, if you like pistachios and marzipan as much as me. My friend's had the bacon and brie on toast and the smashed avocado on toast and both loved them. The service was great and the interior of the cafe was like a old fashioned eclectic teashop with miss-matched teacups etc. A great place.

This is a superb cafe for a late breakfast! I arrived around 11am and was seated quickly and had an amazing cup of tea while waiting on breakfast. While I will say the service was a bit slow and hit or miss, I can understand it as they seemed understaffed. However, this was easily forgivable considering the amazing food that was served to me. Everything was full of flavor! I highly reccomened this restaurant!

Stumbled across this place as normally go to Sanders yard. Beautiful place, friendly staff and the avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs certainly helped with my hangover. Will definitely come back 🙂

6 of us decided to just pop in to this little back street cafe restaurant. Lovely little courtyard area and plenty of inside seating. Cakes were delicious and sandwiches top-notch. We also had the sea food chowder, which was lovely and packed with all sorts of fish. And home made tomatoe soup and fresh bread. Only down side was it took 30 minutes to serve all 6 of us, and items came out one at a time so the hot food would have been cold if we hadn't eaten it straight away and wait for everyone to get their items. Drinks are reasonable, and prices are good. I think the staff were a little over run as it was reasonably busy. Would go back but perhaps only when it was a little quieter.

The falafel wrap with salad was just gorgeous. I'm rubbish at remembering to leave reviews so the fact I'm typing this says how good our lunch was last Saturday. The salad was beautiful and not just a throw on the side forgettable thing. Dressing was so good I had to ask what was in it! All round great lunch in a hidden away spot with quirky furnishings and friendly accommodating staff. Not having visited Whitby in years I was grateful to find this gem of a place with its little sunny courtyard and lovely inside space. Note to anyone hating crowds - weekend's are v busy around the harbour in Whitby and going up to the Abbey. Get there early to park. Would return happily just to eat here again. Yum.

Compared to last year - food quality was good but when it’s cold it kind of defeats the object - shame as it was a 10/10 last year

Decent if not outstanding. Lovely courtyard, interior also pleasant. Ordered various brunches between us. Was merely OK. Weird ambiguous tasting smashed avocado. Bacon and sausages were a bit supermarket. Delicious Oolong tea. Step up the food and this would be a great out of the way spot.

Nice food but long wait for it over an hr and nobody told us wait would be that long .

Gorgeous smashed avocado with salmon and poached egg on toast. Absolutely scrumptious. Fresh leaf peppermint tea, always a must when at rusty shears. The cakes were saying eat me eat me but I had my slimming world head on and I resisted. Grrrr. Will be back soon.

What a wonderful little find. We said outside in the courtyard and it felt as though you could have been somewhere in Europe. Great food and good service.

Love this cafe- I had the best Mushroom soup in the world! Lovely cake, perfect breakfast. Staff are lovely and the decor is so fitting. Thanks a lot xx

Just visited this nice little place , food was lovely but when we came to pay the girl said “ it’s card only” no body told us this when we were told to sit at a dirty table, and one chair missing my husband stood while the girl cleared the table never even noticed…. Service was good but will question going back

First time we had visited & we would come back. Straight away, I think Lee was so welcoming. Services was good. A few small errors but nothing major. Food was brilliant. Jam was a favourite & freshly made by the chef. Really nice place. High recommend a visit.

If you're in Whitby, this place is a must. Really great coffee, really friendly staff and the food is great. The courtyard out front is really nice and is a sweet, little oasis from the hustle and bustle.

Wow! What a great find. Quirky, bags of character and charm. Food amazing, we had eggs Benedict and eggs royale, beautiful poached eggs. Loved the tea pot and loose tea, latte hot and very nice. Would highly recommend 😀

A visit to Whitby wouldn't be quite the same if we didn't pop in for breakfast here. Good choice and all freshly prepared. Nice surroundings both in the courtyard and in the building itself. Staff are fantastic and very obliging. Also happy to accommodate for Gluten Free options where needed.
