We have been to this pub before, and promised ourselves we would come back to eat. It was worth the wait! We had a delicious Sunday roast at The Plough. The portions are very generous, and the team are great! And to top it off, it's a dog-friendly pub. We will be back again - next time after a bit of a walk to make more room for lunch 😋

This pub has improved beyond all recognition from what it was a few years ago. It's clean, welcoming, with pleasant and efficient staff. The service is excellent, and the food is most acceptable traditional pub grub, served in generous portions. There is a good selection of ales and lagers, and spirits. The wine list, although not extensive, contains a good selection of Reds, Whites, and Roses. We chose the Merlot, which was amazingly good and very smooth to taste. My sister, my wife and I very much enjoyed our meal here and hope to return soon.

Good food and great service. Shame no fish and chips but pub was very busy. It would be a good idea if a tip can be left on the card used to pay the bill. Not many people carry cash now. The staff must miss out.

Prices were higher than the online menu that we looked at before we visited. The food was nothing special but the prices were restaurant level. It wasn’t really worth the extra money compared with food in local pubs. Gluten free options advertised were not available and a second choice had to be made. This was handled with apology from the server and a discount to our bill was given at the point of paying, which was good customer service. However, I still suffered a stomach ache from either glutens being present in my food or from cross-contamination- both of which show no understanding of gluten-free provision. We’ll swerve this place next time….

Stopped here with a friend for lunch after a long walk on the ridgeway. A quintessentially British pub with a good selection of pub food options! Catered well for vegetarians as well as meat eaters. Portions were large and delicious, exactly what was needed! The car park was busy on arriving too which I only saw as a good sign, especially on a Tuesday lunchtime. A selection of lighter bites was available at lunchtime as well as the full menu. The pub attracts a lot of tourists, being so close to Chequers so lots of photos were taken by other customers but staff were fantastic at noticing and getting them to stop so we could enjoy our lunch in peace!

4 of us had a meal at the plough. 3 of us had supposedly cod and chips I must say it was the worse fish chips we had ever had. It was definitely not cod as advertised, it was grey tough and flat we only eat as we were hungry And the chips are were very nice. We had this a month ago and it was delish which is why we came back.

I've deliberately left this review for a week to allow time to reflect and offer a less emotionally charged set of comments. Just like a house becomes a home when people occupy it, so a pub becomes welcoming when run by staff who are experienced at managing expectations and ‘system’ failures. In summary: • We five arrived for a lunchtime reservation. • The pub filled up with other diners including a large 12–14-person group. • We were told by the waitress serving our table that a kitchen failure meant that only jacket potatoes and sandwiches could be served. We ordered accordingly. • The 12–14-person table were served a range of hot meals as were a couple of other tables. The response from the waitress on querying this was that ‘they had pre-ordered’. • The matter was made more irritating when we could see plates of chips being readied as we ordered more drinks from the bar shortly after. • Our order didn’t come and on asking I was told bluntly that ‘there are other diners in today’. • On second enquiry – at our table, when the waitress came to see if we wanted more drinks – we were all told that there were ‘another six tables ahead of us’. Surprised and hungry, we cancelled the lunch, paid the drinks bill and left. It was disappointing that we couldn’t eat because of the kitchen failure. But problems do arise – that’s life. However, it’s galling to see others eat hot meals when we couldn’t. It’s not great to see others who arrived and ordered after us served first. And it’s just plain rude to have our concerns dealt with out of hand. I won’t be returning and judging by what the others ate elsewhere after I left, I would suggest that there are better pubs in the locality. I should say that the comments attributed to the staff are not verbatim.

I had a nice lunch here with friends on a hot day in August after a lovely walk in the surrounding hills. The main course choices were a bit dull (scampi, burgers, fish and chips, steak and ale pie, etc.) so I had two starters which was a good move. I had the warm camembert which came with cranberry sauce and celery and also the salt and pepper squid with chilli sauce. They were both very tasty and nicely cooked.

It has been a few years since our last family meet up at The Plough. We were not to be disappointed, we were pleasantly surprised at the extensive menu compared to other pubs we have visited lately. All six of us chose, coincidently, a different main course, this can be dangerous as one person at least will be disappointed. However completely not so, as all six of us hardened pub lunchers were delighted with our meals. The turn around from ordering to service was quick with all meals arriving together. The staff were helpful and attentive with all communications accompanied with a smile. The quality of the meals were very good with generous portions and all nicely presented. We shall return. Thank you all for a very pleasurable lunch, a family get together that was very enjoyable.

This pub has long been a welcome watering hole on one of our favourite local walks. For months now we have had to pass by the front door thinking longingly of a refreshing pint - so we were thrilled to be able to visit last week for the 1st time since they reopened. The current arrangements are that you walk up to an open window to the right of the front door, where there is a pad to record your contact details, laminated copies of all their menus (food & drink) & hand santiser. You place your order there & make your payment, then walk along to the open window to the left of the front door to collect your purchases. There are then plenty of tables to choose from, either in front of the pub, or in the grassy area around the side of the building. It was all so relaxed & friendly but highly efficient. There is also access to a toilet through the back door, clearly signposted. All in all a very pleasant interlude, before striking out for the 2nd half of our walk

This would have been a 'Very Good' rating, except that despite pre-ordering the food for our group of 14 walkers, there appeared to be a breakdown in communication between the 'front of house' staff at the bar and the kitchen. All sorts of dishes were brought out that we hadn't ordered or had cancelled the day before. Some sandwiches were ordered on brown but came on white. I had ordered the pie of the day, was offered a choice between chicken or steak and ale, chose the steak and ale but received a chicken pie - but with a pot of beef gravy. Despite all this chaos, the food was good and my pie and chips was a huge and tasty dish. The staff were very good about the mix up and very friendly, which helped turn round a potentially difficult situation. Prices are quite high, because of the location and recent VIP history. Given how popular this pub is with tourists because of the connection with David Cameron and the Chinese President, as well as its proximity to Chequers, goodness knows how they cope with large groups of non-English speaking Chinese tourists. Maybe we just caught them on an off day.

Pork belly had not been cooked properly and the fat was still tough. Two of us were eating and when the plates were pushed to one side (one empty and one full) three members of staff just looked and walked on by. Eventually someone came to take the plates and gave the ‘is everything ok with your meals’ standard speech and when the feedback came they went to get the manager. The response was less than satisfactory. One of us had eaten and one had not. The manage, who didn’t even share her name nor smile, responded that they had sold lots of pork that day and no-one else had complained! Perhaps I made it up - despite the clumps of fat on the plate and the dinner almost untouched. The resolution........would you like a drink on the house! £13.50 for a plate of food not eaten and the remedy is a £2.50 glass of larger. No we responded, we wanted food as we have walked 3 miles to get here and have to walk back. Oh sorry then! What can I say except we will never return. The sale of this pub in 2016 was a mistake. Was always full and not surprised now to find it half empty. Customer service at manager level is unbelievably bad and they were observed by a younger team member who will now believe that this is how you treat your customers.

Do you like waiting an hour for your food? Do you enjoy a car park littered with debris and broken glass? Is interacting with unapologetic, mouth-breathing imbeciles your idea of a cracking day out? Then come to The Plough, for all this and more! We waited an hour for four meals, and the only response from staff was glassy stares and mumbling, disinterested apologies. When the food did arrive - yaayyyy - it was mainly bland, beige and burned in places. Staff eventually claimed the chef had gone home unexpectedly - presumably he could no longer face the shame of working here. At no point, despite several complaints, did anyone offer to put things right - and that’s why it deserves such a merciless review. One of the shambling undead staff tried to claim it was busy, but the place was half empty. Mind you, I suppose that counts as bustling for such an atrocious mud puddle. Avoid.

Can someone tell me if the ‘Awful Manager’ post is an April Fools joke? Whoever heard of a Ploughman’s sandwich in a pub, never mind one with chips? There’s a clue that it’s not a sandwich as the sandwiches are all around £8 and The Ploughman’s is £12.

I ordered off the menu which is pictured here. I expected to get a ploughman’s in the form of a sandwich, because as you can see, it is on the sandwich list. No distinguishing aspect of this menu item made me think it was not a sandwich (I thought that the bread of the sandwich was toasted.) Furthermore, the waiter asked me what type of bread I would like which was in line with the other sandwich offerings. I answered with brown bread, please. I received a platter, a regular ploughman’s rather than a sandwich and it did not come with chips. I was also disappointed that the bread was instead a baguette. And some white toast. I said can I please have some brown bread which is what I ordered? The waitress proceeded to tell the manager or owner or someone who didn’t introduce herself. Instead she brought the menu over pointing to it and making me feel like an idiot about ordering the wrong thing. She was accusatory and pretentious and saying it was obvious that it was a platter and it was “clearly separated” from the sandwich list, which it obviously isn’t from my photo of the menu. I would have been ok with the whole situation had it not been for how it was handled and how they treated me. No apology, or sympathy, just disdain and lack of service. I never even got the brown bread I asked for.

It’s such a shame! The wheels seem to have fallen off! No gas so a limited menu! My Lamb and bacon arrived Luke warm and with no bacon. It was taken back to the kitchen and came back hot but with no bacon. The bacon turned up after I had finished eating which was too late. My friends jacket potato was only luke warm! I asked about the jam sponge only to be told that it was frozen - like the jacket potatoes! The Plough used to be very good but now it is very disappointing. Recommended as a lovely dog friendly pub to visit !! Dogs may be welcome but if you're a human forget it !Have seen other reviews now that say the same so you really need to get some staff in with people skills. So unwelcoming and just downright rude, went today and am still fuming from the dreadful attitude and lack of service. I won't describe the person mainly responsible because I'm not that unkind but think she'd be better off working in a prison with criminals than dealing with friendly folk who have just come out for a lovely Saturday afternoon and a couple of beers.

Very disappointing food and service at The Plough today. There were only 2 veggie options - penne arrabiata and a cheese sandwich. I ordered penne arrabiata. The pasta was overlooked and stodgy; the sauce was bland; the garlic bread was soggy and inedible. I couldn't finish it. Then I asked for a decaf coffee to be told that they didn't serve decaf. When my caffeinated coffee arrived it came with a piece of fudge that I hadn't ordered and didn't want! I will not be going to The Plough again, and will tell friends to avoid it too.

Walked here from High Wycombe on a very hot day (my choice)because I had heard that there was a new landlady and there was a new home cooked menu. I arrived and there were 3 customers who already had their drinks, I waited, I waited and waited for them to stop their conversation. After about 4mins the barmaid asked me if I would like something, well I was stood as the bar. I asked for Fosters, no Fosters so I had San Miguel instead, which was flat and I now know from a friend that it had been the evening before and he complained. I thought as it was about 6 15pm that I might be offered the food menu, but no. I write this review because I hope the landlady will take note. I should have been acknowledged when I arrived, asked if I had been before, maybe introduced herself and won me over. I was a regular for years when Steve & Sharon had it and never got bored with the place. I love the building, the surrounding and the locals that used to attend it and I do want the place to be a friendly welcoming pub that it always was, starting new friendships and great nights of fun

We'd read about the change of management and seen some of the reviews that have been written since. The location is convenient though so we decided to visit the Plough at Cadsden for a midweek evening family get-together. It's probably been two years since our last visit and what we found was real change. The pub has always been fine for reasonably priced good food but for our last few visits there had been something lacking in the service. After a walk along the Ridgeway path we stopped off at the Plough too see for ourselves what if anything has changed. I was really pleased with everything we ate and the professionalism of the staff we encountered. My partner and I both ordered sandwiches, mine was roast beef, it was served on white, the bread was freshly cut doorstop style, the beef was warm and cut from a joint of beef. It was served with a side salad and a little basket of chips, my wife had the cheddar which again was served doorstop style on white with accompanying side salad and chips. Both dishes were well seasoned and presented nicely. It was very busy and the atmosphere was just as we remembered, it's clearly doing very well and we shall return when in the area. The menu seems to be the same with the specials board near the bar, the extensive wine menu remains in place as does the good selection of beers, larger and cider.

Such a shame - this could have been a very positive review! It's a nice place and I was looking forward to some good food. The specials board looked good and there was a nice range. Starters were all pretty good - but after that it was a list of disappointments. Firstly the main meals took what seemed like an eternity to arrive - other tables were served before us even though they had arrived much later - then the chips on a couple of meals were cold - as though they had been cooked and then left to stand for a while. Both steaks were ordered as medium rare - one was pretty much correct, the other was definitely medium. Unfortunately although the young staff tried their best they really did seem to have the experience to deal with any situations at all. Next came dessert choices - and nothing that was dairy free!! Not even any sorbet instead of ice cream! The manager didn't charge us for the desserts which was a nice gesture but ultimately it was all a little disappointing - especially as it was also for a birthday meal.

The first impression of the pub was not good - huge potholes in the drive and in the car park, which was also very muddy (definitely not a place for heels) and a not particularly good cooking smell when you first go in. There was a definite reluctance to serve me with a drink - I had to wait 15 minutes even though this was early Friday evening and my friend was ignored at the bar for 10 minutes before she gave up and joined me at the table. The food was potentially very good. My friend ordered halloumi salad and pork belly, both very good and I ordered bubble and squeak ( rather soggy) and sea bream. Unfortunately part of my main course was cold and had to be sent back for reheating which meant my fish was then overlooked. Side vegetables were nicely cooked. The (very young) waiting staff tried very hard but the guy behind the bar, who I guess may be the manager, seemed particularly unfriendly and didn't seem to have his act together when it came to serving drinks or being a welcoming host! The bill of course was incorrect i.e. Our drinks had been left off the bill but since we had had such difficulty getting them I did not feel obliged to point this out. This potentially is a very nice pub but would benefit from better management and some spending on the drive and car park.

It was my first time here and I, along with my family, were disappointed from start to finish:- The staff forgot about our drinks which arrived after our starters. We were given a bottle of tap water with no glasses to drink out of. We were then asked if we wanted ice and we said no. Glasses then arrived with ice and lemon. - The food was ok. Nothing special at all. My 'pie' had a small piece of puff pastry floating on the top and some chips piled next to it. We were then told there were vegetables waiting in the kitchen for us after we had finished our meal and if we wanted them. We said no. - Grumpy staff. Seemed to be a lot of them but weren't really doing much. We asked for the vegetables to be taken off the bill but were then told by a different member of staff the pies do not come with vegetables but with salad. We didn't get any salad. Turns out the staff just didn't know the menu. Adequate food and poor customer service. I won't be visiting again anytime soon.

Used to be a bustling restaurant/pub. I can see why its slipping theyno longer serve a big plate of food. The pie was served with peas in a small dish and no more than a heaped tablespoon. The fish batter was soggy. The small salad was no more than a side dish. The 'steamed' puddings were obviously premade and not even zapped to warmth. One was returned to heat. The cheese board was the only thing that was good, definitely enough for three people. Service wasn't as attentive as it could have been had to get the waiter on more than one occasion.

On the lovely sunny day we had on Sunday 22nd January, we (that's 2 men & 2 women who are polite, respectable adults in our 50's) arrived at about 12.30pm & went in to order drinks. There were no other customers at the bar, everyone was sat at tables. We hadn't booked a table because we were only intending to enjoy our drinks in the pub garden. Our drinks order was initially taken but then a man who appeared to be in charge very rudely refused our order saying "We Are Too Busy To Serve Drinks!". I'm not one for giving bad reviews but as his attitude was terrible & he offered no apology, no explanation & just flatly refused to serve us, I'm afraid we won't ever return here or recommend it. On the plus side ..... we went down the road to The Russell Arms in Butlers Cross where we had an all round fabulous experience and have already booked a table for dinner at the Russell Arms in February.

Very poor service and only 4 dishes on the menu, so clearly no proper chef. Food came out all wrong, 2 mains and a starter, and then we had to wait for replacement in one of the mains. Food got cold. We then complained and got shouted at by a very nasty man. Gone downhill very fast.

Visited the Plough, have been a few times in the past and always very impressed. Sadly there was little atmosphere as it was very quiet considering it was a Saturday evening but in fairness as the Manager pointed out it is January. The service from the waitresses was excellent, we ordered from the "specials board" and they were special with great presentation and the side vegetables exemplary. We then went onto have a cheeseboard which unfortunately with no explanation did not come with the apple and grapes as described in the menu. When questioned an apple was produced, gherkins present maybe as a substitute who knows. The unexpected bread alongside the biscuits was dry and unpalatable. The lovely waitress said she would speak with the Manager and then it all went wrong. Let us just leave it as his "customer service skills" leave alot to be desired. Really sad as spoilt the evening, I was only after an apology and an explanation! The Manager did calm down and deducted the cost of the cheeseboard but I feel he missed the point I was not after the money just an apology would have been enough. Won't be recommending to my friends (which I have done in the past) or rushing back.

Very surprised by the recent negative reviews. Returned after a disappointing visit some months ago. Heard the pub was under new management and decided to give it another go. Received a lovely warm welcome, great choice of daily specials, food was much improved (now home cooked and very tasty), etc. Spoke to the new manager who has great plans for the place and I wish him and his staff well. Apparently a nasty virus hit the staff over Christmas hence the poor service at that time. Will definitely be back.

Popped in with my wife for lunch and was blown away by the quality of the food. I had ham, eggs and chips and my wife went for the warm chicken salad. Mine was the best ham, egg and chips I have had for a very long time and my wife loved her salad, which is saying something as she doesn't normally order it. Service was very friendly and attentive. Very impressed.

Waited ages for drinks at the bar along with many other people. Having waited 15 minutes we were all told to come back in half an hour as they could not cope. Not surprised as there were only two barmaids on a day that is always busy (Boxing Day). All other years that we have been going there on this day there has been no problem. Looks like change of ownership and change of landlords is a move too far.

We come here most Christmases for a meal with family members. The reasons we keep coming are ...(A) the beautiful surrounding area, which is perfect for a post lunch walk.(B) the lovely ambience of the traditional decor - thankfully with up-to-date lighting and heating!(C) the friendly and helpful staff, and (D) the good food - we've never had a disappointing meal here, ever.It is a popular pub but it's rare for it to be overcrowded. Nor is it ever empty!Highly recommended! If you go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

We loved the plough, good honest British pub food but today we had translucent scampi, over cooked chips and top it all...... the lady clearing the tables scraped the food off my plate onto my dads in a true transport cafe style right in front of my eyes - since the take over I'm not going back, and I'd say eat at your peril..... disgusting!

This is the second time that I've stayed at the Plough and both times have been very enjoyable (18 month gap between bookings). The rooms are nicely appointed and clean, the staff are very pleasant and helpful and the food is first rate. Top this with a great location and the Plough really is a great destination. Also of special note to business travellers: the broadband works well throughout the premises, providing 15-20Mb connectivity.

We arrived just after 2 on a Friday from an enjoyable walk after helping a lost lady motorist trying to find the M25. They advised us no food was available, not even soup or a Ploughman’s. I was surprised because this is supposed to be a pub for walkers who enjoy the wonderful surrounding countryside and can arrive at any time cold and hungry. I understand you can't cook good meals at short notice, but Soup, Rolls & Ploughman's should be available as long as the pubs open for business. So we ordered a pint of Rebellion and half a shandy, only to be told we couldn’t have a shandy made with Real Ale because it was time consuming to mix! The beer is well kept but it feels more like a chain restaurant than a traditional pub.So we drank up and left with the feeling it was an unfriendly pub which lacks warmth. This is a Pity because it should be a welcoming haven for walkers and lovers of real ale. Next time we’ll stick to pubs in the Good Beer guide.

Highly recommend this pub for their fantastic food. It is always consistently excellent. Great variety and the Sunday lunch is the best, the meat is always tender and tasty with crispy roast potatoes and perfectly cooked veg.

Visited for lunch with some friends. Good country atmosphere. Plenty of choice on the menu and some interesting specials too. Driving so was not able to sample the beer or take a glass or two of wine. We were all happy with our food and service was efficient, didn't have to wait long. We sat and chatted with our friends for about three hours and there was no move to send us on our way - appreciate that.Just one point of criticism which knocks a star off from an excellent rating. The practice of ordering food at the bar sets the wrong tone, do they want to be a "Hungry Horse" type establishment or a full service pub? Give your wait staff a pad and pen, take the orders at the table. Then they can relate better with the customer and earn a gratuity. Will return, but hope they will take this comment on board.

Came here expecting more, left confused and disappointed. Two of us ordered home made pies which were very nice but very expensive given they were shallow dishes half filled and topped with a pastry lid.. there were two pricing options, I think it was £11 or £15 and we were told £15 was large... I dread to think what you'd get for £11.Both pies came with Chips and Peas on the menu and I asked if we could swap the sides on one dish for some mixed vegetables which I was told was fine. When the pies arrived they both came with a huge pile of chips and a pile of carrots! We asked the lady serving what had happened and she went to the kitchen and came back and said if we wanted vegetables we have to order them separately and pay extra which we did. 5 minutes later arrived a very small plate of cubed swede, cabbage and a third vegetable I can't remember. To be fair the pie and chips were very nice but totally overpriced. the whole carrots for peas thing was just bizarre!Would not bother to make the journey up here again

I took my parents there for lunch today. We had 2 chicken, bacon and avo salads, the chicken was pale with no flavour, from a packet? I had some pieces of salad served that belonged in the bin. The Ploughman's cheese salad, had one prebaked bun and a piece of cheese and a bit of chutney on one third of the plate, the rest of the plate was covered in salad and an orange and an apple? No care was given to these meals at all. What a great setting, just such a disappointment that there was NOTHING special to these meals.

My friend and I went for lunch, he had scampi and chips, I had cod and chips. The day we went the place was full of Chinese tourists busy photographing everything - bar, walls, fireplace, tables, staff, food, customers, themselves....The food took a long time to come and although there was a lot of it, it wasn't great, the chips were like cardboard, really tasteless, and for some reason the very small salad garnish had a quarter of a strawberry which was just unnecessary. Coffee and tea also took a long time to come and although the meal was not expensive, about £20 each, no wine, it really wasn't worth it.

A local recommended this place for Sunday lunch. The meal took 45 minutes from order to arrival and whilst there was plenty it was expensive and of average quality. The gravy in particular tasted like it was made from power and was tasteless. I'm not sure I'd recommend anyone to go here.

The Plough has a good varied food and wine menu and the specials are always worth checking out. Food portions are generous and food is served hot. You really need to book ahead even mid week. The service is not fast...so allow 2 hrs for three courses. Nice ambience and you can take dogs if you don't mind sitting outside.

We took a friend of mature years for lunch in the Plough. He was delighted with the setting and we were all delighted with the food. No one will leave hungry after a substantial lamb shoulder shank and an excellent platter of vegetables! Add in good service and a relaxed ambience and it's a delightful venue for a drink or a meal. It's also on The Ridgeway and offers hospitality to walkers.

Four of us had lunch here and I have to say the food was really good and the staff all really lovely and polite. This is David Cameron's local, although on this occasion, he wasn't sitting in the corner! Three of us had the shoulder of lamb and I have to say it was really lovely and for me way more than I could eat, it was accompanied by roast potatoes plus a massive choice of fresh veg (hence why I was stuffed), the fourth had gammon, fresh egg and chips, which he raved about and said it was the best ham he had ever tasted. Two of them had desserts, which again they loved. All in all a lovely lunch in a beautiful location. Definitely would go back again.

We have had dinner here twice recently with two different sets of family members and enjoyed both visits. The first was a quiet Tuesday night and the second a very busy Friday night when the place was packed. They have a very good pub-grub menu plus an extensive specials board (all at £15) and all meals were of a very high quality, plus loads of it! As well as the main courses which all seemed to come with potato etc we were brought a huge dish of vegetables plus more potato! It was more than we could eat but you wouldn't go hungry. We still managed to somehow find room for pudding though and my only slight issue was that the lemon meringue pie didn't taste very lemony. I think this may have been bought in so the 2nd time I opted for one of the home-made desserts.

Caribbean curry needed to be returned to kitchen as it arrived tepid, and it was very bland - not at all fruity or spicy as described on menu. In addition to this, l left with a very sticky sleeve and underside of trainers where a spill hadn’t been hadn’t been cleaned properly.

Arrived at the premier inn to stay away for work, went to the brewers fayre. I walked in and was told they have a limited menu due to shortages of food. Wasn't given a menu of the limited menu even just habit of a4/a5 bit of paper so we could see what was on offer. We then sat for around 15-20 minutes before someone came over to ask for drinks and they only came over because we prompted to do so. After drinks and food was ordered drinks turned up a further 15 minutes later and again I had to go to the bar to get it. If the restaurant was busy I would understand however it was empty. I ordered the big stack burger and it came out scorched with the tiniest dollop of sauce in the burger. The second night we weren't greeted at the door we had to wait 10 -15 minutes before someone came and took us to our seats. Overall not great, which is a shame as I have eaten at brewers fayre before and it's really good service and food. So I'm putting this experience to a "bad week".
