The New London Restaurant and Lounge in Chelmsford

We were a group of four with our baby in a high chair…flawless and finding that gem was superb for us. The ambience and greeting in the place is really nice… The menu has been so thought out you wouldn’t want a better Sunday lunch… Yes we went on a Sunday and only a few tables hence the superb service but to go for a first impression was great. The food was so good and on point that I am going back. I highly recommend this restaurant.

My husband & I went to the tasting menu with wine pairing evening. The food was excellent . We’ve eaten at many Michelin guide & Michelin star restaurants & the food was as good. Service was excellent too. Entertaining interludes from the wine supplier in between courses made a memorable evening. Congratulations to the team at New London.

Last night we attended their special tasting menu with wine pairing which proved to be an evening of total indulgence. The food was of an extraordinarily high standard to the extent that we considered it superior to both The Kitchin in Edinburgh & Paul Ainsworth at No 6 Padstow. It is little wonder that at the end of the evening the customers asked to see the kitchen staff in order to give them a resounding round of appreciative applause. Combine this with some excellent wines which we were introduced to by someone who knew how to describe them with eloquence & wit in a totally unpretentious way, throw in service that was highly efficient & professional whilst retaining a relaxed atmosphere and you have a totally triumphant evening.

Last time we ate in The New London we were slightly disappointed - but not this time - it was excellent. The only slight downside was that it was empty, apart from the 3 of us, and so we do hope it survives. We chose the set menu and every dish was lovely. All 3 of us had the smoked salmon starter which was really delicately flavoured and the baked capers were a tasty addition. The fish of the day, the risotto and the steak were all delicious - and just the right size helping. The desserts were all well presented and tasted good. The service was excellent. All in all a very enjoyable meal. It is not cheap - but worth the price.

Food and service is amazing, great ambience and interior. We would definitely go back again, as menu changes regularly and you are truly looked after from arriving till leaving. I can’t remember the last time I have been asked to leave my coat in any restaurant in Essex. Hospitality still has a meaning in the new London. Truly professional and a breath of fresh air.

Sunday Roast here is very nice would recommend!

This restaurant is by far the best in Chelmsford. All four of us had the most amazing food. We all had something different so we could have a little taste of different courses . Each one was perfect. Beautifully presented and by our lovely waiter Andy. We were looked after from the moment we got there until we left. Highly recommend this fab restaurant. We have visited with different friends/family on many occasions and every one of them have had a wonderful time and enjoyed the food immensely. Thank you to Justin , Andy and your fantastic team. You did us proud as always.

Visited this restaurant a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Being Coeliac it’s quite tricky finding decent restaurants to enjoy a special night out in. Sadly tonight I feel bitterly disappointed with the meal, the lack of attention to detail and the false claim that whole dishes are gluten free. I looked on line before our visit then asked for a gluten free menu on arrival. I chose the steak as my main then the waitress came back and explained I couldn’t have the crispy potatoes or onion rings as they were cooked with gluten containing foods, I was then offered an alternative of jersey potatoes. No substitute was offered for the onion rings but I was happy that at least it was checked. Then came the ‘gluten free’ dessert menu. I asked for the lemon posset with the poppy seed shortbread. The waitress put it down in front of me and walked away. As she passed me I asked about the shortbread. She replied that I couldn’t have it as it contained gluten. I feel as a restaurant with a decent reputation you need to make clear that you don’t provide gluten free but you CAN offer gluten free options. You should also deduct a nominal amount off if meals are not as advertised. For some gluten free is a choice, in my case it’s a total allergy and serious. Very sad that we won’t be returning and based on reviews I’ve read where you are critised and don’t take it well, just think about what you are offering to people that are eating at your restaurant and come there with confidence after checking on line first. Frustrating. As a last point, the lemon posset was way too runny.

Went with the wife for lunch on father's Day. I think the best way to sum it up is actually my wife's comment to me which was simply 'I can't fault any part of it'. The Sunday Roast was absolutely excellent (beef, and lamb), and the starters and desert were equally good. This was complimented by faultless friendly service, and no adverse comments when I asked for mint sauce, AND horseradish with my lamb! My only regret is having driven past it many times I didn't try it before. Highly recommended.

Another great evening at The New London, first try of the latest menu. Greeted by Andy and Jack who are always so lovely, gin and tonic at the bar with a nose at the menu and then onto dinner. I had the warm jersey potato salad which was incredible and my friend had the scallops which are always top-notch. The lamb rump main and steak were also the best I've had in here - overall very very pleased!!

We went here as a couple for an anniversary based on other food reports. The weather was fine so we had a pre dinner drink in the front area. When our table was ready we were seated and there were only 2 tables occupied, however this soon changed as more diners arrived and atmosphere improved. At first we thought the portions a bit small but they were really tasty and filling. Drinks were a bit on the pricey side (12.00 per 250ml Red wine) but overall the experience was very good. Parking in the area can be a problem but there are car parks within a few minutes walk.

Food and service, exceptional. Such a great restaurant; staff really attentive, without being intrusive and food was absolutely spot on. Thoroughly recommend scallop starter and chateaubriand definitely worth every penny. The epitomy of 'you get what you pay for'. Can't recommend enough.

Decor was lovely. Welcome was also great. Shame about the poor service that followed; having to keep getting up to chase items. Clear our plates, ask for butter, etc. Cheese board was the saddest I've seen for quite some time, it actually made me laugh. The roast looked spot on when it came out, the carrots and kale were great, but everything else was, bland, unseasoned, cool temperatures, the potatoes were earthy and hard. Staff were terse, congregating around the bar instead of serving. Booking noted it was a birthday meal. Not even wished a happy birthday. Thanks guys. Don't bother. They didn't.

We had a family meal for 5, celebrating 2 birthdays as my daughter recommended it. The food was wonderful. Well cooked, presented, and very tasty. My son was not sure what was what on the menu. The waiter offered to explain to him. I would recommend this restaurant to all.

We have been to The New London several times for special occasions and last night the food was perfectly cooked and inventive as always. We had steak fillet and guinea fowl for mains, and sticky date pudding and apple parfait for desserts. The wine was excellent (my wife loves that you keep Rapaura Springs on the list!) and the meal was topped off nicely with two amaretto coffees. A perfect meal and friendly service throughout.

Lunch from the a la carte menu and we’re very very happy. Not sure if Chelmsford could deliver on a Thursday lunchtime for a birthday. Starter, chateaubriand, tarte Tatin and cheese all better than expected. Thx. Needless to say and wine and port were not bad either!

We had not been to a fine dining restaurant in Chelmsford for quite a long time and so we were not quite sure what to expect. The New London proved to be a very pleasant surprise. We liked the simplicity of the lunch set menu. The food was excellent - every one of both our 3 courses was really enjoyable and for us had the right balance of taste and quantity. The service was superb. I know the place was quiet but someties that leads to the staff seeming to resent the interruption of having to serve - not at The New London I am pleased to say. The cleanliness was exemplary. My only small points of criticism were that the red wine was a bit on the warm side - a nob of ice from the water jug resolved that, and there was no pork on the menu & pork is my favourite meat. Would I recommend it and would we go again - definitely.

We celebrated my wonderful mum's 60th Birthday here with close friends and family. I made a group reservation for my mum's 60th Birthday. The initial contact with the restaurant was very good, friendly, welcoming and helpful. I popped my head through the door and met the manager in person to help make a decision if this was the right place to host. We pre ordered from a menu (up to date seasonal menu) with a nice selection to suit everyone's needs. The service was great, I found the manager and staff organized and accommodated the special occasion. Guest names placed at the table and food was served smoothly to each guest at the table. The wine was served. It was the perfect venue for a small intimate celebration. We were in contact regularly with the lead up to the big day to ensure all went as well as possible. The food was delicious, cooked well with nice flavours. Side were a good portion. We had a section at the back just for us. Had a very small table to put our birthday cakes on. All guest had a wonderful time and enjoyed the food and venue. Its a lovely modern, contemporary and cozy venue with a nice ambiance. We felt somewhat rushed to leave 20mins before our time was up, which put pressure on the person organising the party. As a result it ended promptly and would have been nicer to end our time at the venue without rushing out the door. Saturdays are their busy days at the restaurant. Booking ahead strongly advised. We were able to pre order food and wine - they had our Prosecco on ice when we arrived. There was enough space to put a large number 60 balloon display at the corner of our area, which added a special touch. The organisers was ok with that. After the meal the group went to a nice pub, only minutes walk away from The New London Restaurants & Lounge which was recommended by the manager. Thank you for that! I would recommend this restaurant to my friends and family and I would love to go back there myself again one day. One of the best restaurants I have been to. Opted for set menu for 2 people, loved each and every dish. Wonderfully presented and tasted even better. Surprisingly we were the only ones in the restaurant when we walked in on a Thursday afternoon. Highly recommended in Chelmsford. Cheers.

The bottomless brunch on Saturday afternoons are excellent. Food is delicious and the waiters are very generous with the Prosecco. Great ambiance to the restaurant. Highly recommended.

First visit , Sunday lunch for 4 people. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be returning. Restaurant is decorated in a sleek and contemporary way, well set out and very clean. Service was prompt , efficient and friendly. Food was all of a consistently high standard , well flavoured and the roast beef was cooked to perfection. Special mention for the duck fat roast potatoes, the best I’ve tasted for some time! Highly recommended

Incredible meal as always! This is definitely one of our favourite restaurants in Essex. We always have the best meal with outstanding service. If you haven't tried their Sunday lunch - you are missing out!

We are regular customers at the New London. Andy and the staff are always attentive and friendly. The food is fantastic and the rotation of the menu every couple of months is great to try new things with some longstanding favourites there each time too. We also recently attended a champagne tasting evening which was very enjoyable. Looking forward to our next visit, which will likely be very soon!

We were invited recently to a champagne tasting evening at the New London which was fun and really interesting, have even retained some of the information! It was also the best excuse to stay for dinner afterwards which was as fabulous as always, the food was exceptional (as ever) as was the service. We have been to the New London many times over the years for dinner, Sunday lunch, Saturday Prosecco brunch and have always had a fabulous time, look forward to the next time!

My husband and I attended a pre-dinner Champagne tasting with the team from Joseph Perrier. We tasted four different varieties - and they were all superb. It was a really informative hour and we enjoyed mixing with other guests too. We then had dinner, which as ever, was faultless. The presentation and quality is always excellent. A great menu choice and really friendly service. Andy is always the star of the show! What a brilliant restaurant manager he is. We cant wait to go back!!

Honestly, was surprised the food was not as good as I have experienced before. Soup was cold, Turkey was dry and portions seem to be smaller especially the dessert. Service as always was amazing.

The service was great can’t fault the friendliness and professionalism of the team. The food was delicious but unfortunately not perfect, my steak was medium rare and was chard on the outside and quite chewy for £34 I expected a much tender piece of meat. The ice cream was shards of ice which indicates it had been defrosted and re-frozen. The partridge had not been filleted correctly and had small sharp bones in it. The rest of the food was enjoyable.
