The Old Scalby Mills in Scarborough

Enjoyed a great fish & chips meal here over the weekend. Also the "North Bay" real ale was exceptional. Prompt service and friendly staff, we'll be back!

We popped in here for lunch after we'd spent a couple of hours looking round the Scarborough Sea life Centre and The Old Scalby Mill is only 2 minutes walk away. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and we took a menu and sat down. I ordered at the bar. We had the smaller portion of fish and chips which was fine for us. It was pretty quick in coming and tasty It caters for all the family as there were a couple of families with youngsters in high chairs. We will certainly come again as it's pretty much right on the sea wall, and in better weather, you could have a lovely walk along the north bay on the sea defences.

We called here for lunch. We had looked at the menu online en route. We had the seafood sharing platter. I have to say despite reading poor reviews since we visited, our food was lovely. Felt comfortable and looked after by the team there. Being able to look out to sea was very relaxing. Had a beer and a lager and sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble. Both lovely 😋 We would go back and eat there again. Thank you

The beer was good but we had the worst cup of tea in a long time. Warm water and UHT milk is not good enough in this day and age.

Ordered 2 burgers & Scampi - Burgers looked like yesterdays warmed up, deep fried, burnt & full of grease (Photo speaks for itself along with the terrible reviews). I sent them back and a guy came out asking everyone else how their meals were, trying to embarrass us in to silence (it was like a scene from Fawlty Towers) - luckily for them none of them had the burger! When the burgers returned they came back almost the same as the 1st ones, at least the young waitress did apologise in embarrassment. The only reason this place is still open is most of their business comes from Sea World so they don't care what they serve as most are holiday makers they'll never see again - guaranteed if they ate here once! Don't ruin your day - Eat SOMEWHERE ELSE

This could be a great place but the food is not up to standard & the place is dirty. The only good point is the friendly staff and great location . I would not recommend this place to eat

Great location, a captive audience for people walking to the end of the promenade. Unfortunately some issues - had to wipe food off the table to sit down, a hair cooked into the batter of the scampi (told waiting staff and the scampi piece was taken away without apology or replacement). Hot chocolate left untouched as was like brown water. Coffee had lipstick remnants on the mug. Disappointing and was not busy at the time ☹️ On the positive side, bar staff were really friendly and welcoming and no complaints about the cold drinks.

Having called in for an early evening meal we were disappointed. My wife had fish and chips while I ordered a burger. Straight away there was a problem with my wife’s glass of wine which had lip stick on. I took it back and showed the bar person who looked at my wife and rolled her eyes . My wife saw this unpleasant gesture and wanted to leave straight away but we stayed having already paid for our meals. The food arrived after what seemed like for ever , her fish was in very heavy batter which wasn’t very appetising at all. What was worse is there was a hair on the edge of the plate. She was furious and ate half the meal reluctantly more to please me that anything else ,we both don’t like complaining. Even worse to come the ladies toilets were in a disgusting state with horrid stains on the door and general grubbiness. I didn’t enjoy my mediocre meal as we were now not in a good mood.Needles to say we won’t be returning .

We had been out all day and due to the location and elderly family this was the closest and we were so hungry. The food wasn’t good at all Mother in law got the Yorkshire pudding with beef we couldn’t tell if pork or beef it was that pale and dry the chips were all dried out and definately not fresh and the fish had the soggiest batter due to just wanting food we ate what we could and left defo not for us and wouldn’t return for food although for drink a nice place to sit outside in the sun.

Food was excellent. Highly recommend the steak baguette or scampi. We were a party of 8 and everyone enjoyed their meals. Staff were lovely and so welcoming. Pub is immaculate and so we'll decorated. Lots of seating outside and inside. Excellent sea views Dogs welcome and free wifi.

Been here countless times over the years and always make a point of walking to it when we visit Scarborough, but Friday was a bad example how an arrogant, cockey member of staff can ruin a good establishments reputation! His manner was so off putting and when my wife asked politely for our table to be cleaned, he replied he was busy and would do it when he got the chance!!! He never made an effort to do so and there was only 8 customers in at the time! HE WAS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. We will go back but hopefully someone takes this on board and gets rid before we return. My advice to him is get out of hospitality it's not for you!

Took my mum here for lunch as we’ve often walked past but hadn’t been in for years. The steak pie & chips are definitely recommended. Fast service, good food & amazing sea views.

Wonderful family meal - great value for money the gentleman (Jacob) who looked after us was very welcoming and friendly. Wonderful service Wonderful food great portion size and true to their word freshly cooked. Highly recommended.

My lovely friend took me here for lunch and it has changed a bit since I was last here many years ago! We had lunch and the menu was very extensive and it was difficult to choose but the steak pie, mash and peas were so good and talk about loads of steak 🥩 with not one piece of gristle or fat.. Brandon was very kind attentive and funny and made us feel very at home 🏡.

Pleasant walk along North Bay beach, past the Sea life Centre and found this very popular pub. Busy for a weekday lunchtime. Staff friendly and welcoming on arrival. Nice views of the sea from the main windows. Cosy with a nice atmosphere. Decent choice on the menu ranging in price from light bites to large meals. Decent prices and dog friendly. A good find at the end of our walk

This is definitely the place to go if you're looking for dog friendly, child friendly, wheelchair friendly. We visited for my son's birthday and the staff couldn't have been more attentive and lovely. The food was fantastic, atmosphere relaxed and all the staff were amazing. What a great place to eat. Thank you to everyone who made us all (10 of us) feel special.

We’re a family of three, a couple with a 7 month old baby and a dog so eating out for us can be chaotic… we’re also quite picky and like nice places… after looking at various places to eat we tried here and it was perfect. The pub is traditional and old but the pub grub was lovely Overal fab home cooked pub grub in a lovely setting by the sea at really fair prices! We will definitely visit again.

Visited for lunch after visiting the sea life centre. Food was ok - my wife had scampi and chips which she said was good. Chips really nice. I had the Yorkshire pudding with beef. I’m sure the Yorkshire pudding was a frozen one - was like an aunt Bessie’s one. Lovely area and views.

We’ve been here for family birthdays. It’s ideal as we can pre-book as generally there are between 20 & 24 people. We’ve also been as a couple and enjoyed everything we’ve had and the service has been pleasant. It does get busy at weekends and Bank Holidays so either book, be prepared to wait for a table or be disappointed?

Ordered 2 cokes but when we started drinking them they were flat. They poured us another but still flat, said he would go and change it but when he came back and poured another they were still flat. We ended up with 2 cans instead and being served by miserable staff. We then went and sat outside and the tables were filthy and looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a while! Will definitely not be going back

Very reasonably priced food and a gem of a find. Lovely, friendly staff, great views and a nice ambience about the place.

We arrived expecting to just have drinks but as the menu was appetising we decided to eat here aswell. I have severe eating problems at the moment so I'm restricted as to what I can eat & the staff were so accommodating with what I ordered to give me what i could eat from the dish & it cane to the table perfect. Thank You so much to all the staff & it made it well worth the walk to get to you - we will be back next time we are in Scarborough

We stopped for lunch before visiting the sea life centre and yes its food was better quality and value than was on offer at thr sea life centre but it was still average. Firstly they had no milk, yes No milk so black tea or coffee only. Milk I would have thought was a basic. My special chorizo and sundried tomato panini was dry and pland. The kids looked better

We came out of the Sealife looking for somewhere to eat and decided to try here and we were not disappointed. We had 4 hungry boys & sesting 6 of us wasn't a problem. Only 2 kids had a kids meal the rest of us had 4 adult meals so this including drinks each came in at just under £75. The value for money was great though as the protion sizes were huge and we were full for the rest of the day. Lots of people seemed to just be popping in for refreshments but the food was great quality. Staff very friendly would 100% return here.

I call in for a drink at least once each time I visit Scarborough, usually 2 or 3 times a year and I cannot think of a better spot.I sit outside and enjoy the views but I do think the refurbishment inside has been done very well. Staff are excellent and a pint is a fair price.

We booked a table and they had no recognition of it, food i had steak pie, the puff lid could of been cooked a tad more, my friend had the Yorkshire pudding, it was swimming in gravy, next time probably put gravy in a separate gravy boat, not everyone wants to taste just gravy

Brilliant little pub in Scarborough. We were served by Brandon. Brandon was friendly and very helpful. Went with disabled parents one in a wheel chair. You couldn't ask for a more helpful young man who guided us in and found us an ideal place to sit. Please give this man a pay rise. Great staff are hard to find so a big thank you to Brandon. And the food was lovely, served in a timely fashion, hot and tasty. Great little bar!!
