Lovely beer garden to shelter from the rain

A friend and I visited this pub as we live locally. He ordered a Pint and I, a coke. After sitting outside (which was very nicely presented and maintained, I was impressed by the space) we moved inside as it was getting chilly, at this point we had been there for about 45 minutes. When we sat down inside (in an empty room) the, I assume owner, came to us and straight away had an attitude, asking my friend to take his shoes off of the bench (he was sitting cross legged not rudely putting his feet up). Shortly after that (about 30 minutes) the owner came back and in a rude and unwelcoming manner, told us that if we didn't order something more that we would have to leave, he said they aren't free shelter or something of the sort. There was hardly anyone there and I guess he had nothing better to do than to put off newcomers. Definitely not the way to treat any guest in your establishment. Shame as the pub itself and the gardens were nice. I would stay very well clear of this place, I won't be returning.

Staff are very pleasant and helpful, the landlady and landlord are very welcoming a d the beer garden is fantastic.

Great pub with ample gardens. We were in the area having visited an emergency vet. An uncle ran the pub in the 1950’s, I’d never been, so it was an interesting place to visit for a drink.

What an absolute banger of a pub this was to experience. It’s like stepping back in time at how pubs should be. Really nice beers and ales on tap and a absolutely huge beer garden. Covered and uncovered seating for any weather

Payed a visit to this establishment on Monday 22 January 2024. Looks nice from the outside and is pretty nice on the inside but unfortunately there is a terrible smell in the place. We ordered three pints from the very friendly barman. Again I have to use the word ( unfortunately) as the pints were not up to standard, they had a taste you get when the lines are not cleaned very often. Anyway we asked the barman what time would be be closing ,he told us a time but I'm afraid his boss put paid to that and told us he was closing the bar. We got the feeling that we are not welcome in the place by the ignorant comments he made towards us. I hope other people have a better experience than we did. The barman deserves to be working for a nicer boss.

Celebrated my late partners life on the 26 September and the staff and owners were superb,friendly nothing was too much ....can highly recommend.

Brilliant pub loverly landlady an staff nice outside area fab for birthdays an events an charity event - ours were rockfit jenny prestwich - 35 of us some of us descending on it an getting the dj to play rock tunes - fab time had by all will be going again-been in with our dog at back on a Sunday afternoon too which was fab too 😁

Kept coming outside to watch us which was extremely uncomfortable Was very very rude every time we ordered we would be given attitude Talking about us to other customers Would shout at us in front of other customers for not bring back a tray And very antisemitism

Pub was nice but the landlord was very racist, I overheard him talking to what I’m assuming was his wife about somebody and I heard the “n word” used multiple times and he then refused entry to my friend when he arrived. I’m guessing because he is darker skinned. Disappointed this stuff still happens in 2023

I had to wait for my passengers for a few hours and came across this pub, as it was a Cortinnas concert it was heaving but all was great. The securitu guys on the I would like to thank for the short cut advise to the motorway, we saved valuble time getting home.

Love this pub, especially on a sunny day. The beer garden is excellent and considering the pub is on a main road, it's so quiet and relaxing. We always receive a warm welcome from the landlord and landlady. They always put some entertainment on at the weekend and on a Thursday, it's bingo and play your cards right.

Was at a birthday celebration here we don’t often go in this pub, and won’t be ever again. We witness the landlady on two separate occasions (who was clearly drunk) make a young lady move where she was sat. She said “this is my seat,move. Only I sit here”. The young lady looked very clearly upset and tearful and humiliated. prior to this a group of women told a man who was sat with his family he couldn’t sit there either. It was the land lady’s seat. And that he wasn’t allowed to sit there. He was also made to move. Such an uncomfortable environment to be in. If you’re not a local or in with the click you are obviously not welcome and rules apply when you’re in there. The landlady should be giving her seat up for anyone & if she doesn’t want to do that don’t work and sit upstairs in your own chair.

We purchased drinks on the bell of the last orders & within ten minutes we were being asked to leave giving us no time to enjoy last orders or finish our drinks. The landlord (Mr) was pacing around the pub shouting for the customers to leave in a very abrupt & rude manner & I will also add from a personal note in a slurred manner indicating he was drunk. We will not be returning & I advise anybody visiting this pub to expect less than the bare minimum when it comes to hospitality.

Excellent Holts house, good beer and an excellent pub garden. Lots of covered space with heaters for cold weather, and plenty of seating In the Sunshine too. Clean and reasonably priced.

We had our mum wake here in March. The staff were so helpful before and during the wake. Many thanks again.

This is a lovely, welcoming pub, we recently had a funeral wake here, they did a fantastic buffet at an excellent price, which was set up very professionally in a separate room. The staff were very attentive, helpful and friendly, there's a beautiful beer garden to the rear. We were all made very welcome by the landlady and her team.... Thank you all for everything you all did..... See you soon.

The pub itself is just a basic local pub nothing special. There main issue was with confrontational member off staff.

I first visited with friends on Halloween and we had an amazing night. We recommended it to our friends and family and so a group of 9 of us visited again last night as it was karaoke and we'd had such a good time at our last visit we were looking forward to another good night. Unfortunately, one of the bar staff was extremely rude to a member of our group who had just walked in and demanded that she go and buy a drink at the bar as "you can't just come and sit in here and not buy a drink". Myself and two others had already been there for about half an hour and had purchased drinks as soon as we walked in. Our friend had every intention of going to the bar but came to greet us first and as you do, you get chatting. She must have been sat there for 5 mins if that before she got a tirade of abuse totally humiliating her in front of us and the rest of the people that was sat in our room. Even people who weren't with us looked shocked at the outburst. I understand if they have a policy that you must purchase a drink if you're sat in the pub, but it was the way that it was said and the attitude that was with it. Ive seen previous reviews about racism and its funny how she was targeted being one of the two members of our group who is black. We decided to stay as we were also there to support the dj who was absolutely amazing and made our night. It's really disappointing as the last time we went in we left thinking what a great place it was. After last night we will not be returning

A local Holts' pub very dog friendly nestled on the outskirts of P-TOWN opposite Heaton Park. Very friendly staff and regular patrons very helpful. Inside there's the fully stocked bar with rooms off it all with TVs showing the latest sports event. Outside plenty of space either on the tables in the sunshine 🌞 along Bury old Rd or under the cover of one of the two sheltered areas, one just outside the pub and the larger one with plenty of seating just a few steps away and both with TVs and the further one also has outdoor heating.

I've been a regular here for years. Affordable, nice beer and a good house rum👌🏻. Nice atmosphere, lots of familiar faces, plenty of small side rooms and lots of beer garden space. Unfortunately no pool table anymore but there is still a darts board.

Wow not been somewhere with such bad customer service in years, highly unrecommended.

Staff are rude and disrespectful, told us off for one of our party sitting for one minute since he hadn't bought a drink yet (the rest of us had already bought drinks). Then constantly checking on us to see if we were doing anything else wrong, told another of our party off for smoking outside, when there were others smoking outside.

The reviews about the Ostrich being a racists pub are ridiculous!! The last thing you want to read is a review like this. I can hand on heart say that I have not experienced any racial incidents of any kind when spending many hours over the last couple of years at this fine establishment. From the fabulous owners who make a point to welcome all patrons of this pub new or old to the great staff and amazing regulars who all make you feel at ease whether enjoying a quick drink after work or a couple drinks on a Sunday afternoon or at any of the amazing events that are organised to raise funds for various charities. A very warm and welcoming pub for all of the family! Finally all I can say visit the pub yourself make up your own mind you'll be pleasantly surprised. Keep up the great work Ostrich!!!

We called here after visiting Festwich which we do every year. The Ostrich is on the way back to the hotel. We have been a few years ago and the pub wasn't very welcoming, this however could be because we were strangers and I understand this. This year we had the most amazing welcome! The bar staff were amazing, other customers were really friendly as well. The DJ was brilliant, DJ Shaggy! We will definitely be coming back next year, what an amazing evening we had! Thanks for making us feel so welcome. :)

I have been coming here from when I was 18 years old and the pub has always been welcoming to anyone of colour, any race, any sexuality. They are are amazing people who talk to anyone and love to do events for the community and have done so much for charity over the years They are all amazing people, the landlord and landlady and all the staff are so easy to get one with as they are all so friendly and welcoming.

The Ostrich pub is very much a community pub. The pub caters for ALL people, no race, religion, politics or even football issues. This weekend 'Shaggy' the regular DJ is playing the tunes, City v Liverpool on Sat (fans from both clubs will be in. Sunday is the ladies football and charity events coming up. I challenge any person with any issues to chat with the owners direct before putting a false review on here.

When my friends and I (who are not white) came to this pub for a couple drinks together and as we stood at the bar minding our own business with the owner and her friends , all grown adults sat behind us, we were shocked when the landlady shouted a racist comment right infront of us suggesting her want for us to leave, as a group of young people we were made to feel threatened and unsafe by prejudice racist Landlady, head barmaid and their group of friends who all found her racist comment hilarious It’s disgusting I don’t feel safe in pub open to everyone just a short distance from my house especially because it was due to the actions of the landlady herself and after reading other reviews it seems I am not the first to experience this from the rude racist owners

Ordered a drink with me and my friends. Me and my friends are people of colours and we heard in the conner of the pub. "if they're a person of colour they can f*** off". This is not the first time i've been to this pub and felt racially discriminated

Got asked to leave because me and a friend ordered a pint of coke each then got told there is Jewish people that come in and spend more money than us I don’t drink alcohol because I drive not only that he was very disrespectful to us and tried to belittle us in front of other customers not only that I did work behind the bar there at one point and the way he speaks to staff is out of order will never be going back to that pub again gone right down hill since these new owners have taken over it

We used this pub for my dads wake. I was very surprised by the inside as I had never been before. The pub has a great history which was shared to us by the landlady and has a few small rooms inside which are lovely nooks for family gatherings, however, on this occasion we sat outside under the canopy in the garden. What an unexpected surprisingly lovely place, they put the outdoor heaters on for us and we had a really nice afternoon. They don't make their own food but the landlady sorted out a buffet for us at a brilliant price, in fact I have no idea how she did it for the money but it was a lovely spread and enjoyed by everyone. They couldn't do enough for us and it made a sad day much better to bare. I would highly recommend the Ostrich for an event, big or small, and thank the staff for everything they did.

Would not go back again, there are many better pubs in Manchester that aren’t so over the top on covid measures to the point they make it feel like they don’t want you there. Not a single smile from any of the staff.

Sad and shocked that my daughter just came home from The Ostrich very upset, after being asked to leave the premises for highlighting racism in this pub. I have heard the sound recording of this, and although my daughter raised difficult and challenging points, she did so in a calm and intelligent manner. In this day and age, it's sad to hear that landlords, who are in a position of trust and authority, are still stuck in the old fashioned empire state of mind. Do Holts train their employees? I'll be finding out.
