I have been twice in the last 6 weeks, both on a Sunday for a roast, which I assume is their busiest day. Although the staff were great and very apologetic for the long 45min/1hr wait on both occasions, the food quality wasn’t great. It states on the menu it comes with veg, I had one green bean and one tiny boiled carrot on one occasion, and all the plates it just seemed very lacking for the price we were paying. On the other occasion we had the Barnsley chop, and it was so tough our arms were sore from trying to cut it. It’s a great pub, and a place I love to bring visitors and previous years it has been better, so I hope it can improve.

The menu for this pub is huge and I was worried that quality wouldn't match up. However, we both had burgers which were really good. Freshly prepared and nice and meaty, no complaints whatsoever. Accompaniments were good quality and plentiful. Very impressed. I have taken one star off for the wine though - there was no price list so I just chose randomly but accidentally ended up with a medium and then small glass of wine which together cost £18, which seemed very steep to me. We'd visit again but this time I'd make sure I saw a price list before ordering! Service is friendly and it's always full so make sure you book a table.

Fairly disappointed after hearing good things about Devonshire as a ‘brand’. We went on a warm autumn day after a walk with the puppy. We sat in the dog friendly indoor section, warm greeting and lovely seating area. We ordered a few meals and waited quite a while. We ordered a chicken and bacon sandwich that was absolutely caked in mayo, so couldn’t taste anything else. The chilli was ok, with a nice addition of warmed tortillas rather than the usual ‘Doritos’, but the kids fish was overcooked leaving it fairly chewy. The Cajun fries were really nice but completely overpriced for a small tub of seasoned chips. Really loved the day out in Grassington, but will make try a different place to eat next time.

There's a smell of bleach when you go into the pub which is clearly from the cleaning products they use, that said the food was great, I would like to return for more excellent food but not until they have started using food safe antibacterial products to clean there tables and food areas. Was also given a wet menu , which just makes the experience poor.

Booked in for dinner. Nice busy cosy restaurant and seen too quickly. I asked for the wine list. There were names of wine on the wall with a letter but no prices. Ordered food and was told the wine list was being printed off because it had the wrong price on. Twenty minutes later and still no wine list I was again asked if I wanted to order the wine. The waitress said I’d need to wait for the list if I wanted to know any prices before ordering it ? ? ? which I did. Anyway soon a list came. Just names , no maker, region, description, ABV. just a (quite high) price. Anyway I then ordered keen to crack on. Service friendly, food tasty enough and ok. Overpriced really but choca block none the less.

I've been in this pub loads of times for drinks and food and am never disappointed. Food is delicious and well cooked, staff are lovely and friendly and always have time for a chat. Dogs welcome too. I've seen some reviews talk about the price of drinks, but higher prices are pretty standard in the national parks. You want cheap rubbish, stick to chains and inner cities. Great selection of drinks and food at the Devonshire, plus the pub frontage appears on All Creatures Great and Small, so if you're a fan, take a peek!

We were staying in Grassington for the Bank Holiday, and due to the awful weather abandoned our walk and adjourned to the Devonshire for drinks. Being a Bank Holiday Sunday, the pub was very busy with lots of people dining. The drinks prices though! It looks very similar to a Weatherspoons when you walk in, but there the resemblance ends. We live in an expensive part of Yorkshire, where at our local (not a Spoons) we pay for a pint of Moretti/San Miguel and a medium glass of white wine around £10.50. Here at the Devonshire exact same drinks £16.50! Got talking to some locals, and they get a hefty discount with a locals loyalty card, so clearly this overpricing is squarely aimed at tourists. It's a 3 star establishment charging 5 star prices.

Food first night was great but poor on second night. They have a great selection on the menu and the prawn skewers were delicious. On the second night I had the ribs, they were overcooked and fatty. The girl did reduce the bill which was something. It’s worth a visit but be prepared to wait a little while for your food and keep your fingers crossed it’s not overcooked!

Stopped here for food after a long walk. Very busy when we arrived but managed to get a nice table outside in the sun. Nice menu and went inside to order. There was two groups of people so we ordered separately but within a few minutes of each other. 25 mins later some of the food came out (from the first group that ordered) Ten mins later I went inside to ask how long our food would be and was told it was 'next out'. After an hour our food finally arrived! (And our friends had already long finished eating their meals) There was no real apology for the long wait, and I can only assume they somehow missed our order and only started cooking it once I went in to ask about it. I ordered the 'smash burger' which was ok. However the meat itself was dry and it was not definitely not a smash burger. Please do not call it a smash burger if it's not smashed! It was just 2 small patties of regular burger thickness with a lot of really lovely cheese on top. The thick chips were very nice but sorry to say I've had much better burgers for a cheaper price elsewhere. Not a great first impression and will try a different restaurant in town next time.

Not a single member of staff greeted us in fact they blatantly ignored us stood at the door. We continued through to the bar that was not overly busy but still seemed to take a while to get served. Eventually got our table which was only available for a set period of time , the food was poor and over priced the table service didn't even exist had to find someone to ask for condiments for my children and waited nearly 30 minutes for our plates to be moved and a desert menu.left feeling really brassed off and let down. I must stress that it wasn't busy and therefore the service should have been brilliant. Went to the black horse the night before amazing service fantastic food and no time limit on your table.

A pretty chaotic experience if I’m being honest! I walked into the place and the staff seemed stressed out with how rammed the place was. I asked a waitress if I could be seated - she said ‘sorry, I’m really busy right now’. When I was eventually seated, it was on the aisle - where people were walking/running up and down! I just wanted to sit and eat in peace! I asked to move and they were nice enough to seat me somewhere a bit more comfortable. My drink and meal came in good time and the food was actually pretty good. I had a clear view of the bar and the mishaps that followed! Several tables were waiting a long time for their meals, a few customers came to the bar staff asking where their food was. From what I heard, I don’t think one of the waiters put the food order through for one table. I feel like the staff probably needed a stiff drink after today. They look overworked and unable to cope with the demand. Management need to sort it out. Not the quiet, idyllic pub you expect in such a beautiful village.

Went in for last orders after staying elsewhere in Grassington (which is beautiful and well worth the visit). We had our dog with us. It was pretty busy, as there was a quiz on that we could hear from the square (more on that in a bit). As it was gone 10pm it was a bit chilly out so we decided to find a space inside. There was one room that was suspiciously quiet so I thought that must be a restaurant so I looked all round the wall, doorway for any sign that it was food only. Couldn't see one. Asked the two tables that were sat in there, they didn't know. A staff member came up to us and said can I help so I asked if we could sit in there. He shooed us out sharpish saying, 'Not with a dog, ABSOLUTELY NOT!' Personally, I feel a 'No, sorry' would have been sufficient. Now not sure I wanted to stay, he gestured to a table in front of the quiz master. It was very loud there as it was in front of the speaker as well as the quizmaster. I said it was a bit loud there and the guy dead eyed me and said 'There's a quiz on, love'. Omfg. PATRONISING. Like I said, we knew before we went in. My point was the table was front and centre to the speakers. Anyway, he walked away, obviously uninterested in wether we stayed or left - we left. Blighted an otherwise wonderful trip to the Dales and the beautiful market town of Grassington. Doubly disappointing as we'd been looking forward to going to the Devonshire. Don't let it put you off going to Grassington. We went to other super welcoming places there and it's gorgeous (shout out the Black Horse which was fabulous).

I attended the Devonshire in Grassington with 5 of my friends yesterday afternoon (outside of course) following the new restrictions, we ordered our food - starters and mains. Firstly, they brought all our food out together (starters and mains) and when we addressed this situation they basically said tough. So we had to sit there with our sandwiches going stale and our chips going cold whilst we ate our starter. I think this is appalling when it was them who messed up. Secondly, a waiter spilt a drink over one of my friends and no apology was given, in fact he said ‘maybe you shouldn’t of grabbed that beer off that tray’. He was very rude and unpleasant. One waiter was very lovely and pleasant and apologetic - which we all appreciated. A tall young man with glasses. After this we were asked to leave (which yes I understand) and have no qualms about but when we have been asked to leave (not offered a pudding of any sort) when people inside (clearly not from the same household) can sit all afternoon and not be questioned or asked to leave. I think it’s a joke. I definitely won’t be returning. Appalling. I think if we had been of an older age group we wouldn’t have had this service. Seems unfair.

We went for a drink at this pub and didn't like the lack of physical distancing. It felt like a busy pub with lots of people crammed in. The managers were not wearing masks, the staff were. However, if a person in hospitality can't wear a cloth mask it would be better if they wore a face shield. If neither are possible then regular, obvious, hand sanitising and washing are a must.I was unimpressed by the management (or those who appeared to be the people who were in charge. Roast parsnips and roast potatoes. The waitress then say she will bring the veg out! Another plate with cauli cheese, cauliflower, baby corn, broc and mange tout arrives. Piping hot and delicious. Before I explain our meal I have to say that the staff were good. I ordered pork belly and my husband ordered mince and onion pie with triple cooked chips. The rind on my belly pork was soft and there was only a tiny piece of meat at one end of it, the rest was a pure block of fat. I know belly pork is fatty but apart from the small piece of meat at the end it was pure fat. I sent it back and ordered smoked haddock fishcakes instead. Unfortunately, there was a lot of black fish skin in both cakes. My husbands pie was way overcooked, pastry very hard and meat dry (we think the pie was triple cooked as well as the chips). Maybe we were just very unlucky.

Whilst Saying at other accommodation in the village our breakfast was provided by The Devonshire. During our three night stay we ate breakfast three times, dinner (lunch) once and tea (dinner) three times. It was all very good and apart from a little bit of tin foil on my crème brûlée we couldn't fault it.There is a good selection of drinks and snacks at the bar and Covid measures were well implemented with a good balance between safety and maintaining a pub like atmosphere. The pub is well presented and has ample seating to accommodate the numerous visitors including outside to the front and rear.We found the hosts, Kirsty and Matt friendly, helpful, patient and professional in their dealings with customers in sometimes very busy and challenging situations. The public can be very unforgiving at times. Nick and Steve behind the bar are a credit to the place and provided great service and a welcoming approach finding time despite never stopping, to chat and laugh with everyone who took the time to do so. The rest of the staff went about their days with a smile on their faces always willing to help. For such a busy place in these challenging times we couldn't fault it. Just plan ahead, book your table and consider how hard people are working to ensure you can go out and enjoy yourself.Thank you to all the team for helping to make our stay such a good one. We'll probably stop there too next time we visit!

I don’t understand why so many reviewers give five stars to ordinary decent pub grub. There is nothing wrong with average, excellent should be reserved for really outstanding food and service, which is not something to be expected in an ordinary decent pub. We fancied a dessert instead of a starter so ordered a garlic pizza bread as a starter to tide us over, but it was under-cooked and stodgy. Main courses were haddock fishcakes which were mostly potato, and scampi which was - just scampi. My wife enjoyed a nice crème brûlée and my cheeseboard was very good. With a bottle of wine and a gin & tonic the bill was less than £80. Very average.

Dog friendly restaurant. We went in at 11.30 am for coffee and cake. We were asked to sign in as per coronavirus instructions. Had a lemon drizzle cake which was superb i could have eaten it again, my son had caramels cake which was also good. Tea and coffee hot, staff very friendly. Highly recomended

We visited Grassington for the weekend and this is where we ended up every day. Clean, very attentive bar staff and you can always subtly here the landlord checking up on staff and customers (in a good way), decent variety of drinks on offer from Timothy Taylor Ales to mainstream Lagers and a well stocked spirits shelf. We ate here one night, my wife had pork belly on creamy mash and I had the biggest pot of mussels I've had for a long time in a creamy sauce with skin on fries and crusty bread. Prices were extremely reasonable and portion sizes you will not go hungry!!!

Managed to have a delayed 2 night stay thanks to C-19 restrictions being lifted. Mat & Kirsty very welcoming as were all of the staff. Drink great, food great, rooms great-looked after us plus small dog very well. No complaints at all but some might find having to park in pay & display a 5 mins walk away but we were lucky parking in the square opposite

Outdoor tables thoughtfully segregated into a smoking and non-smoking half, plus indoor bar and dining room areas. Well balanced homemade herby tomato soup, the mains of lamb shank & belly pork came inclusive of 6 different accompanying veg. We were happy with the veg, though my mother would have preferred longer cooking for a softer consistency The apple with the belly pork had a subtle flavour from the black pudding. Choice of 5 Timothy Taylor real ales, 50 gins etc. Mat, Kirsty and waitresses friendly, welcoming and efficient. Well managed re covid. A great meal, good value at full price, but we were happy to take the £10 'eat out to help out'

Really lovely team who are happy to help with your every need. The room was spacious, really nicely decorated and it’s quiet which was surprising as it faced the square.

Welcoming but with limitations. The menu is extensive and it will cater for all, a great travellers stop-off in this small village. Food was really nice and service was good too, nothing too amazing, but the it’s worth a go!

Covid safe visit to this pub on a dull day in Grassington. Very organised on arrival a hand sanitiser machine with touch screen device to enter your details, name and contact number. Staff were organised and courteous. We sat in a corner of one of the eating rooms with just one other party also present but sat at a good distance from us. The lunch menu had a nice selection of traditional dishes with sandwiches so plenty of options. James our waiter was very efficient and brought everything to the table along with cutlery and condiments, drinks etc. We felt safe the whole time there and I would recommend The Devonshire to anyone who wants to venture out for a meal in safe surroundings when visiting the Grassington area.

So nice to be back in our Dev. There is no need for any anxiety. All the recommended safety precautions are in place, and Mat is manning the door to welcome and sign in the customers, and to make sure no one comes inside without there being a table available for them. Locals are all greeted by name, as usual, and visitors are most warmly welcomed and made to feel at home. I had the roast lamb Sunday lunch, which was plentiful, tasty, and came with six of my five a day, plus the lovely crispy roast potatoes. No room for pudding, unfortunately. I’ll just have to go another day for that, after a delicious home made soup perhaps, or I might have to go for a bargain under five pounds deal for coffee and a slice of one of their home made cake selection...... so many problems choosing what to have! The couple at the table next to me were sharing a wonderful looking pizza too..........

Had an enjoyable and good value meal. 3 courses £15. Good smoked haddock fishcakes for starter, excellent puddings. Main courses were straightforward but well cooked and presented and enjoyable. Beer a touch expensive. (Rest of menu looks good)

We called in just on speck and asked if food was available. They were serving Sunday roast with a good selection of meats. The service and the food was top class - highly recommended - great food at a great price!

We came here not knowing any review or the place itself. We came on a Thursday evening about 6pm, were greeted politely and shown to a table. The server provided us with menus and came back five minutes later to take our order. Prices are reasonable, portions are a good size and the service and food were excellent. I don't always believe the odd negative review of Fish n Chip Restaurants as not all positive reviews are recorded, just the negative ones. We will definitely be returning when we are in the area again.

Unfortunately, the worst meal I've ever had at a Weatherspoons. Gourmet steak for me and char grilled chicken for my wife. Both sent back as being tough and uneatable. I suspect these had been pre-cooked and warmed up. The replacements were marginally better but not much. Very dissapointed.

Waited over 15 minutes to get served a drink. One uninterested barman for over 70 people. Had pre-ordered our food . It was given to someone else. The management refused to replace it as the kitchen was about to shut. Very arrogant attitude. On the plus side, a good pint of beer. Ate next door at the very friendly Lister Arms.

The Royal Shepherd Inn is a fabulous, friendly, traditional pub. We ate here twice and the food was delicious and portions were generous. Friendly staff and warm and welcoming atmosphere.
