Good location, decent drinks and pleasant staff. A music quiz on Thursday is good fun. But unfortunately we were woken at about 5am to the sound of smashing glass as the rubbish was collected, twice Then at 630 the building shook as what sounded like beer kegs being loaded and unloaded We stayed in room 15 which is at the top and front of the building. Maybe a room further back of the property would solve the noise issues

Fabulous meal, at a relatively quiet midweek afternoon. service was great, and Chester is a beautiful place to visit. Lost a star for parking, as not unsurprisingly expensive! Park in Tesco Superstore and 7min walk through the Cathedral Park. Buy £15 worth of Tesco goods on your return to the car, and your parking is free ( just plan your weekly shop accordingly)!

Situated right in the heart of Chester, it was great to come back to the city after spending so long there for University. It's just as I remembered it, got a good choice of craft beer, good menu, good quality of food and friendly staff to accompany a cosy traditional pub atmosphere. Question though: why not provide your customers with full bottles of sauce, rather than miniature bowls that last your tomato sauce enthusiast daughter 2mins 😂 Other than that, please visit, it embodies what an English pub is and should be, and embodies what the Chester specific aesthetic pub is.

Enjoyed a lunch at the Pied Bull on a recent day trip. A former coaching inn (and the oldest in Chester), its bar and dining areas are just what you'd expect in a pub with such a long history: dark wood panelling, oak beams, an original sandstone fireplace, and lots of atmosphere. There's a nice outside terrace at the back. Toilets are downstairs, accessible and clean. I found a table in the cosy dining area close to the bar. The staff were courteous and efficient, and I was served quickly. Beer is brewed on site, and there was also a good choice of wine, gin and other drinks. Had a glass of Merlot with my meal, and it was very good. They serve not only classic British pub food, such as steaks, burgers, and fish and chips, but also dishes with a more modern twist, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and lighter meals too. I opted for the traditional homemade steak and ale pie, served on a bed of kale, with hand-cut chips and beef dripping gravy. The pie was hot and well cooked, with big lean chunks of beef and no gristle. Lovely chips, not greasy at all! Treated myself to an Eton Mess with morello cherries and chocolate sauce for afters, and it was scrumptious! The latte came with a little biscuit. The lunch wasn't cheap, but it was what you would expect to pay given the high quality of the food and the location right in the centre of Chester, conveniently close to the cathedral, city walls, and shops. Would definitely recommend!

I can't see why anyone would want to pay £5.80 for a pint in this pub as myself and friends did today. The surroundings are not unpleasant but the lack of punters, especially locals, speaks volumes. Total profiteering. I defy the owners to give me a breakdown of their costs per pint v the profit per pint they makem Avoid. Borderline theft.

Awful food. The chips looked, felt and tasted like they were the previous days leftovers re-fried, possibly even from the day before that! M partner had Steak which was okay, my son and I had the Hunters chicken, the cheese & bacon were etremely salty, I've had cheese and bacon all over the wold in my 59 years, from the US to China, from Nigeria to Poland.. this was the worst. My hunters chicken was seared on the outside but tender enough in the middle..but it was bland. My son couldnt finish his Hunter's chicken it looked like it had been in the ovens at Auschwitz. I finished it off and regretted it half an hour later...made me feel sick. Furthermore the staff on the whole were not very friendly. Don't eat here

Bella esperienza

We spent our first night in the UK here, and it was great. Our room was tiny, but quaint and comfortable. Local beer is what we wanted and that's what we got. Dinner was a steak pie for me and a sausage dish for my husband. Both were delicious. Breakfast the next morning was a full English, and we didn't need to eat again until dinner time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

A wonderful olde world pub with luxurious accommodation. We stayed here overnight and it was a stay that did not disappoint. The staff were exemplary and gave excellent customer service. Room 19 was luxuriously appointed and extremely comfortable and quiet. We ate out at a local tapas bar on the evening but did have 2 deserts at the Pied Bull when we returned, which were excellent. We also sampled a very generous full English breakfast on the following morning, which was delicious and ample. I have no hesitation in recommending this venue in central Chester, there are several places to park nearby too. We will definitely return.

First of all we'd like to say the staff and bar area were fab. We were totally let down by our room. We stayed in room 22 on ground floor. The room.was small, but we could have coped with that except for the fact that there was no storage for clothes, unless you call a cupboard with 4 hangers storage space Then there was the fact that the heating was on and we were unable to switch it off. That's fine we thought we'd open the window. Then the realisation that the room backed onto some yard that was used as a smoking area, so we either had to put up with the heat, or the stench of stale cigarettes, weed and rubbish from the bins. Made for a great 3 nights Even better was the early morning wake up Monday morning when someone was moving the bins to, we assumed, empty them. But it was 6.20 so we got up breathed in the stench of stale smoke and made ourselves a cuppa. At least we thought we'd get a lie in the following day if the bins had been collected on the Monday We went about our day and returned to the pub so we could get changed to go for a meal we had booked only to find nobody had bothered doing the room. The bins hadn't been emptied the tea and coffee tray hadn't been replenished and what made it worse was that as we were changing we could hear someone cleaning the next room which was under renovation and not occupied. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a "Please make up room" sign for door. And a Do Not Disturb one whilst you are at it Anyway we had a fantastic meal, came back to room and crashed out for a well earned lay in .. we'll until 4.45am when the security lights in yard came on and the banging and crashing of the bins being moved again started We couldn't even make ourselves a cuppa as nobody had bothered with our room that day Chester you was fantastic and myself and my wife will return. But will certainly stay elsewhere... somewhere where you haven't got to choose between cigarettes and weed over staying cool and comfortable

If there's one pub I know I'm going to visit on any trip to Chester I take its The Pied Bull Pub,been here before on many occasions over the years, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit to here. A great looking pub, a former coaching house and reputedly the oldest pub in Chester, interior is superb, dark wood features abound throughout this pub, exposed brickwork, a solid wood serving bar dominates the main room, pubby decor and furnishings and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub both inside and outside in their beer garden out back ,its also a microbrewery with a great range of real ale's on offer, its just a really good pub to unwind in. My twin brother and I were here on a bitterly cold February afternoon, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, we had a study of their real ale's which I must say I was impressed with, in the end we both opted to have a pale ale each, these were served in pristine condition, we chilled out, warmed up and planned out the day ahead while sipping our pale ale's. My pale ale was really good, a crisp, well balanced pale ale, hints of toffee, a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a smooth finish, a classic British pale ale served in a classic British pub, its hardly surprising that this pub is so popular with real ale's of this quality. We both really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to The Pied Bull Pub we had a great time. The Pied Bull Pub is easy to locate along Northgate Street, a street and area teeming with pubs, bars, cafe's and restaurants and some amazing architecture and a major tourist destination. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, open from midday. A wonderful pub,one I highly recommend you visit if you're in the area or planning a trip to Chester.

On Northgate street there's an historic pub and hotel that offer's an excellent range of food and drinks and its own beers and first class accommodation.Dating from 1155'this ancient coaching inn is housed in a unique building that was called Bull's Mansion. The interior of the Pied Bull is amazing with many interesting fixture's and feature's like its Jacobean panelling and beams. There's a staircase that dates from 1535 and many more interesting item's throughout the pub and hotel's interior'far to many to put on a review of this size. This brilliant pub was one of the highlight's of our trip to Chester as it has an excellent brewery with superb beers. We visited here early in the afternoon and it was very busy which is the norm in here but we didn't wait to long to get served. When we visited here we had a good selection of there cask ales which were perfectly served and were very well priced. It's a superb pub and a very historic pub in a superb area of Chester that offer superb beers and good food and accommodation and its also a pub thats reputably haunted which adds a bit of spice to the Pied Bull.If your ever in Chester give this pub a try you won't be disappointed. The hotel is in a really good position for all shops bars and the Christmas market. However the rooms that are advertised on booking.com are anything like the photographs, we booked a superior room and it was worse than what a normal double room looks like, we had room 26 which is at the front, it was also very noisy, it was like sleeping in a tent, the walls and windows did not keep out any noise at all. I think it is really unfair to be advertising something that you don’t get.

Visited the Pied Bull today with my Mum for a spot of lunch admist the bustle of Christmas and I'm so glad we came. We arrived early and chanced our arm we could get a table and Kerry was very accommodating. We enjoyed a lovely shandy and spritzer, the Social Bull Platter was wonderful. We also had the black pudding bon bons which were sooo good. We just had the loveliest time. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, Kerry chatted to us a little about the fact I'd said I have an allergy so she'd clearly taken the time to be careful around it for which I'm very grateful. The decorations and how cosy it was just topped it off. All in all a 10/10 visit. We'll be back!

Went to the Pied Bull at about 16:30, the pub was very busy and took a while to be served. Me and my wife ordered the rump steak panini when it arrived, the coleslaw wasn’t good & looked like an ice cream scoop had been used to serve it. Unfortunately we didn’t actually get there but were charged £165 for the night anyway. We were due to stay for our anniversary but my husband’s mum was moved to end of life care so had to cancel. Sadly for us, we missed the 48 hour notice by 2 hours - we phoned as soon as we knew but our request to move the booking was flatly refused and we were told we would be charged regardless, which we were. My mother-in-law passed away shortly afterwards and I can honestly say, the lack of compassion, understanding and flexibility was astounding. We go to Chester every year for our anniversary but won’t ever book here again. We chose the Loaded Nachos, to share, as a starter. It was very reasonably priced and packed full of flavour with just the right amount of 'kick'. My wife chose the sweet potato and chickpea curry for her main whilst I had the Rump Steak. Whilst the location was good this hotel was very poor. We upgraded to a premier room which was very below standard. The shower was ok but we were only given two small bath towels, no hand towels. The toiletries were minimal to say the least and the toilet tissue was so thin…….. the room itself was very sparse with nowhere to put your case and no drawer space. Now to the bed! This was a metal framed bed with a sheet of plywood as the base to put the mattress on. The mattress itself was lumpy and most uncomfortable. As for the bedding the duvet and pillows had seen better days and were certainly not hotel grade standards! After a very bad nights sleep we ventured to breakfast to find very little choice. Basically it was a full English with tea/coffee a very small selection of cereals and long life orange juice. Overall it was a shambles! Everything was cheap and tatty, certainly not worth the £159 we paid for a night there Won’t be going back!

Stayed in this lovely historic pub many times. Cannot fault the rooms. ( some rooms very noisy, but its slap bang in the middle of a city) stairs like north face of the Iger!! Pick a lower floor room, but you will have to put up with the noise. Beer good, although last time a pint had gone off. Good enough choice. Pub great inside. Food- had a three course meal here, food was good not anymore. Starter stone cold cheese croquettes zero taste. Main- fish & chips, small portions all frozen food straight out the deep freeze. No option of cod, just cheaper variant. Just about warm. Tasteless. Even the lemon slice was small. Desert- lemon tart, small little filling ,again tasteless. Service quick. Be honest, it’s a fancy pub menu designed to sucker in passers by!! With fancy prices for poor quality food. Bellow school dinner quality. A pricy mistake I won’t make again. Needs a radical change. Staff don’t have the confidence to ask if any of the meal was good or not. I see why! Very disappointed ☹️ Will be amazed if get any feedback on this platform, as they don’t seem to think the customer is important enough to respond to reviews.

Really beautiful hotel and pub. The atmosphere of the pub was nice, and the amaretto sours were yummy. Staff were all friendly and helpful.

Had a lovely short stay at The Pied Bull; rooms are above what you'd expect in an 800 y/o building, with excellent showers etc. Staff are wonderful and accomodating. The food is a little pricey, but beautifully prepared and presented. We would strongly recommend The Pied Bull, just don't expect to park nearby!

Our room was very dated and therefore did not feel particularly clean. The bathroom was fine but the bed itself was appalling - a flimsy metal frame topped with a most uncomfortable flimsy mattres. The food was clearly all reheated from frozen despite the fancy-sounding and limited menu albeit it was very well presented. Breakfast was very minimalist with a very poor selection of cereals, no fruit, no choice of milks, long life orange juice and reheated ingredients. We were told one morning that we couldn’t have a poached egg because there was “something wrong with the pan” and we would have to wait 20 minutes - presumably whilst the bought-in poached eggs defrosted. Towels were too small and only one hand-towel was provided for two people. Toiletries were not replenished daily despite them having been used and one day we were left without one of our towels. The home-brewed beer was excellent. Staff were all polite and helpful. This place is overpriced at almost £150 per night for a standard double including breakfast.

Not stayed but had food and drinks. Steak pie for myself. Had to send green beans back as microwaved to long and was not able to bite through them, second lot was good. Pie was nice but small, also hotter on one side than other, clearly microwaved. Chips very good. Partner had hunters chicken, again microwaved but chips good. Not full chicken breast. Chose this place as it was offering quality over others nearby but sadly hardly better than sizzler pub chain with a big mark up on price. Definitely avoid and find something else.

Great historic pub in the town center of Chester. They do their own ales and even brew their own lager - the ones I tried were nice. Good selection. Some classic pub food options available - more of a well done classic Pub than a gastro pub. The food is nice, without having to stick bananas and wasabi in the tartar sauce. Good pub food done well, not pretending to be anything it isn't. Simple kids menu with good options - kids quite happy. Folks working there are really nice and friendly, and genuinely appear to enjoy being there. Overall a good dinner in a good atmosphere.

Booked at the last minute, got a great rate on a double room in the coach house at the back of the pub (booked direct). The room was lovely and clean, had everything we needed, good shower, ironing board and iron, hairdryer, tea and coffee. Nicely decorated. Great location right near the market and town hall. Staff were lovely and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

Beer tasting experience. Head brewer Richard was very knowledgeable and clearly talented in his field as the beers were all excellent.

Lovely pub with a garden front and rear in the sun. Lots to choose from on the menu. Myself and friends all had the same meal which was ceasar salad with chicken and a side of fries. There was plenty of chicken and the ceasar sauce was delicious. The croutons were a bit soggy and could have been crunchier, but I would order this again. We had a bottle of Rose between us. The staff were lovely and very friendly. Dogs are welcome. There is a car park.

We're not especially fans of American cuisine but as Sticky Walnut were doing it for their set menu this month we decided to give it another chance and expand our taste. It's still not my favourite but the frickles (deep fried, very lightly tempura battered pickles), barbequed Boston beans, and fried chicken with collared greens were all raised to level well beyond the norm. Very unusually for me, the puddings were the standout course; New York cheesecake was delicious, and Honeycomb ice cream served in a chilled glass with cracking good solidified chocolate sauce, absolutely fantastic. Service was lovely, very friendly and charming. Excellent value, £23 each for all three courses. I don't think you can do better in Chester.

We had a good meal at the bridge cafe full English and a chilli con carne meal. The quality of food was good in particular the chilli was very flavoursome. The portion sizes were generous. I was happy to pass my comments on how pleased I was with our meals before leaving. It's a popular cafe, the staff were friendly but very busy. I would have given 5 stars, but the wait for drinks was quite long. To create a better ambience, I'd change the layout to allow the flow of staff passing the queue.
