We took visiting family here last night and they loved it. Staff so welcoming and knowledgable. It was a busy Saturday night but staff were really attentive and service was quick. We had 3 fish and chips and one pork belly. All were amazing and all empty plates. We had a really lovely night thank you

What a find! We’d been recommended this dog friendly pub and checked it out last night. Food was stunning. Not cheap (Fillet steak £40) but again you get what you pay for. We would rather pay for quality food than have piled high average food. Lovely charcuterie board for starters and then 2 steaks. Lovely atmosphere and we will definitely be visiting again soon.

We booked a table for 7 of us on Tuesday evening at 5.30. The main courses were very nice and served promptly, 4 of the Pie specials, beautifully presented, Mussels, a burger and some Tapas plates. The problem came when we ordered desserts. The order was placed at 7pm, 2 sticky toffee pudding, a parfait and a posset. After 30 mins we asked how long the desserts were going to be, we were told they were being prepared. After 45 minutes we waved for someone to come over and asked again how long the desserts were going to be. The man who seemed to be in charge was quite dismissive despite the fact that we told him the best part of an hour was unacceptable to wait for them. He said he would stake his reputation on the fact that they would be out in 3 minutes. They did come out quite quickly after that, however they were not freshly prepared. The sticky toffee pudding is clearly a tray bake that is portioned and microwaved as it was not a soft sponge but actually quite hard, the parfait had been taken out of a mould and decorated with sorbet and some berries and the posset was set in a glass bowl and decorated with cherries, hardly nearly an hours worth of preparation to get out 4 desserts! The staff were friendly but very young, they could not answer questions about what went into some of the cocktails or some of the menu items and had to go off and ask which lengthened the whole ordering process. At no point when we were waiting for dessert did anyone come and apologise for the wait, or even to make an excuse that they had other large tables to serve and we might have to wait. Some serious staff training needs to be given. A discount on the bill was given on the desserts at the end by way of apology but a very special personal evening with close friends was spoilt by the poor service we received.

7 of us were staying in a cottage over the road. We had booked for 6.30pm and the place was busy and buzzing when we arrived. We ordered from across the menu but the food was a bit of a mixed bag. My fish , chips , mushy peas and curry source was as good as I’ve ever had . My wife throughly enjoyed her duck and my son in law was happy with his sirloin steak. The only slight negative was the two who had the vegetarian ravioli. What they said was that the whole didn’t quite live up to the parts. They couldn’t put their finger on it but the dish didn’t quite work. Between us we had quite a few cocktails which were ok but not top notch. Finally all the staff were brilliant.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas. Warm welcome on entering The Plough. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent. My only gripe is the price of the ice cream ( which I would have ordered) I did check with the waiter that it was the same as the rest of the deserts £8 for 2 scoops! I know the cost of everything has gone up but really. If I wanted chocolate sauce an extra £1.50 ! Wow.

We stopped off and, as it was warm and cosy, we decided to have a drink and some food. We feel it’s gone downhill since the last time. I was given a spoon that had clearly been used by someone else as in it had food on it, that had been smeared onto it, in the way it can do when eating. How can the processes break down so badly, and in this time of Covid, that a dirty spoon ends up in the clean cutlery. To be clear it had not seen through the dishwasher. I tried the posset which was like set sweetened condensed milk, too sickly and I couldn’t manage it. The meat course was quite good if a little over done but the real problem was my son found a foreign object in his main. We left in a hurry but I wished I’d complained. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us however.

Food excellent in a great venue with friendly staff. A shame that a few unnecessary niggles knocked one star off a perfect score. We were offered a quieter table in the terrace area, which was lovely but unfortunately means you tend to get forgotten. We were not told about the specials. We were there on a Sunday lunchtime and the board only showed specials for the evening but after ordering we overheard the neighbouring table being given a choice of specials which we would have chosen from rather than the set menu we were provided with. The roast beef was delicious but impossible to cut with the knife provided. Eventually I went inside the pub to ask for a steak knife. Please make sure you heed this feedback. A sharp knife for roast meat makes all the difference!! No table check back. No one cleared the plates for ages. No one came to take the pudding order, we had to go back inside.

We visited twice recently in three days in August 23. On both occasions I would say the food was really nice but the service, particularly on the Sunday when we visited was not overly great especially for the premium prices you are being charged. We were left on both visits waiting to ask for more drinks and the desert menu and again on both occasions we’ve had to get up and leave to pay the bill rather than being given the bill and to cap it all off we were charged 20 more than our bill that we spotted only as we were about to leave. For me it seems the more inexperienced members of staff weren’t always so aware of what good service should look like particularly more galling when we were about to leave on the Sunday 2 members of staff were stood in front of the bar with an empty rest of the restaurant/pub. As mentioned the food was nice and the honey roast ham a particular highlight as was the sticky toffee pudding but as you can tell the poor service was the last memory which is a shame.

Apart from this parking distraction, this place is excellent. The food is only to be described as FABULOUS ! and is top drawer in every way...... Just one thing of note.... we bought a bottle of champagne to celebrate being able to eat in a restaurant once more. For some reason, all of the staff including the front of house did not come near to pour the bubbly into the lovely flutes. It wasn’t that they were overly busy either. Quite bizarre we thought. So we sorted it ourselves in the end. Strange really but not life or death. They also do accommodation and we would consider staying there definitely.

Had a weekend in Scarborough and decided to book the plough for our second nights stay ,we arrived a little early and told our room was going to be ready for 3pm which is the correct check in time any way so decided to have a drink on the front of the pub which was lovely and quiet ,the location is great as your in a little village with not much through traffic ,on being told our room was ready we was taken up to room 7 which is on the 3rd floor ,on entering the room to our surprise the room was compact as it felt like it was a loft space there was probably 2ft max down the sides of a double bed ,low ceilings and the en-suite was the same with eived ceilings,we was really disappointed with the room as it was £190 and thought that it would have been more spacious for that type of money ,knowing this was the last room when I booked I knew complaining would have gotten me no where .When I booked there was an option to pick a quiet room which I did but never got this as was awakened at 1.00 am from the people outside the pub singing and guests shouting to be let in ,I’m all for having a good time but feel this needs addressing and guests informed when checking in to that room that it’s on the front of the pub ,small and noisey at night time ,we dined in the restaurant and can’t fault the food but the ambiance in the bar area were we was allocated our table is more for drinking than dining .Breakfast came and was sent back as all the food on the plate was cold especially the beans that felt like they’d just been taken out of the fridge ,the waitress took my breakfast back and a fresh hot cooked breakfast was brought out 10 mins later which to be honest was average, bacon hard as well as poached egg but sausage beautiful,I would stop here again as the staff were fantastic and we had a great afternoon at the nags head which is 100 yards up the road listening to local folk music which was different, but would keep these issues in mind when booking a room Thanks Mr n Mrs C

I would definitely stay her again, but NOT in room 5, it's in the eve's of the building, beautifully decorated, and first impressions are wow! But after hitting your head on the beams and no window to look out of or open it's 100% overpriced, claustrophobic nightmare!! Luckily it had a comfy bed, it's saving grace. Seeing one of the other rooms, I would just ask not to be put in room 5, as the other rooms look beautifully appointed. The inn is immaculately clean, and evening meals are superb, and good value. Breakfast is basic, little choice and we waited 45mins for a continental and a "yorkshire breakfast" in the end I had to knock on the kitchen door, and ask if they were chasing the hens? All that said the staff were great, some needed a little training, but a lovely stay, and next time we will avoid room 5

Stayed in their self-catering Sunbeam Cottage, just around the corner from the Plough. The 2 bed cottage is amazing - beautifully decorated, fantastically equipped and scrupulously clean. We were lucky with the weather and whiled away a really pleasant hour in the small but lovely front garden with a bottle of Prosecco for company. Dinner on each night was taken at the Plough, where the food is very high quality, the beer excellent (do try the pale Black Sheep - fabulous!) and the service top-rate - all the staff we met were professional, efficient and above all friendly. we desperately tried to extend our stay, but clearly other fokks also know how brilliant this place is, so we had to leave at our allotted time. All-in-all, this is probably one of the best short stays we have had in many a year. Cannot recommend highly enough!

We booked this restaurant for a Fathers Day treat and were welcomed by blank stares from the staff who didn’t seem to recognise our booking! As a table for 5 we were squeezed into a tiny corner until a member of staff produced another table! We ordered our meal and then to our horror a dog the size of a small horse arrived at the table next to us! It stunk! It sat on the seats, had its paws on the table and was being fed from the table! More dogs arrived and by the time we finished our meal there were 5 dogs in the restaurant. I recognise that this is a country pub/restaurant and get a lot of custom as a dog friendly restaurant, but this was over the top! I had to go and sit outside to get away from the stench of the dog/horse. I expressed my concerns to three members of the staff on the way out and received the same blank stares that we were welcomed with. The food was OK

The Plough is a lovely old pub in the heart of the attractive village of Scalby. It is conveniently located for visits to nearby Scarborough and the North York Moors National Park. A three night stay in mid-June 2021 proved a perfect tonic after the COVID lockdown. The accommodation was excellent, our room (no. 1) being spacious, nicely furnished and comfortable. The food was absolutely superb. Great credit and thanks to the chef and his team for their fantastic work and a big ‘thank you’ to Lucy and her friendly, efficient staff for making us feel so very welcome throughout our short break. The Plough is a great place to stay and definitely on the list for a return visit. Highly recommended.

Situated in a beautiful residential area, with three pubs, the parking is not that easy close by but manageable when we went there.First impressions on arrival were not overwhelming and we felt it was a bit tired and the waiter, through absolutely no fault of his own, was difficult for me to understand through his mask. However, have to say the service was very efficient and prompt. The food was AMAZING!! You have on offer a choice of starters or “tapas” and we went for three of these to share - being smoked salmon, crab pot and burrata. They were sensational and plenty big enough. The pickles were mild and magnificent and the use of cucumber and dill throughout the courses inspired! We both chose, from the specials, for mains the Halibut with mussels, pickled veg, samphire and hazelnuts (we were asked about allergies when we ordered) and again it was a good size piece and the whole plate magnificent. We LOVED the food!! We came to Scarborough with mixed feelings but, apart from the South Beach area, left with extraordinary memories of great food, the moors that surround it, some very pleasant and quiet beaches close by and some beautiful houses and residential areas.

Had our first Sunday lunch takeaway from The Plough today. It was superb. Meat and veg in separate containers, good amounts. Will certainly order again. It will be good to go again when it reopens.

We had a three course meal for two with bottle of wine included to heat and enjoy at home this evening. We collected in the afternoon. The quality was superb. We enjoyed every morsel. A very interesting and unusual menu and not something we would have cooked at home for ourselves. Well done to the chef as the food quality did not deteriorate on heating. A great effort at a really reasonable price.
