We can not fault the food, the food was delicious. The only thing that let our visit down was the service. We had our starters cleared and wasn’t offered another drink even though we had empty glasses. Mains came (still empty glasses) and even though we addressed that partner didn’t like onions we were assured that we would be fine with the steak only to find out it had onions in the sauce, partner asked if peppercorn sauce was available, chef said it would be 5 which we said no problem, partner waited to eat steak, got to 15 minutes later so we chased up the sauce only to find out the waitress thought we said don’t worry about it. In that time we had to hunt for vinegar as wasn’t asked if we needed any sauces and then went to the bar to get more drinks and ask for ketchup as also wasn’t offered. There was only 3 tables but plenty of staff on floor so no need for poor service. Must point out the manager did come and apologise.

This pub was chosen by my neice and her partner for a get together with my wife and myself. The stablishment, despite its age, was well looked after and very clean. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Sad;y, the food read very well on the menu but sadly was not as good as I expected.

We found this pub whilst taking a back route home, a lucky find - and being in the Chilterns we will return for a walk too. The nut roast was great and the mini desserts were just the right portion size with a generous pot of tea. Although on a main (ish) road to Reading it felt quiet and the garden area edging onto woodland was lovely too.

Beautiful Old traditional pub on the A4074 road. One of the finest examples of coaching inns in the South East. Fantastic staff with smiles and great food. Lovely loos and not too noisy. This is our third visit to the packhorse at Christmas. It’s a lovely pub, makes me feel Christmassy with the cottage feel and low beams. The food has always been good in previous years but it was awful today. I ordered off the set Christmas Menu. I had the clam chowder soup, it was flavourless and watery. Not thick and creamy as a chowder should be. I couldn’t taste the sweetcorn in the dumpling. The main for me was the biggest let down. I had roast turkey that was swimming in its own watery grave. 3 tiny sprouts and no other veg! 3 very hard roast potatoes that were obviously reheated. Where was the parsnips, carrots and other veg. My daughter had the kids portion and she at least had some peas and carrots! I asked for more veg and in fairness they did bring some out by which time I had eaten most of what was on my plate, mainly because I’d not eaten all day. It just wasn’t worth the money, a poor ready meal version of an Xmas dinner. My husband had steak and it was v chewy. My mums lamb was fatty but again nothing special. Due to the disappointment of the main meals we decided not to bother with pudding. Went to local supermarket and bought ice-cream instead. The service was good and atmosphere still nice, just the food today that let it down and sadly we will look for a different venue next year for our Christmas outing.

I went to the Packhorse for lunch recently. Ordered the “steak” burger for £15+. It was obviously a burger cooked from a frozen patty reheated in the microwave. Awful. A great location and a great pub, wasted with bad management and lazy cooking. Two star because of the wood fire and setting, otherwise it would be a one star.

A group of 34 of us booked our Christmas lunch at the Packhorse. We had all pre-ordered from a menu which offered 6 choices for each of the 3 courses, from festive favourites such as turkey and Christmas pud to some more unusual items such as a mushroom, chestnut lentil and spinach Wellington and a blackberry and hazelnut roulade with bramley apple sorbet. From the time we arrived, everything went smoothly. The food arrived in a timely fashion and was nicely presented. Portion sizes were just right. One member of the party requested an adaptation to one of the courses and this was accommodated without any fuss. The mulled wine available from the bar lent a festive touch.Well done to all the team. Thank you.

Yorkshire puddings very flat. Never asked during the meal whether we were enjoying our food, perhaps they realised. Asked about this, told by the waitress that ours were an old batch of Yorkshire puddings. Spoke to the manager who could offer no excuse other than chef admitted there was a poor batch produced. Very disappointing. Dessert was ok.

Popped in around lunchtime on Saturday 4 Sept 2021, driven past the place numerous times over the years, decided to give it a go and wasn’t disappointed. We walked to the bar and noticed a great selection of gins, the fella behind the bar was very engaging and friendly and showed us some of the gins, we had a good feel about the place made even better by the friendly staff. Ordered our food, the wife had a couple of starters served as a main (baby squid, garlic prawns) and I had a beef and ale pie, the food was really good, we are foodies and have run a very successful catering company for 11 years so we know what we like and can spot good service and good from a distance. Thank you for the very warm welcome, good food and excellent service on the day, we will be back.

Unfortunately standards have slipped a bit since my last review. The barman started to measure out Prosecco instead of pouring it straight into the glass, so losing the fizz. Another customer pointed this out to him. Later, when we wanted liqueurs at the end of the meal, another barman said they had no Amaretto, but they did have Disaronno (which IS Amaretto). There were dozens of gins but not a great choice of liqueurs, and no Drambuie. During our meal there was a long wait for the plates to be cleared after we had finished each course. When the main course was served 8 were brought out, but mine was forgotten, entailing another wait. Having said all that, the food was excellent, with plenty of choice, well cooked and nicely presented.

Visited for second time today for teenage sons birthday. Having raved about their ploughman’s from a previous visit I was disappointed when it arrived with one element missing and two others past their best. However when brought to their attention this was all sorted out efficiently with fresh items. All the other food ordered, fish and chips, bubble and squeak, various desserts and for the birthday boy the fillet steak was excellent and much enjoyed by our three generational party. Lots of outdoor space for those of us who would prefer not to be inside just yet. Creme brûlée should be on as a full size dessert as the mini version was lovely.

We were impressed that we were accommodated at such short notice as we decided spontaneously to go out for lunch due to a change in weather. The staff were polite and attentive, the food presentation was excellent, the food very tasty and we could not fault the service. However, we understand that Covid precautions have to be taken, but were rather aghast at having the window flung open at their request without any consideration to us when a new couple arrived and we were the only other ones in the area and already seated. We would have appreciated being asked first. It did rather spoil our enjoyment as we probably would have stayed longer.

As we had to sit outside (COVID) and the weather was nice and sunny (but cold in the shade) I had hoped that they would have sat us in the sun. But no, we were sat in the shade with a really nippy wind. There were heaters on the wall but they wouldn't give a fly some warmth. Also there was a loud extractor fan for the freezer above our heads which made conversation difficult. We did ask if we could move but apparently we couldn't. As a result we left earlier than we would have done normally as we all needed to get home and warm up! Food-wise it was very expensive for what it was. As a group a few people ordered burgers and said they were nice, the chicken and leek pie was apparently all gone. My partner and I ordered the Lamb Sunday Roast which was surprisingly lacking in flavour, potatoes soggy as they were swimming in gravy and paired with some soggy greens - probably kale. Please for the future can the gravy be served separately in a boat so customers can decide how soggy they want their meal?£70 for two disappointing lamb roasts (stuffing, pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese ordered separately as they're not included - coming to another £15 for the three!) (AND no yorkie pudding as only beef roasts get one of them), a coffee, one Guinness and an appletiser. All served in the freezing cold when we could have at least had the sunshine.

Prawn cocktails and chicken croquette salads - nice and light.Mains of Roast Lamb, Roast Pork, Beef Bourguignon, and Mushroom risotto were all excellent indeed. We then chatted at length about what I had been informed, last night, by a Belgian mate - that even a small village like Lo-Reninge had had 30 people test positive for the current virus, and I admitted the Boss had been correct to withhold us from travelling in the Benelux Region. For afters we ordered two cheese boards, between the four of us - cheddar and a blue cheese with accompaniments, which were very nice indeed.Bottle of Chenin Blanc was shared between the three, whilst I had a very nice icy tomato juice and a pint of diet cola.Really good grub, good service on a very beautiful day - which certainly even made me forget I had a chronic ear infection.Lovely Stuff!

Booked for a light Friday lunch. Great place lots of charm, service was prompt and welcoming, but the food - chips, onion rings and fish fingers were over fryed in old oil. Shame as they let themselves down, it was a simple meal but not done well.

We go to this pub quite often. Staff are young, fun and friendly, the food is always of good quality and portion-size, and the garden is a good area for children to play. Lovely, rural location.

I have driven past this pub many times but only went in on the bank holiday weekend. And very glad I did. Friendly helpful service, good menu choice, food was on our table within 10 minutes, lovely atmosphere. Now in our top 5 local restaurants!

This remains a very popular place to eat in the area and with the warm weather has been able to make good use of the large garden. A good selection of dishes on the menu and the service is friendly and efficient. They manage the Covid restrictions well with all staff wearing visors. The only negatives were the pungent smell from the septic tank, on a warm day dont siit on the right side of the garden and they do use disposable menus for each customer but there were a collection of them on the table from previous customers.

we have been using the Packhorse for more years than I can remember and have always loved both the food, value and service. However, we visited today at lunchtime to take advantage of the EOTHO scheme and to support the Packhorse who must have been hit hard during the recent 5 months of closure. We were impressed by all the new processes that had been installed to make people safe, we were impressed by the service too. But, our meals were very much below the standard which we have come to expect and, double and, the prices have been inflated - a lot. We would never have had a bill of £90 for 3 people eating with only 2 courses each. OK, we recieved £30 off and with a reduced VAT rate but the food was terrible and the price was incredible. It felt as though they have inflated the prices to try and recoup what has been lost over the preceding months even though they are able to claim back the £30. £19 for a main course in a pub is way more than we have paid recently in restaurants where the food is cooked from scratch! Brunning and Price you should be ashamed at your greed aimed at your loyal customers who are trying to support you. This is very short sighted (if this is the case). The whole concept of EOTHO is to restore people's confidence and to re-establish old patterns of eating out - sadly we feel as if we have been taken for a ride and will not return; really such a shame.

Enjoyed a pleasant family lunch. Staff attentive and friendly. Pub busy for a Monday lunch time but covid regulations being well implemented and felt comfortable. Good menu was plenty that looked tempting. Only had main courses- sea bass, Malaysian curry ( veggie) steak burger and two fish and chips. All excellent. Eat out to help out halved the bill so very happy.

This was our first visit out to pub/restaurant since the current problems started back in February.Very hot day and interior had no air conditioning., so we just sweltered .Service started well with pleasant staff member however we then had a wait of 50mins for starter to arrive..To be fair it was busy and they removed the starters from our bill , so good customer service there.Mains was steak for myself, very expensive (did want burger but they had run out of all beef and chicken burgers !!! )..however well cooked and chips very good , my partner had the crispy beef salad , she was disappointed as different to when we last visited and lacking in flavor.Pud was ok but only one fridge working ( and not very well) so sorbet was somewhat melted ..the Crème Brulee was reasonable .All in all ok but could have been improved on easily , perhaps the restrictions currently in place are causing them more problems than they expected ?

Had lunch today, 12 Aug, which I booked yesterday. Starters chosen were the squid and the prawns. Mains were prawn linguine and crispy beef salad. Pinot Grigio was ok'ish. Perhaps put a better one on the menu.Service was efficient especially as they and all of the diners were unbearably hot. We sat in the garden and the social distancing was very organised. We took advantage of the Gov deal so our bill was very cheap.I couldn't answer some of the questions below as we went straight through to the garden.i've based 'value' on what I would have paid full price.

Very disappointed with the service at The Packhorse this evening. We dropped in on the offchance for a drink and to see if they were still serving food. "Not a problem" I was told. Clearly however it was a problem. We were sitting at the front garden and due to no service at the bar (Covid precautions I've no issue with that) we gave our table number and checked that someone would be over to take our drink order. We were also given a menu. After 15 minutes had passed still no one had come to take an order. From our position we could see a steady stream of drinks being taken to the rear garden but at no time did any member of staff venture out to the front. When I went back in to enquire if anyone was coming or if there had been a problem a clearly flustered bar colleague stated that they were very busy and wouldn't even check that my table had been registered on the computer. The pub was indeed busy but given we were told drinks and food would be no issue I was expecting better.I would love to be able to give a review on the food and drinks but we left as it was clear our custom was not valued. I unfortunately would have to recommend avoiding The Packhorse if this is typical of the service received, especially at busy times.Disappointed !!!

We parked up at the pub (good sized car park) and walked the dogs before eating. The place was fairly quiet but I'm sure when things get back to more normal if will be heaving. There was plenty of space inside (didn't go to the back beer garden but there is space out the front as well - with table service at the moment for drinks).Hand washing when you go in with friendly staff to serve you.We shared squid and halloumi fries to start and then had curry and prawn pasta for mains and the food was great.I'm sure in normal times the place is heaving at the weekend but we had a very laid back pleasant evening.

The first (and last) time myself and colleagues had been in this specific area, both Mapledurham pubs were closed due to the virus (back in June).Very erratic mixed weather in the area, but it was mild enough to sit outside for lunch.I wasn’t particularly hungry, so I opted for the salmon and haddock fish cakes which were very nice.Male colleague had the Roast Pork, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and lady colleague had her favourite - sea bass fillets which looked excellent.Management and staff have done well to keep this as ‘safe’ as possible in the current situation.

Having read on facebook about another family's wonderful experience, and their fabulous gluten free menu, we thought we'd give it a try. They are being very assiduous of safety measures for corona virus, hand sanitisers, and masks for the staff. We were sat inside, and were the only people in our room! The pub itself is lovely, wonderful ambience. Fabulous wine menu (amazing gin menu!), the staff were friendly, assiduous in their attention, and very professional. The food was very, very good. I had the fish and chips - very fresh, beautiful batter, and the most gorgeous chips. Husband had the steak burger, and was most impressed. Next time, we'll be taking the coeliac of the family and they can try out the gluten free menu - and we'll make darned sure we leave room for desserts!

My husband and I popped in on a Tuesday for a lunch after a hospital appointment. It was very busy but the cheerful young man managed to find us a table.I had a steak which was cooked to perfection, my husband had the slow cooked belly pork which he said was so delicious. He also had the chicken liver pate starter and the waffle dessert. The beer was a well known one which my husband loves and I had a really nice red wine. We have visited before with family for a 80th birthday meal last year, again all our dishes were cooked perfectly. We will be back soon, it's a shame we don't live closer!

I had the crab cake starter followed by the fish pie (with an extra side of creamed spinach). The fish pie (recommended by my son, who had eaten here recently) and spinach was first-class! Went with seven companions, and all were happy with food, beautifully presented, except one who said the roast meat was tough and had left a lot on her plate. Service was good throughout (young lady with white-blonde bob), but...the 'coffee' - tasted like filter coffee left for hours - unpleasant! Suggest use pods? I can't quite recommend the food due to my companion's experience with the meat - they need to watch this, as I see below another reviewer said similar. But certainly the courses I had were delicious. Bill was surprisingly low so good value.

I am a kind of burger fan, my other half celebrates the national fish and chips day here 😊, but I would say here the Scottish Cod and the Berrick Burger are the non-plus ultra of pub food nationwide ✅ All ingredients supplied by local farms, bakeries. Hospitality, kindness, five stars, A+ class. Pets friendly, playground for kids, beer garden, spacious carpark, friendly locals. Strongly recommended place☝

Our Christmas meal from work, an opportunity for us all to get those Christmas jerseys out and party. The Red Lion is in the village of Brightwell cum Sotwell just outside of the market town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Set Christmas menu, plenty of choice, we could choose 2 or 3 courses. The food was cooked perfectly and presented very well. Lovely atmosphere, it's sort of cosy, just a lovely place to spend a few hours. Thank you.

The Crazy Bear used to be such a wonderful “Crazy” culinary & visual experience but things have certainly changed. We decided on the 12 course Thai Signature menu which was below food court standard & that’s being kind…in fact, I’m not actually sure there was any Thai apart from the stodgy Pad Thai…& that may have been the best dish. If like us you’ve had many memories of the Crazy Bear, those days have passed I’m afraid
