We went for dinner and although the setting is imaginative and creative the dining room is dark. However, yet again extremely over familiar staff who have clearly not been schooled in how to look after guests. The food was actually disgusting. 3 out of 5 went for the signature fish of pork which was served with 70% lumps of fat (not crackling) my sardines were clearly not fresh. The best bit was the bread. Expensive piss take.

Expensive and not the best. Water is extra with your meal and it is tap water. The main courses come with one small amount of cabbage or seasonal veg. Side orders are extra and expensive

We've been to this restaurant and two other Pigs over a dozen times and have always had a fantastic experience. Unfortunately, this experience left a lot to be desired. The service was friendly and informed from the waitresses, but another member of staff less so. He challenged two of our group for ID's (one is 22 and the other 18), not a problem but we felt he was quite patronising to us in this instance. He then forgot to put through a cocktail but this was explained to us and comped - great service all round. The food - I had the coriander/carrot soup to start and it was by far the most bland soup I have ever eaten. No salt, no coriander flavour, it was quite brutally like baby food. The other starters were decent but we all felt they were slightly lacking in flavour and depth. Our mains arrived and my hake was completely overcooked, mushy and lacking in any flavour again. Tiny squares of dry black pudding and an entirely tasteless puree accompanied the hake. It was barely warm and it felt pretty clear that the kitchen were trying to get the food out as quickly as possible, compromising taste and care. Other mains included an excellent steak, a bland and quite dry pork, and an overly greasey and flavourless gnocchi. The sides were okay, but given the excellence (and the far from average prices) which we have associated with The Pig previously, we were really disappointed. It must be said the waitresses were good, but we had eaten all three courses in an hour and fifteen minutes, it really felt like everyone wanted us out of there. Fair enough, it was a Sunday night at 8pm, but when you're paying over £60 a head it left a really sour taste. When we left the table, nobody was anywhere to be seen to say thanks or goodbye, another basic thing that goes so far. We love the Pig, the food, the atmosphere, the emphasis on local ingredients and its cooking - but this experience was tired, rushed and the food was so far off what you'd hope and what we expect at a place that has been a favourite for many visits.

The signage to find access is somewhat poor. Having found where to park we walked across to the manor but there is again no signage on where to enter the building and we had to ask another guest. We were welcomed when we walked in and decided to go straight to our table. As a couple we were shown to one of the small round tables. There was a choice of a metal chair or a small wooden chair. I chose the wooden chair and my wife had the metal chair. I sat down and found the chair so terribly uncomfortable that I said to the staff member I couldn’t sit there in that seat. She offered me a choice of other seats but they are all similar. I’m afraid that’s where my enjoyment of our evening ended. I have never sat in a restaurant before with such uncomfortable seats. Can I suggest that the next Pig board meeting is held using the terrible seats that you are expecting customers to sit on whilst enjoying your food maybe then you will take action and do something about it. The tables was so small for 2 people that by the time we each had an oversized menu and a wine list there wasn’t room to move. I almost decided to leave before choosing from the menu as I have never experienced such discomfort in a restaurant before. I would like to say that there was nothing wrong with the food or the service but I am sorry to say I will never return as I prefer to be comfortable not crippled while eating in a high end restaurant.

Great food but a deliberately over complicated and misleading wine list. The mark up on some wine was over 400%. Shame as the rest of the experience was worthy of other positive reviews.

Are here for both dinner and the next morning for breakfast as staying at the hotel. Both meals were lovely. And the ambience relaxed and friendly. Our evening dinner was superb and being at The Pig, the obvious choice was pork for our mains! Desserts were wonderful too, particularly the mixed selection which I think was called Piggy Pieces. So much so that we even had to take a piggy bag away as we couldn’t finish them all Breakfast was af a good standard with a mix of freshly cooked and buffet options. Many of which were homemade. Staff super friendly and helpful too Would definitely return if in the area

Arriving at the outside it’s pretty underwhelming and you are not sure if what looks like a front door is the front door, however you turn the handle and push and all of a sudden you are in a charming candlelit room with the maitre d beckoning you in. What a start! You are led into a beautiful panelled dining room where each table has a large real (!) candle and the rest of the lighting is just perfect. The ‘piped’ music was eclectic and probably just right for the average age of the clientele. The ‘Inside 25’ menu is not huge but should suit all tastes. Conversely the wine list is humongous both in physical size and choice and you’re in danger of setting light to it on the candle, trying to sort it out! We went for a carafe of the ‘Pig Cut Red,’ a collaboration with a Tuscan vineyard, which was absolutely superb. All of the dishes we selected were outstanding, my particular favourite was the sardine starter and heritage tomatoes. Tobacco onions were innovative. Portions were generous. What an amazing evening gazing across at my loved one in the candlelight. Restaurant was busy and so pre-booking is advisable. We’ll be back!

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves for our anniversary dinner whilst staying in the Harlyn Bay area for a holiday. As part of the sign up they ask if it is an occasion, we ticked anniversary and only a table for 2, so it doesn't take a genius to work out it might be a slightly romantic meal. We were shown to a table in a room full of large parties of mixed age families, with children running in and out. The noise level was unbelievable, with disco music playing quite loudly, so conversation was difficult. We ordered our food and drinks and can only say how disappointed we were with the food in general. Not at all what we were expecting from the reviews. We also ordered a carafe of wine each. The service was OK, not great, again not what we had anticipated. After our meal we asked to be able to finish our drinks in one of the lounges. We finally found one and had to ask for the music to be turned down, even in a room that was empty it felt like a disco. I am sure there must be some quieter dinning rooms available and you would think a little thought would have gone into the booking. All in all we came away, having expected a fabulous evening together, disappointed and feeling as we had certainly not had value for money and it put a huge damper on our 42nd anniversary. We are now very reluctant to try other Pig restaurants if this is the standard.

We visited with our dog and 11 week old baby and were told our dog was their first since they started allowing them. I was a bit worried we might get a sub par room as they made sure we had looked over their dog rules so many times, but it was actually quite the opposite. We were given a lovely terrace room which was really nice and easy in terms of access with the dog and the baby, they had left a big crate for him to sit in if we left him in the room and a treat with a message on it. The staff all seemed really excited about having the dog there and were very welcoming and friendly. I can’t fault the facilities or room at all, wonderfully decorated and exactly what you would expect from a Pig hotel. My only suggestion would be moving the mini bar snacks out of the bottom drawer when you have dogs staying. Thankfully I spotted them but there is a lot of chocolate in there and I worry someone might return to a very unwell dog if they leave the room without realising. We ate at the lobster shed and the food was really tasty, great atmosphere and polite staff. Exactly what we wanted from our stay & really enjoyable.

The food was lovely, the service was spot on, the atmosphere was slightly lacking though. It also seemed that a majority of the desserts had alcohol in them, so not much choice for people who don’t drink alcohol for reasons of faith, recovery or allergies.

Good in parts! We had lunch in the Lobster Shed on a sunny day in July. Service was excellent. My partner had the pork chop with gooseberries, which for inexplicable reasons had mint sauce all over it? (They offered a free desert which was a nice but unremarkable) The steak was tasty but over done. No vegetables served even as an extra? Our dining companions were "down from London" in their huge electric cars and Range Rovers!

The staff's rudeness and lack of hospitality set a negative tone for the entire evening. Despite our reservation for 8 pm, we were denied a pre-dinner drink due to "table timings," even though no one was scheduled to occupy our table afterwards. This unnecessary restriction left us feeling unwelcome and unappreciated right from the start. The steak, a dish you would expect a place like this to excel at, was a major disappointment. All the steaks were overcooked and made from poor quality meat, when we sent one back it came back uncooked - all this resulted in a lackluster dining experience that did not justify the prices on the menu. It was my partner's 40th birthday, a detail I had included in the reservation notes, yet there was no effort made to acknowledge this special occasion. The combination of rude staff, subpar food, lack of customer service, and high prices left us deeply disappointed. I would not recommend here to anyone seeking a pleasant dining experience.

Image over substance, lovely location - building, interior of house and amazing vegetable garden, however primarily you come for the food. Food, good in places but average in others and small portions. Really expected some fresh garden produce to be evident somewhere after all the strap line is all about food to plate. Cannot understand why when lots of seasonal veg are just ready for harvesting are not being used, very few herbs and veg used in the dishes. It was a Monday eve so maybe nothing is picked out of the veg garden on Mondays? We could see them all in the beautiful orderly veg garden. My daughter had a tasteless risotto served on a flat plate. The waitress staff were lovely.

How disappointing was the dining experience. Although the building and the decor is world class the food and kitchen service was well below standard. There was a rush with getting the appetisers out soon after the bread arrived and before we had chance to have a drink of wine. The most awful part of the meal was being able to see into the kitchen. One chef heavily tattooed and wear a scarf around his had spent a lot of time typing on his phone between plating food. As we know a mobile phone is one of the most unhygienic items we posses. Along with who appeared to be the head chef, they both picked up food with their fingers and ate it at the same time as preparing food and wiped their sweaty faces with bare hands . This is not what I would expect in a restaurant. Some dishes were oversalted also. Normally I would complain on the day but I didn’t want to spoil a special family meal.

Little treat today whilst on holiday in Newquay - booked lunch at The Pig. Dined in the restaurant, in the outdoor area (shaded, so didn't singe in the hot sun). Absolutely loved the building....it's a history buff's dream. Even sitting with a quick drink in the garden is amazing - you can imagine being there 400 years ago! Seriously, definitely a place to visit. And the food was delicious. We had Pork Bites (in a silky, sticky sauce), Pork Crackling (you could hear another guest crunching theirs, from 15 feet away...CRUNCHY & fabulous). We also went for Organic Chicken Breast, and Middle White Pork Loin. Service was impeccable and staff were very attentive. The emphasis here is on pleasure, relaxation and enjoyment of the surroundings. Add it to your wish-list 😊

We had a wonderful evening at the Pig. Whilst the restaurant was very busy (it was the Christmas holidays) the staff were friendly and attentive. It's a superb building, stylish decor, cosy corners, antique and period furniture give this grand house a homely and welcoming vibe. We love the ethos of the 25 mile menu, all the produce for the hotel is sourced locally and some grown on site at other times of the year. The menu has a map of where all the items are sourced so the menu is heavy on really fresh produce and seasonal with a good inclusion of vegetarian dishes. We enjoyed Sardines, cerviche of mackerel and fresh crab toast for starter and for mains hake, pork chop and butternut squash with italian beans all delicious. The wine menu is daunting and suits the wine buffs! We look forward to our next visit and can't wait to try other Pigs!

Visited The Pig in April with 3 friends for dinner. We couldn't believe the cost for two courses and two good bottles of wine came to £400. Admittedly food quality was good -as we would expect for £100 a head. However the wine was served very unprofessionly. We were served by a pleasant young lady who was sporting two sommelier badges. We were therefore surprised when the second bottle of wine was delivered already opened before bringing it to the table and then poured into our existing glasses with no offer to try the new bottle. What if it had been corked? We were told by the sommelier that she had sniffed it before bringing it out. At £59 a bottle, this was just not good enough. The pig is certainly far below the standard we would have expected at a £100 a head restaurant.

Firstly, I’d like to say the location, decor and ambience of the hotel was fantastic. We stayed in a snug with terrace for just one night and although the room was quite tight to manoeuvre around, the bed was comfortable, the monsoon shower was amazing and the tea and coffee making facilities were very good. We ate in the restaurant at 8.30pm and that’s when things became quite disappointing. Our food came out extremely quickly after ordering and was seriously lacking flavour and seasoning. My wife had mullet and I had the pigeon breasts. When we got back to our room the aircon was making a gurgling noise like it had a babbling brook running through it. It stopped after a few minutes and we went to bed, but it re-occurred a number of times during the night waking us up each time. Breakfast was lovely and the staff were friendly and attentive it was just a shame the very bland food and the problem with the aircon spoiled our stay.

Set in a lovely old property, when we finally found the hotel from the car park (a few signs would have been useful). We were welcomed and had pre dinner drinks in one of the lounges. The dining room was busy. On booking I requested the Autumn lunch menu but we were never given the menu for this option, even though my booking said we had. We were offered the full menu, which was much mor expensive. There was a good variety of dishes to suit all requirements. I had the roast onion squash which was lovely, although it was a large amount of squash and not a lot else. The pork chop was beautifully cooked and the jus and veg lovely, but I had to order a side of fires or that was all that would have been on the plate. Dessert was a chocolate mousse with boozy berries and was lovely. The others had a variety of dishes all very nice but not exceptional for the price. The wines were very pricey too. Overall we enjoyed the meal, but we weren't blown away. The staff were lovely and we weren't rushed at all.

Once you have found the Lobster Shed, as the signage down to it is pretty poor, it’s certainly different. It resembles ‘glamping’ fine dining! Not sure if it was just our menu, the primal paper or in trying to stay carbon neutral they are saving on printing ink, but you could hardly read it, so assistance was required. However it is quite innovative and ok as long as you like crab or lobster, there are other options but not many. We both chose the Rarebit which was very good. For dessert we shared a Knickerbocker Glory which again was splendid. It was nice to see wine being offered by 0.5 litre carafe and we thoroughly enjoyed the Tinta Roriz/Rufete red. The toilets have been designed to look like your grandparents privy at the end of the garden albeit with modern sanitary ware. The Lobster Shack is not open all 12 months of the year.

Lovely setting as you would expect at the Pig but the staff was pretentious despite the restaurant being very quiet and the food was massively overpriced for what was a very average meal. Book the Journeyman and Old Mill Bistro instead!

We loved the cozy, comfortable, and clean atmosphere. The food was delicious. We had the Naan pizza appetizer, roast pork with brandied apples, and the rice bowl. We paired it with cider. It was wonderful. The owner was friendly and very pleasant and visited each table. We really enjoyed our 38th anniversary. Thanks for the wonderful night.
