Saltdean Tavern in Brighton and Hove

I asked about dairy allergy was told not to have the mash and not the cauliflower cheese and the gravy. After having some of the vegetables, I was told by a friend that they put butter on the vegetables to make them look nice. I have since been back and forth to the toilet. Thanks for the wrong information. Won't be going here again.

Lovely little spot for a cheap and cheerful breakfast! We were greeted by Shani, who was a lovely host. The hash browns were spot on and we all helped ourselves to seconds. 👌🏼

I came here for a family lunch. Wasn’t busy and food took 25 mins for starters and an extra 20 mins for main food. I had the Philly Burger and was expecting an actual beef burger patty but received a terrible processed rubbery burger which wasn’t pleasant at all. Didn’t finish it despite being hungry. A couple of my family had roasts which in the past have been okay but it was incredibly salty and not pleasant. Our mains were not cleared by waiter when he bought out our desserts which was the brownie which was very dry. Overall very dissatisfied with the meal. Would not reccomend. Was also served a bottom of the barrel Guinness which had to ask to be changed. Poor.

The tempura prawn started was cooked to perfection but I didn’t like the sweet and sour dip, I thought it was sweet chilli so disappointing, for my main I thought I would play it safe with a ‘simple cheeseburger, turned out to be two of the greasy-it’s burgers. Felt like the were dipped in grease and put in the oven for two minutes, had to take one of em out as it was way to much grease for me. Felt quite sick afterwards would not recommend. Looked like the carvery was the only thing worth eating

Dogs not allowed inside but you can sit outside with them, which is ok until the smokers congregate around the front door. The food was ok for the price. It’s an ok place, but it’s seen better days. The car park is now only free for 2 hours, then gets expensive.

Relaxed, comfortable with a typical local pub vibe. Carvery is good value for price

We come here often and the food is always good , but because it's such an under used restaurant some times the meat is a little dry but otherwise the place is clean and the staff are lovely and welcoming we have never had the pizza but they always look amazing and fresh

This place is absolutely amazing and the food is great. Start off with the breakfast I had was fantastic with a good choice of items, bacon eggs and fried bread and so much more to choose from. All you can eat was excellent value for money. Staying on to lunch the carvery was out of this world and the meat was so succulent and soft, with the unlimited sides of veg with the transitional roast potatoes and stuffing and gravy made it exceptionally good. The drinks were decently priced and a sure way to make us stay right in to dinner time. Doing an all day stay diving right into desert was so nice, service was exceptional and the staff and the cooks were very kind in helping my needs of service. This is one of the best storehouses I’ve been to and all ready been here multiple times I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good place to eat. Way to go and thank you to all the staff at Stonehouse saltdean for a great day out

Very good food, good value. Bit understaffed

A lacklustre experience on more than one occasion. There is no notification when you walk in that service is via the bar which only has one person serviing or via the QR code. Tonight no apple sauce or brown sauce! Starters cleared away but menus left on the table! I have been for breakfast on seven occasions and they have only had black pudding which is advertised on the menu on one occasion with an array of excuses as to why it is not available. Very often breakfast replenishment is slow, you have to wait for a chicken to lay an egg for it to be cooked and added to the breakfast bar. Service is non existent, it is self service in every sense of the word. The carvey was ok though. This place is crying out for table sevice for the complete service offer excluding the carvery of course, in my opinion.

Absolutely fantastic traditional pub / carvery. Great family atmosphere and service. Food is amazing and great value. Carvery, pub classics and even a pizza bar . Lots of parking and transport links. Superb location next to the stunning historic Saltdean Lido and literally fifty steps to the beach and sea. The local area is an Art Deco heaven. I highly recommend, regards Michael

A victim of its own success, the atmosphere always depends on the patrons. Sadly a few customers lack of manners and basic understanding of how to use serving utensils spoilt my visit. The team provide what's needed for each choice of vegetable so why take dirty serving utensils from other dishes to cross contaminate the food on offer?

Trinity, Megan and grace were all so catering for us as a group of 9. Only compliant we had was the beef burger was extremely dry.

Average carvery and average breakfast

The staff are wonderful and there was one particularly I remembered named Maeva. She was so helpful and enthusiastic and she was able to uplift the atmosphere. I would definitely come here again as everything to me was 10/10 but I just wanted to say a massive shout out to Maeva as she really made my day and delivered an outstanding service.

Second time here in 2 weeks, absolutely fantastic!! Excellent service and attention from Grace, very helpful, nothing too much trouble. Food served to us by Oren, again with fantastic service, quality of food was excellent, prices were fantastic, so good in fact our Son paid !!!!. Well done team, see you again soon.

Visited on a Monday in December. We had prebooked. Used Bluelight card to get a 20% discount on the food. We all had the standard carvery which was delicious. Excellent vfm. A go to restaurant for family meals. Friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Go every sunday for the most delicious & value 4 money carvery. Always greeted by staff with a genuine smile as they take yr order. Excellent service. Food is always hot & cooked perfect & chefs are really friendly & carve your choice of meats then you help yrself to delicious veg choice...consistant perfection every week & gravy is delish too. Highly recommend. Toilets also spotless.

Thank you Saltdean Tavern for the lovely festive meal for 28 of us today. We had a great time. The food was excellent. The staff were so helpful you all work very hard.

Ok so l have never posted anything like this before..... This morning my partner and I experienced complete and total homophobia and racism from The Saltdean Tavern. Instantly when we walked in, we were given the look of disgust. Blatantly ignored by some woman with brown hair and blonde highlights by the name of Shai or Shaina. Yet when an older WHITE English man came in, she became completely attentive and assisted him instantly with a smile We asked if everything was okay, but she ignored us completely. Avoiding eye contact with us. We asked for the manager, who was totally not prepared to handle the situation. We asked for the name of the employee, but she denied giving it to us. This was entirely a racist and/or homophobic situation and I will not allow this to be swept under the rug.

Ordering from the bar all good. Had carvery not all meats were available, some veggies were low. All hot and well presented, some sauces not replenished. Overall enjoyed my meal.

Stopped here for a lovely carvery on fireworks night before going to watch them. The warm welcome we received was excellent from trinity who got us seated and told us how it all works. We then ordered food and drinks from our server Grace who looked after us very very well whilst we ate and made sure she helped us with drinks and extra food we ordered on top of the carvery and made sure we enjoyed our meal and everything was ok in a super friendly nice way. I rarely eat at Stonehouse as the last two local ones I ate I’d never ever rush back too but the food here was much better cooked than the other ones and we’d defiantly return. All in all 10/10 from Grace, trinity and a great carvery chef.

AVOID… shockingly bad. Rude, mentally vacant staff. Bereft of any customer skills once they have taken your money. Noticed how dirty and tired it is. Borderline squaler.

AVOID.. Absolutely shocking. Waited for 15 minutes for somebody to serve us after paying. Queue of people.staff milling about doing what seemed to be very little.woman who took order went in out kitchen smirking. Very rude manner. Eventually gave up hope and got money back at bar. Deserves minus stars. Also noticed how extremely FILTHY it was. AVOID

Went for a big family get together here there was a great range of food and drinks available the staff were amazing friendly and very helpful kids were happy with the toys from the ball machines and adults satisfied with everything else highly recommended

Lovely carvery and evening with family

I used to love the saltdean tavern it's really gone downhill since I was a kid I came with my partner about 2 months ago for a breakfast thr toast was cold and burnt, sausages were burnt just wasn't a great meal! We thought we would give it another try but this time we came for a roast dinner and safe to say I will be finding somewhere els to eat from now on staff when we arrived here moody and unhappy chef was unhappy and didn't Evan smile, was only carrots and peas for the vegetables that isn't a roast! The potatoes were vile and tasted frozen and rubbery so we didn't eat them thr only thing that tasted gorgeous was the gammon meat it was beautiful I usually don't leave bad reviews but was really disappointed with this service

Enjoyed our family carvery, Jasmin was our server doing a great job, very attentive, she was working on her own mostly, so we had to clear our table before sitting, but for the price overall a nice experience. We had to ask for all the sauces to be refilled, they definitely seemed short staffed. Thanks to Jasmin she made it a nice evening. Roasties could be crispier !

Not a nice experience. We had booked this carvery as the one at Withdean was closed. Arrived at 6pm welcomed and taken to our table. Ordered our food and drinks. The pizza arrived after ten minutes and was enjoyed by our son however the carving was a massive disappointment. The meat was fine but the vegetables were terrible especially the potatoes which were warm and chewy. Peas were dry and can’t comment on the cauliflower as the dish was empty. With only a few in the restaurant and at 6pm I would have thought that they would have plenty of vegetables. This was not like our previous visits. The person in front of me scooped out the remaining beef gravy so it was just an empty pan left. The staff ware friendly but the food was a let down.

The staff were SO lovely and friendly, nothing was too much for them and the food was pretty yummy. Beautiful potatoes and beautiful meat. Have been to a few different carveries and only came to this one because the one we usually go to was closed but this might become our favourite

Very low moral about the staff and roast potatoes where dead even fresh ones cooked to death !! The vibe was not great and Guinness tasted awful !! I’ll try again in 10 years !! Note to big managers pay your staff more and improve moral happy staff = happy customers!!

Three of us went at 6pm. The staff were nice and welcoming. One pizza ordered and two traditional carvery’s. The pizza was nice and the Turkey and Gammon were fine however the vegetables were horrible. Potatoes looked nice however they were very chewy and either reheated of cooked and left standing. Peas and carrots were dry and warm. The meat gravy I had to scoop the last portion out of the pot which left it empty for the next person. Although the Yorkshire pudding looked good it was soft like a pancake. We visited this one as the carvery at Withdean is closed at the moment. We will not return and sooner wait for Withdean to reopen or go to The Stonehouse at Shoreham which is very good.

The carvery may be simple, but it comes at a simple price. As someone who usually prefers fine dining, I always make sure to take my grandparents here, as they absolutely love it. Usually the food is hot and fresh, and I always leave after eating a few kilos of veg. Grace and Matt were lovely and attentive, the beef was particularly tender. Of course it’s no five star restaurant, but you’re not paying a five star price!
