The Pillar of Rock in Bolsover

Easily seated at 12:15pm for a Saturday lunch. Seating is only available outside due to current covid restrictions. Smaller menu that normal but plenty of choice, plus quite a few vegetarian options. Service was 10/10. Food was hot and tasty. I should have remembered to ask for Pepsi without ice as it was cold outside!

Popped in for late lunch, wasn't too hungry so shared the offer '3 plates for £7.50' and wasn't disappointed. A pizza, 5 pieces of Southern fried chicken and bacon & cheese topped fries. Covid measures in place, meet and greet and options given on how to order.

We visited at 6.10pm on Saturday evening and it was surprisingly not very busy. We had a choice of tables inside and outside. I really like the protective screens between tables. The automatic hand sanitizers needs upgrading as it is potent but the manual hand sanitizers which are also available are have a much nice foam / hand gel. I ordered a roasted vegetable pizza with extra toppings of bbq sauce and pineapple. What I love it that they are very generous in their toppings, however the bbq topping was served in a pot, not on the pizza! This is the second time it's happened and a bit odd really. I think you can add bbq sauce as an extra (on the side) to a burger but it's lost in technology between ordering via the app and being processed in the kitchen, and therefore ends in a pot, not on your pizza. Also there were no mushrooms on the pizza, which actually is better for me as I don't like them, but it would have been polite to be told about a lack of topping when the food was brought to us. My husband had a tasty chicken burger and paid an extra £2.00 for a side / topping of chilli con carne but it was a very small portion for the cost and not very warm either. My daughter ordered a bigger appetites meal of 5 chicken nuggets with peas and chips but only received 4! It was also disappointing to see that the vegetable selection had been reduced to only two options - peas or baked beans - and that the vegetable sticks have been take off. I do like the fact that a child can choose a piece of fruit for their pudding. Table service was speedy and friendly and for the first time in a very long time, the lady came back to our table 5 mins after we'd started eating to make sure everything was okay. My pizza was delicious and very filling, and we all finished with empty plates.

Came here during the eat out to help out scheme, so for a start it was amazing value. The food was beautiful, had three small plates for £7.50, and the mini desserts for 99p. The staff were very pleasant and the service was great. Would come here again.

A family breakfast was ruined by poor service , even poorer management. We all know that bank holidays can be busy at the best of times... but having to wait nearly 80 minutes for a breakfast that arrived stone cold was beyond the pail. When I tried to complain to the duty manager he just nonchalantly said that there was nothing he could do and proceeded to chat casually to his bar staff without even trying to apologise. Wetherspoons usually offer a great service however this particular wetherspoons really let the side down !!

Me and my friends went to the pillar of rock yesterday. One friend wanted a chicken tikka with chips instead of rice, so went to the bar to order. The food came an hour later without popadoms and naan bread and also with rice! This is not was she ordered. We questions this and the manager came over and told us we would have to pay for all the extras as it’s ‘our fault’?! We paid for the extras to just keep peace, the extras took ages to come at this point the tikka had gone cold. Instead my friend was offered a small chicken strip meal ,worth less than the tikka, when this arrived it was served to her a disgusting, sarcastic attitude and a ‘doggy bag’ to put the scraps in, she said “don’t throw it away this time” this overall experience was horrible it made us all feel really uncomfortable. The was she spoke to us was belittling and rude! We understood that is was busy and mistakes can happen but there was no need for us to be spoken to in such a way.

I ordered a meal, waited an hour for it to come out wrong, They then made me pay for some bits of the meal again to still not bring it me out! Waiter told me it was my fault then wouldn’t refund me, wouldn’t listen and had awful customer service ! If I was a middle aged woman or a family I wouldn’t be spoke to or dealt with the way I was! By the time I got food which wasn’t the curry I ordered , I got chips and chicken! I was very polite and patient but didn’t get the same back! I also only got the small strips meal.

Ordered some steaks. There are far better steaks than what I've eaten. Safety-wise, the restaurant adheres to social distancing guidelines. So thumbs up with that. Utilized Wetherspoon app for taking of orders and payment, which was a brilliant idea to limit frequent interaction between customers and staff, in the era of new normality. A glass screen is placed between tables as a droplet precaution.

I’m all for having to train new staff how to cook the meals but they could at least check the meals are up to scratch before they are sent out. Starter was sent out same time as the mains. pulled chicken, bacon and avocado salad with balsamic vinaigrette was missing the pulled chicken and no way was that the correct dressing that came with it. Poppadum’s that came with curry were in no way edible and just looked like they had been left in a vat of oil for a very long time. Such a shame as I’ve eaten here before and loved it.

The kids all had fish and chips. They said they were the best they’ve ever had The portions sizes were plenty big enough Great value for money

We really enjoyed the curry night. We went large and got an onion bhaji and vegetable samosa as extras. Shame though that only one option was vegetarian. Loved that fact that you get unlimited mango chutney as it's a staple on the table with other sauces

Food and Drinks as per Weatherspoons was excellent value for money. However it feels lacking in character - very bland. Would I visit again? If I visit this neck of the woods - yes But I wouldn't go out of my way to visit.

Gone for breakfast with the girls this morning, what a mistake. My toast was black, eggs rock hard, food was cold. As i was pinned in by the 9am drinkers and we didn’t get a check back so i was unable to complain but when the mature waitress came to clear the table i did inform her and got a couldn’t care less attitude. The only way i could get out to leave was by climbing over the table due to the 9am boozers. Seriously sort it out. A lovely pub in the evening but bad in the morning.

Quick cheap and tasty. Two people for less than £20. All made easy by ordering on the app. Standard Wetherspoons.

Called in for a catch up with an ex-colleague. Didn't eat but had copious amounts of a real dark ale. Very satisfying to the palate. Had 6 pints and it cost me less than £15. That's mega value.

Me and my partner came to Wetherspoons last night we order a triple chicken feast with some extra hot wings and a tuna and cheese melt panini which wasn’t even melted. We instantly felt ill immediately chips tasted like they was cooked a week ago, chicken was uncooked and the sauce with the hot wings tasted gone off! (Smelt it to). We had to leave as my partner began to feel very unwell. After leaving he was constantly being sick straight away bringing it all back up. This nearly resulted in a trip to the hospital with a worse case of food poisoning! We have tried contacting the manager over the phone and said we would like to complain and then they hung up and ignored the phone several times! Will definitely not be returning.

Called in for breakfast, staff friendly ,good friends meeting place, it was cooked fresh and excellent value for money, good choice on menu.

Loads to choose from. Cosy seating. Vegan pizza with added pineapple and bbq sauce was very good. Instead of using vegan cheese, they use no cheese at all, so it's much healthier

This place is my saviour when I'm in the area, the smashed avocado muffin from the breakfast menu is a real treat and the place has numerous nice little areas to sit where I can work uninterrupted on my laptop.

We visit every week, the Sirloin steak on Tuesdays is at a special reduced price, great value. The staff are excellent, great atmosphere the hub to meet locals, for a catch-up.

Very good atmosphere, service and excellent toilet facilities in a good lunchtime location. Meals generally very good but my steak only just acceptable.

As with most chain pub/eateries this was a very popular place to dine.there was a great choice of food on offer.which arrived punctual & piping hot.the staff were very friendly and helpful.both food & drink very reasonably priced.the night was made even better as was with family. only thing id say is if you want a la carte then this place isn't for you.it is also a good place for people with limited mobility or wheelchair or with pushchair etc.even better if you download weatherspoons app you can order & pay for everything without leaving table.only problem we had was the toilets are upstairs. & need radar key for disabled toilet.although I'm sure if we asked at bar they'd give you a key

We called at The pillar of Rock with our Granddaughter Isabelle and her friend Molly on Monday 28th October for an early Tea. The girls ordered Burgers, my wife ordered Sausage and mash and I ordered Barbercue Chicken, the meals came within 15 mins, no it's not al a carte, but the Food was hot, looked good on the plate, with no complaints from any of us. Didn't have any problems with the waiters or bar staff. One thing you find at all Tim Martin's Pubs / resteraunts, "a good pint of John Smith's", this was no different.

My wife and I were visiting the area, and popped in to the pillar of rock for an early evening meal. Loverly place, service was excellent and the food was great, good portions, great value for money, highly recommended.

We had lunch here before visiting the nearby castle and came away satisfied, but not amazed. The menu is typical pub food and the prices reasonable. Its best selling point is the proximity to the Bolsover Castle.

The pizza here was very good on our most recent visit. We had a spicy meat feast and a vegetable pizza. The vegetarian pizza was delicious and I asked for no mushrooms, which they remembered to exclude. Our young daughter had scampi with peas and cucumber and tomato sticks. The lady behind the bar wasn't familiar with the kids menu, so there was a bit of misunderstanding and mix up but she got there in the end. Nice option to have cherry Pepsi max on offer.

After an afternoon looking at bolsover castle we were hungry and thirsty and were looking forward to having some lunch. This pub does not allow dogs inside that we understand but they are not allowed in the beer garden either. Hubby was just about to order when we noticed the signs. It’s a shame as you will lose customers and revenue because people don’t like to leave their dogs in a car especially on a sunny day. So another pub got our custom and money

Must be the best Wetherspoons I've visited so far; although we didn't eat during our visit we were near the open kitchen and could see the food service - excellent and efficient service and all the dishes looked very good indeed; Bar and Service staff were efficient and friendly; the interior is lovely and the location is wonderful; as with most Wetherspoons a trip to the Ladies loos is an adventure in itself - but these took my breath away - I won't spoil it for anyone else but don't visit this pub without going to the Ladies toilets - assuming you're female hahahaha

Decent food, sufficient but not huge portion size, good value.

My family and I visited this venue for a meal, my teenage daughter asked for a non alcoholic drink which I obliged and ordered at the bar and she accompanied me to the bar when we were served the bar man asked if I would like a glass, I asked my daughter in front of him if she would like one she replied no so she took the drink and sat down. Over an hour later the temporary manager came over and rudely said she ca t drink that it’s against the law and walked off. We continued our meal and around 30 minutes later she returned and said your all barred from here after this meal don’t return. Now firstly we were not aware of this policy, they clearly served me and was aware it was for my daughter and rudely told us that it’s not allowed and we are barred from their mistake. I have however contacted Wetherspoons and they are not interested in families being able to use the venue only people who wish to drink all day every day. Absolutely disgusting customer service and poor training given to the staff.

Visited at 8:20 to be told children aren’t allowed in after 9...

Went last Sunday was looking forward to a drink with the grandkids on the front in the sun but couldn’t get due to all the bicycles leant against all the tables

Bolsover was a bit disappointing for "Ye Olde Pubs". However this Wetherspoons was well appointed. The ladies room upstairs in a suite of rooms with tables and chairs! The food was the usual reliable standard. You can sit outside. It was interesting to note the "local old boys" were drinking here rather than in the rustic locals in the town centre.

Had a mid week breakfast at 9.30am. The small vegetarian breakfast with extra tomato half's was just right, washed down with 2 cups of decaf tea. Speedy delivery of food. Very tasty despite the vegetarian sausage being very hard to cut at the ends. Staff were pleasant.

What a great pub...loads of space inside and out. Staff really friendly. The view from the ladies window...WOW. The food was lovely and highly recommend as a night out

It’s an upmarket Wetherspoon’s, the weather was lovely so we sat outside, it adjacent to the car park but is fine, the food is excellent value for money

This modern Wetherspoons isn't the most attractive of their pubs I've been in but I had a couple of meals here and found it quite a reasonable place to eat. There was nothing really special about it and based on my visits it would justify somewhere between a '3' and a '4' rating. However the food was OK, the prices reasonable and I had no complaints so let's give it a '4' as it's probably the best choice in Bolsover.

Been to this ‘Spoons a few times. Called this morning for breakfast. Lovely light and airy pub with the feel of a local and nice to see families welcome with young children. Welcoming and happy smiling staff serving the drinks and food. Eggs benedict twice was the order of the day and very appetising it was too, on its prompt arrival at the table. Value for money 10/10 Well done “The Pillar”

Now I'm a huge weather spoons fan. I admire Tim Martin and love what he stands for and being coeliac I know I'm in safe hands when I eat there. I travel around the country alot and always eat at weather spoons I live in bolsover so do go there 3-5 times a year and have previously gave it a 5 star review on Google. But sadly today was a very bad experience and poor effort but the staff!

Went on the Tuesday steak night which included s drink, in fact all meals included a drink as well, so great value for four, cost under £50 including an extra bottle of Prosecco,wide choice of food and drink and real ales, lovely ambience and location would definitely return.

The food is good. It’s not always great but you get what you pay for. The staff are friendly and helpful.

You’d think a pub near Bolsover Castle would welcome dogs especially as the area is popular with dog walkers. This is just a Weatherspoons, nothing at all special

Disappointing visit to Wetherspoons. Failed to get the order correct, even though ordered on the app. Lacklustre staff and food to match. Could be so much better in such a great location, but I guess standards are so low because no nearby competition. Avoid

Stopped off as part of a day out at the castle. Food was prompt and service was good. We would come again.

Popped in early for standard breakfast, usually do spa.lane in town where standards are good. Was nice breakfast friendly staff so happy plus fab view of the castle

Regular visits to the pillar of rock, always a warm welcome by the staff, being greeted by friendly smiling staff is always appreciated and makes you want to return time after time, great value food and drinks and a really nice atmosphere, anyone who moans about the food need to go elsewhere and pay 3 times as much, beer and a meal for around £6

So we’ve been weekly regulars for some time now and other than minor hiccups that was resolved without delay, it’s been a relatively pleasant experience. However the attitude we was met with this morning means that our regular visit comes to an end.

It was unexpectedly very busy with many tables reserved. We managed to find a table for 4 but with 5 of us it was a bit of a squeeze. However the service was quick and friendly and the cooked breakfasts were hot and tasty. Shame one of the hot drinks machines was broken. The toilets were clean although not very nice to dry your hands on cold dryers.

Visited for the first time today to celebrate our granddaughters 18th birthday.

My wife and I had just visited Bolsover Castle on Thursday 14th and having noticed "Spoons" next door we decided to pop in for a drink before carrying on our journey up North. We had a gin & tonic plus a 125ml Merlot (okay) which was their usual good value at total £4.79.The bargirl was pleasant and with a smile.

Nice food, Vegan options as well, clean and friendly place to have rest after or before visiting castle

Mini fish and chips and mushy peas, for me jacket potato and chilli for the hubby , sat near the foid station ,could see all the food coming out , a fish and chips sat on the counter for 12 minutes, the duty manager was helping out in the kitchen , watched him had lemon and peas ,stuck back under counter again , husbands potato came out still waiting ,one if the bar staff asked us if we was dining tonight as we don't usually bother as they always seem to get order wrong or it's cold , we said yes but the fish had been there ages ,he went in the kitchen and asked for a fresh one. It cone out ,waitress launched it on my table and walked off ,served the table next to us , I said please can I have a knife and fork ,as not been given one ,she looked at me like a peice of sh*t,.the food was not good, next time we will walk to local chip shop on the way home.....

Usually an above average Wetherspoons delivering reliably standard grub & a well stocked bar. All at good prices.

popped in after a visit to Bolsover Castle. Hubby had beer but I only had coffee. Pleasant staff and food looked good but we had picnicked. The ladies toilets had great views and a seating area

The food isn't anything amazing, neither is the service. But it's a good enough Weatherspoons. The restaurant is clean and well positioned. You can easily order food and drink on the app, and the food is nice and warm when arrives.

Pillar of Rock in Bolsover was my favorite get together spot. The food was good, the drinks cold. On Saturday 09/02/2019 I took my friend and her daughter to have lunch. We all wanted to try something new, WHAT A BIG MISTAKE

Everything was spot on! From food, price, service and how quick the food came out too! Will definitely be going again soon!

Visited with a friend for lunch. Ordered via the app and drinks were delivered swiftly. Then came my lamb shank and my friends fish and chips. Both were large portions and equally delicious! We waited half hour or so then ordered desserts, again via the app. They were delivered quickly and were yummy!

Came in today with my 2year old and my mother, we came in at breakfast and there was a good choice of food on the menu, it was great value for money and tasted amazing. Will definitely be returning in the future.

A good place to meet up with friends whether it's fit a coffee or a meal. The staff are always friendly. The loos clean. The food is good value for money.

Change the fat or whatever you cook the chips, onion rings , etc in.. This is the worst Weatherspoons i have ever visited. Had to tick one star rating or it wont post. No star at all would have been my choice.

I sent my stake back 3 times 1st time it was well done, 2nd time it was raw 3rd time it was medium well done. I am not impressed to say the least... the staffs attitude is appalling and when I asked for a refund all I got was attitude was and thay only refunded half of what I payed for that dish. This is not the first time this has happend on my last visit the manager asked me "How would you like you pork cooked" because it was raw and I complained. The only food this place is capable of serving is food that goes "ding". Will not be returning.

We booked a table for 7 early Sunday afternoon. Only the soup was available from the Christmas starters menu. Not a good start. We then ordered main courses..these fortunately were available but we overheard shortly afterwards that they only had 4 Christmas dinners left. Before the mains arrived we then got asked if we would move tables as they had a party of 18 in and someone had messed up on the bookings. We said that we would if there could be some compensation in perhaps a free drink or dessert. This wasn’t possible apparently but we could have some more crackers on the new table. So we stayed put as it wasn’t really our problem. Then we ordered dessert after mains. Just about everything we asked for was unavailable and when the mallow dessert arrived it was half the size of the picture. When we asked they said oh we have run out of the biscuit part. So instead of telling us that was unavailable they put it out with no explanation hoping it wouldn’t be noticed that half of it was missing. It’s a shame as the food that was available was good just poor management if half the food isn’t available early on a Sunday. The staff were very helpful and apologetic but I get the impression whoever in charge isn’t doing their job very well at all.

We used the app and ordered drinks and food from this. Speedy service. The gourmet vegetable burger was tasty but didn't come with the pico de gallo as stated on the menu and only had a smudge of houmous. Bit disappointing. I let the lady know, who came to clear our plates, and she was very understanding and helpful. Hopefully next time the kitchen staff will get it right. My other half's pizza was a 7/10 and could have scored higher if there was more meat on it. (it was a spicy meat feast).

The restaurant was busy but we had good service and the meal of jacket potato’s was real delicious, The fish and chips looked delicious with a huge size fish. Definitely a place to go for a lunch time meal.

Ordered through the app so didn't have to leave the table and food was delivered quite quickly. Less than a fiver for a decent sized burger with good thick chips and a drink - bargain!

If you’re looking for a quick and cheap bite to eat, this is the place. You get what you pay for and if you are a seasoned Wetherspooner, you know what you’ll be getting. Nice location, friendly and quick service and a good selection of food and drinks.

Stopped in for dinner after a busy morning walking around the countryside with my little boy. The pub was refreshingly clean and well set out. The staff were very friendly and the food more than reasonable and very tasty. A real family friendly place.

Came here tonight with a group of friends for food. The waitresses were quick and lovely but the manager (who looked like) let the whole experience down. We did not know about the 9 o’clock, over 18 rule but as it hit 9, we were immediately asked for IDs while halfway through our meals. As were are all 17, she basically asked us all to rush our meals and leave, couldn’t we at least have time to finish? Anyways, she continued to tell colleagues about us girls and how we were not of age quite loud, loud enough for us to hear. This made us quite frustrated so we left. Awfully bad customer service from what looked like the manager, then continued to thank us on the way out.... makes sense.

Second visit here, the first just after opening and wasn't impressed with the food at all then, just pre heated plastic stuff.

Typical pub grub nicely cooked and presented. Premises clean and comfortable. Friendly atmosphere and car park next door.

Been before but it is one of my favourite Spoons, no loafers around, no smell of cigarettes around the doorways, and always somewhere to sit, food the same as all the others, but because it is quieter, the food is cooked as you order and you can tell, Definatley worth a visit.

Very good value, comprehensive menu with all the dreaded calories shown, good choice of cask beers and tasty food. This will be your best choice for lunch if you have just climbed all the steps in Bolsover Castle.

This is a fantastic Wetherspoons situated next to the most stunning of settings Bolsover castle the sunset is unbelievable we ate at 18:00 on a Saturday evening it was busy but very friendly atmosphere great choice of real ales plus a good gin selection if you visit the castle please visit

Nice pleasant pub not so nice meal, ordered Gammon, looked bland & not very appetizing, my partner ordered steak but said it was like shoe leather, An elderly lady asked about condiments but the waitress just pointed to the back & said they are down there I would have thought she would have offered to get them for her as it was not busy. Asked for Stella but none available. Better places to eat.

My husband and I are from Australia, we stumbled across this little gem by accident while visiting Bolsover Castle.

I enjoy eating in Wetherspoons restaurants when visiting Britain and this one is very nice, with an outdoor eating area. It is located almost next door to the spectacular Bolsover Castle. Wetherspoons are consistently good, with a wide ranging menu and very reasonable prices. They have recently introduced smaller servings, which suits many people.

By far the best place to eat in the area. No matter how busy it is (and some days it’s real busy!), we always find a table. Whoever is responsible for managing the demand and capacity, deserves a big hand of applause!

This is just the same as the many other Wetherspoons around. We stopped here after visiting Bolsover castle as its just outside it. Food was good and we used the app to order which made it nice a quick.

Met up here for a few beers with an old associate of mine. As is always, cheap beer and decent service. Can't just put my finger on it, but, not really my cup of tea. Probably prefer the old village type pub.

Great building with traditional Wetherspoons fayre. Always good food and cheap drinks. Bottomless coffee machine refills available.

Ate lunch, from extensive menu choices, which was served fairly promptly, though quite busy. There is an outside seating area and very spacious inside.

Just visited here for a coffee after visiting Bolsover Castle (right next door). Sat outside on patio - very pleasant. Inside, it seemed very clean and fairly new.

Always good at a Wetherspoons and this didn't disappoint friendly staff and good food miniumal waiting time.

Was looking forward to a nice fresh pizza. Unfortunately the staff leave it under the ‘warming’ plates so it was dried up. My pizza sat there for ten minutes before they brought it to me and it was lukewarm. On observation other dishes sat there for up to twenty minutes as they only appeared to deliver them to tables when they had a lot to take out at once.

Called recently during the afternoon and although it was busy there were enough tables for the four of us.I ordered fish and chips twice a mixed grill and a small portion of fish and chips.We did not have to wait long and when received it was of a good quality with reasonable portions.

Had breakfast here. It was ok. Porridge oats used very nice and of good quality. Honey was like syrup unfortunately and my toast was forgotten and had to ask for it. Like the unlimited hot drinks and chilled water. I suppose you get what you pay for!

We called for breakfast due to an invasion of kitchen fitters. We were not disappointed. Sue had the mushroom benedict & I had the traditional English with additional black pudding - plus as much tea or coffe as required. All for under £10! Well presented, clean, good service, & a comfortable place to relax. Toilets very well maintained & overall a good dining experience. Can recommend. Thank you to the helpful staff.

Visited on a busy Tuesday. The staff were friendly and food was delivered promptly. Chose a halloumi wrap which was nice and The chips were really good. Desert of Chocolate Sandwich/Ice Cream was nice too.

Walking in to find a table at 14:05, lots of tables had not been cleared and wiped down . Menu choice was good but some things we not available. Food was average .

First time visiting here with a friend and really enjoyed it. We downloaded the app to order online and paid by PayPal so never had to leave our table! We each had a breaded chicken burger with a side of coleslaw and a drink and it came to just over £12! How can they do that? The service was really quick too taking less than 10 minutes from placing the order. I expected a small portion and not much chicken but it was a very decent size and very tasty. The menu is large with many options so I'm sure we will be back to try something else!

Stopped by here while visiting the castle and found the staff to be helpful and great coffee. Weather was good so enjoyed sitting outside

What excellent value! This was my very first visit to a Weatherspoons for a meal and it was great. Location perfect, staff friendly, choice amazing and such excellent value! I’ll be back!

Arrived at 10am and plenty of tables available. Think we missed the morning rush and too early for the lunchtime crowd. We ordered via the app 2 traditional vegetarian breakfasts and pancakes with maple syrup. Plus two teas with free refills. Good value for money. Can't believe the amount of calories in the hot breakfasts though! The empty mugs were brought to our table and whilst I was waiting to use the hot drinks machine, our food arrived. By the time I'd done the teas, the food wasn't very hot. It would have been better to deliver the mugs sooner to allow for time in getting the drinks.
