The Old Red House in Hambleton

This USED to be a great value place to eat and drink. BUT now it’s really downgraded. Don’t get me wrong if you enjoy the staffs screaming kids running around bumping into to you then its the place to go. The food used to be hot tasty and a realistic price but now its all frozen veg overpriced small cold portions and pricey beers. The toilets always stink. Still no lock on the ladies door. The outside area is always a drab mess which when nice weather has the same kids kicking footballs about. The staff always look miserable and non helpful and treat it as a family crèche and family gathering event rather than immerse themselves into what could be a rather profitable business. Give this place a swerve ….. don’t get me started on The Vale of York either 🫣

A charming pub and very dog friendly. The two ladies who ran everything the day we were in were beyond delightful. We both had egg salad sandwiches. Yummy! Hope to get back there....and next time a home made baked goods.

More of an eating house than pub

On the night I went most customers were locals under 40. Lively atmosphere. Food was ok and good value. I had the homemade chilli, I'd have liked it spicier or some hot sauce available, but it was definitely home made from good ingredients.

We stayed in our campervan for the night, we arrived late, I think they stopped serving food, but they very kindly made us some burger and chips, and oh my what a lovely burger, we were told they make there own burgers and it shows as it tasted so good. The staff and locals were friendly and kind. The price for staying in the carpark is £10 per night, they do live music some nights too. I will definitely be returning. Its right next to the railway station and near a road but its not to bad, for what we needed, it worked fine.

Very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. The staff were lovely. We liked it so much we visited again on our return journey.

this pub is a real hidden gem, i have been here a few times over the last couple of years. the food is exclent and the staff are really friendly this pub is truly a traditional country pub. if you visit Thirsk I highly recommend coing here

Pub literally across road from thirsk train station. Great stop off.

Rang to book a table, no reply. Left a message. Never got back to me. Decided to go anyway. Told them we had left a message just laughed. Ordered 4 Sunday lunches. Pork was awful, tough and gristly. Left most of it. Looked at other people’s plates and they had left most of theirs . Most of the veg was cold, gravy was watery, no apple sauce for the pork roast potatoes were cut into little squares and were very hard. Told the waitress she just said she would tell them. No sorry . Disgusted by their children running around behind the carvery counter. I couldn’t believe it when one of them came from behind there on a scooter and was riding it about between the people. There were some elderly people in the area and could have knocked them over. Definitely will not go there again

Great pub with a nice beer garden food looks nice but didn't have any close to station and Thirsk racetrack, the staff were absolutely brilliant

We were holidaying in Yorkshire and Thirsk was our last stop before going home to Birmingham. The food here was fantastic and well worth taking time to visit.

Not much to look at outside but a nice friendly pub. Allowed dogs in so we could wait for our train to York without having to wander about in the cold.

Had the “curry night” it was absolutely gorgeous, the selections were great, tried it all and it was fantastic. Well done “The Red House” will definitely attend for another curry night 10/10 Tina garry and the springer spaniel dog x

The food has declined with limited menu and very basic cooking. The food useto be good value and an easy choice but after settling on a hot dog, it was overfried and presentation was not appealing. Unfortunately, I will not be returning until they change their menu or chef.

We had an excellent finger buffet to celebrate our mum's life (Mrs Richmond).You made us all feel welcome. Beautiful food and lovely people. Many thanks from us all, will be calling again.

Popped in here for a quick drink after arriving by train, as it started to rain. It was quiet, infact we were the only ones in, but it was just after 12.00, Nice atmosphere, reasonable prices and friendly staff, the owner had just taken over the day before, but still had time to chat to us. He even phoned for a taxi for us into Thirsk. All the best in your new venture.

Visited Friday 14th January..... came to the Old Red House after the pub down the road couldn't accommodate the two of us for a meal at 19:10 as their kitchen shut at 19:00hrs. Greeted by the bar staff, asked about food, given menu's and drinks placed on the tab without hesitation. Menu, including specials a little limited and basic. Food arrived a short time later, hot and whilst not packed with flavour it was adequate. The pub wasn't that busy, but all our needs met, without any fuss. Decent prices mind. Wouldn't rush back but wouldn't not go back or put anyone off from visiting.

Visited twice whilst in Thirsk god pint and a really good Sunday lunch.

Nice relaxed local with sport. Spacious and friendly.

Called in after doing the weekly shop with the wife also child and dog friendly if required had 2 carverys and 2 pints unbelievable value for money and the meat was exceptional really friendly and welcoming choice of bar area or a dining area highly reccomended

Old fashioned pub, still with charm. Not part of a chain. Had two meals in pub, both were heavenly. Taste wonderful and piping hot. Sunday cavery tasted fantastic. Best we have ever had. Very reasonable prices. If this pub was near home would not cook a Sunday roadt ever again.

Stayed at the little red house for one night after moving from a bad b&b in darlington.l wish we had found this 1st.landlord was fantastic couldn't do enough for us.Showed me and wife to our room,and he even offered to call us a cab and recommend a reausterant for us as we just missed the carvery.Staff made us feel really welcome,even the regulars in the bar chatted to us.Rooms were well presented even had a fridge in the room,along with tv,chair, sofa,, en suite shower.Would book to stay here again without hesitation.

We have just spent four nights staying at the red House The accomodation was a lovely spacious room good standard throughout ..so near Thirsk a mile of pleasant walking...we also crossed the road to the station train to York in 20 min ...looking forward a future stay

The rooms are a bit tired but the staff are friendly and helpful. Bed was comfortable and the shower was ok. Walls are very thin and you can hear the people next door. There is a railway line at the back of the property but it doesn't really impact. Note there is no food on Monday and Tuesday evening and they don't do breakfast.

Sunday carvery was very nice on 5th Sept. Great staff. Fresh hot and well cooked. Only slight remarks that couple of veggie sausages or a offer of something veggie may have earned another star especially as cost of a plate of veg was the same price as the meat eaters.

The red house is actually GRAY but a lovely pub which serves lovely meals and not expensive

Really great place to stay. Rooms are large and absolutely spotless. Comfy beds fresh clean linen and fluffy towels. Added boness was a fridge, large TV with sky and tea making facilities. There is noise from the railway however the double glazing almost blocks it out. The bar staff were so welcoming and very accomadating and Sandra the lovely cleaning lady was a gem and lovely to talk to in the morning. Would highly recommend this place.

Fantastic food great service from all staff very friendly host all around Great experience

Everything in a basket. A plastic basket. A sea of beige in a beige basket. Gives the gall bladder a workout. With hindsight i should have asked for a plate. Big plus. I have never had such hot food as in this place! So hot you could not use your fingers as food in a basket requires. It stayed hot until the last bite!

Very accommodating, great staff who couldn't do enough to make sure that we enjoyed our stay. Would recommend you also try the burgers.

Good budget accommodation - rooms were great value for money. Friendly and relaxed staff. It is right next to a train line but I feel we were well insulated from the noise. Also woke up to see rabbits outside which was nice!

I felt the need to write what a great experience we had here after reading the two reviews below, my husband and I were staying with friends and were taken to the pub.we are from Leamington so not locals. We felt everything was spot on and we were made to feel very welcome. Anyone else noticed that the two bad reviewers live in locked down areas with huge rises in COVID ? Perhaps the pub is trying to look after its locals and protect them. I can only go off my experience but I found the pub really good and would highly recommend to anyone.

Good food, good beer, good atmosphere

Very weird experience! Never in my life have I know a pub to be “locals only”. What a misery of a landlord! I thought pub owners were meant to be happy, welcoming, sociable people! No idea how they make money... it was EMPTY.... on a Saturday? Oh well.

I would love to tell you about this pub. Its a big, beautiful old building. Unfortunately the 'locals only' sign on the door meant that i wasn't able to enter. To make matters worse. As i was taking a photo of the ridiculous sign, a man came out of the pub and started taking my photo - as if it is acceptable to not welcome people.The landlord must have a secret stash of money or customers where he can afford to pick and choose his clientele. But, judging by the fact that there was ABSOLUTELY NO ONE in the pub at what should be the busiest time of the week, he might want to rethink his strategy.

Visited here today for Sunday lunch & it was delicious, fabulous friendly staff who are doing a wonderful job despite the challenging times we are now facing, highly recommended to anyone looking for a good meal & lovely atmosphere 😀

We came here hoping for a friendly local establishment and good food but unfortunately the place was very disappointing.

We went for a Sunday Carvery here for the first time yesterday. It was awesome. It was one of the nicest carverys that we've had for years, so this is now our Sunday go-to spot. The cost was around average, decent quantity of food, & really tasty. Nice desserts too. A really nice meal & very happy to have found this place. It's worth ringing ahead & booking though, as they were quite busy.

Had Sunday lunch here today and it was lovely. Carvery style but you cannot serve yourself (Covid restrictions I presume) so staff plate it up with you pointing out what you want. Generous portions and reasonable price. Beef looked overcooked so went for pork which was lovely. Yorkshire’s were a bit chewy but all the veg was spot on, not too soggy like some carverys when it’s been sat for hours. Proper meat gravy.

Came here today to sample the New Year’s day carvery, we were very happy with the choice of meats & all the vegetables were fresh & tasty, great to see bowls of cranberry, horseradish sauce etc rather then sachets, all in all great value good & good service, we will return ASAP

We had choice of 2 dog friendly pubs. In the end our dogs were fast asleep so left them at the accomodation. Food was decently priced. Excellent choice of lager cider and wine. Service was fantastic. Waited on by 2 superb waitresses. The food was stunning. As much as the steak was lush the onion rings were the best we have ever had

Very good lunch, beautifully cooked and tender roasts - absolutely huge platefuls, a shame we couldn’t manage it all. Friendly staff.

First visit to the Old Red House whilst on a weekend break to Thirsk... visited for the Sunday car very and was not disappointed.Excellent food choice and one of the only carveries that lets you have as many Yorkshire puddings as you can handle!! Very friendly staff and good selection of drink choices.Will certainly return when back in Thirsk!!

Visited for the Carvery today and was very impressed. Meat (Johnson’s of Thirsk) was amazing, really tender. Choice of 3 meats, fresh veg, lovely roast potatoes and of course Yorkshire puds! Great value for money and a great idea to have a permanent Carvery and the Friday steak night. Definitely returning. Give it a try!

Room we stayed in was very cosy. I liked it alot.

Please don’t say you have WiFi if you don’t! I was told by two members of staff repeatedly that I needed to pay despite me showing a receipt clearly saying I had! Also “free toiletries” amounted to a bottle of shower gel. Don’t call yourself deluxe and four star when you aren’t.

My friend's and I popped in on our way to northallerton on Thursday 10th October, a lovely pub with friendly staff and good real ale 🙂

Was waiting for my train arrived early. So went in for a pint and something to eat. Girl behind bar was very friendly food was well presented and tasted great. Would recommend this to anyone. I think a return visit is in the cards. Very very clean and well present place.

Lovely staff, lovely rooms, lovely food. Very comfy room with plenty of space. Great spacious bathroom although would have been nicer if toilet was facing a more convenient direction so you don't have to squeeze your knees in front of the shower. Would have been 5* but no cooked breakfast just a couple of bland cereal boxes and some milk in a fridge in the room. So maybe bring your own. This said, I would definately stay here again.

Another unplanned visit during our few days around North Yorkshire. Passed this on the way into Thirsk and really pleased we stopped. Staff were very helpful and friendly, and both our meals were superb and good value.A great experience wand we would certainly go back, and recommend. Thank you.

I am disabled and the room we stayed in was meant to be disabled friendly what a joke. There were two steps to get to the room and the side gate which was flat there was less than a foot between the fence and the steps from the pub fire escape the beds were so close you would have had to be the size of a borrower i am not that size. There were no grab rails or still in the shower room which we were told was a wet room. My son voiced a couple of concerns with what we think is the owner and he basically in better words told my son he didn't care (he is in the wrong job) there was no WI-FI. No cooked breakfast as we didn't pre order it with the room we were not told we could ask later. The ONLY good thing was the cleaning lady she was great and tried to help she deserves a pay rise if only for the fact she works there. I will NEVER stay there again. It's just as well that Thirsk and our friends were worth seeing. I cried every night. I wish at such short notice we could have found some where else to stay I would have asked for our money back. I am not sure of the pictures they have but I took some of my own and have showed family and friends they were appalled by what they saw. If they just spent some money on the room it would be ok. I don't know what else to say apart from don't tell people it is disabled friendly when it is clearly not.

I booked room number one for friends visiting. One of the guests is disabled. This room was sold as a disabled room with proper wet room. On arrival it became apparent that they could not book breakfast as it had not been prebooked. At no point were we told that we needed to book breakfast when we booked the room and that we couldn't book it later. Next there were two steps to get to the 'Disabled' room. Inside there were strips of loose carpet which were frayed and indistinguishable from the carpet for visually impaired people. Next the single bed and double bed are so close together you wouldn't be able to get to the bathroom if wheelchair bound. Luckily my friend could stand. Next the bathroom. The toilet is very low. Im the wetroom there is no stool or chair and nohand rails rendering it largely useless. No shelf to put shampoo etc on at a height you could access it. Totally hopeless and definitely shouldn't be sold as a room suitable for a disabled person. It caused my visitors a lot of stress. I could never recommend this place. A disgrace.

We asked if they catered for disabled and were told yes. The bathroom door had no lock and no handle on the inside and was coming away from the frame. There is no WI-FI which when my son asked another member of staff they said the pub has it but didn't think it would reach the room we were less than a 100 yards from the pub. Thank god Thirsk is great. I cried every night in the room. We will NEVER stay there again. Shame it could be great as it is straight across from the train station.

Tried the curry, rice and chips ...portions where large,everything was homemade, the curry was delicious and the chips where to die for ..2 empty plates and satisfied customers ..cant wait to try other dishes.

Absolutely fantastic service. We have an autistic son and they went out of there way to make him happy. Even made him a special pasta meal from scratch. Brilliant staff!!
