As always the staff were helpful and polite. However, we were not happy about the air conditioning being put on in October and as we were sitting almost directly underneath an air vent, it became very uncomfortable and chilly sitting there. This spoilt the experience somewhat. I ordered the salmon muffin for lunch which was on a 'toasted' muffin. Sadly, the muffin was rather soft and didn't taste toasted at all. Otherwise an agreeable place to eat.

Visited with my sister - ordered some tea after a small wait - 1 lady rushing around putting people at tables !! We asked her if we could order some cake to go with the tea and she said it wasn’t her job and someone would be over - by the time someone came over the tea was gone and we had waited long enough !! Find some staff and treat customers better - really is not that difficult !!! Much nicer places to go in BSE!!!

We called in for a tea and bacon bap. The bread wasn’t fresh (at least a day old and the bap hadn’t been buttered leaving it tasting dry. We asked for extra ketchup sachets as we like our tomato sauce with bacon. The single sachet provided hardly covered a small area of the bacon so we asked for more. These were brought to us but we were told we’d be charged for them. I cannot think of another establishment who has ever charged us extra for sauces and quite honestly it left us feeling annoyed and let down by this restaurant. Lots needed here to improve things. It wasn’t the extra 50p witch made the difference (see photo of bill), it was the way it was done.

I was very disappointed with my afternoon tea on my birthday, very poor four quarters of sandwich, no selection , a small scone with just cream, I requested jam which was provided. Three small squares of cake each which were lovely. The worst part of the tea were the surly staff, basically we were treated very poorly especially by one woman who reluctantly pointed us in the direction of our table. We even had to ask for a teaspoon so that we could remove the teabags from our cups. We were never asked if everything was ok. Very poor quality and even worse service

Small bowls of soup, slices of cake were not large by any means. I had a slice of cheesecake and was charged £6 for a small slice. My husband complained. About his Victoria songe as it was stale! My son’s jacket potato with chilli beef, very small portion of chilli… very disappointing. The prices have gone up and the portion size has gone way down. Won’t be eating here again.

Went for lunch with a friend. Used to visit a lot but a few years ago the prices started to creep up and felt other places offered better coffee and more imaginative food options at more reasonable prices. After my recent visit, this opinion hasn’t changed. The menu is very expensive now. £10 for a prawn sandwich. I opted for scrambled egg and smoked salmon muffin. Again £10. More expensive than other venues we visit for breakfast in nicer surroundings. I’m not sure how the eggs were cooked but the whites and yolk were quite separate, almost like mashed boiled egg, rather than a creamy scramble. Smoke salmon did have a nice flavour. It came with a few lettuce leaves and seeds as garnish. Frankly a bit of a waste as no flavour or nutritional value. Coffee latte didn’t have a lot of flavour. As Bury St Edmunds has so many good eating options I’m afraid I won’t be going back anytime soon.

On the very few occasions I have visited this coffee shop, I have been shocked and horrified at the cost of a coffee. Served in a tiny cup and over £3.00 is ridiculous !! I expect a MUG of coffee for this price ! Staff not always friendly, with some clearly acting like they would rather be elsewhere. Shame because it’s nice and clean but sadly lacking finesse and atmosphere.

Called in on a Saturday morning just as they opened. Seated by the window. Great friendly service and surroundings. We had two sausage with mushrooms in the roll, these were delicious and tasty. The roll was very nice crisp outside but nice and soft inside. The teas were nice with a good selection, we had a breakfast and Assam tea. My only fault would be the poor quality tomato ketchup in those horrible sachets. The cake looked great too.

We have visited this cafe several times and have always found it to be acceptable but on the expensive side. Recently, we called in for lunch, (the cafe was like a sauna and apparently the heating could not be turned off ?) and had to wait 8 minutes to be acknowledged even though the place was nearly empty.. I had a sandwich which was accompanied by a few crisps and what was supposed to be a salad garnish (a few small leaves covered in a dressing and looked like something the cat had brought up) My partner had a jacket potato, which was awful and had never seen the inside of a conventional oven (microwaved !) the drinks were lukewarm at best. We do not make a fuss, but vote with our feet and will not return to be ignored and ripped off again I expect the response to be feeble and denying everything, but my reviews here are always honest, (feel free to read them) sorry if that offends.

We were walking around Glasswells and decided to pop into the 'cafe' for a quick cup of tea and something to eat. After deciding not to order any sandwiches given their very high price we ordered two pots of tea and toasted tea cakes. The tea came in ONE not particularly large teapot and basically only gave us one and half cups of tea in what were also quite small cups. We were then charged £4.80 for the privilege (not including the tea cakes). I'm sorry but that was ridiculous. We did query if we had been given the correct size teapot when we paid but was just told "oh well that is what we usually give"! Obviously reading the comments below some people love the food there and must be quite happy to pay those prices but given that it is nothing more than a furniture store cafe I would expect the prices to be much more reasonable - and more generous to boot.

We decided to try The Place to Eat on the recommendation of a family member and were not disappointed. We arrived at what seemed to be their busiest time so waited to be sat (not a problem) we were asked to scan the NHS QR code or if we were not able to do so we could fill out a section on the menu. As we were being sat the one way system that was in place was explained to us, that they do table service so another member of staff would be across to take our order. We didn't wait too long and our order was taken, drinks came promptly and the food followed a little while later I had chosen the cheese and bacon quiche which was amazing and my partner had a tuna mayo jacket potato. We couldn't fit in a desert so opted to take two slices of cake away with us. The staff, although were obviously extremely busy, were lovely, friendly and polite.

My husband and I decided after looking around at furniture to visit the cafe for something to eat and drink. After waiting to be seated, the waitress said she’ll be back to take our order. We waited and waited, still no waitress. Another couple arrived after us, was shown to their table and were served after a short while. We were amazed at the lack of service considering it was after 3pm in the afternoon and the cafe wasn’t busy. We were still not served or acknowledged by any of the waiting staff, so we decided to leave. We will not be returning or maybe if we’ve got a spare 24 hours we might consider it, but we won’t hold out much hope of being served…….

So it puzzles me that I can't have bacon ,sausage, scrambled egg, beans and toast on a plate without a bap?? Can someone please explain the logic behind this?

I just did a quick visit late morning with friends for a coffee and a bite. I knew it was the right place for today. Glasswell is a beautiful shop and you would expect the coffee shop to be equally good. It is, but not the staff who looked after us. Not only she was grumpy, ok it was Monday morning and I agree, i don't know why but this is the worse possible day of the week. If something goes really wrong it can only be on a Monday. However, when you take a job which is all about customers' service you can't be that grumpy. Not only she was impatient with us, although it didn't take us that long to decide what we were having, but she got my order wrong. I had asked for a luxury hot chocolate, you know those which are coming with fluffy whipped cream and marshmallows. It only came with hot chocolate. As she realised it she picked it up quite abruptly and muttered something as such that the top was missing. But when she brought it back, as they had filled up too much the cup with liquid, tube extra top was actually far too much so half of the hot chocolate, not so hot anymore, was running along the cup into the saucer. As I couldn't drink it like that i had to use the spoon, which made it even worse. I wasn't impressed. It was quite obvious that wasn't right asked shouldn't have been served in the same cup but in a bigger mug.

I have been several times before as a solo diner and always felt I had been given good service. Today however the service was very poor. I was ushered in to take a seat which I did at a table positioned at the back of the restaurant at a table for two as I was a solo diner. The restaurant was not busy so I thought I would be served fairly quickly but I waited 20 minutes before being asked for my order and whilst others who came after me were served before me. There were about six waitresses on and I find it hard to understand why I was ignored. When I finally gave my order I complained about the wait and that others were being served before me and then I got served a very dry scone which i think was deliberately given to me as I had complained.

Our tea for two was excellent, my open prawn sandwich was a meal in a moment, lovely crisp salad made the dish. My wifes egg & cress sandwich was bursting at the seams with filling. Couldnt complain at all and great for something quick and tasty whilst shopping.

I go to this restaurant on a regular basis. The staff are welcoming and friendly and the jacket potatoes are a good size oven baked with plenty of filling and a side salad. Free newspapers to peruse and a selection of cakes if you still have some space.

A nice cafe to pop into when shopping in Glasswells or indeed simply to meet friends in. Nice cakes, sandwiches, jacket potatoes etc and lots of staff so you're not left hanging around when you want to get on with things.A good find and warmly recommended

Good little cafe hidden away but a stones through from the hypermarket around the corner. And to my surprise the best scones for a country mile - which is about as far as I had to walk to burn off those calories! Nice pot of tea and a clean table to work on. Service good.

Good service but prices are getting a bit high for what you get.! Pot of tea for 2 = £4.40 and you only just about get a cup each..? Things are definitely changing and not for the better.!!!

I came here with my 2 year old and my mum on a rainy afternoon. We each had a cake a drink. One coffee, one Tea and one kids hot chocolate. The cakes of which I can't remember what we had, were of a very generous size and really good. The drinks were superb for a cafe bolted on to a store,in fact debenhams and m&s could do with visiting and taking hints. The hot chocolate was flipping amazingly good, the best I've had to finish for my son.Nice clean resteraunt and we'll priced. The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 which it should have been was the member of staff who took payment was very rude. She was older than the young staff who served us who were very nice a polite. No thanks for your custom, no smile, just took money with no eye contact or please, literally just said "bye then" and turned her back to get on with her conversation. The rest of the staff I couldn't fault, and that extends to those on the shop floor too.Shame as I want to give it 5 stars.

Just had a lovely leisurely lunch break and chat over a hot chocolate volcano. The renovations are fab with very comfortable seats and friendly staff. Super quick service. The only suggestion would be for blinds to be installed in the new conservatory due to the sun nearly blinding us.

Pleasantly surprised at how lovely the place looks now that it's been done up, I have been here before but a while ago, so suggested to my mum we have lunch here. We got a great seat near the window, nice and light with comfortable chairs, we were starving, so chose what we wanted straight away. I had looked round to get the attention of the waitress but saw them all in conversation near the desk, I decided to head up and quickly place my order, one of the girls said she will come right over to the table so I had to walk back and wait for her to join so she could then take our order... (we may have been a little impatient as we were so hungry) but within a few minutes our food had arrived! Only a toasted tuna melt, but tasted great! And the cappuccino went down a treat too! The bill came to about £14 for 2 toasties and 2 regular cappuccinos. I would recommend a lovely lunch here!

not happy.Visited again because my mother wanted to attend this monstrosity of a cafe. She has coeliac disease and specifically informed the waitress of her illness and that she NEEDED everything to be avoided from gluten. So the coffee arrives, and what is that on the side a gluten biscuit, we avoided that and she continued. she had ordered a GLUTEN FREE chilli Jacket Potato. Straight after eating she has been feeling sick and now we're home she knows why. Care was not taken and now I will be looking after my mother while her body tries to digest the enzyme which her body cannot physically do. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE WHEAT, GLUTEN OR CELIAC ILLNESSES. Second time I have visited and I am not happy.

3 of us Queued for lunch and eventually got in at 13:50. Order taken after 5 minutes and food arrived at 14:30. Two jacket potatoes and a very average chicken breast with overcooked vegetables. We were served a warm bottle of house rose. Two separate couples sat at the table next to us and both left as never got served. Need more staff.........

We had an afternoon tea here recently and have to say it was one of the best we have had. The sandwiches were so fresh and the cakes absolutely delicious. The scones were stunning. An afternoon tea that could grace any top notch restaurant. Will certainly call in again next time we visit

After a long walk from the town centre to glasswells especially to try the place to eat, myself and my partner were greeted by a variety of older generations who looked concerned as to why we were here. I believe this uncomfortable feeling is because we are 18 year olds who are both tattooed and pierced, not the usual short haired, summer dressed old biddies who tend to enjoy the food which is offered. After a long wait in a queue, we were met by a lovely lady who showed us to our seat. Service was quick, however when our milkshakes arrived the milk was in fact warm and room temperature with what I can only describe as cheap neapolitan vanilla icecream which looked very unappetising within my chocolate milkshake, however we refused to complain as we were too hungry to argue. Our food arrived quite quickly, however I noticed within my first bite of my prawn sandwich a dark hair which resembled an eyelash hiding between the salad and the prawns. Again, I was too hungry to say anything and therefore ate around it. We are currently sitting within the place to eat wandering how one orders apple crumble when no staff are around and when you queue up for the till the older generation are cautious of your every move. Hint* do not move quickly in dark clothing* All in all, the food is a bit expensive for when they are offering, however due to the location of the business it is understandable and therefore they can do this sort of inhuman act to society. The waitress with the ipad seems unhappy that I have finally got to order my apple crumble and custard, however, one does not chose to work in such an esblishment when one is in need.Have a joyful afternoon as the weather is permitting :)

Good food and not too expensive. Service is good and we didn't have to wait long for food. Two minor negative points: toilets are about a 2 minute walk away (doesn't sound long but trust me, it is when you have a young child desperate for the loo!!!) and they have no dairy free cakes!!!

Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.

My partner's family booked in for celebrating one of his sisters bithday. Best meal ever. The restaurant and staff are lovely. The starters are delicious especially scallops, fresh and juicy. We also had bread and butter from nibblers, wellcooked handmade bread I ever had. Mains are also great, can't fault a Steak cooked to perfection. We had a good time and will definitely go back.

We hired it for my husband's Celebration of Life. Full of history but little bit shabby. Staff were great, very helpful & obliging. Toilets nice & clean.

Very rude landlord not at all sympathetic to an autistic young adult whom had never been in a pub before wasn’t sure what he was doing, was told to leave as he didn’t speak to the landlord on entry and didn’t order a drink straight away he was finding his bearings as being autistic was in a very unfirmiliar atmosphere
