We ate here on 6 evenings. A family run business, friendly welcome, extensive menu, excellent food. Highly recommend.

Superb Sunday lunch. Very last minute booking but Peter very kindly accommodated us. I ordered the beef and my husband ordered the turkey, both were cooked to perfection with lots of lovely vegetables. We are never disappointed with the quality and cooking of our food and look forward to our visits to the Packhorse. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere, highly recommend.

Walked in and no o e to serve at the bar. All tables had a reserved sign on them. Second visit yo this pub in 24 years and again walked our as we felt unwelcome. Won't bother going there again.

Staying in a holiday cottage just down the road, we had to visit here as it's reputation was better than the other nearest pub. During our week long holiday we visited here three times, twice just for a drink and once for dinner. Each visit was excellent except for the dinner visit, but i'll get to that soon. The drinks visits were superb! A very warm welcome from staff and regulars. The pint of Butcombe ale was EXCELLENT! The night we went for dinner is why I have given four not five stars. Don't get me wrong the service and food was beyond superb. However, we were seated on a table right next to the bar which ordinarily wouldn't have been too much of a problem, however the night of our dinner, at the table next to us was seated what I assume was the local object of pity, who was continually being fawned over by the staff. Also the local cricket team decided to pay a visit that night and occupied the bar right next to our table, so we had to endure a VERY loud discussion about their recent victory. Not that it ruined our dinner, but we would have preferred not to have to listen to very boring cricket talk for over an hour. That said, I can highly recommend a visit to The Packhorse, just ask for a table away from the bar if your eating one night.

Had heard such good reviews about this place so thought we would try. Service was very very good, food was ok but didn't enjoy sitting right near the bar, no separate restaurant to sit in. Food was really well presented but expensive for what you get, partner had chicken, asked for no salad and literally just got a bit of chicken, which said fillet on menu but didn't get this, and chips and nothing else on the plate. Chicken wasnt great but the chips were very good though. Crab salad was really nice but alot of money for what you got. Overall wouldn't rush back mainly due to not enjoying sitting right next to the bar and not value for money

The food is amazing. I had the crab & crayfish tails which was so lovely & fresh. I ordered a roll to go with it, which was warm & so tasty. My husband had the steak, which was cooked so lovely. The staff was attentive but not constantly asking if we was ok which was lovely but also wasn’t left for ages. The staff was really friendly & welcoming. Looking forward to coming again soon with family.

Superb food, lovely atmosphere, very welcoming. We shared a starter of pate and shared a desert. My husband ordered cod which he loves and I ordered Cajun chicken which is the best I have eaten. Came this evening for dinner on the last night of our holiday …AMAZING food , AMAZING service . Welcoming staff who are very friendly and polite . Food was so good and portion size great we felt bad we couldn’t eat it all , we had starters and main . We were staying in the village for a week's holiday and looking for somewhere close by to have dinner. We booked ahead and arrived a little early to find it fairly quiet, but with plenty of "reserved" signs on the empty tables; a promising sign! We were quickly seated and drinks orders taken whilst we perused the menus. There was an excellent selection, with a number of daily specials. I plumped for the lasagne and my brother the duck special. Both were absolutely delicious - full of flavour (I did eat quite a lot of the residual cherry sauce from the duck!). Proper sized portions too, and it was good to see that the lasagne came with salad and garlic bread/chips as standard. Empty plates, then desserts came along. We both went for the chocolate torte and they were happy to give us ice cream instead of the cream that was on the menu. Again, absolutely scrumptious food. We left full and happy with the meal. £30 for the two courses including drinks was reasonable. My only (very slight) point of improvement was that it would have been nice to have seen some more local ciders on offer (I appreciate Thatcher's IS local, but it's rather widespread!). However, this did not detract in any way from an excellent meal.

We visited for Father’s Day as a party of 9. We had a lovely table in the private dining room to ourselves which was wonderful and have since booked this room for 15 of us in July. The food and service were excellent. The pub was extremely busy but the staff were still attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The food was served fast, piping hot and was plentiful. The lamb, beef, and turkey were tender and tasty, and the cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire puddings were to die for! There was not much room left for dessert so we shared some between us. We look forward to seeing you again for our 40th birthday celebrations in July.

Unfortunately one of the worst lunch experiences we’ve had in a very long time. We visited for Sunday lunch on Father’s Day, the service was good, and the ladies on front of house were polite and friendly. The starters were fine, with no complaints, however the mains, the lamb was lovely, but the Beef was far from it, out of the three of us that had it, one was okay but a couple pieces little too pink, another had half the plate too pink, and the last served with nearly none of the meat cooked even to a medium rare, the actual beef was cold and extremely bloody, so much so that it left my mother running to the toilet to vomit. I like my steaks rare to medium-rare, pink with a little blood, however I could see after looking under the gravy that this had hardly seen any source of heat, and was practically raw. Unfortunately ruined our lunch and Father’s Day. While the lady did take off 2 of the mains as. They were hardly touched due to the beef just being too rare, pretty much raw. We were still left with the bill for everything else, at quite a price as well. £18 for a Sunday lunch, even if the beef was perfect, still wouldn’t have been worth it, was only served with a very small plate of veg between 2. I’m not sure how this place has achieved the reviews it has, but unfortunately one of the worst dinning experiences I’ve had for the last couple of years.

This is a short drive out from most places but well worth the effort. Good selection of food available with good quality ingredients. Family run business and you can tell why they have built such a good reputation. They care about the food and they care about the customers. Long may they continue and we will be sure to go again next time we are in the region.

Haven’t been here for Sunday lunch for a long time, normally visit in the evenings. After today I have a feeling we will be back soon. Booked ahead , a choice of three starters , three roasts (beef, turkey, lamb) plus a veggie option. We had prawn cocktail to start , good portion size, don’t eat all the bread otherwise you won’t have room for the main course! Beef and lamb were our choices for main course, lovely crisp veg and very cheesy cauliflower cheese. Plenty of meat and delicious gravy . We really enjoyed our lunch , thank you Sophie, Stella , Pete and Evonne it’s always a pleasure.

I had always want to go try the food I deliver kindling to pubs in Somerset and always look at menus as I worked on cruise ships for 25yrars it was top off my 50pubs in Somerset to try and it did not disappoint the cleanliness ambiance faultless staff warm cosy both fires on I had prawn cocktail excellent then I had sea bass partner had salmon and we even got fish knives then a chock cheesecake between two that even split it before bringing out been down in Somerset 7 years and nothing comes close it would have to be very very special to beat this Peter j campbell (jock)

Just superb. A great place for a family gathering with good quality, tasty and reasonably-priced pub food. Also, really nice service. This sort of pub is more of a rarity nowadays with some places becoming too gentrified. Would love to return to sample more tatty offerings! The Packhorse should be high on everyone’s places to eat. A shame we don’t live a bit closer!

Our family went for a birthday celebration dinner. The staff were so helpful, nothing was too much trouble, so attentive and polite and helpful with the menu choices. The food was all beautifully cooked, hot and well presented. All homemade, including the bread and sorbet . Locally sourced produce which looked really fresh. I would not hesitate to recommend eating here. We plan to return. The prices were good for the quality and quantity of the meals we chose. The atmosphere was very relaxing too with no time constraints or pressure on us to hurry our meal. A lovely memorable evening meal.

Visited for Sunday lunch. The pub ambience and welcome from the owners was excellent. Sunday lunch was served, fresh, hot, tasty and with a great selection of perfectly cooked vegetables. Dessert too was lovely, with a wonderful sponge pudding which made my wife's day and was as good as 'nan used to make'

Great village pub with friendly service. Food was spot on and served promptly. We called in on the off chance and so glad we did.

Welcomed like a family member. Guven the dining hall at back as completely packed. Then 5 mins later offered to have a table that had come free near a roaring fire. Given information on places to go locally. The food was fantastic value and plentiful. I had the most tastiest soup ever accompanied by a hot bread roll. My husbands steak cooked to perfection and daughters chicken was moist. To top it off the Ginger pud was so tasty with piping hot custard, a first!. A real family affair with the lovely Sophie front of house her brother the amazingly talented chef and nephew with perfect customer service on bar duty.

I was staying in the area and required an evening meal and the first Pub I found was the White Horse which was almost empty at about 18:00. They said that I couldn't eat there because they were fully booked. I then found the Packhorse Inn which did look rather busy. When I asked the staff at the Bar if it was possible to eat there they said that we're fully booked inside near the bar area but offered me a table in another part of the Pub where I had a great meal before moving back to the Bar for some good Ales.

Compelled to review with thanks our experience at The Packhorse Inn following a wonderful lunch party with family meeting up before Christmas from across the world! Not only was the local ale and food most excellent in taste and quantity, but access to the more private dining lounge a real unexpected treat! Hil Nickell

Have eaten twice year. First was a roast which was average but thought worth another try. Won’t be back again. Had the lamb shank and given its owners are green thought we’d be in for a treat. No. Microwave lamb shank over cooked and dry. Generally the food is as bad as the decor

It is some time since we last visited. The Pub is a country pub very welcoming and nicely decked out for Christmas. The Staff were friendly and professional. A lovely log fire was burning. The meals were excellent and filling so nice to visit a traditional pub for a booked lunch. Hope to visit again.

A group of 8 visited on Sunday. We were staying in the area for a weekend away. The Sunday lunch was amazing, you get cauliflower cheese as standard which is great and great service. They even gave us some milk to take back with us as we had run out and the shops were all shut. So we all had a nice cup of coffee and tea. Would highly recommend.

Visited one weekday lunchtime. Great friendly service, food was delicious, as we're the tea and latte we had. My elderly mother can't eat larger meals so she opted for children's meal of chicken nuggets and fries, she thoroughly enjoyed them. I had children's meal of fish goujons and they were perfect. Both meals just the right portion size for a smaller appetite, as it left some room for the delicious desserts!

If only all pubs were like The Packhorse Inn. A welcoming bar area, good drinks selection, delicious home cooked food, friendly staff and a warming fire crackling away. Absolutely spot on.
