First visit. First impression delightful location. Extremely poor / processed quality food (not uncommon with many cafes/tea shops). Very small slice of cake and eclair with equally small dollop ice cream, cup of tea and mug coffee cost £12.70. As with the venue people seem nice. Accept dogs (which is great). Suggest review and improve quality of food and presentation. Leaving a used cigarette ashtray on table not indicative of professional service.

Great coffee, lovely new summer menu with real tasty treats on offer. Small but very friendly and if you have not tried their themed food evenings you need to book. Greek nights, French nights and more to come during the next few months. I would recommend this lovely cozy haven away from the crowds. Licenced as well which is always a bonus.

Looking for a place to sit and have a coffee in nice surroundings, we chanced on this little place, off the main road. You can miss it, but I'm so glad we decided to try it as we were more than nicely surprised. It's only small, but very pleasant inside, nice and cosy. They also do food, and when we read the menu, decided to eat there as well. We were not disappointed. My husband had the chilli nachos (his favourite) and I opted for mushroom, mozzarella and basil quiche, with side salad. The quiche was the best I've ever had, light and delicious. It was very nicely presented on a platter, with a little salad which even had some pomegranate sees scattered in (a nice touch) and a separate serving of coleslaw and potato salad. It was lovely and very much enjoyed. Found the staff there to be very welcoming and friendly. Overall, a very positive experience and we will definitely be back many more times. Our new favourite place to date...

We went in here about 11.45 in the morning, after having read all these wonderful reviews. We were the only people in there for a good 20 minutes, apart from (I assume) the owners and their little girl who seemed to find us an interesting spectacle to stare at! I'm afraid to say we didn't feel particularly welcome, we really wanted someone else to come in, but then friends of the owners did, which didn't really help us feel any at ease! I'm a vegetarian, and there wasn't a great deal of choice, so I asked for the bacon to be left off the bacon brie and cranberry panini which was done without a fuss - but with the price left unchanged. The food took a while, considering it was just a panini and a sandwich and we were the only ones there at this point, but the food was decent. My husband had a ham and mustard sandwich; wafer thin ham (a strange choice perhaps when you could get amazing ham from the butchers a few doors away?!) and the bread was fresh if just from a standard sliced loaf. The butter and mustard outweighed the taste of the ham. The panini was good, with plenty of cranberry balancing out the cheese! The salad and coleslaw were tasty and nice and fresh, but the crisps were perhaps opened the day before?! The packets of sugar hadn't been filled on our table, so we got some from another table, without comment from the owners. The milk in the pot was just enough for my husband's mug of tea, but if you like it milky you would have needed to ask for more! We left with appetites sated, but wouldn't rush back. With some changes it could be wonderful.

Made very welcome on our visit and enjoyed an excellent freshly made generous coffee. The interior is very well set out and extremely relaxing with a pleasant atmosphere. You could linger in here with your coffee and a book and feel quite at home. Loved the handcrafted items available for sale which was a nice touch. Well worth a visit and will certainly be going again if in Whitby. Helen and Elaine

My mum and I had lunch here as being local and knew it had changed hands we decided to give it a go. We both asked for the prawn and avocado sandwiches but were disappointed as we were told there wasn't any prawns on that day. Nevertheless what we ordered was very tasty and the presentation was lovely. The only down side was that there was only us and one other table in and yet the service was very slow. I gather that the new owners have only been in 3 months so hopefully the service will improve. That it the only thing letting it down. Otherwise lovely! Would go again.

Freshly prepared food to order. Not a frozen, defrosted or microwaved morsel in sight. Great food is worth the wait. My LO had a cheese sandwich meal which included fresh apple juice and a flap jack. The sandwiches were buttered perfectly all over the bread not just along the cut line like a lot of cafes. Freshly grated cheese was used not a synthetic slice like my LO has been served elsewhere. The coffee was lovely served with complimentary lotus biscuits. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and the cafe had a warm relaxing atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again. Thank you for making my first trip to Whitby so rememberable.

We found this cafe when wandering the backstreets of Whitby and what a little gem!Not cheap, but the food is homemade and delicious. I had crab and leek quiche, served with a really fresh salad. My wife had cake (can't remember what type, but she recalls how good it was). This was served with tea, in quite quaint old China, that was somewhat past its sell by, but none the less charming. Service was somewhat chaotic, but did not spoil the visit. We will definitely visit again.

The decor is french and the menu comprises crepes with lovely fillings beautifully presented and served with fresh herbs. The goatscheese and mushroom special was wonderful. As a family of 4 with a dog in tow, we really wanted to sit down for a light lunch in a nice quiet location. Whitby on a sunny Saturday was heaving with shoppers, but up a quiet alleyway I spotted a little table and 4 chairs in a courtyard. We ambled up and found the delightful "Courtyard Cafe". The owners were very friendly and welcoming and we had a lovely lunch of toasties and panini's served with generous side salads (home grown tomatoes were delicious !) and portions of crisps. Large hot drinks and hot chocolate topped with cream and marshmallows etc for the kids. A nice selection of reading material was available as well as some colouring books and crayons for younger customers. A hidden gem offering some peace and quiet - you won't be disappointed !

We had a number of cafe experiences in Whitby based on Trip Advisor reviews over the few days we were there and this topped our list. The staff were the friendliest we encountered even remembering the kids names for our 2nd visit and offering honest advice on what we could do in the rain. I was unsure about trying this place but was overruled by the family, and glad I was. We all had something different for breakfast, but the quality was fantastic, the sausages in particular deserve a special mention. One of the staff came to talk to us before we left and was telling our daughter how they made an 'egg muffin' that she'd eaten, so that she could try the recipe at home. It's tucked away and not a huge place, but worth seeking out for good food and good, friendly service.

I had been wanting to visit this cafe for a while and my partner and I decided to go for my birthday lunch. There was plenty of choice for a lunchtime menu. we both ordered a panini which came with crisps and salad, there was plenty of it, for a reasonable price of £4.95. We had 3 coffees and a lemonade between us along side two of the delicious cakes (one of which we took home as we were too full!) all for just under £20. The atmosphere was nice, everybody seem to know each other which got a bit loud at times but it was the Macmillan coffee morning so was to be expected. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. Will definitely be visiting again even if its only for a take-out which they do at a discounted price!

I recently came in here with family for a quick bite to eat! It's situated in a hidden courtyard behind Astins (hence the name) it's a very cute little cafe with walls adorned with flowered bunting and cute cupcakes! You can get around 4 around a table and there is seating at the counter. We were greeted with high spirits by a very chatty member of staff who made us feel welcome but the other member of staff was quite indifferent to us. The menu has a range of foods from soup to jacket potatoes to paninis with various sometimes exotic fillings! I ordered a panini and coffee and they said they would bring our drinks straight over. But they seemed to be more focused on the other customers who seemed of some importance so our drinks took way longer than they should of! My panini came quite quickly though, it was pretty average and was quite cold too but I stil enjoyed it! It! Great value for money too and the cafe is kept pristine! Worth a trip

This is a small, lovely little cafe we were delighted to find. It is down a few steps next to Lloyds TSB Bank, which is how we noticed it, as we were drawing out some more cash. We later discovered another entrance down a little passage. The two ladies serving were most pleasant and friendly, not only advising us on the menu, but they were also quite happy to chat with us about things and places in and around Whitby. The decor is lovely and it is spotlessly clean, even the ground around the outside seating was clean - not always the case as smokers now tend to sit outside cafes. The prices are good, food is made to order, they offer daily specials, and I believe they also do take-away.We certainly enjoyed the food and coffee and definitely recommend it. Gorgeous place to come to and is always on our list as a ' must go to'when we are in Filey. Beautiful setting and everything here is really delicious. The lemon meringue tart and coffee cake are to die for. It's lovely sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine. Sadly it was raining today and as we have a dog we couldn't go in, there was some seating under a canopy for the ice creams but sadly for us just a bit too chilly to sit out. It is cash only so that is something to always remember when visiting.

This pub/restaurant is under new ownership but the food and the drinks are still of exceptional quality.
