The Plough in Scarborough

Stayed in the pub in a lovely double room. The bathroom was beautifully furnished with molton brown toiletries, and in the bedroom there was a fridge and a honesty box. We ate in the restaurant. Service was fabulous and the food was lovely. I had the fish stew. There is a great cocktail menu but it was a work night! Next morning the night porter couldn’t have been more helpful as we arrived a bit earlier than our scheduled 8am breakfast and offered to make us a coffee. 8am is a bit late for a business breakfast but….it was excellent and there was plenty of choice. Highly recommend everything about this place and it’s priced comparably to the chain hotel nearby.

Most underwhelmed. Despite ordering one meal with mash and one without, both came with mash. So had to wait while it was rectified. The pork, gravy, mash and Yorkshire pud were nice. The Roasts were like cardboard, the veg were freshly micro-waved from frozen and vile. Not at all value for money.

Was a all round good night food was amazing will and greace was exceptional good at service and will at front of house will defo be going back here over and over

Just a one night stay in one of the cottages. Not sure why they are called cottages as they definately are not cottages. Saying that we had a fantastic stay, the " cottages" are refurbished to the highest standard with a very impressive interior. Food, drink and service in the Plough were also exceptional. Highly Recommend.

Attended to celebrate a birthday. Had fantastic service from Mckenzie. Food was all excellent, we started with Mussels, pork croquettes and squid to begin. Then for our main courses had beef short rib, pork belly, steak and chicken, leek and mushroom pie. Everything was perfect. We chose from the incredible list of cocktails to start, and excellent wine from the comprehensive list with our meal. We've been before and we'll definitely be back.

First class experience from start to finish .. easy to book ..lovely inside .. comfortable and traditional looking .. staff were all lovely and very efficient.. food was brought out in reasonable time .. drinks were good quality and food looked smelled and tasted fabulous.. very happy to recommend to anyone .

Great food, excellent service but why oh why do they feel loud pounding base music is necessary over lunch? Looking at the average age of the clientele one felt the music was there for the benefit of the young serving staff than creating a comfortable dining experience.

I have just made my second visit, and once again it was a thoroughly satisfying experience. From start to finish eating at the Plough was simply first class. The straightforward online booking system made it very easy to reserve a table, and we received a warm welcome from the friendly and efficient staff who were attentive without being intrusive. The menu was unfussy, with sufficient choices to suit most tastes although not extensive. The service was excellent, and the quality of the food was first-class, both in flavour and presentation - cooked to perfection. Although not cheap the bill was very reasonable, particularly considering the standard of the fare. It is hard to find fault with any aspect of this establishment, and I will certainly be returning at the earliest opportunity.

On holiday and called in at the Plough ‘on spec’ - and what a find. I could not fault it on any point - the food, service, quality and atmosphere all 5 star. Great wine list as well - what’s not to like?

We had a fabulous meal at The Plough, Saturday 13th. Service was excellent, food delicious. Wish we lived nearer. We will return when next in Scarborough.

The Plough cannot be recommended too highly. For atmosphere, surroundings, service, choice, and above all quality of food it is absolutely first-class. Excellent value for money.

First time eating here and my last has the Sunday roast was nice but for £22 was not worth the price tag , then decided to have a sweet any again the portion was so small for what your paying and that cost £14 . The food is nice but portion size and what you pay it’s really not worth it , if I any thinking about eating here I would look elsewhere better value for money .

We were staying in a cottage in Scalby so decided to eat here one evening. What an amazing place! Couldn’t fault the mussels starter and the delicious stone bass in a creamy sauce from the specials board. Was so enticing forgot to take a picture but the main course was beautifully presented. Will is the perfect host and makes sure that all of his customers are having the best experience and the service runs like a well oiled machine. Enjoyed so much we went back for a second time - this time went for the fish and chips. Again, totally on point with the freshest of fish in the lightest of batters and just the right amount of chips. If you are in the area please go here, you won’t be disappointed and we will certainly be back.

A big thank you to the staff at the Plough, couldn't do enough for us and the room was amzing just like the breakfast. My Daughter had a long drive up from Kent and didnt arrive until 3 in the morning - Dotty was top notch and sorted everything and even arranged for her too have breaky in the room as she slep in and was in a running late panic (as usual). Ohh, and this little fella got back to his rightfull owner (who was older than you might think), again top work.

We were staying in York and meeting with some friends from Newcastle so chose a nearby location out of the blue. Great choice, this was one of the best roasts I've ever had (and I am pretty fussy!). We all went for the mixed meat roasts and it was delicious. The pub was quaint and very busy. We'd booked for 1.15 on a Sunday and struggled to park as there is no car park so I recommend booking outside of the busiest times or be prepared to walk (we couldn't as husband is disabled so had little choice but got lucky with a space). The pub is obviously very popular and we weren't seated until nearly 2pm. Didn't bother us as we were happy taking time at the bar catching up with friends, but that might not suit everyone on a timetable.

Visited for a meal and was not disappointed, the quality and presentation was excellent, at good value. Service was excellent and the ambience v good, at Xmas time this provided a warm and good atmosphere. Recommend a visit.

Absolutely stunning restaurant, the food was delicious cooked to perfection. The waiter, Chris, was fabulous, looked after us so well! Extremely clean would highly recommend coming here whether it be date night or family gathering.

We took visiting family here last night and they loved it. Staff so welcoming and knowledgable. It was a busy Saturday night but staff were really attentive and service was quick. In need of an update looking jaded.The room was very small and claustrophobic. The bed was very uncomfortable despite having two mattress toppers on..The shower was quirky but a bit small especially as my husband is 6’3

What a find! We’d been recommended this dog friendly pub and checked it out last night. Food was stunning. Not cheap (Fillet steak £40) but again you get what you pay for. We would rather pay for quality food than have piled high average food. Lovely charcuterie board for starters and then 2 steaks. Lovely atmosphere and we will definitely be visiting again soon.

Had evening meal which was delicious. Fish & chips with a side of curry sauce. My wife had giant prawns with a side salad. Nice atmosphere and classy cosy decor.

We stayed in sunbeam cottage on Mother’s Day & we were stunned just how wonderful this property was . It exceeded all our expectations . It warm , cosy , spotless & luxurious. I can’t recommend this cottage enough & will defiantly be staying here again. We also booked Sunday dinner in the plough , the food was delicious & the staff were all lovely , friendly & couldn’t do enough for us .

We booked a table for 7 of us on Tuesday evening at 5.30. The main courses were very nice and served promptly, 4 of the Pie specials, beautifully presented, Mussels, a burger and some Tapas plates. The problem came when we ordered desserts. The order was placed at 7pm, 2 sticky toffee pudding, a parfait and a posset. After 30 mins we asked how long the desserts were going to be, we were told they were being prepared. After 45 minutes we waved for someone to come over and asked again how long the desserts were going to be. The man who seemed to be in charge was quite dismissive despite the fact that we told him the best part of an hour was unacceptable to wait for them. He said he would stake his reputation on the fact that they would be out in 3 minutes. They did come out quite quickly after that, however they were not freshly prepared. The sticky toffee pudding is clearly a tray bake that is portioned and microwaved as it was not a soft sponge but actually quite hard, the parfait had been taken out of a mould and decorated with sorbet and some berries and the posset was set in a glass bowl and decorated with cherries, hardly nearly an hours worth of preparation to get out 4 desserts! The staff were friendly but very young, they could not answer questions about what went into some of the cocktails or some of the menu items and had to go off and ask which lengthened the whole ordering process. At no point when we were waiting for dessert did anyone come and apologise for the wait, or even to make an excuse that they had other large tables to serve and we might have to wait. Some serious staff training needs to be given. A discount on the bill was given on the desserts at the end by way of apology but a very special personal evening with close friends was spoilt by the poor service we received.

1st time visit. I must day I was impressed. The staff were great the hotel room was lovely. The menu was beautiful. Definitely visit again 👍

7 of us were staying in a cottage over the road. We had booked for 6.30pm and the place was busy and buzzing when we arrived. We ordered from across the menu but the food was a bit of a mixed bag. My fish , chips , mushy peas and curry source was as good as I’ve ever had . My wife throughly enjoyed her duck and my son in law was happy with his sirloin steak. The only slight negative was the two who had the vegetarian ravioli. What they said was that the whole didn’t quite live up to the parts. They couldn’t put their finger on it but the dish didn’t quite work. Between us we had quite a few cocktails which were ok but not top notch. Finally all the staff were brilliant.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas. Warm welcome on entering The Plough. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent. My only gripe is the price of the ice cream ( which I would have ordered) I did check with the waiter that it was the same as the rest of the deserts £8 for 2 scoops! I know the cost of everything has gone up but really. If I wanted chocolate sauce an extra £1.50 ! Wow.

We stopped off and, as it was warm and cosy, we decided to have a drink and some food. We feel it’s gone downhill since the last time. I was given a spoon that had clearly been used by someone else as in it had food on it, that had been smeared onto it, in the way it can do when eating. How can the processes break down so badly, and in this time of Covid, that a dirty spoon ends up in the clean cutlery. To be clear it had not seen through the dishwasher. I tried the posset which was like set sweetened condensed milk, too sickly and I couldn’t manage it. The meat course was quite good if a little over done but the real problem was my son found a foreign object in his main. We left in a hurry but I wished I’d complained. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us however.

I was a little concerned as it was a very cold night and I don't deal with it very well, but it was warm and cosy, the Christmas decorations were so pretty. The atmosphere was good, the lighting was perfect. I've dined here before but always in the summer months. The food was as good as ever, the service spot on and not intrusive, it was friendly and warm. I can't fault this lovely gem of a place

Once again this hotel/inn is totally awesome. Beautiful place. Rooms are immaculate, the food is 100% ‘second to none’, great service, really friendly people. My highest recommendation!!!

Seriously the best Sunday lunch we've ever had out. Lovely friendly welcoming atmosphere from the brilliant young and smiley barstaff to the manager. It's definitely worth a revisit soon even though we live 2 hours away! Maybe an overnight next time

Went for a Sunday lunch here whilst on holiday in Scalby - we pre ordered as were quite a large group. The food was amazing - the best Sunday dinner I've had in a long time, the service staff were always keen to make sure we had our drinks filled up. Left very happy ( and a little tipsy ) Definitely be back next time we are in the area

Food amazing service great. Beef and chorizo pie probably best pie I've ever had. Came for my nieces birthday meal. All the food was lovely and well presented. Would recommend.

The plough is one of our favourite places to stay, the rooms are lovely for an overnight stay. We love the food and it is always exceptional, the menu and specials board have a good variety. Staff are friendly and helpful, pay the plough a visit and you will not be disappointed!

We are on holiday in Scarborough and booked a Sunday roast at this pub! Food was amazing, as was the service and lovely selection of wine!! It was so good that we came back a couple of days later for another meal. As before cannot fault anything. Highly recommend. Also very accommodating with our little one in the pram.

Food excellent in a great venue with friendly staff. A shame that a few unnecessary niggles knocked one star off a perfect score. We were offered a quieter table in the terrace area, which was lovely but unfortunately means you tend to get forgotten. We were not told about the specials. We were there on a Sunday lunchtime and the board only showed specials for the evening but after ordering we overheard the neighbouring table being given a choice of specials which we would have chosen from rather than the set menu we were provided with. The roast beef was delicious but impossible to cut with the knife provided. Eventually I went inside the pub to ask for a steak knife. Please make sure you heed this feedback. A sharp knife for roast meat makes all the difference!! No table check back. No one cleared the plates for ages. No one came to take the pudding order, we had to go back inside.

We visited twice recently in three days in August 23. On both occasions I would say the food was really nice but the service, particularly on the Sunday when we visited was not overly great especially for the premium prices you are being charged. We were left on both visits waiting to ask for more drinks and the desert menu and again on both occasions we’ve had to get up and leave to pay the bill rather than being given the bill and to cap it all off we were charged 20 more than our bill that we spotted only as we were about to leave. For me it seems the more inexperienced members of staff weren’t always so aware of what good service should look like particularly more galling when we were about to leave on the Sunday 2 members of staff were stood in front of the bar with an empty rest of the restaurant/pub. As mentioned the food was nice and the honey roast ham a particular highlight as was the sticky toffee pudding but as you can tell the poor service was the last memory which is a shame.

Went on the first night of the new menu and every one of my party enjoyed their meal. Especially recommend the lamb and the Korean style short rib. Each and every we visit we are never disappointed with our choice from the menu at The Plough, but this has to be one of the best meals we’ve ever had. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff are very attentive. Well done.
