My wife and I attended and left extremely happy. The value for money was exemptional, to go alongside the super relaxed and ambient atmosphere. My wife had the Sticky belly bacon followed by the Braised featherblade of beef. I went for the Salad of octopus, boudin noir and new potatoes, torched garlic and lemon sea bream (side of truffle and Parmesan chips (not needed as the main dish was plenty but still yummy)) and then the warm lemon and brown butter syrup pudding. The pudding wasn't as lemony as I like but still lovely.

Nice but at a cost. Good different dishes with quiet efficiency, but at a cost. August menu limited so chose the main menu. So two mains with one side , one small can of beer and two desserts including Service charge over £100! So is one main and dessert worth £43? Must be as the place was busy on a Thursday evening.

Disappointed. My husband and I opted for the lunch/bistro menu. The chicken skewers were done but undercooked, with lots of soft fat instead of a crispy char. I asked for a wine to be recommended for the main - it was very sweet and did not work with the meal. I think I was simply given the house wine. The black sesame ice cream had crystallised in parts and left a greasy film in my mouth. Won't be rushing back.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Sticky Walnut, located at 11 Charles St, Cheshire, Chester CH2 3AZ, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. We arrived without a reservation, but the staff graciously accommodated us as walk-in customers, making us feel welcomed immediately. Traveling with children can sometimes make dining out challenging, but The Sticky Walnut made it seamless. The staff were incredibly attentive to our kids, offering a special menu and engaging them throughout the meal. It’s rare to find a place that balances family-friendliness with gourmet excellence, but they managed it perfectly. The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the food. Each dish was cooked to perfection, showcasing the chef’s skill and attention to detail. We were particularly impressed with the use of local and seasonal produce, which added a fresh and vibrant touch to every plate. The flavors were outstanding, each bite bursting with complexity and harmony. To complement the exquisite food, The Sticky Walnut offers a lovely wine list featuring a diverse selection that pairs wonderfully with their menu. The staff were knowledgeable and recommended wines that elevated our dining experience even further. Overall, The Sticky Walnut delivered a dining experience that was both sophisticated and accommodating. From the expertly cooked dishes to the welcoming atmosphere, especially for families, it’s a place we’ll be returning to time and again. Highly recommended!

Went to Sticky last night for the £15 set menu dinner. Was beaut. I really love that you can book for a really nice, more pricey lunch/dinner OR you can pop in for breakfast or the early evening set menu at a competitive cost, and the quality is always superb. Also five stars for service, I must have been to Sticky Walnut 50 times and never once has the service been lacking. Once I asked for some leftover breakfast to be packaged in foil to take home for the dog, and by accident it was thrown away. I overheard the server asking the chef to make bacon and sausage for my dog, so I wasn't disappointed. It does not get more customer friendly than that :)

It must be summer. On Sundays I would normally have the always excellent roast beef but today I chose barbecued sea bream. I was not disappointed. Cooked perfectly and really tasty. We were a group of 5 and had 3 courses which took a relaxed 1hr 40 mins. Not hurried or too slow, the food and service were excellent. Read one or two reviews about portion size. Sticky's food is food to savour, one forkful at a time. Then you get all the flavours and richness and can appreciate all the effort that has gone on in the kitchen. It might not be bulky but it is delicious and very very satisfying.

After a gap of some 18 months I really enjoyed my return visit. The food was again mostly excellent, the highlight being the rhubarb-based dessert, which was delicious. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and was looking forward to a nice meal. I had the chicken liver parfait with sourdough toast. The parfait was fine but a very small portion however the toast was overdone almost burnt. My husband's sticky belly bacon was good but again a really small portion. I chose the pan fried cod fillet as a main, unfortunately portion size was extremely small! The cod was about the size of a table spoon and there was no mashed potato. Two long stem broccoli and parsley sauce. My husdand had 6 chips with his featherblade of beef and he gave me two as I was so hungry. We ordered a side dish of roasted carrots at £5 but it was essentially just one chopped carrot! £13 for a medium size glass of Malbec was way over the top. As we were so disappointed with what we ate we decided to forget both dessert and coffee but the bill came to £130 which is not value for money. In summary it was way over priced for what you get, do not go there if you are hungry. We came home and raided the fridge?

My partner and I booked here for the Valentine's set meal for an eye-watering £75 per person (!) and we felt utterly conned. We had the duck spring roll and the soup for starter, which were both fine but tiny in portion size. For the main, we shared the châteaubriand steak, with some broccoli stems and fries. Again, this was just okay and a big let down as the apparent main focus of the meal, but there simply wasn't enough to share. The dessert was exceptionally awful. We ordered the fig cake and the passionfruit pastry, both of which were disgusting. The fig cake was topped with camembert, a choice that simply didn't work. Both desserts had a couple of very reluctant bites before being pushed aside. The stand out of the evening was the fries, which aren't exactly difficult to mess up. The place also lacked any atmosphere, and we left still feeling hungry. However, the service and members of staff were absolutely fantastic and looked after us very well for the evening. They are a true asset to Sticky Walnut.

The 2 courses for £15 enticed us in, but I’ve been left feeling conned and hungry. We’ve eaten here once or twice a year as a treat and last night went with a couple of friends. Sadly, for us, it’s not worth the expense any more. When we got there (about 6.30pm) we were seated upstairs and it was absolutely freezing. We were all wearing warm clothes but shivering. Didn’t warm up until we got our mains and the restaurant was busier. Service was great until we got our dessert. As the waitress put them down for us to eat she told us that they needed the table back in 15 mins . We’d been there just over 2 hours, and hadn’t delayed in ordering food when asked. Put an edge on the rest of the meal . After that we felt like we were being watched by hovering staff. Why present a 3+ course expensive menu with an option of a 4th course if you aren’t going to give people the chance to enjoy it? The food was generally very tasty, but portion sizes have reduced. The bread that you normally get as a welcome has stopped being served (and now appears on the menu to pay for). My starter of burrata was lovely and plentiful. But after that, my venison main had a lot of celeriac and sauce but the piece of braised venison was tiny, maybe 2 mouthfuls… I had the ice cream and honeycomb dessert, which was hard to eat with a giant piece of honeycomb plonked on top. The bill for 4 of us, with one bottle of wine and a couple of additional glasses was over £280. Too much for the size of the portions and if you’re going to rush people from their tables. There are other better fine dining experiences in Chester now so sadly I don’t think we will be back in a rush.

We had a family meal here for a party of six. Atmosphere Convivial and living up to it's aim of being a neighbourhood bistro. Food For the table: The following were declared to be good or very good: rosemary and thyme focacia; medjool dates wrapped in smoked bacon, gordal olives. Starters: butternut squash roasted with baharat spice, truffled Jerusalem artichoke and Welsh rarebit on brioche toast, cauliflower soup (although served luke-warm). Mains: Pan-roasted cauliflower with sumac, pan-fried cod fillet, 35-day-aged sirloin of beef to share. (I would describe my main of halibut fillet as containing too much broth, making it more of a miso dish. Had I known this, I would not have ordered it.) Desserts: vanilla creme brulee, honeycomb ice cream, baked vanilla yoghurt. Service For some people, the current service might be too rushed and did not contain the attention to detail expected in an Elite Bistro restaurant. We, however, had no complaints. The two servers were definitely on the ball and responded quickly to all our requests, despite the restaurant being almost full; they were also polite and friendly. Value for money It was not cheap at £48 for 3 courses (£56 for those sharing the beef steak), but the quality of the ingredients and efficiency of the service counterbalanced the cost being slightly on the high side.) Everything considered, we enjoyed our evening at the Sticky Walnut.

Wanting to support independent business, the Sticky Walnut should be the ideal place to enjoy an outstanding meal, especially given the various accolades it has received over the past years. It is however, an over priced, over hyped, disappointing restaurant with under educated staff who are inept at guiding you through the over ambitious menu. I say over ambitious, as they do not succeed in delighting you with the mouth watering description on the menu. Unfortunately portion size, mistakes and general inability appear to shine through and this takes the sheen off some potentially excellent cooking. I’m sure if the actual chef was there the whole experience would have been wonderful, but unfortunately I don’t believe he was. I was desperate to try and love this but I’m afraid hope alone did not satisfy!! My wife, however thought there was nothing to write home about!

We were so looking forward to trying the Sticky Walnut so we booked it for our anniversary. We had high hopes but came away disappointed. We selected starters and mains which were fine but not exceptional. They were well prepared but insufficient. We search out good food but this was ok and portions were far too light. With half a bottle of wine left and still hungry we ordered cheese which was sold out at 8:20 in the evening! We ended up leaving and taking home half a bottle of wine to accompany cheese at home. Not the anniversary we were hoping for. Wish we could recommend but can’t as the bill came to £130 and we left very hungry. Can’t say we will return.

After hearing good things from locals and seeing the good reviews online we had high hopes for this place, but honestly we were very disappointed. The only positive was the service, staff were attentive and friendly. The atmosphere on the other hand reminded me of somewhere that you may go for breakfast. It didn't have that upmarket intimate feel that you would expect when paying the type of prices that this restaurant commands. Upstairs was hot, cramped, and poorly lit. The toilets were like something you would find at a takeaway - tiny, old, badly decorated. Remember this places charges you £50 per head and £52 for a bottle of average Malbec. Let's be real here. The food was mediocre at best. We had the braised pig cheek to start, the meat was dry, hard, about the size of my thumb and the sauce lacked any depth of flavour you expect with this type of slow cooked dish. I went into my second course hungry and disappointed. The venison (two ways) turned up well presented but in a bowl. Why? Completely the wrong type of plate for this dish. This dish had a very well cooked piece of meat some celeriac puree, smoked bacon a roasted onion and a venison sausage (dry). It was ok and an improvement from the starter but again nothing that wowed me or left me longing for more. Lastly the desert with was a thimble full of ice cream, chocolate sauce and a huge piece of honey comb balanced on the top. A confused dessert that seemed like an after thought by the pastry chef. I wanted this place to shine but it was such a disappointment.

What a very disappointing experience. This has to be the most pretentious place I've ever eaten in. The menu looked decent (if a fair bit expensive) and the reviews are great, so I ventured here for a meal. The confit duck leg was presented really nicely, but the sauce that the red cabbage was served in tasted weird. What stood out for me most of all, though, was the portion sizes. They were small, and I mean TINY. Seriously, I couldn't believe the size of the lamb starter - it was about the size of a five pound note, folded in half. And the halibut was the most pathetic piece of fish I've ever seen in my life - and for £32! It took about 30 seconds for us to get through the starters and about a minute to get through the mains. I didn't bother with a dessert because I needed to go home and make myself some tea first. Also, it wasn't a busy evening, but they sat us right at the back, directly next to other diners, which made the experience quite uncomfortable, especially as it was so quiet in there. I felt like we were all sat together, and I didn't really want to talk much because the other guests could hear every word of our conversation. I understand why restaurants sometimes sit diners closely together so they're not going all over the place, but this was too close. I now look back over the other reviews and I can't help but think a lot of diners have given positive feedback because they've been taken in by how up itself the place is, and it's a chance to come across as a bit "posh". So all in all, I do not recommend this place. The whole experience was style over substance. I've a good mind to sue them for false advertising, as what I was given did not constitute a "dinner". But I'm in a good mood, so you just scrape a two-star.

This is a top notch restaurant that hits the spot on so many notes. The main thing though is that the food is original and absolutely delicious. We both opted for the Pan Fried Fillet of Stone Bass - the golden raisins, pine-nut and salted lemon dressing was a standout. I think I make the best mash potato but Sticky Walnut challenged me with their garlic and olive oil version - I have since made this at home and I am a complete convert. The restaurant is relaxed for what could be considered fine dining. The staff knew their stuff and were welcoming. It also offers good value for money. We were slightly amused by the guest at the table next to us ordering just a plateful of carrots in a culinary restaurant of this calibre, but each to their own. Looking forward to visiting again - a must do if you are visitor to Chester. Highly recommended!

Excellent dinner and wine selection - good selection of dishes across a 3 course meal for 4, including one vegan. Waiting staff were knowledgeable about the menu, steak and halibut were cooked beautifully. Also pleased to see a restaurant unafraid of using vegetables to showcase...

Return visit for lunch as a family (with 2 young children), first time we've been for a few years. Had 3 courses, starters and mains were very good. Service faultless too. Would happily go back again and sure we will.

I booked a table for my 30th birthday and I loved it! It was a very nice small restaurant with great service a lovely atmosphere and amazing food. The item I wasn't too keen on was the spring roll which I thought was a bit naff. Otherwise, everything else was great and they even catered for my vegan wife. Oh, and their absolute best dish was their truffle chips, best chips I have ever had!

It's called a takeaway and service and disposable cups, food trays etc are all disposable - stand around whilst numbers are shouted out AKA McDonald's until your drinks are ready. Also, no food offerings visible for intolarances or Coeliacs, just for lifestyle choices - a large sign warns about lots of allergies, so be grateful for a drink I guess.... You get to sit in quite pleasant surroundings... Disposing/recycling every cup/food box that's used is not very sustainable.

Somehow they have managed to serve up a fantastic fish pie , right size portion , terrific flavour , just enough mash on top and with egg which I think essential. Hope it wasnt the last of the line !
