The Old Vic in Wakefield

Amazing food and real ale from Ossett Brewery. I had chicken thighs and my partner had special chicken parmo. Both came with amazing salad and chunky chips. Will definitely be going again soon.

Myself and my family get together once a month for a big Sunday lunch and in January tried here (we really have been all over Wakefield and surrounding areas at this point!) and the food was so tasty that we came again in Feb. The pub itself is so cosy with a wonderful, homely atmosphere with a great music playlist and super friendly staff. Especially the bar man, he served us and he was so friendly. The food itself we pre-ordered as there was a lot of us and the food came out swiftly and still piping hot and the food yet again was bang on! The chef always comes out to check on us and she is really lovely and even boxed up one of the meals for us as we had a no show. The best part however and we all raved about this, was they sent out a big plate of tiger bread and butter to mop up the gravy!! What a great touch and we all had a slice (some of us multiple) and thoroughly appreciated it. I’m sure we will be back again when we gather together again in around 6 weeks time! I wish I’d have taken a photo but I will next time!

A great fan of the curried goat here but not available tonight. The alternative choices did not disappoint, taco trio and spicy Parmo chicken. These were freshly cooked so expect a wait but absolutely worth it, relax and enjoy the hospitality and a drink. Highly recommend.

Called in on the off chance as I’d not been here for years and it was always good food! The lady told us they’d taken over a year ago and wow the food was so amazing! The Caribbean menu was brilliant and we can’t wait to go back to sample other things off the menu! The lady chef came out to ask how our food was but didn’t take up our offer to live and cook for us every day haha. Beautiful!

We waited for our food for over an hour… taking into account the whole menu is about chicken, we wondered if they went and harvest chickens from the egg phase and that’s why they took so long. By the end of our meal, our son shared all his melty puffs with the table… and still not chicken. It’s a good venue to come for dinner but ordering around lunch time.

Went in especially on Thursday to book a table for the family for tea tonight. Was interested to see how the place had improved since the refurb. Arrived in good time and the lady behind the bar knew nothing about the booking. Basically couldn't be bothered. When we finally managed to speak to the bar staff (no table service..) she took the whole food order for the 4 of us and after writing the whole thing down told us it would be an hour wait...(its chicken and chips!) . the comedy was compounded by the phone ringing behind the bar all night and no one answering it. Not a good look... we had a bag of crisps each, finished our drinks and left

The best local pub around in Ossett.. So accommodating best atmosphere.. dale and Tanya have made this the most welcoming and most friendliest pub around.. always have a fantastic time .. wish them all the best for the future and we will continue to support them in the future

Enjoyable outdoor Sunday lunch. Excellent Yorkshire Puddings. Good potatoes and veg too and decent beer. Would return.

Visited for Sunday dinner and really enjoyed it. Great friendly pub, food was great with good portion sizes and also alternative choices to traditional Sunday lunch available. Too full to try the desserts although they did sound delicious. Great selection of cask ales. We will definitely return.

Great selection of 8 hand pulled ales including ossett brewery and 3 guest ales all well kept plus a decent selection of lagers and bottled lagers and ciders. Really friendly staff and locals alike. We had a meal too I had the steak n ale pie tender lumps of steak with a rich ale gravy and home made proper chips, my friend had the mixed grill it was huge and he said it was delish, but there were plenty of other options. The new manager and chef only took over just before christmas and I can only wish them every success will definitely be returning

The beer selection is good and well kept. We went for Sunday lunch £7.95 or two for £14. I had the beef which was OK, Yorkshires were 'smart price' and the food was cold apart from the vegetables that came in a small tureen.. so small we had to ask for more ,which were provided without any trouble at all. I don't think we will be eating there again

The pub side of things is fine....the food side was anything but. I'm sure the food is nice, I've been told you don't go away hungry, but the atmosphere in the restaurant area was terrible, no staff came in to see if we wanted anything.

I have read other reviews commenting on the poor customer service skills here but visited anyway, only to witness them myself. A few of my family members have visited here a couple of times over the past year, commenting that the food used to be gorgeous but has gradually gotten worse and worse. We decided to give it one last shot as a farewell before some family went away for a few weeks. There are only three vegetarian options, all of which are essentially a vegetable drowning in cheese with absolutely no thought put into it whatsoever. I personally couldn’t touch the dish I ordered as a giant dish of watery bland cheese and 5 pieces of broccoli wasn’t what I had in mind at all. I pulled a waitress to one side and apologised for the trouble but would it be possible to change my dish at all as I really did not like it. Who I assume to be the male “manager” then proceeding to interrogate and humiliate me in front of the entire pub, commenting “IVE HAD NO COMPLAINTS IN 8 YEARS” which is clearly untrue from the other reviews on here. He laughed in my face and made comments until I was on the brink of tears, threw a fiver at me (the meal was £8) and left me to walk back to my parents’ table shaking. We left out of the back door because we didn’t want to be anywhere near that man again. We saw a sign about his “last farewell” upon entry so hopefully this man will be leaving the establishment soon and they might be able to reinstate some of their former glory. Until then, maybe take a few lessons in how to take polite, constructive criticism well.

This is quite local to me, I wouldn't say I visit it regularly but me and my wife really like it, warm and friendly, a good selection of local beers,food pool,darts and quiz nights,

After having many friends tell me the Sunday dinners were lovely we finally got to the pub before they finished serving & while the "chef" was there Rang up to confirm what time finished serving to be told 3:15 (sign outside pub with times is wrong as states 6pm on Sunday) - we got there at 3 . The young man behind the bar seemed less than enthusiastic we wanted to eat there spending our money! We ordered - he gave the wrong food but hovered as though we would take it anyway .. When he brought the correct meat out it was SHOCKING!Microwave must have been on fullBlast! I don't expect a Sunday dinner to be cooked fresh in every pub - but that was something else!! We complained as I could do better myself to be quite honest and he replied we haven't had any complaints today (no sorry!!) my husband replied you didn't really want us in did you he replied with nothing! We asked for our money back obviously to the point some older woman came out put it on the table without asking what was wrong sorry nothing!!I have had better service at a motorway cafe!The young man serving needs to brush up on his social skills with customers - we spend our hard earned money and chose to do so there ! Overall it's a shame as its a local pub and husband likes the beers but won't be wasting our time orMoney on food here again

Heard so much about this place, and after a busy day my daughter and son in law said they would treat me to sunday lunch. they have tried to go in before and been told they had finished serving, even though the board outside said up to 6pm. we arrived about 3pm and checked if they were still serving, we were told they were. we went straight to the bar to order, 1 pork, 2 beef and 1 chicken dinner. the attitude of the man behind the bar was very "couldn't care less" we sat down and were then brought 2 port dinners, no, we only ordered 1, oh thought you said 2, no, came back with 2 beef dinners. where do I start. the beef looked like it had been cooked the day before and the Yorkshire puddings were burnt on top, the mashed potato was actually the worst I have ever seen and tasted even worse than they looked, the roast potatoes looked like they had been left sitting in fat, no crispiness just soggy, horrible. we told the person behind the bar we could not eat the food. he came and collected the food. we had to engage him to say how disappointed we were. suddently a woman popped up and slammed our £26.50 on the table, between my 2 grand-daughters without saying a word and just turned and went. I will not be going here again !!

We visited a couple of weeks ago hoping to have lunch but was told the cheff was off. The beers are very nice though so we planned to revisit, hoping for a meal this time.Sadly, it didn't go to plan. According to their website they open and serve food from 12 noon. We arrived at 10 past 12 and the place was locked up. Not wanting to hang around long I telephoned to ask if they were opening today. Yes, the female voice answered. What time? I enquired. . . 12 she said. I made light of this and said but it's gone 12 and I'm outside. She was quite abrupt - clearly, we, as customers, had interrupted something. I attempted to make conversation again but she wasn't interested.When I tried to order lunch I was informed food isn't available until 3pm (this wasn't mentioned on our first visit).We stayed for a couple of drinks and was served by a gentleman who was much more friendly. He apologised and explained that the lack of lunch time custom had meant they had moved meal availability to later in the day. I do get that but the website needs to be updated. If it wasn't for this friendly gentleman my review would be one star. The female with her poor attitude lets the place down.

Had heard great reviews for the food here and they were all spot on. Fabulous food big portions which normally over face me but I couldn’t stop eating it was so tasty. I had the chicken pie and my husband had the trio of Cajun pork steaks. Had trouble choosing because the menu all sounds so good. Will definitely be back and will bring family and friends. The prices are also very reasonable

Fancied some trad, non-chain pub grub so tried the Old Vic. Excellent home cooked food, great value, very generous portions and good beers to top it off. Great find and will be back soon.

Food looked good lads loved it swear I saw Ryan droll a little bit, Jono the ape seemed to be chewing more than the normal chewing time but he didn’t complain. Didn’t feel like marks head was in it tonight with the news from the doctor. Seph got a girls steak so can’t really comment. All in all good trip.

Nice pub with good home cooked food. It sometimes has local bands or singers on and there is always a fantastic range of craft beers for the enthusiast. Wish it was our local !

Booked Saturday evening for 4. Place was busy but our table had been reserved. The food was quickly served by very efficient staff. Great home made chips. Very generous portions. Very well cooked. All in all a very satisfactory experience. Great choices of beers. Definitely recommend.

Excellent little pub with a great selection of ales. It had a small food menu with typical pub grub. Liver and onion, steak pie etc. We just had a kids chicken nugget meal with chips for £4 and I can honestly say that it's the best value kids meal I've ever seen. All home cooked and non of that frozen stuff. The nuggets were proper breats and the chips were to die for!

Tuve sobresaliente y patatas fritas. Un plato enorme de comida. Dos grandes piezas de jugosas sobresaliente, patatas fritas, guisantes, huevo encantador, tomate y champiñones todos por 7 libras. 95! Mi amigo tenía gambas y patatas fritas. Quedé muy impresionado y sin duda lo recomiendo. Personal amable y un ambiente relajado.

Re visitado después de varios años y quedé muy satisfecho con la fantástica bienvenida amigable, gran y excelente comida. Los tamaños de las porciones eran enormes, pero la calidad no estaba comprometido. La mejor comida que he tenido en mucho tiempo. Patatas fritas caseras adecuado y verdura fresca porciones de carne. amplio. Lo recomiendo altamente. Fantástico. A un precio muy razonable. Almorzamos allí y teníamos dos dietas vegetariano en nuestro grupo, cuando llamamos para reservar les dimos el aviso. Estábamos tan contentos que nuestros amigos vegetariana tenía algo para comer. Cargar toda la experiencia un placer gracias

This is a great pub, with the best beer and food around. I've eaten here a few times now and it's food, proper, honest home cooked food. If you want silver service, napkins placed on ya lap then go somewhere else, thats not what this place is about. Staff and customers make a great atmosphere in here what a proper pub should be.

Food was good served by a miserable lady. Couldn't even manage a smile.Toilets..... only go if you need to. Filthy.

Me and the wife eat regularly at the old vic. If your looking faffy food with table service and and all the bells and whistles.Then it's not here. If your looking for delicious genuine home cooked grub. Proper puddings. And portions the size of west yorkshire then this is the place. The atmosphere is great. The regulars friendly. A proper land lord and Lady. The selection of ales are great. And they do the best pint of San miguel this side of Spain. Superb.

Had a brilliant time at The Old Vic for a special occasion this weekend. Two of our party ordered the giant mixed grills.. I have never seen anything like them in my life. Ginormous... But super tasty! Great homemade chips and really lovely generous kids portions. Brilliant value all round. We will be back!!! :-)

We go often! It is a fairly limited menu but all the items are delicious. You are best calling in advance because there is only proper seating for 18 in the dining area. It can get. A little chilly in there because it's an extension. I recommend the got beef baguette x

Great pub serving a variety of real ales. Food is proper home cooked servings. Quiz night (Tuesday ) is great fun with free supper laid on. Landlord is really friendly and it's always busy. I would suggest booking if your party is large.

Walked in, asked about food and seating availability. Found own seats and ordered first drinks at bar. Having asked about seating for eating you would assume someone would bring menu's. No didn't happen, landlord simply stood at end of bar and watched the football.Never experienced anything quite like it?

The food at the Old Vic is fantastic. Real, home cooked food, generous portions and well presented. We've eaten here a couple of times and have been blown away by the quality of the food and exceptional value for money. Sunday lunch was delicious. The beef and turkey were succulent and very tender, fresh vegetables, roast, new and mashed potatoes and home made gravy and Yorkshire Puddings, absolutely delicious. The home made steak pie and proper chips are to die for too. Well worth a visit. The pub is traditional with a great atmosphere, the staff are a credit to the landlord and landlady who are a great couple and offer a very warm welcome to all.

The pub is well run and food is great value with a good choice available. Plenty of drink choices with various guest beers.Would recommend to visit as never had a bad meal here.

Went for a family birthday and it was a joke from start to finish. My husband had to go and get the menus as we had sat and waited for so long. When the waitress finally came to take our order she managed to get mine completely wrong so when my "filled" Yorkshire pudding was brought out it was actually an empty Yorkshire pudding with veg and gravy. We found the funny side of it but expected her to go and get the sausages that were meant to be inside it but she never actually came back!! My mother in law couldn't eat her steak as it tasted so burnt. The mixed grills are just huge plates of cheap cuts of meat. Afterwards someone came in to ask whether everything was ok to which we explained about the Yorkshire pudding and the steak. the young lad then came back with the order and almost blamed us because the waitress didn't write sausages down. Up to this point we had laughed it all off as it's only cheap pub food so what do you expect but that was just rude. Then to top it off when we went to pay, the manager,I assume, said he had only charged us half price for the Yorkshire pudding and then asked if everything else was ok. My husband started off by saying how it's a lovely pub and our family drink in there often but the food was very average and the service wasn't very good. However whilst talking the manager just turned his back on him. Don't ask for people's opinions if you can't take constructive criticism! Cheap pub grub - so you get (sometimes if they write it down properly) what you pay for. But service is a joke and pints are not poured correctly which is poor for an Ossett brewery pub. The manager also needs to take some lessons on hospitality. Will not be rushing back for a drink and definitely will not waste our money on food. Go to the kaye arms. Same prices for two meals on the special and much better food and far far superior service.

never fails to amaze me how you can be served the best steak pie ever served with proper chips and fresh veg with superb gravy for such a reasonable price. Lovely little Ossett Brewery pub, with a good selection on the bar for those that don’t like the ales on offer. The place is nicely done out, with friendly helpful staff. The food on offer is great, good pub grub at reasonable prices, with healthy sized portions. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

This is a small traditional pub serving a variety of quality fine ales with very friendly staff. The let down is if you go at the wrong time you will be subjected to having to watch and listen to whatever sport is on at the time on a massive 8ft x 6ft screen. No screen = a nice sociable relaxing country style pub.With screen = City centre style, noisy pub.

Excellent selection of beers. Really like the way this pub is decorated and furnished. Bar staff very friendly. Eaten here a couple of times and food is really nice. Excellent value for money, as hige portions. Would recommend eating here, or just popping in for a pint.

My third visit after being introduced by friends who had raved about the food here - and with good reason. The meat served at The Old Vic is amazing, not only in quality but in the quantity, which beat each member of our group. We are all heart eaters but nobody was able to clear their plate. Can fully recommend. A must!

We had booked for 2 of us to eat this evening but met up with 3 friends who wanted to join us. The staff were very helpful and friendly and arranged a table in the restaurant section at the back of the pub. The food was well cooked to our individual preferences and very good value. At just over £40 for 5 of us, including 3 excellent steaks, we will certainly be going back!

Went to try the old Vic for the first time last night. We regular go to other Ossett Brewery pubs in the area for drinks and were looking forward to dining in one for the first time. However despite the website saying food would be served until 8 and it only being 7pm we were turned away for food! No explanation given other than 'too many orders'! We were happy to wait but were flatly told there would be no more food served.We had arrived by taxi and were left with a 15 minute walk in the cold to find food elsewhere. Reading other reviews it would seem this has happened to other potential customers. I wouldn't advise any one to turn up on the off chance for food. We will not be returning to the Old Vic!

Called on a recent lunchtime. I'd no worries about the beer as I knew it would pass muster. I liked the simple menu that contained everything one might want for a pub lunch. I ordered steak pie and chips. The pie consisted on at least three table spoons of chunky pieces of steak in an unctious gravy. I was pleased that the chips were hand cut and not the frozen variety. Accompanying my meal was a an oval glass dish containing some mashed swede, carrots and broccoli. All in all there was enough on the table to feed two and very tasty it was for a very reasonable price. I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Superb beer from ossett brewery. Good wholesome home cooked food. Very friendly welcoming service and nice small terrace at back.

Popped in here to meet friends who live in the area and wow. What a great gem. A great selection of ale and the food was fab. Well done to all. I will be back if in the area again.

This pub is our local. This is the third time we have been told that they are not serving food ! Tonight this was at 7pm ! Inconsistency is not good for business ! You either serve food at regular times or don't bother at all ! You have lost our custom and those of our friends ! Such a shame as we have had good meals here in the past.

Excellent beer from Ossett Brewery coupled with good, very reasonably priced food and a great atmosphere make this a favourite pub for regulars and visitors alike.

Excellent menu choice.. U get a right plate full. No-one will leave this pub hungry! Never had a bad meal n eaten here loads.. Think u can eat the MASSIVE mixed grill???Real ale pub. No meals on a Mon. Definitely recommend!
