Good honest friendly pub not far from the city centre and train station. Great selection of Beers, Ales, Ciders and plenty of variety when it comes to spirits and mixers. Tea & Coffee available, usual bar snacks and pub grub available most days i believe. Ideal pub to spend time in and an excellent venue when the cricket is on. We had Friday night in there and great timing since it was Tapas night, we tried the whole menu and were impressed. We highly recommend you go in and give it a try.

My family has just visited for a lovely Sunday Roast to celebrate both Mother’s Day and a Birthday. Food was fantastic with proper homemade yorkies! Plenty of extra gravy was given when asked for. Staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. The pub itself had a lovely proper pub atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Went a couple of times before Christmas & went again yesterday 7/1/2022 for lunch & drinks. As a member of CAMRA, I find the drink selection excellent, the beer well kept & the prices for the area very reasonable indeed. My wife had scampi & chips followed by treacle pudding & custard & I had steak & ale pie with mash, followed by chocolate pudding & custard. The food was good & complemented my real/cask ales. Some of the ales change on a regular bases & they do a good selection of ciders as well. The staff were all friendly & helpful & will will visit again in the future when in town. Thanks everyone.

Cannot speak too highly of this pub. A fabulous selection of beautifully kept ales complemented with a draft wheat beer I’ve not been able to find anywhere else in Essex. Trish is the landlady every pub should have - hard working, personable and with a genuine interest in her customers. A proper pub and a real find.

We were enjoying a day at the Cricket and needed a meal quickly during the lunchtime break , The Orange tree was perfect , the service very prompt , we sat outside and within a few minutes our drinks and food order had been taken, the drinks arrived in short order followed by the food which was lovely and hot, basic pub food at a good price enjoyed with a nice pint.

I’ve been going to this amazing pub for a long time about 13 yrs! This place has a great atmosphere and environment with friendly staff! Trish is always very friendly and values her customers. They have a lovely range of beers and great chips! It’s a proper pub with a proper pub atmosphere! The garden has recently been improved and is now a great outdoor space. Really recommend this pub to all range of people. The good thing is it welcomes all ages! And is dog friendly.

As soon as we walked into this pub, which was recommended by a friend, we felt the special atmoshere. It encapsulates all the feelings of an old style pub, but unlike an old style pub, the beer is fresh! There were 8 real ales on when we went to the Orange Tree. The star of them all is their own House Ale; hoppy, but not over hopped. Beautiful ale. The atmosphere, the beer, the food... all are second to none. Our thanks to Lucy, who kept an eye on the level of ale left in our glasses and offered to bring new pints as requested. Keep real ale alive. Visit the orange Tree!

I made the mistake of making a special trip into town, & a long trek up to Lower Anchor Street, on Saturday to visit this pub, whose advertised opening time was 10am. Although there was somebody inside the pub, & I tried the door several times, by about 8 minutes past, tired of standing outside in the rain with nowhere to shelter, I finally gave up. This was appalling customer service. This place deserves to go bust. I shall never return.

A great venue, a ‘proper old school pub’ so many ales to choose from. Friendly and welcoming staff, good prices, toilets and bar/seating areas very clean and tidy. I look forward to returning soon

This is a pub which does excellent beer. Some beers are almost always on (Oscar Mild, Hophead) but the rest is an every changing menu of well kept beer. Looks like a typical back-street local - and the lounge is far too much like someone's front-room for my taste) but the bar is much more traditional style. A small beer patio out the back which is surprisingly quiet. Toilets recently redone and a far cry from the typical pub! It's a bit of a small s sports pub in that rugby, cricket and even on occasion football can be viewed (but rugby is the main one here - pre covid 6N matchdays are pretty packed).Staff good and friendly - and know their beer. And Trish could serve as the role-model for the ideal landlady.Food - weekly menu changes. Usual pub style and you could sum it up as cheap and cheerful. You wouldn't travel miles to eat here but food isn't the reason why you'd visit anyway.Covid - I've been here a few times since the lockdown eased and have always been asked for contact details. They'd expanded the outside area to offer more space and re-jigged things inside to provide SD seating. Payment is contactless (mind you I haven't tried to pay with cash).

I met a friend from the Essex CC for lunch for a catch up and reserved a table as I was on crutches at the time and needed a comfortable seat. We enjoyed a lovely lunch catching up recent news and on our successful season etc with a couple of great real ales to wash it down!. I would certainly recommend for a quiet lunch although to avoid disappointment it is worth booking a table as I was advised it can get busy especially for Sunday lunch.

We met up here for a few beers prior to the Essex v Kent evening game last week as it’s only about 5 minutes or so to the ground.Stacked with real ales and beers I’ve never of, I decided to stick with lager but the kind and friendly lady behind the bar let us sample their wares. We did the right thing sticking with lager...Nice pub though and will return next time I’m in town to see Essex again.

The Orange Tree is a fantastic, traditional little pub just a few minutes walk from Chelmsford city centre &very close to Essex County Cricket ground. All the staff are very friendly. Excellent Home cooked food is available lunchtimes &on Thursday and Friday evenings. There is a very good standard menu plus a wide range of "blackboard specials" available. We had the home-made steak and kidney pudding with new potatoes & veg with lashings of hot gravy and 2crispy fishcakes with Lyonnaise potatoes &salad. Both were delicious. If you like real ale then this is the place to come with a range of 7-8 ales from different breweries on tap plus a wide range of bottled beers, ciders &spirits (including a "Gin of the week")Prices are very reasonable with specials ranging from £6.50 to £8.50 &most of the ales less than £4 a pint.Well worth the visit!

Stumbled on this pub on a Saturday morning and they had just started to offer breakfast. It was their 2nd weekend. In short - they smashed it.Nothing was too much trouble and we were very well looked after by Naomi who was friendly and efficient.Everything you can wish for from bacon/sausage sandwiches to the full English. Everything was freshly prepared and piping hot - the chef (who came out after our meal - nice touch) was clearly on top of her game.A great find and we will be back very soon.

We visited here for a bite to eat before watching the Cricket round the corner. The food is traditional pub food, ploughman's, scampi etc. we were a table of five, only three meals turned up and not much apology given when we asked where the rest of the order was. However, when it arrived it was very well cooked and hot, The lads said the beer was good.Traditional pub, nice bar area, dart board etc

We come here for lunch as it’s round the corner from the office. There is a lovely courtyard type of garden to have lunch and we normally come in here with our 11 year old in tow. From experience the paninis, baguettes and ploughman’s are great. However, the sandwiches are a big disappointment as they are made with very obvious supermarket sliced bread. I was disappointed as given that this is a traditional pub I was hoping for crusty or farmhouse bread. We haven’t eaten a hot meal here because we are snatching a bite. The staff are friendly but I think a new carpet is needed to get away from the freshly soaked beer smell. There are plenty of real ales to try.

Wanting somewhere to watch the midday kick-off north London derby at short notice on Saturday with my 11 year old son, I passed this pub and saw it was showing the game so came in, sat down to watch and ordered lunch. With 10 minutes of the match left and one goal separating the teams, the match was unceremoneously turned off, with no warning or discussion with customers (of whom there were several watching the game) and the warm-up to a rugby match appeared on the screen. It was clear to anyone that my son and I had come in to watch the football, and the barmaid was more than happy to take my money for our lunch (not cheap) without telling us they would be switching it off before the end. I understand that this is a "Rugby Pub", but this is not how it is done. Contempt for customers is not an attractive quality for a pub and I am sure with their current attitude, this one will only end up attracting Rugby supporters on matchdays with no Sky TV at home.

I had intended to eat at the Queen's Head a few yards farther along Lower Anchor Street (it used to be called 'The Partners' in the Eighties), but as they didn't serve food at weekends I enjoyed a quick pint before moving on to the Orange Tree.

Such a lovely, rustic 'proper' pub! No frilly bits, nothing fancy just a warm atmosphere, lovely staff and good ales and ports. We've been coming here as our 'regular' since we moved to Chelmsford a few years ago, it's not quite the nearest pub to us but it's worth the extra walk. The food looks good though we are yet to try it.Good, well kept Ales, nice selection if Ports (usually 2/3) and a good price for Baileys! They also appear to have a large selection of Whisky.Recommended

Popped into the pub for lunch during Cricket at County Ground. Still outstanding food, service and good ambiance. Hadn't visited for a while but the decor is certainly new and it really has retained the old feel whilst improving it into 2015. The OT is siuated 10 mins walk from Chelmsford town centre, ably run by mine host Silent Mike & his team. They offer a good selection of cask ales, with frequently changing guest beers. It is a great pub for Rugby lovers, also is close to Chelmsford cricket ground, & often will have a Premiership or International footie match on (sometimes even lesser leagues). The staff are efficient, friendly, welcoming. Beer prices are average for the area. Any food I've ever eaten there has been acceptable as a minimum, but usually good to excellent pub fare, reasonably priced. The mens' toilet could do with a makeover (still), but I did once overhear that that may be on the agenda. There is good support from locals.
