Hampsons PlantWorld Cafe in Wakefield

As a lover of gardening, this place has EVERYTHING. From seeds to trees, from secateurs to 12ft swimming pools. Even my daughter was mesmerised by the fish on sale. Would definitely recommend for someone looking to go a little further than simply laying down bedding plants or weeding a border. This place is serious about getting that perfect outdoor escape

Great garden centre just always check your receipt as twice we have been over charged and keep hold of it incase of for any electrical products that are faulty

Lovely breakfast and bought bedding plants and fish for the pond all brilliant value. Also 2 bunches of flowers for £6 which filled 3 vases an excellent buy!

Ok. Don't like that you can't take dogs, I mean, surely kids are more hazardous. Also, butchers? I mean, it's 2025, not 1985! Good points, decent staff, good range of plants and nice ornaments.

Loads of different plants. Very busy. A lot of different stands with cakes, butchers, cafe, greengrocer, convenience, cards. It's getting a bit too big and it does not flow logically. The prices are getting very big as well.

Not just an affordable garden centre but there isn't much it doesn't sell. It's fantastic!

It's a big place, it's the ideal place to spend a few hours & a few quid! We only came for an hour & spent over £50 on items we didn't know we wanted!

Very expensive for what I think of a garden centre, compared to others in the area. But I must say they do a superb selection of cooked pies...

Unbelievable, this place has an outdoor plant centre and pet store yet unable to take dogs in there I’ve never heard of it not being able to take a dog into a garden centre. Maybe it should take a lesson from places like Wyedale garden centres that have separate dining areas for dogs and dogs are made to feel welcome. We have just come from a pub not far away where dogs were free to go in and food has been served. Been going to this Garden centre a few years now before we got our dog, even department stores shops and most places now are dog friendly but this particular Open air Garden Centre for some reason it’s different,will never return to that garden centre again.

Please save you money absolutely disgusting breakfast. Two small breakfast one cup of tea as it’s £3 for one tea so £20 all in but omg the breakfast was disgusting cold and the sausage was just awful and to top it all all we could smell was fish that they must of been cooking . Needless to say we left it all . Must be one of the worst breakfast we have had

The garden centre is well stocked with everything you need. Well worth a visit

Went into the cafe and ordered the pie and chips . Was horrified to find lumps of fat in the pie .the chips was just barely warm. Wast of money and time . Seems to have gone downhill since our last visit.

Massive garden centre with a wide variety of options including food/restaurant and ample parking. Staff are friendly - you can practically get everything from here. Highly recommend a visit.

Good value and wide arrangement of plants

The price of ice cream has shoot up,one small cornet with second rate 99 chocolate flake cost in £3.70.The a potion of chips that consisted of one potato was dearer than the chip shops.

A great place to go for plants,the variety and excellent stock make it a real go-to nursery. Indoor shopping lacks structure and is an odd mixture of product.Would be great opportunity for an upgrade. Cafe is good value too.

This is the best plant place you can go in Yorkshire there sell everything from plants/compost/fruit & veg/shrubs & fruit trees garden furniture there have a small cafe and a large restaurant and garden ornaments and fountains and tools and more they is plenty of parking a must for garden lovers

Definitely recommend here got lots of bulbs and compost, they have a cafe,fish shop and ice cream parlour and alot cheaper than most of the rip off garden centre's. Denby Dale turn off m1 turn left and a couple of hundred metres up the road.

I have been a loyal customer of Hampsons for years and have always enjoyed my visits. However, I recently had an unpleasant experience in the pet section that I feel needs to be addressed. While in the fish tanks department, I was on a video call with my boyfriend, showing him three fish tanks as he was interested in purchasing one. A staff member rudely told me that it was “illegal” to record in shops. I responded that it wasn’t illegal and mentioned that if this was store policy, it should be clearly displayed on a sign. Despite this, she did not ask me to stop filming or enforce the supposed rule, making her comment feel unnecessary. I ended the call and continued browsing the pet section. However, on my way out, I noticed a group of people openly taking photos and videos right next to the same staff member—yet she said nothing to them. This inconsistency was frustrating, as it seemed I had been singled out unfairly. I am still giving a 4-star rating because I love Hampsons and have never had an issue before. However, I believe the staff in the pet section would benefit from customer service training to ensure they communicate policies respectfully and consistently. If there is indeed a rule against video calls or filming, it should be clearly posted to avoid confusion and frustration.

Stopped for a look around on way home from xscape garden centre good prices but food very poor and tasteless chips from frozen no taste and coffee Luke warm will never eat there again

On Saturday 22nd March 2025, I purchased 3 ice creams, which cost me around £10.00. Immediately as I sat down, mine suddenly fell on me in one big lump, badly staining my skirt, (see photographs), and it also fell onto my top and handbag. After calling for assistance, I was merely handed a wet cloth and nothing else was offered, not even a replacement. The customer service fell very short, as I had ice cream all over my hands and clothing. I had to walk around your store afterwards, looking like I was incontinent, which was embarrassing. We cut the visit short and went home. After a lot of scrubbing at home, and two washes in the washing machine, I managed to remove the chocolate stains. At the time, I assumed the ice cream had just not been patted down correctly and this was a one-off. Then my friends' daughters ice cream fell off as well and I grabbed it as it was falling and was again left with ice cream fingers. Something clearly wasn't right in the preparation. Thereafter my friends cone suddenly snapped at the bottom and her whole ice cream fell onto the floor. She was given a cheaper replacement and someone cleared it up from the floor. Staff had clearly not been trained in the correct preparation of ice creams and damaged cones were being given to customers. I've never seen anything like this before, it was a really awful experience. As adults we are quite capable of eating ice creams without any adaptations and I was far from happy. I appreciated that sometimes things went wrong, however this was far from the norm. I emailed my complaint to Hampsons Plant World, but they failed to respond. This tells you all you need to know about this business.

Appauling service on deli counter yesterday . Totally ignored by the older assistant and then called a liar by the other one !! Finally got served -scone and quiche was lovely but the service was disgraceful Cafe -£7.25 for a cheese salad breadcake Daylight robbery Plants -Lovely but overpriced I shall not be returning

Visited today . Ordered 2 hot beef and onion sandwiches with chips for my husband and myself. Have to say we have never had a more bland, tasteless meal in all our years eating out. Absolutely no taste at all, sandwiches barely warm, just tasteless slush and I have just realised while writing this that there were no onions in the sandwiches either! A total waste of money. Indeed we both left three quarters of the rubbish that was on our plates. Never again, and with a coke and cup of tea the total was just over £26. Absolute rubbish!

Called in for a couple of coffees we waited ages the two behind the counter were really slow with not much idea. My wife he'd to go to the counter and ask if they had forgot our order one of the servers made our drinks straight away.

Used to get good portions and good value Now portions are smaller on smaller plates and the prices have gone up so we will not be eating here again.

Meals overpriced for what you get have noticed portion sizes are now smaller on smaller plates and dishes than used to be the case. But prices have just increased will not be returning.

I don’t normally write a lot of reviews but this one merited a good one. I’ve been to Hampson's loads of times but this year they really seem to have upped their game. We bought our Christmas tree from them this year, it didn’t drop a needle in a month. The reason I’m writing a review though is because I recently went to buy some indoor hanging plants for our sandwich shop in town. All the staff were really helpful but one in particular (I think she said her name was Charlie) went above and beyond with giving us advice, showed an absolutely incredible knowledge of each plant and even helped us figure out how to hang our pots using rope. Absolutely class experience! Great service.

This cafe used to be great value and hearty selection served. Not now. Ordered 2 toasties, 2 regular coffees and 1 hot chocolate. Price a staggering £25! The toasties alone cost £7.25 and salad garnish consisted of 1 piece of cucumber and 1 piece of tomato. The lady who served us was very pleasant, however, the lady who did the drinks looked extremely unhappy with her lot. I'm sad to say I won't be back in the cafe for food or drink. I think Mr Hampson needs to have a long hard look at his business and the way he treats his employees.

If you shut the gate at 16:30, that means you shut at 16:30. Either change your ‘OPEN’ hours to 16:30, or shut at 17:00 like it says you go on your google page 👍

Love it doesn't look like any animal abuse is taking place which is a surprise it is a very good place for birds only reason I k ocked a star of is because it is quite hard to find your way about but they was doing free veg for animals outside and not letting anything go to waste. Truly an amazing cartaker for animals

Great for quite cheap plants compared to other garden centres. Wasn't much on shelves this time. Pet store was nearly empty and the fish tanks needed a really good clean. Not the best way to sell your stock.

We visited the Garden Centre cafe 23/12/24 and purchased two large breakfasts a tea and coffee. The sausages were poor quality, the amount of food on the plate was more like a standard breakfast. The food was highly overpriced. It cost me £28.89 and was not worth the money. Looking at the menu a simple cheese and ham toastie with a side garnish, cost £7.20. I would have been happy to pay 15 pound for the two breakfasts and drinks for the quality we received. On a positive note the young person who served us was very pleasant and polite. However we will not be returning.

Amazing place, loads more than a normal garden centre! Hugh cafe and also has a desert area too! Wool shop, DIY shop, some foods, way too much to more to say! You need to visit to see for yourself!

Like going here. Quite a lot of goods and a nice café (can be slightly expensive). Main gripe is put a true price on things. Everything seems to be half price/ 50 percent off / reduced etc. Spend a lot of time calculating actual prices. Will still go again

Good choice of plants always busy place every time we there

Really not nice food. Only ordered beans on toast and poached egg on toast. Whatever spread you use on toast isn’t nice tasting. The eggs were cold and under cooked. The beans were tepid. The service wasn’t good, even though it wasn’t busy. We had 25 minutes wait.

Terrible . Massively overpriced, cold food . Didn’t have anything I asked for in the restaurant . No pork pie yet loads in the deli so why they didn’t use those ? Then didn’t have another Choice so went to the cafe instead. Forgot half the food, staff not friendly and couldn’t care less attitudes. Possibly worst garden centre cafe I’ve been to sadly . Why they don’t improve after all these bad reviews shows the owners don’t care sadly

Pretty low standard breakfast badly cooked and overpriced. £10.99 for a large breakfast that wasn't large at all. £2.90 for a tea took the bill to £13.89 so far from value for money. First and last visit for me,sorry..

Very tasty meal, a good size portion, and wasn't waiting long, the only small negative would be the gravy was a little watery.

Not a big fan. Decent place but rambling. It's hard to work out where things are sometimes.

Had a wander around with Mother-in-Law. It was my birthday - so she bought lunch!

Loved it. Great choice of plants and cafe fodder. Spacious eating area. Car park much safer too now with the added walkway.

Cafe requires more staff as people's orders were getting mixed up and queuing for a long time for drinks . Staff seemed under pressure and disheartened .

Good selection of plants, which can be average price to expensive. I managed to find some well priced Jasmine plants when they were either sold out or ridiculously expensive elsewhere. There is so much more than plants for sale, including homeware, cheap miscellaneous items, cards/banners, and seasonal shops, aswell as a restaurant, ice cream parlour, aquatics and pets.

Great garden centre. One downside is toilets outside building so not great in heavy rain and rather smelly toilets.

Lovely coffee shame about the charge of 60p for a drizzle of cream £3.70 for a coffee, I don’t think so most expensive coffee in Wakefield looks like a costa from now on

We were very disappointed with the quality of food I had a tiny piece of frozen fish lightly fried the frozen chips were tasteless my partner had a beef and onion sandwich and had to remove lots of fat off the meat overall it was very poor and very poor value, won’t be eating there again 🤨

Very good centre, not just a garden centre but a foodstore, section to buy animals etc and a cafe.

Staff friendly food good scandalous to have to pay for a tiny amount of cream 60p £3.60 for an Americano most expensive around Wakefield. Maybe we’ll try else where. Shame

Great selection of plants, trees, garden furniture and everything else for your outdoor space. When tired of shopping they have an excellent cafe with hot food available or just coffee and cake 🙂

We've been visiting Hampsons for more than twenty years now even though it is thirty miles away. Often we would visit two or three times a month buying plants, compost, ornaments, garden furniture, pet supplies, flowers bouquets, Christmas decorations, flowers bouquets and food from the deli. We have watched it change over the years but over the last 12 to 18 months it has changed for the worst. We travelled there as we could get everything we needed, and a lot we didn't need, for a good price. And, with it being at such a good price, we always finished up buying so much more than we set out for! Unfortunately if all seems to have gone downhill. Gone are the good bargains, the 50% off marked priced and bargain red tag plants. You can get red tags but the last lot we bought failed miserably once home. Plants are now the same price as anywhere else but not always the best looked after. The MiracleGro was actually £3 more than my local garden centre! Plus, there just in not the same choice as there was. The cafe, although not the poshest, used to be really good value and a proper plate full! That's gone too. Prices have gone up, quality and quantity have gone down. Car parking can be a nightmare at busy times. The layout is......??? Bizarre! Doors have been blocked off so you can't follow any sort of flow. Once you've gone through the checkouts you can't get back in but at this point you realise that you've missed a section of the shop!! Talking of the checkouts, on our last visit my husband queried the bill. After much tutting and rolling of eyes they told us to empty our trolley out to recheck it all (making us look like criminals) and yes, we had been OVERCHARGED by £12!!! No wonder they have signs up saying mistakes won't be rectified once you've left the shop!!! Really feel it's let itself down I'm afraid we won't be back in a hurry.

Good prices can buy and bag a few of these and a few of those ie seed potatoes and onion setts not left with alot you dont need.

Wonderful place, lovely to have watched it grow over the years. Family owned, lovely people. Love the wool shop, great range, great cafe, the best cream scones in the take home bakery.

A great garden centre, lots of plants, trees, furniture, in fact they sell all sorts. Deli, pound store, cafe, toilets. Large free car park, can get busy. They sell live animals - Fish, birds, rats etc

Decided to call in for the first time today and have a coffee in the ice cream cafe, we paid £7 for 2 coffees, my husband got a latte which I think was just milk as there didn't seem to be any coffee in it at all, however he may have got the better deal as after I tasted my flat white that I got and found it to be an extremely vile tasting coffee, it was also quite weak but the taste alone was enough to put us off and we left them both, we won't be returning and certainly don't recommend. The staff serving however were pleasant.

If I could give zero I would. Bad tempered staff waiting for food what was cold it's terrible. Avoid it's that bad. The breakfast is terrible with poor produce and bacon like rubber.

Been today was appallung cafe had nothing in stock that we required despite having a butcher and deli on site whole layout confusing with uneven floors disabled toilet up a steep ramp not easily negotiable with wheelchairs notuces everywhere do not do this do not do that only acceptable thing was coffee and ice cream staff lovely and friendly however

A very poor experience in the cafe today, we took our 94 Yr old dad out for lunch. There was a private function on so we understood there would be a wait for food. However tables were clearing and new customers were being served before us, with the same order as we had ordered. We waited an hr for our food, which we felt was unacceptable for a 94yr old.

Excellent place to go for your plants and garden ornaments

Food seems fresh and well cooked. Setting is nice. Poor hygiene lets this place down…. Glasses, cups and tea cups are genuinely filthy

My wife and I are regular visitors to Hampsons. They probably have the most reasonable prices for plants and other garden products in the Wakefield area. In addition, amongst other things, they have a great cafe and butchery, bakery and green grocery departments. My favourite is the ice cream parlour which also serves teas, coffees and homemade cakes and patisserie.

Plenty of plants to choose from and a good cafe.

I love to go in this place only to see Charly😀😀 but yes.. there is very lots of flowers for garden. Old style shop 😀 not like usual..

IKEA of garden centres. Seems big but not a lot of choice. Plants on high racks so hard to get. Very busy. Parking limited at busy times.
