Friendly staff, great range of beers and lovely food (beef bourguignon pie and aloo burger); a great pub.

We went for a birthday party in the garden. What an experience in a fantastic space. Highly recommended.

Fantastic! We had a large group of 35 people and basically had an entire room to ourselves. All of the staff were so helpful, friendly, efficient & easy going. The roasts were excellent - highly recommend. All of our party agreed. Thank you for looking after us. :)

Great place, fish and chips are delicious, but the bar is always crowded and the ordering is a bit disorderly

We went here in a large group for Sunday lunch. We had submitted our orders days before our booking to help out. It’s always a really great pub but the lunch was very disappointing. Most of the dinners were cold. The meat elements were hot but many of us had cold Yorkshire puddings, cold gravy and lukewarm stuffing. I was hungry but left most of my meal ,the cold gravy in particular spoiled the whole meal. Our server and staff in general were lovely but the roast was of an unacceptable standard and we were all disappointed.

The Open House has gone massively downhill. The food is overpriced, the portions are small and it is nothing you couldn’t make better at home. Real shame.

I am not sure if it's changed hands or there is a new chef but I thought the food choice and quality had significantly deteriorated since I last ate here, maybe a year ago. Everything seem deep fried, lacked imagination and was a bit dry and tastless. Still has a nice atmosphere and the service was good, just such a shame about the food.

Awful Sunday experience. The back door was propped open (they wouldn’t shut it) so it was cold. The roast took over an hour and come out. When it did it was small and cold. The cauliflower cheese also cold. The Yorkshire pudding rock hard. When I complained the manager didn’t understand the problem, argued about the food as she thought it was acceptable and was rude. There are much better options in Brighton. Shame.

All is fantastic at this great pub.. Garden is fab both front and back..Cocktails fabulous, The staff are just the best.

Had a decent Sunday lunch. They were great about supporting us with our kids allergies.

This place is enormous! The food is stunning and really reasonable prices. Simply fabulous!

It is a beautiful pub with a great garden that catches the evening sun, lovely staff and beer. But there was a group of loud drunk obnoxious men verging on racist, homophobic misogynistic 'banter' at 5.30pm. The barman tried to get them to pipe down, but put me off being there.

I’ve been to this pub many times as a local recently visited a couple of times over the last 3 weeks on a Sunday for roast dinner. The food is always tasty but on both visits the food wasn’t hot but warm/cold. Normally very busy on a Sunday for the roast dinners but on my two visits for food and one just for drinks over 3 consecutive weeks it was very quiet. Could be due to the school holidays could be the warm/ cold food. Hope they improve as it’s a great pub with an amazing garden.

Love this pub, great space & outside seating options. Feels cosy but big & not too busy or hectic. A variety of drinks & snacks. We had a bowl of olives & some loaded fries which were both delicious but felt a little expensive for the portion size. Quickly becoming a local for us 💙

Fabulous garden, lovely staff. The food however is simply not worth the ferociously high prices. £15 for a standard pizza which was over-laden with tomato puree and undercooked. £20 if you want cheese and bacon with your burger. Love the pub but the food franchise really lets the experience down.

Big place. Coped well with busy crowds. Several inside and outside areas.

I had nachos priced at £12!..(see attached photo)…all the ingredients were low grade catering quality..not one item was made fresh ..with the exception of a spring onion..at this price point it is shameful!..my partner’s pizza was similarly low grade and undercooked!..I’ve seen managerial responses claiming to take on board similar criticisms..clearly that is a vacuous placation for the sake of damage control on review sites..nice pub with lovely garden but food does not reflect this!..

At about 7:30PM on Sunday July 14, I went to the Bar for a drink when Dan the manager quite aggressively said “ I won't be serving you today, I said “why not I want an explanation” eventually, he agreed to give an explanation outside. As he stopped on the back door entrance step he said “you have upset a member of staff “, I said “I haven't had an argument or upset anyone”, he replied “you told a one of the girls to F.... Off” to which I replied “It's a lie I have never sworn at anyone here”. He held my arms just below my shoulders and suggested I stand outside for an hour. I took this to mean he was insisting that I should leave and went on my way home to watch the England Match. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable in any organisation and in the hospitality industry it is ridiculous. Reply to Response from the Owner Hi Dan, Without prejudice, I stand by my statement. Nice place, nice food, nice drink

Non-existing service. Sunday roast was good. Menu is different and portions smaller than 6 months ago. Ordered a portion of chipirones as starter for 12 pounds, never came, once asked for it, all the staff cared was, who have we given food for free... Finally got the portion, all of it could fit in one hand (pic). It was frozen, and probably not more than 1 pound in value.... Overall... Food ok, apart from the chipirones, Service big no no, specially after knowing the mistake and did nothing after.

Food is good but the toilets are pretty bad

Huge modern pub with good beer selection and nice cosy garden. Blues on the sound system and nice and quiet when we visited. Probably have to go back to taste the grub.

Good food and good selection of drinks, great outside area - does events during the week like open mic, etc

Open House assisted us in hosting our engagement party and it was amazing. Everyone who attended our engagement party raved about how good it was! The staff and manager were very friendly, relaxed and accomodating. In planning our event Open House staff were very responsive and friendly and even provided catering suggestions. The food (buffet) was amazing - the space was just perfect and even though the football coincided with our event - no issues at all. Lovely pub - lovely staff - if you are thinking of holding an event in Brighton please consider having it at Open House. Fantastic! Thank you Open House Lots of love Gemma and Scott

I only had a few drinks here! It was a lovely summer evening and we were in the back garden. Very enjoyable, lovely venue. The people who had food seemed happy with their food. Staff would come past occasionally and take the empty glasses away. All round good experience

Delicious Sunday lunch today there were 13 of us so not easy to cater for, all the food came out together and the staff were friendly, helpful and clearly a great team. Thankyou Chefs, Molly, Charlie, Lara, Lucas, Amelie and James for a great experience.

A friend booked a group of us in whilst in the area. Our experience was very different to other recent reviews. We were treated really well all the time we were there. The service was quick and efficient, the food delicious and care taken of vegans and vegetarians. Left food was boxed without being requested. Overall a most pleasant time!

Great beer and really nice beer garden.

A roast so good I didn’t let contractions stop me from enjoying it. Yes, you read that right. We were meant to enjoy a delicious roast dinner at the pub back in April 2024, when I started contractions the night before. Fast forward to 3pm-ish on the Sunday and the staff managed to arrange for our dinner to be boxed up so my mum and sister could bring it round for us to eat before the ‘main event’. This roast was what kept my energy and spirits up throughout a 42 hour labour, and was the only thing I could manage to consume that day (except for a handful of crisps, a Lucozade sport and an apple or two) between contractions. The OH has always been our top Brighton pub, from when we lived on Springfield Road and even after we moved 10 mins up the road, we still call it our local!! Baby has even visited twice since his arrival and seems to enjoy it too! 👶🏼 If you’re looking for a cheerful atmosphere, an amazing beer garden, fantastic beers on tap, delicious food and wonderful staff, the OH is the pub for you! Plus, if you need some fuel to power you through childbirth, I’d recommend theirs! 🫶 ♥️ 🍻 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The pub and the staff were lovely, outdoor space is great! The issue was with the food. It was on the higher end of pub food prices but the quality and flavour was like something you get from a festival van :( chips tastey like oil, the filling to my fish finger sandwich was flavourless.

Not your normal back street boozer.. Another hidden gem. This venue is next to London Road station and 10 mins walk from London road.

This used to be a friendly welcoming pub, but our recent experience has disappointed us greatly. Their treatment of my friend with Parkinson’s was absolutely disgraceful. They should be ashamed of themselves. No apology forthcoming inspite of explaining the situation.

Spacious pub with the range of Laine beers on. Large outside area that catches the sun. Worth a visit.

It was generally ok here but nothing special. Having been coming for a number of years I think the beer selection needs a bit of work. The Laine brewery options have been knocking around for a while in Brighton and are pretty average and overpriced. The Bluebell ale wasn’t too bad but was a bit expensive for what it is. Didn’t eat as the food menu wasn’t cheap either. Not notable enough to have relatively high prices in here. Staff were somewhat friendly without going the extra mile. Nothing to write home about. One of those pubs to have a flyer in and move on.

An old favourite. The open house has remained a great pub for many years. Good service, a nice space inside and out and historically good food, didn't eat on this occasion.

Our 1st time at Open House. Our requested small size roasts were tasty and well presented. The side dish of cauliflower cheese was scrumptious too!

Great pub and fantastic Sunday roast

I come here quite often but it’s going down hill. Staff are particularly bad atm; or at least one older bloke in particular, I won’t repeat the conversation as it would identify me, but I wasnt amused with his answers, which I think he thought was funny or witty, it wasn’t! Ordered pizza and they were revolting, undercooked, covered in oil and unimaginative toppings. Restaurant was uncomfortably cold and the rude staff member was enough for me to think actually I won’t bother returning. Prices are such now that going out anywhere is expensive, so it really needs to be a great experience each time, which regrettably this wasn’t.

The prices are crazy. £18 for a mediocre vegan burger is not the one 🫠

Usually attend special events in the lounge, where the acoustics are good for talking without needing to raise voices above music. The tables have proven a good size for card and board game meets. They also stock a nice selection of soft drinks, as well as alcohol.

Came in about 22:40, expecting a quick pint after travelling from London. Was told no service at this time despite advertised hours till 23:00 (some sites say 23:30). No wonder the pub was empty! I won't be back.

So this is a nice vibe pub very chilled and good staff , however the food leaves alot to be desired. I had the angus burger which is the worst burger I've had , the meat was very cheap and very hard. For £15 there has to be a degree of standard and this was very very poor. Wouldn't eat again from here

A cold night in Brighton made warmer by the local IPA with chasers.

This pub has been excellent for years, playing the most incredible music that welcomes you like a warm embrace. But.... depending on who is working now, the music is sporadically terrible and service is nonchalant at best. Such a shame!

So last year on Christmas eve we booked a family Christmas meal and it was fantastic , our Mum/Nana passed earlier this year so we decided to make it a tradition every year because it was the last christmas meal we had with her , before booking for this year I made sure I looked to see if they had a christmas menu and they did ! turkey and beef ect plus festive puddings , even saved the menu to my laptop to show my family , so we get there christmas eve and the only festive food was sarnies and a festive pig in blankets pizza ( let that sink in ! pig in blankets pizza!! ) , I asked why there was no chritmas roasts and the landlady played dumb and even questioned if we had come last year .. she served us last year!! looked like they had over booked and decided not to roll with the christmas roast menu because it was proper packed in there , 2 of us ordered steak which come luke warm and the chips were cold and served on cold plates , the other 2 of us ordered a burger and a wrap which were MEH! such a shame ! it was not only us that had booked for a christmas roast we talked to other familys that had done the same ... we were gutted

Sunday lunch , can only say it was the best Sunday lunch I have had ! one pork /one veggie dish , great presentation , fresh food , lots of it and so well cooked , the staff were also Fab , checking in to see how every thing was and getting us what we needed , such a lovey team , I think there may have been some changes in managment recently ? if this is the result keep it up !!Thanks for a lovely experience and well done to the chef

Booked our team Christmas meal at the Open House. Nice spacious pub meant it didn’t feel we were disrupting other people who were there. Ordering process was easy and the staff knew whose dishes they had which meant people didn’t have to remember what they’d ordered. Portion sizes were good and people who’d had staters struggled to eat all of their puddings. Allergies were checked, but there was an issue with the crackers not being nut free - which was quickly rectified by the staff member. Will be back and looking forward to being able to sit in the beer garden in the summer

Plenty of seating area beautiful garden but food awful . Was served cold and the burgers were cheap and horrid. I have been coming here for years and the change to the kitchen means I will not be coming back . Shame

We travelled over from Portsmouth for my sister-in-laws birthday, and as soon as we walked through the door I was really impressed with the atmosphere, decor and overall vibe. We went for Sunday lunch and it was spectacular!! My wife and I haven’t stopped talking about it and that was over a week ago 😅 We’d happily travel back just for the roast!!

Menu not as good as it used to be, what happened to the interesting specials on the board? - Food very average.

It was a really busy evening with lots of Brighton fans. One of my starters (calamari) wasn’t brilliant but the staff were so lovely and quick to respond and apologised. With a mix of a menu change and a hectic night, the staff were amazing and incredibly polite. So glad this is our local

Gorgeous outdoor space which you'd probably never guess from the outside. Really great to have a couple of drinks on a summer evening with a friend. The fish and chips looked good so I've made a note for next time 😉

A group of us met here as it was fairly central for all of us. Easy to get to from London Road train station. The food was good, it arrived quite soon after and was piping hot and delicious. Soft drinks (as with most places) were expensive. I would certainly return.

Possibly one of the worst roasts I've had in a very long time. It's a great pub but I would recommend getting a Sunday roast elsewhere. It's a shame because the used to be so good here.

A hidden gem! Delicious veggie roast, and love that you can get a "small" portion (which justified getting the cauliflower cheese as a side!) Definitely recommend.

Great Sunday roasts, not been to a pub with 3 vegan roast options before, plus veggie and vegan pizza choices too, this is what a pub menu should look like. Great food, usual Brighton prices!

This place is so over hyped. The food is good not great, and definitely not worth what they charge for it. I had roast beef which my knife struggled to get through. The veggies were really good, but the Yorkshire pudding was hard and dry. The service is mediocre too.

I am a coeliac, so have a severe allergy to gluten. I am always nervous when I go to eat anywhere for the first time. Had a chat with the person taking our order, who then had a chat with the kitchen. They didn’t disappoint, I had the gf fish and chips, which was great. No problems. Would definitely go again, and recommend to other coeliacs.

Usually enjoy food at Open house but today’s food was so disappointing. The roast (beef and vegetarian) was small, vegetables under cooked, hardly any gravy and potatoes didn’t taste like they had been roasted. Nothing tasted right. Beef was meant to come with horseradish sauce but none given. Staff didn’t check to see if we had condiments and I couldn’t find available staff to get mustard or to ask for more gravy. Roast so dry. Very disappointing for the price and sadly todays roast has put us off eating at the Open house. Location and staff lovely though so sorry for bad review.

Went to the bar because beer tasted off. Waited patiently whilst others were served. Eventually I was the only person at the bar with three members of staff who totally ignored me. Tried to attract their attention but they just talked amongst themselves. Gave up. Plenty of other pubs nearby

Great atmosphere, Superb Staff!

Five of us went for Sunday lunch today .... I had the Beef, my friends between them had Pork, Chicken and a Vegetarian option .. all said how tasty it was .. good portion sizes, friendly staff and a good atmosphere .. and not too noisy .. what more could you ask for?

Wow, this place has gone from strength to strength, I was amazed to see the new extension and extended garden. It's my favourite local to work. The bar staff are always friend too.

My partner and I booked a table for a Sunday roast as we hadn't been here before. Arrived mid-afternoon and the pub was not too busy. Told our table number, which was a bit confusing, as the table with that number on did not have our name on it as we were told. Turns out it was on a different table nearby, so no hassle, just swapped the numbers round. Staff were attentive and we were served quickly. £12 for a couple of pints is fairly standard these days. Menu looked good and we went for the roast beef and roast lamb. Although the meal was fine, it was pretty clear it had all been pre-cooked and just reheated. Problem with that was that the gravy wasn't hot, so the meal itself was not really hot enough. Beef was lovely but lamb was a bit fatty. Overall, it was a decent enough meal as we were both starving but we also ordered some cauliflower cheese, which was OK, but was a tad undercooked. We ordered a bottle of wine, which we were told was sold out but they offered a more expensive one for the same price. The landlady seemed on it, with a young staff who were all fine. Free wifi was good. I agree with one of the other reviews about the lighting. For some reason, while we were finishing our drinks the landlady came round and dimmed all the lights, which made it very dark in there. Atmosphere is one thing, but this didn't help! Good pub for families with kids as there's plenty of space. Would we come here again....probably....would we eat there again....maybe, but it's definitely not a fine dining pub.

This is an old favourite. Good beer and wine and food and a lovely garden.

I booked a table for a 50th birthday celebration, the reserved table was squeezed into the corner of the extended area, with zero atmosphere and limited accessibility. Luckily there were tables free near the bar so we sat there instead. There were 16 of us in the end, we all ate so we spent literally £100’s, unfortunately the food was terrible. Zero taste/ flavours, dry and over cooked, no attention to detail, no salad/ coleslaw etc. with the burgers and other meals. Nobody had a decent meal and the prices of the meals are laughable for what you get. Also, unfortunately some of the bar staff were rude, unhelpful and unfriendly which for a Saturday night in a popular and busy pub seemed strange? This has always been a go to pub having lived in Brighton for 20 years, but I wouldn’t waste money on eating here again.

Went for Sunday roast. Had to pre-order. Didn't have most stuff on the menu and confusion among staff at what they did have. Food was average. Plenty of vegan options and dogs welcome.

This is my local pub for a good reason. Staff are amazing food is outstanding and being gf the menu is perfect and doesn't comprise on taste. Best beer garden in Brighton. A must visit for everyone and convenient as next to London Road train station. 5 star.
