Went in here with family had drinks and a portion of chips, (3 pints, coke, disarano and ginger ale, £32. Not the cheapest of places but good service and a good selection of beers, dog friendly too (we had dog with us). Plenty of room and outside space is big and some of it covered.

We stayed in the family room and couldn't fault it, plenty of space, nice and clean, all facilities you'd need. We also ate in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast, both of which were incredible. Great portion sizes, brilliant quality food and excellent beer. Will absolutely be staying again.

Lovely pub that is much bigger than it looks from the outside! Good sized room and great food and drink on offer. Plus they had a good gluten free offer, just ask and they will let you know what they can do. You have to pay for your dog to stay too, but 50% of the money goes to a local dog shelter/charity

Visited this pub as part of a few days break in Yorkshire. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We visited early evening and were told hot food was available. There were plenty of tables available. The menu was varied and contained what you would expect to see in a pub like this,ie nothing fancy but basic good grub! We ordered the cheese pie (Wensleydale & leek) with chips. It arrived and was obviously freshly cooked. It was delicious! I choose a pint of tge local ale, whilst my wife had water. Nothing was too much trouble. The bill for two was very reasonable. Many thanks to Ryan & his staff for a pleasant experience. Would definately visit again if in the area.

Our trip to the Golden Lion with friends was great. The staff were very friendly and efficient and our evening meal was very enjoyable and good value for money. We stayed in room fourteen which was beautiful. Even though there is no car park at the hotel we parked for 24 hours at the Social Club for just over £5 and this is 2 minutes walk from the Golden Lion. We would definitely stay again and will recommend to family and friends.

Extremely cold pub. Sat with our coat on by the open fire. Had a cask which was lovely. Everyone was sat with their coat on complaining about the cold. Heating wasn’t on and not coming on. Ordered starters they were ok if you don’t mind stale bread and mains was gammon and egg asked for no pineapple supposed to be served with homemade chips , it arrived with fries and pineapple on the gammon , sent it back pineapple was removed but could still taste it , queried re fries was told run out of potatoes!!! We booked in advance for a breakfast with one gluten free person in attendance with us. We did this as they said they had a good gluten free breakfast option. Got there, they took the order , I said ( as the gluten free person) I did not want hash brown or toast, I wasn’t offered any alternate such as an extra mushroom etc When my plate arrived there was no sausage even though I asked for gluten free sausage, again no other option offered , no additional bacon for example (happens all the time at other places I have visited). No reduction in price. We also ordered toast for the other people and that did not arrive, had to ask again and it turned up when we were half way through our breakfast. Incredibly disappointed I actually asked the lady where my sausage was and I was just told, that’s not gluten free!

I don’t give a poor review lightly but I’d have rather had a Subway on a park bench. I don’t like Subway. Let’s start with the good. The staff were all very nice & the food wasn’t bad. It was also the festive period, and the place is a pub after all.. But we couldn’t hear ourselves think for the noise. The actual restaurant area was quieter….but I think we had been given a table in the bar because we had the dog. Fair enough. I had to order at a very noisy bar, getting barged by a group behind who had been out all day drinking. If I look at the website, am told food is “home cooked food made from scratch by our chefs’ and that they champion local producers, that’s what I expect. OK, there is a degree of creative licence in marketing but the Golden Lion pushed it too far. What was served appeared to be out the freezer or batch prepared for ease of service. Don’t get me wrong, the food wasn’t bad. In fact one of our group really enjoyed his steak but he had to switch his hearing aid off because it amplified the racket for him. We were less lucky not being deaf. My partner’s tagline was ‘ok’ as was my beetroot burger. Ok…..the cheese & onion pie, onion rings & mussels were ‘off’, presumably because it was just after Xmas. But I think the chef who made things from scratch was off too. My burger had the ‘form’ of one from a freezer cabinet rather than being moulded by hand. The chips were generic ones too, with a human having very little to do with the potato. And my partner’s starter had a slightly funny taste too. This would all be fine I hadn’t paid the prices of a good restaurant in the expensive city where I’m from. I also know it’s hard to employ good chefs. But promising one thing and delivering another is a poor show. I felt ripped off and it was a relief when we got outside to relative quiet. We didn’t stay for pudding. On another day, I suspect the atmosphere would be better to dine in. But if the Govt hadn’t cut funding to Trading Standards, I’d be asking them to check the credibility of the Golden Lion’s Website.

Bright and pleasant atmosphere and not too noisy although quite full. Good spaces between tables. The order was taken and delivered in good time. The quality of the fish and chips and the burger was exceptional. They were well presented and served in large portions. The waitress service was pleasant and polite. Unfortunately, I could not say the same about the service at the bar. There was no warm welcome, little communication, and no information about the ordering process. When going to the bar for a second drink the barman who was talking to a lady at the bar (who was not ordering) looked at me and carried on his conversation. He then looked at me and said nothing! Just waited for me to speak. Not impressed.

Disgusting! All roast dinners were tepid, very small portions, hardly any vegetables. The gammon was served with a hard fried egg, the chips were hard and black. One of the party of 10 was called away to the telephone and her meal was given to staff to keep warm, when it was requested back, they had served it to another customer although it had been sitting on the table for some 10 mins previously. Had a table booked 5 or 6 weeks in advance for 7.15pm with friends. We arrived at 7pm & were promptly shown to our table. 10 mins later we had our drinks order taken & then our food order. At 7.55pm we still had not received our food & gestured to the waitress to get her attention to ask where our food was, she went & checked & said it would be another 10 to 20 minutes longer & that they had been busy tonight hence the wait, not once did she apologise or even ask if we wanted any more drinks. Our food eventually came out 8.10pm, all looked lovely apart from the fish & chips looked very bland & TBH it was. No one at any time came & checked if our food was ok. When we had finally finished the waiter came & asked if he could take our plates, he cleared half the table & never came back. Another lady came & asked if she could take our plates & it was then that we told her that the service had been absolutely diabolical & the fish was awful, she apologised & said she would pass this on, we asked for the bill, she came back with it 10 mins later & threw it on the table, no offer of a discount !. We paid & left, never to return !

Sunday roast was poor. We visited for Sunday roast after a few hours walking. An overwhelming disappointment in most respects; the only thing that was going for the place was the beer! The roast beef was a couple of slices of wafer thin beef served with a smattering of overcooked veg and a splash of tepid thin gravy + a well aged Yorkshire pudding. The ability to slice beef so thinly speaks volumes for the chef’s skillset, it’s just a shame those skills didn’t stretch to any form of professional pride. Admittedly, it was 16:30-17:00 when we visited, but if they don’t have enough food of the correct quality then they should remove the option from the menu! The other options looked fine! We were so hungry that went to the other pub nearby for a pint and plate of chips to share immediately after eating at the Lion.

An excellent Sunday lunch, with top quality ingredients, cooked perfectly and beautifully presented. Booked the apres ski winter experience in the courtyard part. Really disappointed on arrival that when we went to order the food off the festive menu we were told they were not doing it that night despite us booking specifically for it. Had to order off the normal menu . The wait for the food was ridiculous. Over an hour. Thankfully when it came the settle pudding was delicious and a good plateful. The waiter was very attentive and apologetic for the wait. We were offered money off the bill due to the wait . Lovely food but the kitchen needs to be quicker and also don’t take bookings if you’re not going to honour them!!!!

Great service and quality fish and chips. The food was very good and the staff were friendly and polite. Possibly need more options for light bites.
