Very nice lunch. As there was a large crowd in, service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a hurry! Have been several times recently and always enjoyed the good food. Hope to come again soon.

My meal came cold and wasn’t on a warm plate. Had to be sent back. Veg was a load of mush with meat and Yorkshire piled on top. Roast potatoes not crispy. Food was tasteless and extremely disappointing. The waitress was polite but there was only 2 staff on and wasn’t adequate to cover the whole pub. I used to like going to the plough but it has gone down.

The waiter (bartender) was fantastic, super polite and friendly! The atmosphere in the pub is very calm and warm, very different from other pubs that I've been too. Not filled with a lot of loud people, pretty chill. The food was amazing, and pretty fancy (imo), all were presented very well. I'd said the food is very authentic, it kinda represents the country. Overall, really happy and satisfying with the food, would recommend it!!

Update August 24: We are so pleased to have this lovely pub near us. We went for quizz night and even took part in it. The atmosphere is amazing, the food is lovely (well done chef) and the staff was really really lovely. This is one of the only pub when, despite having gone for a long time, we are never unhappy with the food. The quality is really high and consistent (plough burger is a must and the chocolate mouse is delicious) If you are in the area, I highly recommend it! We will come back as usual :)

Was here last Wednesday and my meal was good. My wife's meal was the Chicken Escoplope, however the chicken was cold, it had processed breadcrumbs and bland. When asked by staff if we were we happy, my wife said no and said she really didn't want to pay for it as it was only half eaten. This was sorted. Please note we eat there all the time and rarely do we complain about anything and if we do there's a reason and the manager has agreed. Plus we spent a lot of money there and went nearly every week (not any more). How are you supposed to give feedback for a meal if it's not good and then get an email like below ? Now I get an email from the company saying they won't accept a booking from us as we have complained too much !!! If they want to lose local people then that's fine but even when I spoke to the owner he said he had comped too many meals to us. But I said only if we complained, which you are allowed to do and we always tip bring friends, etc. Very bad way to keep your business

A nice pub with a good atmosphere, a traditional menu and reasonably priced food. Friendly staff, we were well looked after and served promptly with nice hot food and plenty of it. I would have liked to see a couple of veg/vegan dishes and I was surprised that when we ordered coffee there was no milk alternative. We were also surprised that although we ordered our coffees at 9pm we only just managed to be served as we were told the machine was going to be switched off! Could it not have been switched on or a kettle switched on. However, we did get our coffee, so the problem wasn't ours, but we weren't the last in the pub when we left at 10pm. Otherwise a good evening, but I would have to think twice about going again, only because of the veg/vegan options. I suffer from dairy and lactose allergy as well as a beef allergy which left me with nothing to have which wasn't going to cause me some problems. I know my allergies are not exactly common, but not to have oat milk at least is a mistake, I believe, as it's offered in so many other places. Nonetheless, my friends were well satisfied with the menu but were puzzled by the coffee issue.

I must admit, our expectations were mixed as we knew it would be a really busy time to visit, but I have to say we were all totally impressed with everything. I had requested an extra seat two days previously and, although I wasn't told no, I got the feeling that it might be a bit of a squash! However, when we arrived, our table had been extended and I felt that the staff had gone above and beyond to accommodate us. Updating in response to owner reply: We visited recently as family of four for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately the menu we saw online was different to that offered on the day with no alternatives to roast dinner other than the children's menu (and weren't advised when we booked). My teenage son is a little too old for the children's menu and had wanted the fish and chips, but was told it wasn't possible. Overall the roast was better than we've had elsewhere (the roast beef was very good), however the parsnips were almost raw and one of the pork belly servings was mostly crackling and fat with hardly any meat (which it was hard to find as food was in a single pile on the plate). We were aware that the pub is dog-friendly and this isn't usually a problem, but there was a dog wandering around the pub, looking for and eating scraps from under our table as well as sitting on the furniture. Some of our party have allergies and also fear of dogs, so sadly didn't make for a comfortable atmosphere for us.

Don't come for Sunday lunch. We've been here an hour and still no initial drinks, let alone any food. Seems to be only kids waiting and no communication at all. Just been informed no lamb roast which we ordered over 40 minutes ago. UPDATE Next day: have added one star to food which was ok and another star to overall as per below. We were told that the young lad had forgotten to pass the order ticket to the chef which was not great. This was the reason I had missed my lamb roast as other orders after mine meant it ran out. He was very apologetic but then didn't take care when putting the meals down and while apologising, poured some gravy off the plate edge over my wife's mobile. It was quickly retrieved and wiped and thankfully no damage. The food tasted ok although the burgers seemed light on fillings - beef patty, lettuce, gherkin and burger sauce - not even a tomato in sight. Run out of those too? The waitress in charge did take 10% off the bill at the end and apologised again. At least they recognised the poor service but I would much rather have a nice, tasty, organised meal at full price. Sadly, I won't be recommending this pub, maybe a quiet lunchtime as we have done once before might be the limit. Definitely not a Sunday lunch though. Note it wasn't just our table affected - one elderly couple had their meal delivered to the wrong table by another of the young lads, and shortly after, the same lad got a gentleman's beer order wrong not once but twice. Thankfully he seemed amused by it all.

Don't come for Sunday lunch as the service was terrible. We had reserved a table and were seated ok but it took an age for someone to come and take our drinks order. We ended up ordering food at the same time, given the delay. We could see they were busy so were patient for drinks but after 45 minutes I got up and asked and was told they would check and bring our drinks to us. It still took 10 minutes to bring them but were then told there was no more Youngs bitter so we had to pick an alternate beer. It seemed to be just 2 young lads serving our side of the pub and while it is good that they are out working it seemed that the pub was missing some overall management on the day as there was no communication at all. After an hour we were then informed there were no lamb roasts left despite ordering that almost an hour earlier. We were told that one of the young lads had forgotten to pass the order ticket to the chef which was not great.

The Plough is our local, and we're only a few minute's walk away. We had dinner there last night and it was delicious, as usual. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the staff are friendly and welcoming, and the food is great. There's also draught Shere Drop, a massive selection of gins, and Ruby the dog! Update December 2022 - had a very enjoyable family Christmas dinner at The Plough. My third festive meal this year and by far the best food, service and atmosphere. I had the white onion soup 🍲 followed by turkey 🐔 with all the trimmings and sticky toffee pudding 🍮to finish. A very nice bottle of Fleurie 🍷 made it even more special. Thanks to Pete and the team for making it so enjoyable. Update April 2023 - just had a delicious birthday lunch, yummy smoked haddock followed by apple and rhubarb crumble!

Once again our visit to The Plough at Effingham was fantastic. Sunday lunch roast pork and crackling with roasties and no less than four different vegetables. Beautifully cooked and presented. Followed by home made Malteaser ice cream!! Excellent value for money. We’ve tried all the pubs in and around the area and keep coming back to this one!

Deze pub wordt gerund door de dorpsbewoners. Heel enthousiaste bediening en lekker eten voor een geringe prijs. Bij mooi weer ook buiten eten in de beergarden.

So always served quickly and food is good however prices have gone up a bit and they only take cash??!!! Is always busy at the weekends but they are closing all of august WHAT ??? It’s the only place to grab a descent bite to eat in the daytime around here. Improvements would be better quality of red and brown sauce they do use the cheaper versions which in my opinion ruins the breakfast.

A friend and I went to The Cyder House for a mid-week lunch at the end of October. The décor in this pub is very smart, the staff very pleasant and the food was excellent. The day we went it was “Steak Thursday.” My friend had the rump steak and chips. He said it was the best steak he had had in England for a very long time. Perfectly cooked when he requested “rare.” I had the fish and chips. Once again perfectly cooked. In addition to the great food there is an excellent selection of local beers, including TEA and Hog Star Larger. This pub has several rooms and they were more than happy to re-seat us when the noisy, badly behaved and uncontrolled children at a nearby table were beginning to make our lunch experience less than pleasant! Perhaps the management should suggest to the parents that unless they can keep their children under control they will give them Red Bulls to drink and teach them rude words! I am told than for Sunday lunch it is essential to book. Recommended. I would be more than pleased to return.

Sunday lunch, for family 2 adults and two children. Only Sunday roast available, Turkey or beef. Asked for gravy on the side , all came smothered in a thick dark brown gravy and a jug of gravy on the side. Very poor presentation and the quality of the turkey was poor but the single slice of beef was the toughest I ever had. We didn’t even consider dessert ! Not to be recommended, AVOID.
