Great pub and fantastic Sunday roast

I come here quite often but it’s going down hill. Staff are particularly bad atm; or at least one older bloke in particular, I won’t repeat the conversation as it would identify me, but I wasnt amused with his answers, which I think he thought was funny or witty, it wasn’t! Ordered pizza and they were revolting, undercooked, covered in oil and unimaginative toppings. Restaurant was uncomfortably cold and the rude staff member was enough for me to think actually I won’t bother returning. Prices are such now that going out anywhere is expensive, so it really needs to be a great experience each time, which regrettably this wasn’t.

The prices are crazy. £18 for a mediocre vegan burger is not the one 🫠

Usually attend special events in the lounge, where the acoustics are good for talking without needing to raise voices above music. The tables have proven a good size for card and board game meets. They also stock a nice selection of soft drinks, as well as alcohol.

Came in about 22:40, expecting a quick pint after travelling from London. Was told no service at this time despite advertised hours till 23:00 (some sites say 23:30). No wonder the pub was empty! I won't be back.

So this is a nice vibe pub very chilled and good staff , however the food leaves alot to be desired. I had the angus burger which is the worst burger I've had , the meat was very cheap and very hard. For £15 there has to be a degree of standard and this was very very poor. Wouldn't eat again from here

A cold night in Brighton made warmer by the local IPA with chasers.

This pub has been excellent for years, playing the most incredible music that welcomes you like a warm embrace. But.... depending on who is working now, the music is sporadically terrible and service is nonchalant at best. Such a shame!

So last year on Christmas eve we booked a family Christmas meal and it was fantastic , our Mum/Nana passed earlier this year so we decided to make it a tradition every year because it was the last christmas meal we had with her , before booking for this year I made sure I looked to see if they had a christmas menu and they did ! turkey and beef ect plus festive puddings , even saved the menu to my laptop to show my family , so we get there christmas eve and the only festive food was sarnies and a festive pig in blankets pizza ( let that sink in ! pig in blankets pizza!! ) , I asked why there was no chritmas roasts and the landlady played dumb and even questioned if we had come last year .. she served us last year!! looked like they had over booked and decided not to roll with the christmas roast menu because it was proper packed in there , 2 of us ordered steak which come luke warm and the chips were cold and served on cold plates , the other 2 of us ordered a burger and a wrap which were MEH! such a shame ! it was not only us that had booked for a christmas roast we talked to other familys that had done the same ... we were gutted

Sunday lunch , can only say it was the best Sunday lunch I have had ! one pork /one veggie dish , great presentation , fresh food , lots of it and so well cooked , the staff were also Fab , checking in to see how every thing was and getting us what we needed , such a lovey team , I think there may have been some changes in managment recently ? if this is the result keep it up !!Thanks for a lovely experience and well done to the chef

Booked our team Christmas meal at the Open House. Nice spacious pub meant it didn’t feel we were disrupting other people who were there. Ordering process was easy and the staff knew whose dishes they had which meant people didn’t have to remember what they’d ordered. Portion sizes were good and people who’d had staters struggled to eat all of their puddings. Allergies were checked, but there was an issue with the crackers not being nut free - which was quickly rectified by the staff member. Will be back and looking forward to being able to sit in the beer garden in the summer

Plenty of seating area beautiful garden but food awful . Was served cold and the burgers were cheap and horrid. I have been coming here for years and the change to the kitchen means I will not be coming back . Shame

Nice local pub, a bit expensive, but it is Brighton

We travelled over from Portsmouth for my sister-in-laws birthday, and as soon as we walked through the door I was really impressed with the atmosphere, decor and overall vibe. We went for Sunday lunch and it was spectacular!! My wife and I haven’t stopped talking about it and that was over a week ago 😅 We’d happily travel back just for the roast!!

Menu not as good as it used to be, what happened to the interesting specials on the board? - Food very average.

We love the open house! Simple as that, its been our "local" for a few years and we know we can pop in any time of day or spend all evening there! Cheers team!

It was a really busy evening with lots of Brighton fans. One of my starters (calamari) wasn’t brilliant but the staff were so lovely and quick to respond and apologised. With a mix of a menu change and a hectic night, the staff were amazing and incredibly polite. So glad this is our local

Great place to have a birthday party. We had a fantastic buffet and the staff couldn’t have been more attentive. Best pub in town to get everyone together. Would highly recommend.

Gorgeous outdoor space which you'd probably never guess from the outside. Really great to have a couple of drinks on a summer evening with a friend. The fish and chips looked good so I've made a note for next time 😉

A group of us met here as it was fairly central for all of us. Easy to get to from London Road train station. The food was good, it arrived quite soon after and was piping hot and delicious. Soft drinks (as with most places) were expensive. I would certainly return.

Possibly one of the worst roasts I've had in a very long time. It's a great pub but I would recommend getting a Sunday roast elsewhere. It's a shame because the used to be so good here.

A hidden gem! Delicious veggie roast, and love that you can get a "small" portion (which justified getting the cauliflower cheese as a side!) Definitely recommend.

Great Sunday roasts, not been to a pub with 3 vegan roast options before, plus veggie and vegan pizza choices too, this is what a pub menu should look like. Great food, usual Brighton prices!

This place is so over hyped. The food is good not great, and definitely not worth what they charge for it. I had roast beef which my knife struggled to get through. The veggies were really good, but the Yorkshire pudding was hard and dry. The service is mediocre too.

I am a coeliac, so have a severe allergy to gluten. I am always nervous when I go to eat anywhere for the first time. Had a chat with the person taking our order, who then had a chat with the kitchen. They didn’t disappoint, I had the gf fish and chips, which was great. No problems. Would definitely go again, and recommend to other coeliacs.

Usually enjoy food at Open house but today’s food was so disappointing. The roast (beef and vegetarian) was small, vegetables under cooked, hardly any gravy and potatoes didn’t taste like they had been roasted. Nothing tasted right. Beef was meant to come with horseradish sauce but none given. Staff didn’t check to see if we had condiments and I couldn’t find available staff to get mustard or to ask for more gravy. Roast so dry. Very disappointing for the price and sadly todays roast has put us off eating at the Open house. Location and staff lovely though so sorry for bad review.

Went to the bar because beer tasted off. Waited patiently whilst others were served. Eventually I was the only person at the bar with three members of staff who totally ignored me. Tried to attract their attention but they just talked amongst themselves. Gave up. Plenty of other pubs nearby

Great atmosphere, Superb Staff!

Five of us went for Sunday lunch today .... I had the Beef, my friends between them had Pork, Chicken and a Vegetarian option .. all said how tasty it was .. good portion sizes, friendly staff and a good atmosphere .. and not too noisy .. what more could you ask for?

Wow, this place has gone from strength to strength, I was amazed to see the new extension and extended garden. It's my favourite local to work. The bar staff are always friend too.

My partner and I booked a table for a Sunday roast as we hadn't been here before. Arrived mid-afternoon and the pub was not too busy. Told our table number, which was a bit confusing, as the table with that number on did not have our name on it as we were told. Turns out it was on a different table nearby, so no hassle, just swapped the numbers round. Staff were attentive and we were served quickly. £12 for a couple of pints is fairly standard these days. Menu looked good and we went for the roast beef and roast lamb. Although the meal was fine, it was pretty clear it had all been pre-cooked and just reheated. Problem with that was that the gravy wasn't hot, so the meal itself was not really hot enough. Beef was lovely but lamb was a bit fatty. Overall, it was a decent enough meal as we were both starving but we also ordered some cauliflower cheese, which was OK, but was a tad undercooked. We ordered a bottle of wine, which we were told was sold out but they offered a more expensive one for the same price. The landlady seemed on it, with a young staff who were all fine. Free wifi was good. I agree with one of the other reviews about the lighting. For some reason, while we were finishing our drinks the landlady came round and dimmed all the lights, which made it very dark in there. Atmosphere is one thing, but this didn't help! Good pub for families with kids as there's plenty of space. Would we come here again....probably....would we eat there again....maybe, but it's definitely not a fine dining pub.

This is an old favourite. Good beer and wine and food and a lovely garden.

I booked a table for a 50th birthday celebration, the reserved table was squeezed into the corner of the extended area, with zero atmosphere and limited accessibility. Luckily there were tables free near the bar so we sat there instead. There were 16 of us in the end, we all ate so we spent literally £100’s, unfortunately the food was terrible. Zero taste/ flavours, dry and over cooked, no attention to detail, no salad/ coleslaw etc. with the burgers and other meals. Nobody had a decent meal and the prices of the meals are laughable for what you get. Also, unfortunately some of the bar staff were rude, unhelpful and unfriendly which for a Saturday night in a popular and busy pub seemed strange? This has always been a go to pub having lived in Brighton for 20 years, but I wouldn’t waste money on eating here again.

Went for Sunday roast. Had to pre-order. Didn't have most stuff on the menu and confusion among staff at what they did have. Food was average. Plenty of vegan options and dogs welcome.

This is my local pub for a good reason. Staff are amazing food is outstanding and being gf the menu is perfect and doesn't comprise on taste. Best beer garden in Brighton. A must visit for everyone and convenient as next to London Road train station. 5 star.

Great pub with a nice smoking area and friendly staff

We arrived at London rd new years eve lunchtime raining heavily found salvation in this pub Staff incredibly friendly decided to stay for a drink great range of independent beers and lunch what a great decision. Food was perfect we had a mac and cheese with grilled chicken , salmon and tiger prawn spinage coconut curry dressed with toasted almonds I had a chilli beef black bean and cheese burrito which was huge with homemade guacamole and all cooked fresh absolutely delicious def recommend . The pub itself very stylish wish we had a pub like this near us .

Lovely cosy pub, very busy but still felt intimate. Good food, we stopped for a roast and was not disappointed. Free range pork belly with grate crackling, we added a bacon maple stuffing that was epic. Really nice to see free range pork on a menu and seems the chefs go to good effort to find quality meat from local suppliers

This pub has a very warm welcome, all the staff are very happy and the food is DELICIOUS!

Just OK. Had a Sunday roast (beef), which was passable and reasonable value for money. The organic ale was awful and their choice of beers somewhat limited. Big pub, so definitely recommend as a place to meet up with large groups. Kid friendly in the day too.

Our booking was a mess, even though it had been made two months prior. We had to wait an hour for food, for roasts, because they were fully booked...if you can't cope with a full restaurant then don't allow yourselves to get fully booked?!

The women that seemed to be in charge, wouldn't except that the pint tasted like septic tank, it was flat and not a nice pint, we tried to talk to her about it, which she then replied with that is impossible and that she cleans the pipes once a week and denied us another pint, she then turned very hostile and we didnt continue the conversion because she was getting very arsy, i am very un pleased with the service. Unsure if i will ever return... Hope this review comes in handy when decideng where to go for a drink, there is a very nice pub just up the road called the jolly brewer's.

Had great meal, we sat inside but gardens are lovely, partly booths, some with heaters and string lights around. Dog friendly inside and out.

This is a huge pub. Wander around to find your friends. It’s below the head quarters of the Laine empire of pubs. Food is solid pub fare. The beers are the usual Laines ones, ripper and source. Very much a brighton locals pub, being at the top of the hill.

Horrendous booking system, Google doesn't work so you call them, they give you another link which doesn't confirm the booking without another email. You call them, they don't know as only one on bar... Does not bode well for a good evening. Now trying to book another place as a back up. Hopeless.

Never have I felt the need to write a review about my dining experience than today. I arrived for a staff do with a massive appetite and looking at the specials board and menu I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately that is where the happiness ended. I ordered the squid for starter and duck leg red thai curry for my main. O my goodness the squid was like chewing on a never ending elastic band dripping in oil...terrible. then the worst was yet to come...received the fuse curry with absolutely NO flavour to the rice .NO coconut flavour or sauce...place the duck leg was so over cooked it was like cutting into cardboard. It was an absolute disgrace. The vegetables in the curry were tasteless and over cooked with no salt or pepper... it was about the only thing I tried to finish but alas I couldn't. The worst meal Ive ever eaten in Brighton in 22 years.... do not eat here..ever!!! I've just been mugged for £17... Nooo I'm still hungry..I hope I dont have an upset stomach in the morning!

The manager is absolutely horrible, will not be returning until she’s gone. Ruins everything that a pub experience should be. Very rude to her staff aswell. AVOID

Oh dear. Another tragedy of the pandemic? This used to be a delightful pub with pretty good food. But now it’s understaffed with indifferent food and some of the most uncomfortable seats we’ve ever experienced. The tables outside were very wet (it had stopped raining) so I asked the staff for a cloth to dry one - no ‘Let me do it’ - just “how much paper towel do you need”! They probably couldn’t leave the bar area.

Served me a pizza with raw dough. I’m usually too English to complain, but the server DID ask me how it was so I DID let her know. She said “sorry about that” then retreated into the night (with my £9.95 in hand). Cheers.

Great beer garden for outside eating, and when we visited preciously we were impressed by the food. Went back for a Sunday lunch, lost 2 stars because the food wasn't up to par... The roasties had been badly reheated and were very hard and dry, and the Yorkshires had obviously been sat for a while too and were soft and stale. Disappointing.

Loved this wonderful pub next to our dear friend’s flat. Had a pint of kronenbourg 1664 beer followed by prawn and haddock Sri Lankan curry and brown rice. As a Srilankan, I approve that😁 My partner had lamb chops and salad and pita. It was mouthwatering. Friendly staff, great decor and ambiance. Perfect pub in Brighton!

I really like The Open House, it’s a very modern and youthful pub. It has an amazing big garden and a wide range of food on the menu. The portions were large and not pricey at all compared to other places. The open house is a hidden gem and wish more people knew about it! There’s also a sign that forbids kids under 18 in the pub that me and my friends found very amusing!

Lovely Laine pub, great space inside, lovely heated garden outside. Delicious food. I had the vegan club sandwich which is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

Love the beer garden here, lots of room and booths outdoors, menu is really good for staple British pub menu with some nice twists on specials.

Really passive aggressive service from a woman I assume is the manager (maybe Spanish?). She had our table in stiches with her attitude ..will remember our visit if only for her response when we asked for more gravy. Just because you use a pleasant tone of voice and add e.g. love or darling at the end of a sentence doesn't mean what you're saying is not really unhelpful and unfriendly...

Nice atmosphere and great gluten free food. Although staff have changed, good quality and service has remained for the six years that I have visited this pub.

We went mid-week lunchtime and building works were going on, so not the best experience. Having said that, we thoroughly enjoyed the food and saw that the place has huge potential. Lots of outside, secluded, seating and dining areas and really nice interior. Plus the staff were very friendly. Will definitely be going back. I'm sure it will get 5 stars next visit.

Just tourists for a couple of days. Told Open House a good pub. Saturday night so quite busy where we were in the pub. Vibrant without being too noisy. Could just about hear one another. Very dark. Had to use mobile torch to read menu....

Totally shambles. Unhelpful and unreasonable bar staff. I ordered Bedlam Best bitter and was served a pale ale. The bar staff then said they'd check the barrel so I had a half because they said they could change it. When they returned from the check they said they wouldn't be changing it so I ordered another half. In combining the halves to a pint glass some beer was spilt and they refused to top it up as I'd "taken a sip". The beer value of this minor gesture of good will, (given they weren't serving what was advertised), is truly astounding. Also given £6 for chips as a local resident I'll always go to the Jolly Brewer as a preference and I recommend everyone else to do the same.

The main issue we had with our experience is the way management dealt with our issues. One of our meals didn't turn up and when this was presented we were met with loud defensiveness from the on site manager. When we arrived it was clear...
