10 out of 10!! Beautiful Sunday lunch! Reasonable prices and the portions are massive! Best Sunday roast I have had in a long time. Well worth a visit. I had lamb shank Sunday lunch, my daughter had lasagna and my dad had a burger! Staff were friendly and helpful. Pub was clean and warm. All in all it was a good experience and I would definitely be returning

My wife and I are locals, and live in Cross Hills, and so have eaten at the Old White Bear four times already this year either on our own or with our family when they visit. We booked a table for Saturday evening 15th June 2024 (20.00hrs) to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Unfortunately it was not the evening we expected! Good welcome from behind the bar young lady and asked when we would like to sit and got us menus and initial drinks - all good so far!. She was then overtaken by male member of staff in short and a tee-shirt (in a restaurant) who really could not car less. We were the only customer in the restaurant area for the whole time there. We ordered from the Tee-shirt and shorts member of staff who throughout our visit continually hurried. My wife's starter Tomato and Mozzarella tart, was very enjoyable but my Prawn Cocktail very small on the prawn but masses of bread? My wife main course of Salmon and Haddock Tart was different and enjoyable. I ordered the Gammon Steak and asked if I could swop the pineapple (which I unable top eat as it affects my medication) with a few mushrooms. My meal arrived on the plate: a gammon steak, a fried egg, and 12 chips - no herb tomatoes', no peas as last time. When I queried this with our shorts and tee-shirt server In was informed temporary chef normal one doing stag-do! No apologies. So we sat their and sat their only for our shorts and tee-shirt server to ask if we wanted the bill - standing there with the card machine. We asked about sweets - can't do them if after 09.00 o'clock. We paid up and left!!! Disappointed, getting to the stage of Fawlty Towers', wedding anniversary which you asked about and knew about. Maybe our latest visit sadly reflects some of the recent comments in the village about The Old White Bear - not the way to encourage us to return again as customers, especially in such a difficult hospitality market-place? The old white bear is a bit of a chameleon. Great food but also a lovely pub atmosphere. There are two clear areas (bar and more food ish area) and both work well. Generally great atmosphere here and staff behind the bar friendly and easy to get on with. One of my favourite pubs. Quiz on a Thursday is great and generally the questions are good (although my only complaint is that I am not clever enough). Good for a pint of an evening, great for food on a Sunday afternoon

Family Sunday lunch was average. There was 9 of us and service was ok. Most had the Sunday roast beef or pork, was just ok. Two had fish and chips, one GF, which was ok, batter was really pale, but it tasted fine, chips were more like wedges. The regular fish and chips was fine. Sticky toffee pudding was really good, lemon tart was nice, biscoff cheesecake was ok and the GF hot chocolate fudge cake was very nice. We were on a canal boat holiday, enjoyed the walk to the pub, has a little history and was a nice little pub, but food wasn’t good enough for us to revisit.

What a disaster how can you ruin fish & chips?? Well they can here! Like an idiot I insisted on paying too. We saw portions being served Sunday afternoon that looked golden, hot, & crispy so decided to visit during week (Thursday). Chips were cold in the middle, grey looking, the fish batter soft & squidgy around the fish(undercooked) & not crispy at all. I looked forward so much to this as a treat, having been in hospital for 2 weeks. Either the oil wasn't hot enough for the fish or it was not left in long & chips warmed up from lunchtime.

The Old White Bear is a very old traditional pub with multiple nicely furnished rooms and a medium sized beer garden. There were a couple of good cask beers on offer including Timothy Taylor Landlord (a favourite of mine). We were there for dinner and thought that the menu was a bit limited in choice even though there was a specials board. We had the steak and ale pie (very good) and the chicken & mushroom pie (nice and moist but not much mushroom). The chips weren't the best - not very crispy. All of the staff were very friendly and there were a lot of locals in for a drink which was good to see.

We found the pub whilst exploring the local area and enjoyed a Sunday lunch, the pub was very welcoming and even had a couple of fires going (a few cold days) so a warm welcome. The bar staff were polite and engaging allowing us to select somewhere to sit not just where we’d been allocated. We both chose to have a Road Beef dinner as it was Sunday but other options were available, the plate was full but no overcrowded and the food was lovely. The Yorkshire Pudding did not disappoint and with hindsight I would have requested some more gravy which I heard another table ask for and receive when I was nearing the end of my meal. The deserts looked lovely but we were both feeling a little stuffed so may use this as an excuse to revisit and sample. The pub has a genuine feel of a local pub that does good grub/food and I’m sure future visitors shouldn’t be disappointed, cheers.

Excellent ambience, food and service. At last, a restaurant with more than 2 vegan options. So often restaurants offer one vegan meal, if any, and on a “different” menu that you have to ask for, and if you’re not brave enough, you settle for a of chips and some peas. Not so at The Old White Bear. All the food offerings in one place so everyone feels catered for. Good options in both the starter and the mains section. To top it all, they were delicious. Well done. Forward thinking and acknowledging all us weirdoes out there. We’ll definitely be back.

Fancying a pint mid-afternoon with a pal, we decided to visit the ‘Laffer’, a pub known previously for having miserable staff. Things don’t change! We hadn’t booked a table, but plenty were available inside or out. We decided to go outside and I asked for two pints. I was told I could only order through their app, not in person with the clown standing in front of me, and that I could only pay for it through the app! The reason for this was that “this is the law”!! What nonsense! The Laffer is obviously trying to regain its reputation as being the most unwelcoming pub in Yorkshire. Congrats. One star.

What more do you need from a local? Moved into the village just over 2 years ago now and have never been disappointed. The most friendly and hospitable bar staff with always on point beer and lager. A great selection of spirits with premium mixers. We must’ve eaten here at the very least once a month and it’s always delicious with a good varied menu. However my favourite is the Sunday roast. I had fish and chips which were delicious and the batter lovely and crunchy. My friend had the chicken in a cream sauce, equally nice. We both had a pudding, mine was lemon meringue pie and ice cream and my friend a blueberry cheesecake with ice cream. All the food was excellent and very nicely presented. Very friendly attentive staff too, I would visit this place just to have a run out as it is much better than the Pickles Pub near us where the food is nowhere near up to scratch. My last review of the OWB was over a year ago, return visits have not disappointed us and neither did this one. Service finishes at 2.30 arrived at 2.15 and thought we might be rushed, it was quite the opposite. Tom the barman/waiter welcomed us with a smile and was very attentative and helpful. Nice tomato soup, mother very pleased with her fish and chips. Tom recommended the sticky toffee pudding, this was not the usual measly, claggy serving I am used to receiving in pubs and restaurants. Light tasty sponge, decent sized serving with hot custard. Decent coffee again. Comforting open fire.

I've noticed its been not as good recently, but still reasonable pub grub, but tonight was dreadful. I ordered from the specials menu. Chicken, mushroom tagliatelle in a creamy white wine sauce. Sounds good right? It was dreadful! Over cooked pasta to the point of being "mushy" - sauce had never seen cream and was tasteless, unseasoned, and bore no resemblance the description. May be they had a stand in chef as it's a Sunday? Who knows! The rest of the staff however were very pleasant.

Ham, egg and chips came with a double yolked egg and a good portion of home cooked ham. The sandwich was accompanied by salad and skinny fries and the beef was pronounced "very tasty".A very limited choice of dessert on the 2 course menu, hot chocolate fudge gateau or ice cream but both were a good sized portion and very good. We detoured after a 40th party in Wakefield and stumbled Upon this little gem! Decor is very comfortable and relaxing and staff were very welcoming. Served a beautiful roast dinner and the best apple and cinnamon crumble I've ever had! Was the best hangover cure ever and will be returning!

After a terrible start in the Roebuck we ventured down to the old white bear and wow what a difference!!! The staff were fab very attentive and the food was soooooooooooo good!! Puddings were brilliant too!! This is what eating out should be like, we were made to feel very welcome, a polite explanation of the dishes sold out was given straight away and nothing was too much trouble even when I changed my mind on my main course shortly after ordering. We will absolutely be back, lovely place, lovely food, lovely staff!!!

We chose the White Bear for my husband's wake. Even though he was buried at Stanbury it was nice to have the meal at a local venue and it did not disappoint. The chef prepared a hot and cold buffet and it was thoroughly enjoyed and commented on by all friends and relatives. Can recommend the White Bear for other events where there are larger numbers to be catered for.

This pub gets better each time. The staff are brilliant polite. The food menu is small but have never failed to choose anything. Always a specials board. Good choice of hand pump beers. Will go back again.

Had an evening meal here with family. Hope it was a one off but food mediocre. A bit of plastic in the brie didn't help! Serving staff were lovely and very helpful.

The bartender was very kind to let me taste their beers for free. ha! We were trying this game as well where you need to balance a coin on the lemon floating in the water. It was very challenging and was not able to do it. But you should try that, its for charity.

This is our local pub and we love nipping in for a glass of wine or 2. Since the pub and restaurant have been refurbished the food, service and surroundings are fantastic. The food is beautiful and fresh, my favourites are the Steak Pie and the Fish Pie (which is on special board now and again). My 3 year old son loves it and always asks for the pasta. We are visiting again on Friday with my family.

We had breakfast, we were part of the Yorkshire Land Rover Owners Club, there were options available that we had pre ordered, at first it did seem a little disorganised but it wasn't long before the breakfasts started flowing out the kitchen, a hearty full English Breakfast that was plentiful, hot and tasty, and reasonably priced which included coffee. A great start to the day.

Lovely food but again no management presence. young kids serving trying to do their best.shame that when u do see a manager he is sat at the bar with his mates. come on don't let it fall down again.. Appreciate the staff who are doing a good job - otherwise they will leave and the white bears reputation will go down again

We have been frequenting this pub for quite some time so thought I would write a review. The pub itself is lovely, the beer great ( a tad expensive I think) and the staff nice.In the summer the beer garden is second to none and it has the added bonus of allowing dogs both in the garden and the pub, although, even as a dog lover there can be far to many in the pub at times! Now the food ....i would say 99% of the time is good pub grub.I think some of my friends may disagree but I really think the food is good and reasonably priced although I do tend to stick to the sandwiches, starters and sides.I know it has a restaurant but I feel that it is just good pub grub and if I wanted to go out for a meal for birthday or special occasion i wouldn't go here.A lovely country pub for a pint though. .

We have been popping in for a drink on numerous occasions and kept saying we must try the good. Very disappointed. Steak was supposed to be rare and sirloin, not sure it was sirloin, definitely not rare, had a long wait, starter of whitebait with a hint of chilli to share, (no hint of anything especially chilli), a shame because the bill was £60 with a bottle of wine for two courses, one starter and one bottle of wine, we love the pub but wion't be eating again.

Me, my husband and my family ate here just before Christmas. We've been before. The pub was really welcoming and cosy with a lit open fire and tasteful, modern Christmas decorations. We sat right next to the fire and it was beautiful. I believe the dining area may have undergone a refurb as it was much nicer than on our last visit and really inviting. The service was great, a few of us had arrived early and let the staff know about our table booking, the rest of our party was then delayed by about 30 minutes due to local floods resulting in closed roads and kept the staff updated; they were really relaxed about this and managed to keep our table despite the delay. The waiter who served us throughout our meals was really friendly and helpful. The food was hit and miss - for all of us. My starter - garlic mushrooms - was amazing, really tasty and a very generous portion size. Unfortunately I didn't eat it all because I need to leave room for my main course which was disappointingly poor. I had the 'fruit de mer' (a selection of seafood served with a white wine & dill veloute & buttered greens) which was very fishy (ha, my brother laughed at this comment because it is a seafood dish! However, when he tried it he agreed he could understand my point of view). One of the mussels tasted horrendous and put me off eating any more, the crab was delicious but there was a bit too much of it in the dish, the salmon was flavourless and the white fish (not sure what it was specifically) was nice but that's it. I was completely underwhelmed and wished I'd eaten all of my starter and chosen a different main. Others either loved their food or were able to eat it but didn't particularly enjoy it. We didn't have desserts. The pub itself is gorgeous and I would love to go back for drinks and the ambience, the food was overall good but could be better. Great service, thank you.

Visited earlier this week first time for a few years. We were impressed with the pub itself, I understand it has had a makeover recently. We both enjoyed our lunch which was well presented and a reasonable price. The staff we met were friendly but didn't go overboard which is how we like it.The cask beers are brewed just along the road and aren't expensive. We will certainly be calling again.

Two visits to this restaurant in the last month, so it hasn't disappointed. This pub has been here for many years and just recently has gained a reputation for good food. The menu is quite compact, with a few specials on the board, but the food is good and it is plentiful. There is a good atmosphere, great beers and reasonable prices. The service is good and friendly. You don't need a fancy setting for a good meal, just traditional menus and good local know how.

Friendly pub, does slightly unusual pub grub, eg I had "posh mac and cheese" - not a burger but macaroni cheese with tempura veg on the side (only spoilt by veg being rather over-cooked). Partner had black pudding and duck egg salad. Very welcoming to dogs.

Great food but service was a little on the slow side and when oh when will restaurants realise that you need to serve kids first!! They are ALWAYS hungrier than adults & take longer to eat. All the adults had their food before my kids were served. Gggrrrr.

Mine was delicious, and everyone else's looked wonderful too. We all enjoyed our meal together and no one had a complaint, the overall opinion was - brill food, will come again !

Unfortunately, the worst meal I've ever had at a Weatherspoons. Gourmet steak for me and char grilled chicken for my wife. Both sent back as being tough and uneatable. I suspect these had been pre-cooked and warmed up. The replacements were marginally better but not much. Very dissapointed.

We came here not knowing any review or the place itself. We came on a Thursday evening about 6pm, were greeted politely and shown to a table. The server provided us with menus and came back five minutes later to take our order. Prices are reasonable, portions are a good size and the service and food were excellent. I don't always believe the odd negative review of Fish n Chip Restaurants as not all positive reviews are recorded, just the negative ones. We will definitely be returning when we are in the area again.

Waited over 15 minutes to get served a drink. One uninterested barman for over 70 people. Had pre-ordered our food . It was given to someone else. The management refused to replace it as the kitchen was about to shut. Very arrogant attitude. On the plus side, a good pint of beer. Ate next door at the very friendly Lister Arms.

We booked a table here the other night for 5.30 and we had the fish pie and lamb shank and a pint. Food arrived in good time. The portion sizes were huge and very tasty and only just fit on the plates. The food was definitely warm enough as it took a while to cool to eating temperature. The Fish pie had lots of fish and prawns in it aswell as a really delicious sauce and creamy mashed potato. The lamb shank was large and very tasty. Nice friendly staff. Very reasonable prices and good beer. Decor had a nice old fashioned pub charm which unfortunately you don't see anymore with bistro ponsy pubs everywhere. Not sure where all the negative reviews of this pub are from, probably by miserable customers who expect royal service and silver tableware but don't want to pay the price for it. Would highly recommend this family run pub.

I hated the smell inside. It smells of stale bleach which is overpowering. I don't know what they use to clean but it really put me off my meal unfortunately.
