Unfortunately we didn’t actually get there but were charged £165 for the night anyway. We were due to stay for our anniversary but my husband’s mum was moved to end of life care so had to cancel. Sadly for us, we missed the 48 hour notice by 2 hours - we phoned as soon as we knew but our request to move the booking was flatly refused and we were told we would be charged regardless, which we were. My mother-in-law passed away shortly afterwards and I can honestly say, the lack of compassion, understanding and flexibility was astounding. We go to Chester every year for our anniversary but won’t ever book here again. I understand that business is business but under circumstances like this, there really is no excuse for such a heartless way to run it. One star because I had to to enable the review to be submitted.

Only had food here. The food was ok but very basic .. I had Hunters chicken with jacket potato .. I can't understand why, as a business, they can't add a small side salad or some veg to pretty the dish up Husband and the steak and ale pie and the "buttered veg" was about 4 green beans, so it was a bit of a letdown for the food .. flavours were nice but wouldn't go back for food in there again .. we like the pub itself, service is always warm & welcoming and wouldn't hesitate to call in for a drink .. It's especially lovely Christmas time in there if you're ever there for the Christmas markets.

We visited The Pied Bull last week after hearing good things about their menu and were not disappointed - staff were attentive, the food delicious and the venue full of character. We chose the Loaded Nachos, to share, as a starter. It was very reasonably priced and packed full of flavour with just the right amount of 'kick'. My wife chose the sweet potato and chickpea curry for her main whilst I had the Rump Steak. The curry had plenty of sweet potato chunks in (something other places seem to scrimp on) and my steak was cooked to perfection - I could have eaten it twice over! Would highly recommend a visit.

Whilst the location was good this hotel was very poor. We upgraded to a premier room which was very below standard. The shower was ok but we were only given two small bath towels, no hand towels. The toiletries were minimal to say the least and the toilet tissue was so thin…….. the room itself was very sparse with nowhere to put your case and no drawer space. Now to the bed! This was a metal framed bed with a sheet of plywood as the base to put the mattress on. The mattress itself was lumpy and most uncomfortable. As for the bedding the duvet and pillows had seen better days and were certainly not hotel grade standards! After a very bad nights sleep we ventured to breakfast to find very little choice. Basically it was a full English with tea/coffee a very small selection of cereals and long life orange juice. Overall it was a shambles! Everything was cheap and tatty, certainly not worth the £159 we paid for a night there Won’t be going back!

It's my favourite place in Chester. Stayed several times, always in the old pub part. It's such a historic building with so much history. However the rooms are so modern, stylish and comfortable. Breakfast is always welcome after a night out in Chester and never disappoints.

Very good place to stay. Downstairs pub for breakfast and a crisp pint in the evening after a long day. Room was nice and clean with new furniture and bathroom. Bed was firm enough. Disadvantage was thin walls, if you have a couple arguing next door when you are trying to sleep, it is annoying to hear. Overall it was good and I would come back.

Went on the micro brewery tour. Very informative hour, during which the different ingredients and processes were explained by Richard the brewer. His passion and enthusiasm for his job really came through. Not being a beer drinker I was unsure if I would enjoy it but I did. We were given 3 different brews to try afterwards. Met a lovely couple who were on the tour with us. All in all, a very good experience.

Stayed in this lovely historic pub many times. Cannot fault the rooms. ( some rooms very noisy, but its slap bang in the middle of a city) stairs like north face of the Iger!! Pick a lower floor room, but you will have to put up with the noise. Beer good, although last time a pint had gone off. Good enough choice. Pub great inside. Food- had a three course meal here, food was good not anymore. Starter stone cold cheese croquettes zero taste. Main- fish & chips, small portions all frozen food straight out the deep freeze. No option of cod, just cheaper variant. Just about warm. Tasteless. Even the lemon slice was small. Desert- lemon tart, small little filling ,again tasteless. Service quick. Be honest, it’s a fancy pub menu designed to sucker in passers by!! With fancy prices for poor quality food. Bellow school dinner quality. A pricy mistake I won’t make again. Needs a radical change. Staff don’t have the confidence to ask if any of the meal was good or not. I see why! Very disappointed ☹️ Will be amazed if get any feedback on this platform, as they don’t seem to think the customer is important enough to respond to reviews.

Absolutely the WORST NIGHTS SLEEP I've ever ever had, felt like my ceiling was going to come in from the elephant who was staying above me, obviously weak floorboards in an ageing hotel, he decided to prance around at 6am, we were woke at 7am by someone on the restaurant who was only able to communicate via shouting his every word, I think this was a member of staff though I'm unsure, would've been a nice night in a lovely old building if not for those issues, we went home for a good sleep, left our key at reception as there was NO ONE AROUND AT ALL, shame on you, this review could have been slightly better !!!!!

Our room was very dated and therefore did not feel particularly clean. The bathroom was fine but the bed itself was appalling - a flimsy metal frame topped with a most uncomfortable flimsy mattres. The food was clearly all reheated from frozen despite the fancy-sounding and limited menu albeit it was very well presented. Breakfast was very minimalist with a very poor selection of cereals, no fruit, no choice of milks, long life orange juice and reheated ingredients. We were told one morning that we couldn’t have a poached egg because there was “something wrong with the pan” and we would have to wait 20 minutes - presumably whilst the bought-in poached eggs defrosted. Towels were too small and only one hand-towel was provided for two people. Toiletries were not replenished daily despite them having been used and one day we were left without one of our towels. The home-brewed beer was excellent. Staff were all polite and helpful. This place is overpriced at almost £150 per night for a standard double including breakfast.

Great historic pub in the town center of Chester. They do their own ales and even brew their own lager - the ones I tried were nice. Good selection. Some classic pub food options available - more of a well done classic Pub than a gastro pub. The food is nice, without having to stick bananas and wasabi in the tartar sauce. Good pub food done well, not pretending to be anything it isn't. Simple kids menu with good options - kids quite happy. Folks working there are really nice and friendly, and genuinely appear to enjoy being there. Overall a good dinner in a good atmosphere.

Think they were only nice ones in chester as we went out in the night people are so rude in chester night life and other bars and clubs . the staff in other bars and pubs are rude even other customers are. we just felt uncomfortable and it wasn't worth the price of drinks it was expensive night . This pub/hotel trades on the history of the building. That might be enough for walking #Chester's walls, but it's totally inadequate for somewhere supposedly providing a service - it feels cold, sterile and uncaring. Often no staff behind the bar and lazy, care-less service when they are. The very definition of a tourist trap. They've just had a revamp? Not where it matters.

No light above dressing table, one small shelf with kettle and cups on, no room for anything else. They definitely need secondary double glazing putting in to ensure a good nights sleep for guests. My mum treated myself and my sister to a night away at The Pied Bull last night. To say we was all pleasantly surprised, would be an understatement. The hospitality that the staff shown us was out of this world, everyone was so warm and welcoming. The pub itself is extremely cosy and the prices are not as high as other places in Chester. Absolutely spotless, so clean, so fresh. The accommodation, we stayed in room 15, the family room, it was beautiful. We all felt as though it was our home away from home. Cosy, spotlessly clean, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was heavenly. Our only wish was that we had of stayed for a couple of nights not just the one. The stairs are very old, and a bit warped but you are warned about them. It was a little noisy outside come midnight with the passing students, but it soon went quiet. We stayed a couple of nights in room number 9. The Inn is situated in an old building and it's full of charm and character. Sure, the walls may be thin and it might not be as soundproof as more modern structures, but it has such a warm and cozy feeling that you can easily forgive it for being a bit loud at times. The staff was professional, kind and happy to help in case of need. Food was a pleasant surprise as well. We're not from the UK and really didn't know what to expect (I'm also Italian and we can be snobbish when it comes to food; bad habits, I know). The menu had a good range of options, including vegetarian ones, and was honestly really, really good. Paired with the interesting beer selection it made us very happy. There is something special about having a good meal in such and old and charming place, it just adds to the overall experience. Service was fast and even the food presentation was a treat.

Came here for a spontaneous weekend away as we were booking last minute there wasn’t much available on Booking.com. Took the chance on the Pied Bull but was disappointed with the experience. The room price was £160 for a night which I would consider above average, so you expect to get a nice room. We were placed in one of the cottages round the back. The room itself was clean but that’s the only compliment I could give it. It was extremely cramped with just enough room to walk round the bed. The walls were so thin you could hear peoples conversations in the rooms next door. You could even hear them going to the toilet. There was no storage space for suitcases and clothes so these were just left on the floor. Would not stay here again, if I had the choice I would spend a lot less and get a cheaper room at a premier inn. At least here you would have your own space.

We visited Chester this week and due to the terrible weather, went into the nearest pub. The menu looked ok with high prices so just ordered starters. I had haggis bonbons which where tiny for price and clearly tinned stuff from Tesco. My friend had ham hock which was tasty but again, the piccalilli was from Tesco. The pub looked lovely but we won't be returning

Beautiful food and their own in-house brewed ale is great! The place was very busy. Highly recommended

Stopped here for dinner after a walk around the Christmas markets, we had the ham hock terrine and the haggis bon bons to start, they were phenomenal and set our hopes high for the main course, which didn't disappoint. The beef featherblade and steak pie were perfect! We will definitely stop by, next time we're in the area

We came here for our annual staff night out. The place was decorated beautifully. We were quickly shown to our table and ordered our drinks. When the drinks arrived, our waiter asked if we were ready for our food (we had pre-ordered). Despite how busy it was, our food arrived promptly and we honestly could not fault it! A great experience from start to finish and we look forward to returning next year

Both myself and my hubby was out for our Christmas meal treat to ourselves, got to say the female staff were lovely but when the food arrived the chips were far from warm and the steak pie had more veg in it and the 4 pieces of meat were tough. The Christmas decorations were beautiful but to be honest the meal was a waste of mone.

We stayed here on Sunday evening following a visit to Chester Christmas markets. Room was average but we got a deal on Booking.com for £57.12 room only so we were not expecting much. Worst nigh I think we have every had in a hotel. OK the room decor was poor with a hole in the wall, no chair in the room or anywhere to put suitcase other than the floor but bathroom was modern. However, the property has single old glazing so the room was noisy from the street, we could here the person in the next room coughing and having a shower, we could here the room above us with squeaky floor boards. The pub glass bins were empties very loudly around 3am. We did not stay for breakfast as very expensive at £16.95 each. Check in staff just not interested in offering even a smile and same a check out. If it was free we would not stay again!! We were meant to be on a upgrade luxury double room - I would not even grade this as 2 stars, so many other nice hotels we have stayed at in Chester

We ended up at the Pied Bull for a late afternoon Sunday lunch having failed to book our chosen restaurant who were full and not wanting to venture far in the rain. We all enjoyed our Sunday lunches with big portions and good service.

Don't know if this hotel has changed hands but not as nice as previous visits. The beer was expensive and my wife's mature cheddar and pickle sandwich was greatly overpriced as it consisted of processed cheese slices. When mentioned to the waiter he was not interested. Very quiet for a lunchtime used to be quite busy.

Booked a night here as we were visiting Chester to go to a show at the Storyhouse theatre. Didn’t realise how close it was! Lovely quirky and authentic inn. Loved the slightly creaky floorboard and slanting stairs - all adds to the quirkiness. Will certainly stay here again.

We called for lunch on a visit to Chester As we walked in there was an aroma of the micro brewery in cellar! We tried the home brewed stout which was absolutely divineFor lunch we both ordered crab and avocado sandwichThis arrived with chips, which was nice, but unexpected as menu stated crisps, but as first as we visited day after bank holiday weekend happy with substitute Service and beer was excellent and would definitely come again. Only improvement I could suggest was offering brown bread for drab and avocado sandwich, as our very generous portion was served on brioche, which was a little too sweet and over powered the delicious crab filling Definitely recommend

Great old pub with good food and drinks. We did the brewery tour which was great and Kieron the guide was knowledgeable and had a great personality.

My daughter bought us a visit to Veeno's in Chester as a Christmas present. We have been before, two years ago just before lockdown. Booked the massive room at the front of the pub. I showed a picture of it to my daughter, she said it was as big as her whole flat. She could be right. Characterful is how I would describe it. The beams and uneven floorboards made us feel at home (we live in a converted chapel) The room was comfortable, good sized sitting area with a settee. Big, flat screen TV. Well appointed bathroom. The only downside was the noise from the street, something which the owners can do nothing about. Sadly, being a listed building it cannot have double glazing, not available in the Middle Ages. A minor inconvenience. Lovely breakfast too. Thank you for a great stay again.
