Golden Lion in Hambleton

The golden lion Sunday lunch use to be the best in town but since they started putting vegan butter on everything including the stuffing!! Sorry but not everyone likes the taste of butter. Rest of the pub is brilliant

Really nice pub. The landlord was very friendly and the place had a great atmosphere.

The Golden Lion held our Wedding event from the ceremony to the evening disco. What a fantastic place, what fabulous staff, and the management Scarlett and Allanda were just the best. Cannot praise them enough for making our day so special. We will continue going there regularly for lunch when we visit Northallerton. Ann and Peter 💖

We turned up on a Friday night and there was only one person serving. I didn't expect food to be available but she worked her magic and came up with a pretty decent hot beef sandwich whilst serving the entire pub! Hats off for customer service.

Family birthday so enjoyed a family Sunday Lunch out, without the worry of having to cook or washing up myself. Six of us were dining and we chose 3 different meals so we were spoilt as that's a " no go" at home. Food was lovely. Atmosphere was quiet but understandable as we are not that far away from Xmas now & more people will start going out for their Christmas meals and work do's. Great for us as it meant the pool table was available to use. Lovely quaint surroundings. Service was excellent as Dougie was very attentive, the serving staff were polite and couteous. If you get the chance to pop I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Sunday lunch was excellent. A great choice of meat and vegetables and we were well looked after.

First time here but it won't the last.Fantastic food good service and very caring staff especially Duncan and his grandson. Couldn't fault anything.

An amazing welcome we received today by our hosts Doug and Pearl. who were both attentive and friendly. All the food was cooked to perfection and very generous food portions. If you are looking for traditional home cooked food and friendly service I can highly recommend Special thanks for making our birthday celebrations of 10 guests a special and memorable day nothing was too much trouble for you

Popped in here for lunch yesterday, very disappointed with my liver which was barely cooked and bloody, left it all and would have left it at that, but for the stroppy waitress who insisted that it should be like that. Shocking attitude will not be returning or recommending and have had an upset stomach ever since.

Good food, fair price, nice atmosphere, music not too loud so you can listen and talk.

A nice, homely local pub. Friendly staff. The food was cheap, £9 for a drink and a meal, but was very good. They serve food after 5pm There is a minimum card purchase of £5 though so be careful if you don't carry cash like me.

Big Thankyou to Doug and his lovely Pub. Was staying locally at friends and after watching the match in town ,took my daughter home while the rest stayed out for a few. Got back to there place and we didn't have a key I had no charge left on my phone and it was getting dark . I walked into the pub and was greeted by Doug I explained my situation and he went way out of his way to help me . He lent me his phone and managed to get hold of the rest of the gang with the house key. In the meantime had a lovely pint in there. Just want to say thanks so much for looking after me and my 9 year old daughter . Our friends live just around the corner so next time we are up will definitely be coming in for a pint and some grub as the whole place looked so welcoming. Thanks again for helping this stranger in need. Xxc

Popped in last night for a few beers last night with a mate. Great pub. Really comfortable, spotlessly clean. A little dated in terms of décor but by no means shabby. Quite charming in fact and very comfortable. Reassuring to see a proper traditional landlord and landlady. They clearly take pride in their pub and have a genuine care for their customers. The evening was a steady one with a variety of folk. Great buzz of conversation not punctuated by mindless banging music or garish drinks advertising plastered all over the spot. This is how pubs used to be. A real gem. Its difficult beyond belief for publicans at the moment so i wish the Golden Lion Romanby every success and look forward to popping in again soon. Well done and keep up the great work.

Lovely pub in a picturesque setting in Romanby. Great range of beers, wines & spirits, very comfortable seating areas, friendly staff. Love it.

We have been yo this hotel a few times.. but never overnight. We just love the ambiance of the hotel. There is a deep well in the middle of the lounge! It is safe as it's covered with toughened glass - it makes a good talking point... The hotel is right in the centre of Northallerton, so you haven't got far to walk to carry on with your shopping!

Big open pub. Sadly i missed cooked lunch but friendly hosts found sandwiches for me.

Good drink and good atmosphere!

We ate here last night for my sisters birthday, there was about 15 people in our party and we had pre ordered. The portion sizes were very generous and tasty. Everyone really enjoyed the food. The kitchen even prepared a dish off the menu as i am vegetarian and the vegi dishes contained mushrooms which I am allergic too. A really great evening with good food and family.

Light lunch of tomato and red pepper soup which my husband said was very nice - certainly nice and hot. I had a prawn sandwich which was was ok Service prompt- surroundings comfortable with a mixture of low leather sofas and dining chairs

Popped in for a quick drink. Service was quick and we sat outside in the sunny garden area. Seemed popular with locals. Would definitely return.

Let’s be honest - eating out in Northallerton is a strange experience. There’s no real “buzz” in the centre of the town, and not a huge amount to choose between the various pubs along the main street. The Golden Lion serves up solid fare from a very, very extensive menu. The setting is nice, with the old well-shaft of particular interest. Rooms at the hotel are mixed - some very nice, some quite noisy (and with limited WiFi).

Popped to Northallerton. Golden Lion had best menu choice so in we went. Firstly went into small bar at front with very low tables. Not suitable for lunch eating so asked member of staff where lunches were served and he said the bar was the only place. We went to leave and were directed by another member of staff to the lsrge dining areas situated at the rear of the hotel. Good choice on menu. Orders taken at bar. Decided to have starter and pudding. Pate lovely and huge bowl home made leek and potato soup with warm bread. Most beautifully moist large portion of sticky toffee pudding

Has had a revamp to the front lounge since I last visited. Very nice and an improvement in terms of efficiency of service, though everything remains very traditional. Had some wonderful liver- lightly cooked as I requested and served with real mashed potatoes. Service remains pleasant. The loo is at the back but on the ground floor.

Just had Sunday lunch, wonderful as usual. Various choices, would recommend!

We go to the pub quiz once a fortnight on a friday evening. For £2.00 which includes a supper its fantastic value we all have a good laugh win or lose come down and make it even more fun.

Quiz night, lovely atmosphere, good service

It was a bit of a time travel in the Golden Lion,which suited my 92 year old mother in law.Strong pattern carpets and dido rails are not my thing.The food is ok but it took a while to get to us.

We enjoyed a lovely Sunday Carvery at this restaurant. I had Lamb & beef. Beef was a little chewy, but tasty, lamb was great, there was also turkey on offer. A great selection of vegetables, all fresh & very tasty. Large Yorkshies & a choice of gravies, I went for thick onion, which was exceptional. Followed carvery with a sweet, pear & almond tart with custard, very nice.

Great new addition to an already traditional busy high street hotel, restaurant and bar. Cocktails great, good variety, well priced however as all freshly prepared service can be a touch slow. Would love to see the lounge modernised to reflect the cocktail bar theme, maybe soon once they have proven how popular it is - try the Pornstar Martini 🍹💕

Era día de mercado en Northallerton y buscando un lugar para sentarse, fuimos al hotel Golden Lion para una taza de té. Era muy cómodo, muy acogedor y tuvimos una muy agradable taza de té y un bocadillo, a precios muy razonables. mira el menú, parece que hay mucha variedad y volveremos a visitar otra vez, cuando esté en la ciudad.

We visited this pub on a Sunday as it is carvery day. Three types of meat, pork, beef, Turkey etc plus Yorkshire puds, stuffing and around 4 veg and various potatoes as well as sauces and gravies. All for under £10 each for one course. Very good service. Olde worlde charm. Car park at rear. Recommended.

Its like walking back into the 80s but don't let that put you off. The meal we had was lovely. The place was full with people of a certain age but I understand why they love it. Nothing too fancy but once again the food was freshly cooked and tasted great.

I like the Golden Lion and have eaten there many times over the last decade: you can eat in the restaurant, the bar or the lounge, and the food is, perhaps, well described as 'good Yorkshire'. The menu includes sandwiches and classic pub-grub such as gammon and pineapple, but there's also a really great fish pie (last sampled three days ago) and liver with onions. I like my liver very pink inside, and that's how I get it, so long as I make my preference clear. The loos are fine, if not luxurious, and there's a small outside sitting area. The service has been a little slow in the past, but last Saturday is was as close to perfect as service can get. The staff cope well with special dietary needs (I'm gluten intolerant). If you're in a hurry and the place is full, try ordering and paying at the hotel reception desk.

An old fashioned Coaching Inn, comfortable, friendly and helpful staff, Good food, the only downside be careful there are not any footbal internationals playing in the evenings, the Chef tends to forget orders.

Hi, We like to go here for lunch, the food is good quality, freshly cooked and the service generally good. Mid price range but can be a little slow when busy.

Food was ok but not amazing, didn't really do extras (garlic bread) which would go with lasagne etc. Would go again as not too pricey, but wouldn't rush back either.......nice environment and has a waitress service if preferred.....

A reasonable place to grab a pub meal. Generally good value and staff pleasant. Could do with modernising but nice and roomy through in the bar area.

Excellent service, reasonable prices, very good quality pub food. very pleasant bar. I have eaten a variety of things there, and have stayed a number of times. I have not had any cause for complaint.

Great menu terrific offers. Good fresh wholesome food beautifully cooked and presented. Had the three course offer, brilliant. Would have paid at least double elsewhere for such a lovely meal. Lunch menu was very extensive. Evening menu also very good. Get yourselves there.

When in Northallerton, we usually eat at the Golden Lion. It is a bit like a relic from a bygone age but to be able to sit at a nicely dressed table with good linen and eat cumberland sausage and mash for just over a fiver then what's not to like?

We visit here for a meal every time we pass through Northallerton and have found the place to be consistent, tasty and well staffed at all times. The food is traditional hotel/pub food but lifted a level into quality English cooking. The service is always excellent, the wait time is good between order and service and there is always more than enough to eat, you never leave the table hungry. We have tried both the a la carte menu and the buffet at various times and have had consistently good food. The setting is traditional English, up-market, town centre hotel/restaurant/pub, with low ceilings and a slightly old world atmosphere, great for an evening out with friends or a nice meal with your partner. The only caveat is that it is wise to book at weekends and busy holidays.

A perfect afternoon tea at The Golden Lion in Romanby, overlooking The Green. A warm welcome from the landlord and his wife (the chef), we had a drink in the bar first and then went through to the dining room where the table was laid beautifully with white table cloths and traditional cake stands (one per person), laden with smoked salmon and cucumber, ham, roast beef and egg mayonnaise sandwiches, 4 different cakes and a giant scone with whipped cream, butter and jam. Limitless cups of tea and good company - what a way to spend the afternoon, and all for £7.25 per person. Fantastic.

Nothing better than a good afternoon tea. The Golden Lion in Romanby is your typical traditional, local pub.They have just introduced to their menu afternoon tea or a cream tea, Tuesdays to Fridays from 3pm to 6pm. My husband took myself and my nine year old as a treat. Landlady came out with a lovely white table cloth which set the mood. Service was very quick, lovely selection of sandwiches, cakes and scone with cream and jam and a good teapot of tea, topped up by the landlord. We thoroughly enjoyed it and at £7.25 for one or £13.50 for two, it was really good value for money. Will definitely be visiting again. Cream teas also available at £4.75.
