The Packhorse - Eating Inn in Vale of White Horse

We were staying in Abingdon and thought we would get a good meal here. When we arrived at 7pm it was so busy, we ordered our drinks and perused the menu. We both decided on the special soup of the day, which was French onion, and it was lovely and hot and very tasty. For mains hubby chose the sea bass, which he loved, I thought I'd have the rump steak, which was served on a bed of root vegetables, which seemed odd, the steak was cooked to perfection, but the root veg didn't belong there, in fact I gave them all to my husband. First time we have eaten here and slightly disappointed 😞 Plenty of free parking and beautiful clean ladies toilets. We will be in the area again next September and we will return

The welcome and staff very nice , we had called in for a quick lunch on our back home. It is a well presented and large pub ( having last visited some 40+ years ago) , menu is balanced and although it had been busy it was quietening down when we arrived. My wife chose only a starter and I had the burger . Food took ages to come out and the burger whilst nice was cooked to death . On another day I would have sent it back , it’s a shame as the staff had done their best to make it welcoming

My friend and I have visited the Packhorse three times now with her two small dogs and we have always experienced the very best of warm welcomes from the friendly and hard working staff as well as fantastic reasonably priced food. The wine is also of a high standard and kept at the correct temperature which makes all the difference. I am so happy to recommend this wonderful establishment and look forward to many more happy occasions there meeting my friend for lunch or dinner.

Thank you from the Wivern Group to the staff of the Packhorse for being so pleasant and accommodating. The menu had a good variety of choices and the food was enjoyed by all. Many of our members are likely to return. It is nice to know that the standards of food and service that made the Pack Horse popular in the past are being carried on even now.

We turned up without a booking but we're given options where we could eat. We chose the conservatory which was less formal. Staff were very professional and polite. The food was amazing one of the best Sunday roast dinners we've had and puddings were great too. If we were ever that way again we would definitely visit.

We came for a meal on 31st Aug as a celebration meal for my daughters 18th Birthday,We were a table of 7. The food was lovely, with a good choice for everyone, the service was good too. I had forgotten that when I booked the table online, I had put that it was an 18th birthday celebration meal, so when it was time for for pudding and they brought out a plate with happy 18th Birthday it was a nice surprise for my daughter, the special touches like this make a small difference. We will certainly be back again.

we had a very nice lunch here recently. Having never visited before we did not know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised. The building itself was very nicely decorated and the tables well spaced apart. The food was very nice, cooked by someone who could cook well. The wine was very nice too and a good selection.

I have been here twice for dinner. The food is lovely and the staff are friendly and helpful. I’d recommend this restaurant.

I was down on business and just wanted to be in and out quickly. Seems to be a popular place even on weekdays but they had no problem finding me a table. Service was quick and efficient. Good choice on the menu to suit most tastes. Good selection of real ales that had been kept well.

Had lunch food was fantastic and staff very friendly and helpful - booked a table last minute as we were driving down to stay at nearby Milton House Hotel - staff incredibly accommodating at short notice - nothing seemed too much trouble - highly recommend

We've visited here on several occasions. We live locally and it's one of our go tos when we have friends or family visiting. It has never let us down. Food choices range from inventive to classic pub grub and I've never had a problem with it. Service has always been efficient and friendly. Restaurant environment is also nice and chilled but can get busy on weekends. They have now started adding a 10% service charge like many places. I am not a fan of this as staff should be paid sufficient they don't need the service and it should be a bonus if someone tips. However we were asked at the end of the meal if we were happy to pay it, which is novel, most places just put it on and the onus is on you to make a fuss and remove it if you want, but they were nice and asked first, and the service actually justified 10% so we were happy to pay. We will be back. We have had a good experience each time we have been.

We decided to return to the packhorse for our works Christmas meal (STFC) and we were in for a treat. Good food, excellent table service (-10% table charge) food that was very good. Well done to all involved.

We came here for an evening meal having heard good things about this "gastropub". The menu was extensive, in a style to encourage questions about the names they gave the dishes. They also informed us that we had the table for only 2 hours. Like those London restaurants do. The actual meal was underwhelming. The soup lacked any flavour apart from saltiness. The risotto was too watery, also pretty tasteless. Desert very basic - plain ice-cream and a coffee (given a fancy name). The bill for a mediocre pub meal came to over £90 for 2 people, including a 10% tip they awarded themselves.

Visited on a Monday evening (table of 3) for a meeting / dinner. Great service, everyone was very welcoming and friendly. The food was excellent and arrived quickly. Plenty of choice on the menu and we were not rushed to vacate the table despite only having mains and drinks.

Visited today I ordered the Brie & pancetta with onion chutney panini. After an hour it arrived pancetta burnt and no sign of Brie! The waiter came and returned to the kitchen and replace! He offered me a free drink as compensation which I said ok! When it returned there was the tiniest bit of Brie and still pancetta burnt also was cold! Called the waiter again and opened the panini and ‘our you having a laugh’. He took it away and assured me the chef will remake! He also said I won’t be charged, my mum by this time had finished her meal!!! When mine finally arrived it was so different the chutney was pink not black and the panini was good. Sadly though we won’t be returning as a meal that has to go back to the kitchen is just bad!!!

Went here today for lunch with friends, 4 people in the party, we had not booked but were seated at a table immediately, given our menus and were asked if we would like a jug of water for the table to which we said yes, the waitress left and we didn’t see her again for quite some time. Another group of 6 people arrived and were seated near us and they were offered a jug of water which promptly arrived and they were asked if they wanted to order drinks which they declined, the waitress went to walk away and I called her and said could we order some drinks please, and could we please have the jug of water offered when we arrived. She took our drinks order but we had the impression that the waitress wasn’t too happy. When the drinks came we ordered our food which took about 40-45 mins to arrive. Two had steak burger, one had crispy chicken burger, one had pie of the week which was chicken and vegetable. The steak burgers were enjoyable but the crispy chicken certainly lived up to its name! to the point of being burned at the edge. The “pie”, however, was diabolical. The carrots and leeks were virtually raw, the chicken was tasteless cubes of “chicken” the gravy was thin and watery, the “pie top” was a circle of flakey pastry which had been overcooked and had been placed on top of the dish, awful! When the plates were taken away we were asked if everything was ok, I pointed out that the vegetables (which I hadn’t eaten) were under cooked the waiter said he was sorry about that. When we eventually attracted the attention of another waitress we ordered two desserts treacle tart and orange sponge and custard which were both very good. When we were ready to leave, instead of trying to get the attention of the staff, my friend went to the counter to pay, she was informed by the waitress that a 10% surcharge would be included if that’s ok. She said no actually, it wasn’t ok. We are able to decide for ourselves if the food and service were good enough and on this occasion it most certainly was not. We shall not be returning anytime soon.

What a stingy salad! I had Smoked Salmon Nicoise, a plateful of leaves but such a small serving of few thin strips of Salmon and a small spoonful of Avocado, it was really disappointing.

We've eaten at the PackHorse many times over the last few years and sometimes every day within a week. The menu used to be very extensive which appealed but now it's very much reduced. I love salmon but no salmon and fish dish options very limited. I made the mistake of having the seabass which was inedible with such a peppery sauce. I should have remembered choosing that some months ago and hating it and commenting and actually got a refund and my comments were promised to the chef. Obviously the chef hasn't taken any action over the last few months and never will now. Over the last 3 years we've eaten there many many times but I don't plan to go again after the last experience. Service also not brilliant for mid week. Really disappointed as the pub was always my first choice but no longer unfortunately.

Friday night visit. Booked last minute and it was busy with only a couple of tables free. The staff were excellent; very friendly and efficient. The food was fabulous. Thank you to the kitchen staff. We enjoyed our evening and will return.

We got together with friends for a birthhday meal. We had a really delicious meal. Service was exceptional. Surprisingly busy for a Tuesday night. Definitely recommend and can't wait to try the Sunday roast.

So impressed with this place, lovely clean, well organised modern atmosphere, FOH staff were constantly on the ball, very polite and clearly knew what they were doing.. OMG the food was so amazing.. Massive fist pump to all chefs... I will most definately be coming back...

Visited for a work lunch during the week. Staff were attentive & service was fairly quick despite the large size of our group. Everyone seemed happy with their food & there were several vegan options available on the menu (including the sweetcorn & spring onion croquette starter, which was delicious). However, portion sizes weren’t overly generous, especially given the high prices (£7-10 for a starter & £15-20 for a main).

Superb Sunday dinners. I took my parents , my girlfriend and my daughter and her boyfriend to dinner as a birthday celebration. The staff were excellent. The food was superb. The service was exemplary.

This is a great spot if you're staying in the hotel down the road as it is walking distance and easily accessible. The pub itself is lovely and has a great outdoors area if the weather is nice. The décor is lovely and of its time for the building with some modern twists. Drinks are reasonably priced and we were both happy with our choices.

We were a large party and we enjoyed the food. Many of us had one of the roasts which were judged excellent and I was pleased with the risotto of the day. Starters and deserts were also good. Service was friendly. The interior is pleasant and there is sufficient parking.

My partner and I stopped by here for a couple of drinks after visiting the driving range down the road (I would definitely recommend trying the Adnams Pale Ale they have on tap) . We'd never been here before but I'd always heard good things so decided to grab some lunch too. We were lucky as they close their kitchen at 3pm and with it being 2:35pm we'd just got in in time. I had the Cornish Hake & Shetland Mussel Linguine with Chorizo Cream Sauce, Baby Spinach, Cherry Tomatoes & Fresh Chilli. This did not disappoint, it was absolutely beautiful and full of flavour. For just £16.95 it was great value for money. My partner had the Pan Fried Fillets of Seabass with Smoked Paprika, Crushed New Potatoes, Sautéed Tenderstem Broccoli and Cherry Tomato Velouté. He said it was one of the best meals he's had and that the Seabass was devine. I tried the sauce and it was delicious. This dish was £20.50 and one of their many Gluten Free options. Moving on to Dessert I had their dessert of the Day which was a Millionaires Tart with Dulce de leche ice cream and raspberry coulis. It was amazing, I wasn't even going to order a dessert becuase I was fully but I polished of the whe thing!! My partner had the Chocolate Torte with Blood Orange Sorbet & Mixed Berry Coulis – GF. Again he said this was the best dessert he'd ever had! Having only stopped here on a whim, I'm so glad we did as the whole experience was brilliant, the staff were very attentive, making sure we had everything we need, checking back while we ate and clearing off empty glasses (This seems basic but it's so often missed) It's refreshing dining somewhere where all the staff have all been well trained. We will definitely be back and I'll be recommending to everyone I know!

My husband and I were staying at the nearby Milton House Hotel and had seen the reviews which were good so as we could walk there in 5 mins thought we would give it a try. We were not disappointed, food was excellent. We shared the seafood platter to start, which was lovely, especially the mackerel pate, I had sea bass fillets (2) served with green beans and crushed new potatoes, my husband had seafood linguine, the smaller portion which was ample for him. He declined dessert as he was full, but I ordered the lavender and honey panacottta, I must say it was very unusual but absolutely yummy. Our waitress Charlotte was lovely, very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.Would definitely recommend this place

i stumbled upon this quaint little pub on an afternoon walk with my mistress Sandra last weekend, we were greeted at the door and seated next a window with a lovely view. we both had the scallops to start and then i had the sea bass to follow. i cannot describe how wonderful the food and service was. would most certainly recommend !!

This is a review from two visits since restrictions allowed indoor dining. Wishing to find somewhere local which we hadn’t been to for a long while, we chose here and so glad we did. The Packhorse is welcoming, the staff friendly, clearly being happy in their work in this pub/restaurant which is larger than you would imagine from the roadside. It’s decorated beautifully and is clean and therefore a pleasure to visit. Having received the same quality of service from different staff on both occasions, proves they have got it right. The menu had lots of choices and food was fresh, well cooked, and well priced. Table service was just right - not too slow or fast. It was fairly busy in there which was pleasing to see. We will visit again very soon.

Visiting family booked an evening meal here we were in the conservatory as there was a little dog with us so they welcome pets. The Pack horse is nice establishment with great food. There is a very nice selection of items on the menue. My associate eat there a few times a month when in the area and always have great service and food.

After a not so great visit pre lock down, thought we’d try again with an Easter Sunday roast with one chicken and one pork and it was delicious. Tasted like a proper home cooked roast with fluffy potatoes, great yorkies and a good size portion too. It was piping hot and really had great flavour to the everything. Losing a star as the pork didn’t have any honey roasted veg and the gravy was a bit of a small portion. However- this was one of the best roast dinners we’d had from a pub in a very long time and we will definitely be ordering again. Thank you!

Now had 2 takeaways from the Packhorse during lockdown and can only say it’s superb. Lovely fish and chips and so easy to order and collect. Only thing missing is eating in the pub atmosphere but that will be back soon hopefully 😊

Having visited the pub before lockdown and being very impressed with the food we were delighted that the Packhorse we’re offering takeaway during they’re enforced closure. They have a good selection of choices but we always go for the burgers. The food is always fresh, piping hot and tasty. It’s become our Friday night treat. Looking forward to eating in again soon.

Having visited the brilliant Packhorse on Christmas Day, we have since been using their takeaway service at weekends.When thinking about takeaways, the burgers, fish/chips and pizzas come highly recommended, whilst offering excellent value for money.The welcome provided is always top notch and we cannot wait to visit again when pubs fully reopen.

What a find this was, great food great staff and felt COVID safe within this establishment we will be going back as soon as we are allowed!!

Visited today with my lunch partner ...she’s dairy intolerant .The waitress produced an allergen book ... and advised us/ her what dishes she could possibly eat .Spoilt for choice with the menu !I opted for one of the specials fo the day ( a prawn , rocket and bacon risotto) ...delicious ; large portionMy friend had a Caesar salad ( with dressing , anchovies and Parmesan) ..with chicken..again .. another huge portion.

Hadn’t eaten here for a while but returned on the eat out to help out scheme and we’re glad we did! The service was excellent - we had a young waiter and he was very efficient and welcoming. The food was enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere and they were well set up for COVID-19 restrictions.

Visited today for a Sunday roast, amazing as usual. I have visited this restaurant a few times over the last few months as live in the next village. Popped in to try this on our wanders and it’s a magnificent looking pub with great parking and plenty of room for diners, drinkers, dogs and families with a beautiful view over the fields. Sadly though the man on the bar was miserable (I did wonder if this was because my hubby didn’t put sanitiser on as he had just used his sanitiser in the car). He didn’t smile, was cold as Ice and frankly made us feel uncomfortable on our first visit here. We ordered nachos and the chicken in a basket both at £12+ each. The nacho portion was huge and tasty with plenty of filling and probably enough to serve two. However the chicken in a basket was abysmal. A few burnt pieces of chicken and rock hard fries. This was a freezer dinner done badly and as no one came to ask us how it was we didn’t bother stopping for another drink. Maybe the normal chef was off today? Maybe not. Either way we’ll give it one more go in the future but probably on a cheaper dish to start with!

We stopped by on our way home from Dorset for lunch, It took an hour for us to order and receive our meals. I ordered the sweet chilli chicken burger with fries and coleslaw, the piece of chicken was small and burnt as was the bun, the coleslaw was sloppy and was clearly a few days old, the potato fries were ok but well done for my taste,It was a shame because other meals on other tables looked better and the menu and setting was extremely promising. None of the staff asked if we were satisfied with our meals so it’s unlikely I would ever recommend or revisit.

We were a party of 8 of various ages and with varying tastes that were more than catered for. The service needs a special mention particularly Jack who was efficient, amusing, knowledgeable and a definite asset to your team. The food was exceptional, tasty, well cooked with generous portions. We found this pub restaurant on Google maps, as an alternative eatery to the Milton Hill House Hotel just up the road, where we were staying.The Packhorse was amazing. The ambiance felt so normal apart from the obvious face coverings and social distancing. Great choices on the menu, beautifully cooked and very professionally served by young and enthusiastic staff. A truly wonderful dining experience in these difficult times.

Food was superb, good price, excellent selection on menu, staff very friendly and attentive, good portion sizes, we went there to eat purely by chance as it was nearest place to where we were staying (menu was dire), so glad we did, good atmosphere and looks very popular, great food

Really excellent food and very friendly service. The food arrived fairly quickly even though the place was fairly busy. All staff wore protection for the virus.

We can't recommend this restaurant enough. The fresh (un-microwaved) food is delicious with generous portion sizes. The menu is varied and accommodates all tastes. The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly and do their best to keep everything Covid safe. The decor is warm and the restuarant itself is quaint and conveniently just off the A34 for those passing by.

Myself and 6 friends booked in on Tuesday the 12th August. There wasn’t a table free, and rightly so! We shared a few platters to begin - a heaping plate of nachos, a large garlic bread, and a lovely baked camembert. For mains, we had a variety of dishes, ranging from a tremendous burger, to a yummy seafood linguine, and one of the best Caesar salads I’ve ever had! Despite all that’s going on in the world, the atmosphere was still super friendly and everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. The drinks on offer were also top class - some super crisp pints of Heineken and some lovely wines (the picpoul de pinet was a particular favourite!) Our waitress - I believe Gerti was her name - was superb throughout, despite the very apparent busyness. 10/10 will go again, even after this government scheme is over!

Dog friendly pub. Excellent service and staff. Sat in Conservatory. Extensive menu. Separate vegan menu. All dishes fabulous quality, including desserts. Roasted cauliflower and chickpea salad was lovely. Vegan brownie and blood orange sorbet was out of this world.Good social distancing and hand hygiene measures in place.

This was our first venture out to eat for 5 months. The food was excellent. The arrangements were excellent and safe; the staff were very careful and caring.
