We visited this pub for a family birthday celebration and the staff could not have been any better. Our server was happy and very attentive. She smiled at every interaction and joined in the banter around the table. The food was fresh and excellent. The atmosphere of this pub is very welcoming. Cannot wait to visit again

Beautiful setting in the picturesque village of Sparsholt and beer garden overlooking the countryside. Traditional pub inside with attractive features and a friendly service. We both enjoyed the ribs and the kids bolognese was great too. Decent value and greet drinks selection. Well worth a meal

This pub is set in a lovely location, with gardens and a great atmosphere. Unfortunately everything else was poor. The food was expensive and the servings were small and were not very tasty (the falafel burger had halloumi, which we couldn’t find). The drinks were never replenished and our water arrived half way through our meal. This was a Thursday evening, the pub was not busy but the service was poor. Why is it so hard to make good pub food and be looked after?

It’s a real shame to see The Plough has changed so much. It’s a VERY different menu and type of food that made it so good for so many years. Very basic menu now. I guess that’s their choice, but unfortunately the quality was really poor too. I ordered their burger. If you’re going to put bacon in a burger you need to cook it… greasy fatty bacon is not nice. My wife ordered the Halumi and veg pie… it had about 4 tiny bits of Halumi and uncooked veg… clearly had come straight out of the freezer. I would have said something but no one once came over to ask if all ok with our meals. Still a lovely location for a pint in the garden on a sunny evening, but it’s not a food pub anymore.

Honestly I have never felt more sorry for some members of hospitalty staff. The manager who sweetly introduced herself to us as Imogen spoke to us kindly before turning round and bellowing orders at a group of staff no older then 19. I find this appalling behaviour that a grown woman can take out such anger on young adults SHAME ON HER on top of this she would repeatedly talk about other staff behind there back and at one point made a member of staff cry as I heard them in the toilets. I hope Imogen can gain a sense of humanity and I hope that the staff find a boss who appreciates them for the amount of work they put in. :)

Returned to the Plough Inn after many years for a special occasion and we found it as good as we remembered. Warm and welcoming environment, attentive and friendly service. Good beer and although the menu is not extensive it offers a reasonable range and the food we had was very good, albeit a little on the expensive side.

The pub ambience is country local, dark paintwork, but nice niknaks around the rooms and log fires (bit Smokey) The menu isn’t extensive, though they did provide a specials list, again not too extensive, but the food was great and at a sensible price point. The staff both behind the bar and at table were really friendly and helpful. We went straight to mains and though the bar and restaurant were a bit busy, our food came out in a reasonable time. Two of us had confit duck, with red cabbage (fell off the bone), one steak (perfectly cook)and I had the loveliest of steak and kidney puddings (with plenty of meat, and a proper suet pudding casing!) kale and mash, perfect. Puds were really nice, with a very large plum and apple crumble, ice cream, chocolate brownie, plus Churros and chocolate sauce, scrummy. And hey, they have a full menu for your dog, it’s True! And it did look appetising including dog safe ice creams (dog friendly in the bar) Drink pricing was reasonable. There is a 10% service fee pre added to the bill. Tonight was worth it.

January 20th 2024 booked for my wife’s Birthday for 9 people at 7.30pm had to change numbers a couple of times but they were very obliging about it. The Plough is a very character full rustic old pub with a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Imogen the Landlady was very helpful as we had a large round table in a cosy corner. The food was very good all parties were happy with what they had, the service was excellent although the food did take a little longer to arrive than we expected but was worth the wait. The evening was rounded of with a live small jazz band that played till about 9.30 ish. I wasn’t aware that there was a discretionary service charge but as my wife pointed out after it was written on the menu (my man eyes). Overall an excellent evening was had by all.

We recently used the Plough for a large event: venue, catering, additional facilities (AV, outside space, etc). Imogen and the entire team could not have been more helpful, more welcoming, or more completely professional. The communication and planning beforehand was easy and very flexible, and the organisation on the day was seamless. It was fabulous!

Terrible disappointment! For many years this was the go-to destination for lunch near Winchester. It was a foodie type pub, always busy and had a big and interesting menu written on chalkboards. Had a great atmosphere, varied beers, and place to take visiting friends or to go for family get-togethers. Never fine dining but always a good reliable place to go. Took daughter, kids, dog for impromptu birthday lunch today; 3 adults 2 kids.. First clue that it had changed was the car park was almost empty at 12.30 on Saturday. Over the 20 years we were regulars it was always full every lunchtime by 12.30. One had to book. It was great for kids in the summer as adults could eat outside in scenic surroundings and kids use the good play area. Second clue was the absence of the two massive chalkboards. Turns out that there is now a small menu of bog standard pub food which turns out to be poorly executed. The chips seemed crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, but no-one could finish them in the end; they were weird and seemed to be twice cooked from a freezer pack. The batter on the fish was like deep-fried cardboard. Too solid and stodgy. We all fished out the fish!! The burger was OK however. There are other pubs in the area doing bog-standard pub food where at least the fish and chips are reliable. Good points (the food deserved 1 star but upped it to 2 due to these): The staff are pleasant and the service good. But they were hardly rushed off their feet!! They are certainly very dog-friendly with a doggy menu which our hound did not try, but she did get a couple of treats from the waitress which was a nice touch. The kids play area is still good, the pub itself is lovely, and the location would still be good in the summer to eat outside. However, if you have been there in the past and loved it, I wouldn't bother to return as the food is a shadow of what it was and all is utterly changed. Sadly we won't be going back.

Lovely country location, with traditional decor which suits the old building. We appreciated the fire on a cold November night. The menu was limited, but did include fish and vegetarian options. I was delighted to see twice baked cheese soufflé on the menu, but it was almost inedible. A stodgy cheesy pudding the size of a tennis ball, which in no way resembled a soufflé! Our main courses ( one veggie burger, one beef burger) were ok but the decaf coffee was such a bitter blend I could not drink it. The wines were expensive. Overall, a disappointing experience.

We had a family birthday to celebrate. We were frequent visitors to the Plough till it changed hands after many years. We did try the new landlord but it was a shadow of its former self. It has changed landlord again so we thought we would try it. The staff were polite, friendly and efficient. My roast dinner arrived in a pile with a good deal of the plate empty. I was expecting additional veggies etc might be arriving, but no. My roast lamb was extremely difficult to cut and the roast potatoes were like cardboard. Nice place poor quality roast for £20.

This is still a lovely country pub to sit in, and the service was good and friendly when we were there. Without this, I would only have given 3 stars. It used to be noted for its excellent food. They are now part of The Little Pub Group and the food has become much less remarkable, which is disappointing. I had braised shoulder of lamb which was acceptable but the meat was bland and a bit fatty (long slow cooking would have dispensed with the fat) - an excellent potato dauphinoise but a very bland red cabbage. My friend had a butternut squash and chickpea curry (against my advice - pub curries are notoriously bland and this one was). She asked if there was lemon grass in it (which she doesn't like) and was told NO. When it arrived she asked if there were chutneys to go with it and was told no, it's Thai Style. Well, of course there would be lemon grass in it, unless the chef was totally ignorant, and sure enough there was. She struggled to eat it but was too polite to say anything. I really hope they can raise the food a bit - it's such a nice pub with a lovely ambience and I really want it to succeed,

This would have been 2*s but the manager managed to raise it to three stars at the end with her interaction with us. In short the pub is beautiful and would be a great place for a drink but sadly the food was completely under seasoned and very disappointing especially for the cost of the food - which was on the high side. When we mentioned the lack of taste to the waitress she appeared to handle it really well by saying how important it was to get feedback and she would pass it on. We were therefore expecting the manager to come over and have a conversation with us but sadly that never happened. The issue was never mentioned again and when the bill came it was for the full amount. When we were leaving we mentioned our disappointment to the manager who was very apologetic as this was the first she had heard of our issues (the waitress had not passed the message on). She kindly offered a refund for the mains but this was not what we had been after - all we wanted was an acknowledgment that things had not gone as planned. It looks like the Sunday roast is brilliant and we might give that a go but don’t bother with the main menu.

What a lovely place! Great food and drinks plus the setting is great too. What really stood out were the friendly staff who looked after us seemingly effortlessly despite being super busy.

Beautiful gardens, and friendly staff. Would advise not to have the chicken & bacon caesar salad as a main meal. Portion size extremely small, very disappointing. We did question whether we had been given a chicken & bacon caesar starter! If we didn't have guests...

Had a wonderful meal here with my family. Very good service with knowledgeable and welcoming staff, and great food from local produce. Dog friendly as well which is a real win for post dog walks at nearby Farley Mount. Will be returning for sure.

Came here without pre-booking for Sunday lunch, and was pleased to find staff were able to fit us in.Sunday roast was plentiful and tasty (huge Yorkshire puds!), and staff were attentive, despite a steady stream of diners throughout our stay.Lovely venue with lots of countryside walking available nearby. Well worth a visit!

Friendly team, every effort was positive, but don’t think yesterday was their day. The fire was filling the room with smoke rather than warmth, but it was like the elephant in the room as no-one mentioned or apologised. Then the food... I wonder whether there is too much option, with various starters, mains and specials on top of the traditional roasts. The result was beef that was tough and over done (when mentioned quietly on plate collection there seemed only to be acceptance of the fact, with no gesture to acknowledge), roast chicken in name only, the individual breasts may have been roasted, but not as a whole chicken and potatoes that were meh! For the cost, the end result was average at best this time I’m afraid.

First time visit but I had looked at the menu online and was encouraged by the menu choices. Nice pub, friendly staff, lovely location. Unfortunately, the food didn't meet my expectations. Short rib of beef was meltingly tender but couldn't taste any parmesan in the mustard/parmesan mash and the sauce was nice but bland and it ended up being a rather soggy mashy plate. Rhubarb gin cheesecake didn't taste of anything. Swapped dessert with friend as she didn't like her baked chocolate mousse and I agreed, it wasn't great. Prices not that cheap so not particularly happy.

We've been here a few times for Sunday lunch after a walk and have had a good experience each time. The pub itself is warm and cosy with open fires and the staff are friendly and helpful, especially the couple who manage it, Anna and Matt who remembered us from previous visits. We found the food and wine really good and with good choice for all the family. It has always been busy when we've been in with a good atmosphere. Unlike some busy pubs it is still run efficiently with no over-long waits for food. Make sure you book ahead as it gets booked up for Sunday lunch weeks in advance.

Love this place. So cosy and welcoming, especially after the refurb it recently went through. My daughter particularly loves it as she is pescatarian and they have plenty of fish options on the menu. I feel like I keep visiting a different eatery as there are very conflicting reviews. We have always been very well looked after, with friendly service and tasty, generously proportioned meals. The wine list has something for everyone on it- we had the organic Pinot Noir which was absolutely delicious, in fact so good, we had two bottles! Keep doing what you’re doing Plough team!

We booked Sunday lunch with my sister and brother in law, we wanted to try the Chestnut Horse with the intention to book for Christmas. The starters were lovely but not to be said for the main course, my sister and I had the roast beef, the beef was cut thickly and the whole plate full was verging on cold, my sister order extra cauliflower cheese which arrived towards the end of her meal. We ordered puddings, my sisters came first, ice cream, and ours arrived half an hour later and was not fully as we ordered. The staff were very pleasant and apologetic. Such a shame for a lovely country pub.
