My wife and I went here for a Sunday dinner. I had the roast beef and my wife had the pork loin, both were fantastic, plenty on the plate and the meat was so juicy and tender. The service was fantastic as well, seen to and sat down, meals brought in good time and also very polite. Although its a bit of a trip for us we will be going again.

We came to celebrate a 45th birthday we sat upstairs. Start with the positives. The service was fabulous, beautiful atmosphere. Lovely staff. The negative. The food was awful. The cheese and onion pie was bland, tasteless and unpleasant. We ordered. Ribeye steak and was given Ribeye pork which looked more like a cut of pork. The steak and ale pie was wishy washy, the meat was gristle. Very disappointing as normally this pub/ restaurant is lovely.

Walked in on another customer complaing to what looked like the manager, a s9gn of things to come!! Service was slow, the waiting staff were not attentive in any way, had to go to the bar ourselves. Ordered the £54.99 carvery for two. Waitress said they had run out of cauliflower cheese, okay that's fine . Asked if we could get something in its place, pigs in blankets, chefs sent the waitress back and said no they were too expensive as a substitute, despite all being priced the same on the menu, we were told they would give is extra vegetables. Arrived at 16.00. Main course came out around 17.20/25. No extra vegetables, no stuffing, no mash potatoes, and no crackling. Asked the waitor, he said they'd run out and apologised we hadn't been told , he looked embarrassed at having to talk to us. No mention of the missing items , no apologise, i had to ask. I mean thats just poor. Dont advertise it , if you cant deliver it. This was the same thing that happened at the table next to us, not given what was advertised and not informed of missing items at time of ordering. Us and the other table would have changed our orders. The beef was described as being 'pink', no it was well done, took it home for my cat, she didn't eat it either! The only saving grace for me were the new potatoes, roast potatoes tasted rubbery like they'd been sat for hours, busband ate them as by the time the food came out he was starving. I was warned the place had gone down hill, should have took more notice. Anything else you need to know about my experience just let me know.

We heard about the new menu and our friends have always said such lovely comments about the food so we decided to go for lunch! We were not disappointed! The service felt 5 star, they couldn’t do enough to make sure everything was to a high standard. The food was outstanding, well done chef! We even had a drink in the beer garden after and soaked up the views. We can’t wait to go back for my grandchildren’s birthday!

We decided to try The Olde White Beare after our original destination (the only other pub in the village) was closed during its advertised opening times. Thankfully, we found the nearby Olde White Beare on Tripadvisor. But, being a last-minute find, we didn't have a chance to read any reviews, and didn't know what to expect. We were so pleasantly surprised. It's charming! The food was excellent, and the portions were generous. The staff was very accommodating with special requests, especially since we arrived only 30 minutes before closing time. Our only disapointment was that their delicious-looking breakfast menu had been recently discontinued (not sure if it was temporary or permanent), as we had been wondering where to find a good breakfast in town. I'm sorry we didn't get to experience it. Other than that, we had a lovely evening meal. The service was a tiny bit slow, but that is perfectly understandable since we had arrived so late in the evening. I would return in a heartbeat and would recommend it.

My wife and I spent a very pleasant hour or so enjoying a tea time drink in the beer garden and decided to have an evening meal. My steak and ale pie was fine but my wife was extremely disappointed with her choice of salmon fillet. The lady who served us came to ask if everything was ok and my wife raised her issues. The fillet was small, cold and bland and the side dressing was way too spicey. It was £20. The waitress said she would 'tell the chef.' So, that's alright then! Sorted!!

First two photos for old review below, next three photos for the new review at the bottom: Old Review (2022): There was a time where the Old White Beare excelled in quality. When I ate there last week, I was very disappointed and made it quite clear to the staff. Firstly, when we were seated we were informed that practically half of the menu, and some drinks, were not available. We ordered fish and chips and steak. When the food arrived we were asked if we would like anything else to go with our food, and I asked for cutlery. There was no cutlery on the table. Then I had to go around and search for someone to give me a steak knife as I was not provided with one. As for the food itself, as you can see from the images, the fish was tiny. A tiny thin sliver of fish. Possibly the smallest I've ever seen. My steak was alright, however I'd ordered a chilli butter for it which never arrived, when enquiring about it it turns out there wasn't any...so they gave me a cold garlic butter instead - but by the time it had arrived, and I'd got a knife to cut it, my steak was cold so it didn't melt. Very disappointed by my experience there. I paid full price and didn't complain after as I didn't have energy to do so. I felt very let down by a usual fabulous place, which is why it has three stars. If I hadn't any prior knowledge it would have been a 2 star rating. New Review (2024): I've changed my review to a four star but really if I could I'd make it 3.75 stars. The food has certainly improved with the new owners, however there are still staffing issues and stock issues. I came here at lunch time when it was quiet, there were two of us. The server had to return multiple times as they had forgotten our orders, or to tell us the thing we wanted was out of stock. Others seated around is were told similar, to the point there were no peas or beans left and over four dishes there were out of stock. Better but not perfect, I'll be coming back one more time in the future.

The pub interior still has its historic features and charm. The lunch menu was traditional pub food. I had the fish and chips which weren’t great but friends had the burger which they said was good. Chips for the pie and fish were a bit under cooked. Bar staff / waitress not very friendly and one was wearing leather hot pants which seemed not quite the appropriate choice for serving food at lunch! It was okay but could be so much better!

Under the heading of Elaine my wife Upon waiting for my meal order we had to experience a complaint from another dissatisfied customer. I can honestly say when previously ordering a steak at your premises it's never been bleeding onto my plate that's why I returned it to be cooked correctly , when it was returned to me it exactly the same untouched with the same sauce unmoved,. I feel I gave you chance to rectify the fault to which you failed and as witnessed by your waitress had to swap meal with my son who was having a burger who doesn't mind eating bloody steak which explains why all the plates were empty upon your collection. Maybe you need to communicate a bit more with your staff and reassess your customer service skills

Whilst the food was decent enough the actual portions for both starters and main meals were small. So much so that we were still hungry after the meal. The pate starter was unbelievable small !! One piece of brioche style bread to go with the pate!! But the biggest gripe was the cost. The food is ridiculously overpriced. There are much better places elsewhere. Avoid this place for food.

I'm a chef......to a good pub standard. I Was warned not to go for food here by a local but thought give it a chance as I've enjoyed a drink in the garden chatting to friendly locals. Fish and Chips £18 Burnt but under cooked chips. Muchy peas watery, tarter source tasteless. Fish very small, batter soggy and greasy, it resembled a trainer insole for size and thinness, size 5. My girlfriend said it was motorway service station standard at best. It's just not far on people who might not go out much and look forward to a treat eating out.... please just go to gee gees and eat your fish and chips in the car.

Arrived on time and stood around for a few minutes waiting to be acknowledged. After two different members of staff told us someone would be with us, we were shown to our table. It took 30 minutes for our starter to arrive (after chasing for it). We spoke to a staff member pointing out that if there were delays then it's courtesy to let us know. The food arrived and was "ok". We were also aware of another couple who had to wait for their food. After we had mentioned that they should have told us of the delay, we heard them tell other customers that there is a delay in the kitchen. I could understand if the place was heaving with customers, but it wasn't. Unlikely to be returning.

We arrived here on a very busy Sunday at around 4.30 pm and managed to get a parking space in the car park with a few spaces left. On entering the pub we only just got through the door to be met by a fair size queue of people either waiting for drinks or to be told which table they were to be sat at. As it was a very sunny day and the place has quite a large and very pleasant outside space for customers, we didn't mind too much about queuing to get a table as the warm sunny Sunday made it very busy. We got our table number and ordered our food and sat down enjoying a drink and waited for our meals and sadly it was a table booked for 4.30 and our meal came at 6.15 which was quite a wait. Our meals were good to some extent but the roast potatoes were hard and not warm enough, however the meat, veg and Yorkshire puddings were excellent. The star ratings would have been higher if the roast potatoes had been softer and warmer. Overhaul this place is well worth a visit but a few things as mentioned need improving, the staff worked hard and our waitress was very pleasant and polite.

Then, one of the dishes we ordered should have roasted veggies with it and three pieces of veg is not a portion, considering I saw someone else get a sizeable dish of the same veggies with the same main course. Read the reviews before booking. A lesson learnt not believing them. Booked a table for Easter Sunday, needed to change the time, noticed lots of times still available, worrying. Oh well, give it a go. Lovely pub,no denying in a quaint little village. Staff on arrival friendly. The restaurant part was not full. Waited 15 minutes after being seated to have our order taken. Me and my Husband both ordered the Sunday Roast, beef for me, pork for my husband....Food was out within a couple of minutes...Parsnips were hard and the food was edible. Now I'm sure that was all prepped out like a carvery is, as there is no way, you can be served a meal that quick. Not even the Fast Food Chains can give an order that quick. The sticky toffee pudding was nice. Staff looked fed up. Overall, very disappointed. Won't return.

Although we live local, it’s been at least ten years since our last visit. Although the pub has had a much needed refurb, the old charm is still there. Nothing was too much trouble for Natalie and her team to meet my partners onion allergy issue and the service was great. Unfortunately we remember an independent pub serving freshly cooked meals however this pub is now part of the Stonegate empire a fact I missed whilst looking at the website and it’s quite obvious from the meals turned out that this is a chain pub serving poor quality factory produced meals. For £15.50 the trio roast consisted of poor quality meat served with under done roast potatoes almost raw veg a teaspoon full of mash and a frozen Yorkshire pudding. The menu states unlimited roasties Yorkshire Puds and gravy but this wasn’t offered. It was a last minute decision to go out, and with our usual restaurants being full, we decided on a change, but from the meals served it’s easy to see why we secured a table. The starter was reasonable but the pudding of rhubarb and custard sundae was delicious. Unfortunately it will be a long time before we go again and feel we would have had a better lunch at a better price taking pot luck and waiting for a table at Toby.

The worst pub I have been in for a long time. My friend and I visited on Wednesday 28th February. My friend had rung and booked a table the week before. We arrived to be told we don't do table service mid week. My friend stated that the last time she visited to a booked table les than a year ago. The female member of bar staff quite arrogantly stated that its been 18 months since we did table service. Why was that not told to my friend when she rang to book? The pub was very cold no heating and we were both cold and we were wearing sweaters. There was a fire on in a back room near the toilets were there was nobody using. The food was mediocre my Scampi was lukewarm. My friends order was without sweet potatoes and just extra chips. Why wasn't this mentioned before serving.I ordered pint of Timothy Taylor landlord which was the first pint pulled had not been drawn off beforehand. It was flat and tasteless. Would never dream of visiting this pub again. Also the Scampi was cooked in oil that was terrible the aftertaste stayed with me for the rest, of the afternoon. And our our wait time from ordering at the bar was 45 minutes

I have since been in 2 time xmas and new year 2023/24 times since as family dragged me. I was accused as of this reason for am i allowed in tonight oh we need to speak to manager. I did nothing wrong an have been in since yet not allowed in tonight. Stonegate and bars in general need better management and rules against customers being slander by their staff. People need protection from biased companies and dishonesty in a blame to claim world where the companies staff accuse falsely with no proof. My family have lived in this village over 50 year i know all the locals, as i grew up here, 1 company takes over and i am named as above. This is wrong whether its the company or a staff members fault i have my origional complaint saved, a complaint where i was offered no more than a courtesy. Why was i ok to go in over xmas and now stopped due to 1 person. Its slander and bias, its not right in any way as i did nothing wrong By the way 2 staff and no customers when i was not allowed in. I dont do biased pubs or those which staff bad mouth customers and are allowed to. I WILL RETRY ONCE THE NEW TENANT IS IN!!! All i can say is about time and hallelujah!

The Sunday dinner was poor, with mash that had clearly been cooked a long time ago, undercooked parsnips, undercooked roast potatoes and a lamb shank lacking in meat. The promise of extra gravy, Yorkshires and roast potatoes never materialised as nobody came to check on our table until they cleared our plates. An extra Yorkshire might have alleviated some of our disappointment with the overall quality of food. We would have liked more drinks but nobody asked if we wanted anything more when the food came and no member of staff came back until we were finished. Basic service in a pub or restaurant is to check on a table and ask if they need anything and are happy with their food. Some decent pub food and good customer service is what we expect from a country pub and our experience was very much lacking. We don't blame the young staff as the waitress who first seated us was friendly and brought our drinks quickly but once we had ordered that is where the good service ended.

The first time I’ve visited the pub and unfortunately will not be returning again for food. I attended this afternoon with family (6 adults and 3 children in total). We sat at our table to missing cutlery which we had to ask for, not a great start. All adults ordered starters which came out fairly prompt and the kids meals came out with the starters. The kids meals were great, the portion sizes were huge and for only £5.50 it also included a pudding! But it went downhill from there. We’d been sitting at the table almost 2 hours until we received our mains and the excuses we received were ‘you’re a big table’ - debatable, I wouldn’t consider 6 adults a big table when the children had already eaten and that ‘they were busy’, which isn’t really our problem. The food eventually came and we were missing cutlery they failed to replace when the starters were taken away so again we had to ask for more. Three of us had the Sunday lunch while the others ordered from the normal menu and everyone had at least one complaint about their meal apart from one. The roasts were missing some veg (they didn’t let us know about this until I pointed out it was missing - apparently they had run out) they were missing the stuffing and crackling, they also didn’t have an adequate amount of meat. I received one thin slice on mine not sure if this is their usual portions but going off their numerous comments about food stock I presumed they tried rationing the meat on each plate and hoped we wouldn’t say anything... The pie arrived with the wrong sides and the gammon arrived burnt, hard and inedible. We all thought the meals had been plated up and then microwaved again. We complained and luckily got two meals knocked off the bill but if we weren’t so fed up after being there almost 2.5 hours we’d have pushed for all the adult meals to be knocked off as it was appalling. It has the potential to be a lovely food spot but it needs some definite improvement.

Booked in for a Birthday meal . When we arrived the table wasn’t ready and they were cleaning the table and setting the it around us. The food when it finally arrived came all at different times . The fish and chips were burnt and I have no idea how they could serve it . There were six of us and we had all finished by the time the sixth meal came. We ordered a beef burger from the child’s menu only to find it was a chicken burger when it arrived . The full size burger was the same size as the child burger ! The service was really poor and no apologies were given for any of the issues that we had. Eventually when we brought it to the staffs attention they then apologised and offered to knock something off the bill. They didn’t knock anything off for poor service . I don’t mind paying for good food but the entire experience was appalling . Really disappointed in what we thought would be a good experience . They had been busy with Sunday dinners that day but it should not impact anyone who doesn’t want a Sunday dinner. I can honestly say I have never experienced anything so poor ! Needless to say no tip was given …. Other than do better next time … not that there will be one for us! Terrible !

Very disappointed, food used to be so good here, lamb shank overdone, dry and hard, Sunday lunch no meat left what was left was a shocking measly portion no crackling. Another couple sat near us sent their food back and left! Won't be returning anytime soon.

Terrible experience. Food was inedible and burnt. Service very slow . All meals were served separately with the last persons being served after everyone had eaten and after having reminded them twice. Absolutely shocking with no apologies until we complained . They did knock off two meals as an apology. This did not help with the fact that the food and service were terrible. I don’t mind paying good money for good food and service . There was neither ! Absolutely shocking ! It was like they couldn’t be bothered , not even enough to get the order correct or on time ! We ordered a beef burger from the child’s menu to only receive a chicken burger . It’s honestly the worst meal we have ever had along with the worst service ! Disappointed

Very disappointing as I heard good things about this place. Where do I begin… absolutely appalling service and incompetent staff! Completely forgot one of our drinks that we ordered. Waited about 30 minutes for someone to take our food order and after an hour of waiting for food we left. Will never be heading back there and not should anyone else!

By far and away, the worst meal I have ever had. Meat (lamb shank) was ok but cold, the veg was rock solid, and also cold, but strangely dried out (leftovers?). Struggled to cut and chew the parsnip, and carrot, roast potatoes were raw, my son's pig in blanket was pink!! Won't be going back.

Saturday 20 January, I must say that we found the service was excellent, friendly and helpful. The Venison Pie was good but the roast carrot and parsnip veg could have been better (Chef take note) Beer good tried a few lol. The atmosphere was buzzing with real and friendly folk and their dogs including ours. Real pub real people ,

Appalling! Went for an 80th birthday meal. If you book, check if they have a function as that will take priority over you. After our main meal, we had to ask for our empty plates to be removed & for a dessert menu. We went to order dessert and he then checked and told us the chef had left. If we’d been served in a timely fashion we might have got a dessert. We won’t be going back.

Just had lunch here with my wife and family. The area we were seated in was so cold and not heated, we sat there freezing and uncomfortable. When the food was brought to the table it immediately cooled down, I had ordered fish, chips and mushy peas or should I say mushy cold pea as the portion was less than a small spoon in size. I think you can do better this.

Went for afternoon tea, not many people in the restaurant but still got forgotten about when ordering drinks or extra food! staff didn’t have a clue what afternoon tea/tipsy afternoon tea included. Had to argue about the bill at the end and made to feel like we were trying to get freebies when explaining the drinks were included in the afternoon tea and we had already paid a deposit, no apologies, just snarls from the 3 members of staff behind the bar! Would not recommend. Never had an experience quite like it!

Eesh. If you want to go somewhere and be forgotten about, not served your order, average drinks, incorrect bill, arguments about incorrect bill, no apology for anything, and some miserable faces.. here’s your spot. Unfortunately it’s not what we went for.

What a lovely surprise this was - we went with our son his wife and teenage grandson - We walked into the small bar with beautiful real fires burning in the first two rooms making a very cosy welcome. Unfortunately no fire in the dinning room where we ate but it still felt warm. The staff were helpful and we all enjoyed our food and felt it was good value. A nice place to go for a drink on a cold winter’s night. Wish we had a pub like that in our area it would make a great "local"!

Family lunch out for a birthday and we were all disappointed. The Old White Beare was chosen as it has always done amazing food; unfortunately today's fell far below what we have come to expect. The starter - was supposed to be a mushroom topped bruschetta, what came was cold and served on a slice of what looked and tasted like a slice of toasted Warburton's. The main - fish was very over cooked, with batter black in places, chips were undercooked and hard and a came with a spoonful of cold mushy peas presented in a tiny pot. Still a great pub but food at the Beare has changed, very sad to say, for the worse.

Booked in for a meal today as part of our Christmas tradition. We were welcomed and served by Natalie who made us feel very welcome. The pub was quiet but felt very homely with the decor and Christmas decorations. Between us we had turkey and beef bourguignon for main, both came mash and seasonal vegetables. For dessert it was Christmas pudding and custard, and berry tart; both delicious. A good selection of beers including 4 hand pulled ales. The piano is a lovely touch in the corner of the dining room. I'm sure we'll be back soon, Adam (Craft.Beer.Monkey)

One of the best traditional village pubs around in a beautiful countryside setting. Big open fires make it the perfect place after a long winter walk. Food is excellent, especially the Sunday Roast dinner but, highly recommend their Mushroom Wellington for the veggies as well. Wonderful friendly atmosphere and dogs are welcome too.

Lovely place, but service was terrible, to the point where the menu says rib eye steak served with chips and onion rings and apparently its an option, dinks order wrong, pudding order wrong, the kids menue for burger they say its doesn't come with cheese, ok why not say that when raking our order, pretty annoying really as its a nice place. Any way hope when the staff read this they can reflect on their knowledge of the menu and possibly just do their job 😉

The pub has a warm cosy atmosphere and was a great place to have lunch with our friends The menu was lovely with plenty of choice. Tho food was very good and plentiful and we were so full we sadly could not find room for a pudding - we must try them next time There was an open log fire in the snug where we loved drinking our coffees . All 6 of us enjoyed ourselves and we will be back for our next reunion next month -thank you

Disappointing. I visited with 6 other family members. No table service. The pies were ok - the veg not. It let the whole meal down. It was raw, completely. Couldn't cut nor bite it. A real shame. Once the plates arrived at the table, we didn't see a waitress until they came to collect the plates. No-one asked whether everything was ok. Nobody appeared bothered. We won't be going again.

Arrived at 12:45. Told no soup left so the soup is obviously not made daily. I’m sure nobody is eating soup for breakfast so working on the assumption that lunch starts around 12, they’re either not making enough or they’re using leftovers. Ridiculously slow service. Waited 45 minutes for 2 overpriced sandwiches. Slice of cake £3.75, wafer thin. Staff surly and unwelcoming. Not a good place to eat at all.

Visited today for tea and cake. Very disappointed, paid£16+ for two teas and two pieces of supposedly sticky ginger cake. Cake was awful very dry and hard. Shame as the garden centre itself was very nice.

Stayed at the nearby hotel for work so went to The Old Mill out of convenience and was pleasantly surprised. Food was lovely, had the beef burger, the Malbec was very nice and the staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely recommend and is a bonus to have such a lovely pub so close to a premier inn
