What a wonderful find . We were so pleased to spot this little gem having walking away from the bustle of the shopping area as what we got was a real pub with the most amazing and polite staff . The main choice on the menu were limited but the choice and taste of the starters were something else. We chose 3 starters and their taste and amount provided was exceptional. Certainly worth heading the few steps away from the centre

We booked The Barn upstairs for a 90th Birthday Celebration. We had 32 guests, ranging from 2 yrs to 90 yrs old. The Plough laid on a reception under the outside covered area, with iced buckets containing Prosecco, Corona Beer, and jugs of Pimms. They allowed us to decorate the area both down and upstairs. The tables were laid out in lovely style upstairs, with two long legs laid out seating 16 on each. We had ordered a mixture of Pork, Beef, Lamb and Chicken all of which were outstanding, the Yorkshires were huge and perfectly made, the veggies cooked beautifully, the Cauliflower Cheese stunning. Desserts were similarly excellent, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Apple Crumble and Cheese Board. We cannot praise The Staff highly enough, they were friendly, professional and welcoming. All in all, The Plough did us proud on a landmark celebration, thankyou so much. One final note, Be Hungry, as you are very well fed at The Plough.

Lovely traditional pub. Wait time was short after we ordered, we were checked on just the right amount for fresh drinks, mains were a good size and well presented. Good fish and chips, batter not too thick. The gherkin starter and burgers were recommended by our attentive and polite wait staff. Would come here again.

I stopped in on a Thursday afternoon, hoping to have a pint and a meal in the beer garden. I was told that they only serve food to the beer garden on the weekends. So I took my pint down to the end of the very long beer garden and sat by the River Windrush and listened to the birds sing. When I went back in at 6:15, the place was packed! So I didn't bother ordering.

Popped in the the non busy plough on Saturday lunchtime with two work colleagues for a few drinks in the garden. Was met by a very flustered bar man who asked us to hurry up and order our drinks at the bar as we were looking what to have. The bar was empty at the time and there was only four people in the garden.!! Very rude man. Maybe he didn’t like the look of us in our work clothes. Anyway won’t be drinking or eating there again

Booked online for lunch, booking went though and 2 hours before we were due to eat had an email to say booking was cancelled! No explanation given, no apology. Called the pub to confirm this was the case, very rude “fully booked I’m afraid, bye” Terrible customer service, very disappointing.

I love this pub. Never disappoints. Great drink, amazing atmosphere everytime we go in, great mood music (chilled indie, love it), and the food is excellent also. We’ve been back twice in a fortnight for Sunday roasts it’s was so good first time round. Today we had starters also, the French onion soup on the specials but also the best halloumi fries I’ve ever had. Washed down with perfect Guiness and wine. Gorgeous spot, traditional old pub with more rustic features than you can shake a stick at but with a cool feel. I love this place. Beat pub in Witney? Probably

The last and best Sunday roast of 2023. I chose this pub for our New Year's Eve booking during a mini holiday with friends. We were all delighted with the atmosphere, friendly service and the totally delicious food! Lots of pubs get a roast wrong, but this was so good. Mine was veggie - caramelised cauliflower with a host of well cooked trimmings. The meat eaters were just as delighted. Huge Yorkshire Puddings. I'd recommend this pub without reservation and wish it was closer to home!

I have been to this pub fairly often but only for drinks and is usually really enjoyable. However, decided to come for lunch with family who are visiting. The menu was rubbish and stupidly priced but went with it anyway. Order the Halloumi fries. Received 6 fries with a dash of dipping sauce for £8. Bargain……….at £1.50 a chip They were so salty and inedible. Complain to the staff but they could not give sh1t and just looked at us blankly and shrugged his shoulder. Amazing customer service NOT! It would have been ok even if the person apologised. I did recommend friends and family to go here but will now advise against this.

Popped in with my Dad for a pint and a burger. I was asked how I wanted my Burger which I replied medium rare. It came out grey and well done. The bun was very stale and hadn’t been toasted because of that. The waitress apologised and that was it. We weren’t spoken to by a manager and the overall service was poor. (Was on a quiet Wednesday night) .the table of 6 behind us experienced the same issues. And Ended up sending theirs back to the kitchen only for it to come out overcooked again. I felt seconded hand embarrassment for the chef, having the same job as them.

Arrived at 7:30pm and taken to seat. Restaurant part is nice. Menu is very limited and were given the wrong menu to start with. Ordered quite quickly. Only ordered a main as having pudding. Ordered fish & chips c£16, 2 x burgers c£14 each and Steak c£24. Had drinks, ordered more drinks and still no food. The vodka and coke was poor, coke was flat and cheap vodka as no rate. Was over an hour wait for food and then told due to a nut allergy they have had to change oil in fryer. We waited some more and after a while more it came out. Burgers were small and chips were rock hard, burnt and hollow so inedible. The burgers had cheap cheese slice in middle. Not good. Steak for £24 was poor, no steak knife limited veg to some cabbage and chips like burger were inedible. Fish and burnt chips were poor. The lemon was best but on the plate. We had 3 more chips which were cooked come out but had finished everything on plate that was edible. Waitresses looked lost as whole restaurant was complaining. And head waitress who was helpful could see food was poor. We got some free drinks but ruined the night. God knows what other tables had, it came out in a narrow bone and was some brown liquid in it. Needs to go back to basics and cook good standard food. Will not be going back again. Really poor.

Down to the point of explaining service charge on large groups something bigger establishments coukd take note from. As someone who has worked in hospitality for many years I thought everything was spot on. The dining atmosphere casual but professional. Staff attentive and willing to have a laugh. Check backs regularly. Explained food took a while but we didn't even notice. Two old friends catching up. Couldn't have asked for a better place to do it. From where we were sat we could see the kitchen door and not one main course left the kitchen in the whole 75 minutes it took for us to receive our food!! When it eventually arrived there was no apology and the food was mediocre. We ordered puddings and these arrived after 20 minutes; the fruit crumble was good but the chocolate brownie was more like a chocolate biscuit - no soft centre just a crunchie, dry, baked biscuit. Waiting 75 minutes is totally unacceptable. Had the pub been full we’d have made allowances, but it wasn’t. Won’t be returning and certainly not recommending.

We have had multiple conversations with various members of staff, including the manager. Yet still have not received any form of answer regarding the use of their loom room. We have asked several times about booking it out, but have not been answered. This is not reflecting well for them and their ‘for the people of witney’ motto. As it seems they are just picking and choosing their ‘people’. We know that the room has recently been hired out for a function of the same style, so we aren’t asking for anything crazy. We would have just been happy with an answer, be it yes or no. But to be ignored is plain rude.

Husband and I called in early afternoon on Saturday for lunch. My 1st visit here and I was pleasantly surprised. Very old characterful pub with a great sunny garden. Busy without being hectic which was nice. Very friendly barmaid. We chose to share the pork belly & black pudding bites, whitebait, fish bites & hallumi fries which were all really good. Look forward to trying more from their menu

Been meaning to visit since the new owners took over a few months ago. What a funky little pub, gorgeous garden for sunny days and really family friendly. We chose to share a tapas style lunch, and everything was cooked fresh with lots of happy eating sounds from us both! We’ll definitely be back for dinner and half price wine Wednesday very soon!

Lovely old pub with a welcoming atmosphere. We were three generations, from 5 years to 75 years old, and all felt welcome. A Sunday lunch to salivate over! Great!!

Table booked for 3 pm . We were told the table was not ready no problem & we were seated at 3.10 . We had all pre ordered our food . The food arrived at 4.30 all the main courses in dribs & drabs . The waitress then said is everything ok we said we have had no veg . Most people’s lunch had then got cold in the 10 minutes we were waiting for the veg . Then a massive wait for the deserts . Once the bill arrived we were gobsmacked it includes a service charge . My step daughter went to pay the bill after we had all chipped in to be told sorry we don’t accept £50 notes they are legal tender are they not ? Luckily she’s is of strong character and told bar staff to take it or leave it . We left at 6.20 . 3 hours and 20 minutes for a two course meal that was roughly £21.50 a head . The food quality was excellent but as you can see by the review the timing was appalling.

Although still great and lovely place, it is quite noticeable that it has changed hands. Service is very nice and friendly, however the food menu options have changed considerably compared to what it was.

Had a great Sunday roast, the beef was perfectly cooked and good size portions. Jess and Henry are great hosts and I cannot wait to see what they do with this pub.

We went for dinner on a hot friday evening in June. The beer garden was in full swing and we sat quietly inside and enjoyed an excellent meal with very good service.

Stopped for lunch and I thought I was going to eat bangers and mash ! Was surprised by the extensive range on menu. Had the lamb - cooked to perfection . Ambience was excellent and it was quite for lunch which suited me fine. Bit pricey but worth it.

This place was nearby and I decided to check it out. The food was cooked to perfection. Everything was just so yummy. Make sure to save room for dessert, because that was the best part of the meal! The waiter was prompt and polite.

Popped into the plough for a quick dinner and was very impressed by the food. We ordered the breast of lamb with dauphinois, parsnip purée, a grilled cabbage and something else ?!? And fish cakes - both were absolutely delicious. Nicely presented, each element was very tasty. We could have eaten a whole plate of the cabbage that came with the lamb ! Delicious ! Price was well matched with the quality of the food. We would return. A lovely evening.

Popped into Mrs Bumbles for a spot of lunch, had a lovely sandwich and scotch egg. Sally told me all about the lovely local cheeses and we took a few home with us to try. Will be back when I'm back in Burford next time.

We visited for Sunday lunch mid August. Restaurant wasn’t by any means quiet but didn’t seem overly busy. From start to finish we received excellent service. Nothing was too much trouble. All questions were answered. Food was delicious really enjoyed every bit, others had puddings which were good too. Al members of staff were excellent and clearly enjoying their work. Beth was the one who served us mostly. She was attentive, kind and extremely helpful. All in all a great visit. Pricing is reasonable, portion sizes are good. Thank you we hope to visit again soon.

It isn’t that often I visit The Windmill, but I know the place well enough to know something is very different. There was a different aura in the air today. I didn’t recognise any of the staff members, and whilst they seemed like a large family, they were all unique and discombobulated in their own ways. I must start with some high praise - we were greeted very kindly by a lovely tall Irish lady with a beaming smile. Whilst very busy, she was also very accompanying and allowed us to buy a few of their home-made pint glasses (which she said she wasn’t supposed to do). Hats off to her for the hospitality. Sadly things took a slight turn for the worse whilst we were seated. It was only myself and my partner ordering some pub grub, however, after a brief conversation with the waiter it was quickly apparent that some kind of knowledge barrier prevented us from ordering exactly what we wanted. I have a suspicion this older gentleman was a distinguished chef from years gone by, because there wasn’t a single word I understood in his recommendations. Embarrassingly, we decided to opt for a few beers at the bar before ordering food instead. I must admit, that was a saving grace, for their homemade beer ‘Hawkstone’ was divine. The bartender was full of dry wit which added to a great atmosphere amongst the other guests. He has that familiar family friendly humour, like you wouldn’t be surprised to see him on TV! Not only was the beer exceptional in quality, the slight intoxication seemed to clear up some of the brain fog I was experiencing earlier, since the waiter suddenly seemed to made a lot more sense! So, we finally ordered our meal and enjoyed some local produce - again, simply divine. Despite the great tastes and atmosphere, I couldn’t help but feel the service was jeopardised by the initial language barrier. As such, I did ask the waiter if we could remove our service charge. I should add, this was a new waiter at the time, a dreary English chap who wasn’t impressed with our request. Whilst his thorough and detailed lecture around why a service charge holds such an important role in the overarching finance of the food industry, I tried to hold my ground and get this removed from the bill. It was only after we realised my partner had been asleep for 8 minutes that we sped things up, paid the bill with a 50/50 compromise on the service charge, and got ourselves out of there. All in all, I’d recommend the establishment because, despite some teething problems and unorthodox scenarios, the people are genuine and the food/drink is exceptional. Just keep an eye out for those tractors (given the rural area) - a young man with curly blonde hair had completely blocked my car in so we had to wait half an hour to leave!

Three phone conversations with the hotel management eventually confirmed that a Sunday roast could be obtained in the Terrace resturant. A table for 7 was booked and confirmed. On arrival the Terrace resturant was set up for a wedding ceremony. No other dining tables were apparent. On querying this with bar staff we were abruptly told "not our problem".Eventually found a deputy manager who set about laying up a dining table amongst the wedding guests ! Meanwhile we tried other local venues but couldn't get in within our timescale. We eventually sat for our anticipated Sunday lunch in a crowded golf club bar surrounded by a multitude of wedding guests. The food was obviously recently pulled out of the freezer, looked and tasted same ! HOPELESS !!We recommend training for front of house management in the art of coordination and courtesy for members of the bar staff.
