We’ve been planning on going for a while now after watching the reviews, The place is lovely along with the staff who were all really pleasant. The menu is really nice and although not over priced is above the ordinary in quality and choice. Portions are generous too.I would have given five stars, but as is the same for many establishments I needed to ask for more drinks rather than being asked despite our glasses being empty. In an above average establishment I would expect it, and this is definitely above average.

My husband and I stayed overnight at this absolutely beautiful Inn, room 4. We had dinner and cocktails on the evening of our stay and breakfast the next morning. Our room was stunning, extremely clean and decorated to a very high standard. The whole place was spotless. I can't rave enough about our evening meal, it was honestly amazing. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The French martinis were the best I've ever had. Can't wait to go back. Thanks for having us!! Layla & Dylan Clarke

We have stayed twice at the old Mill. The first time in September 23 and recently in January 24. We returned with friends having had such a fantastic time the first time round. This is a gem of a place. Only 25 minutes drive from Keswick. The bar area is cosy and welcoming with a lovely log fire. The staff are warm and engaging and the rooms beautifully appointed and exceptionally clean. Huge comfortable beds with high-quality duvets, pillows and bedding. The food and wine in the restaurant was exceptional. Overall outstanding value for money. we have recommended this place to family and friends and will definitely be back.

Thank you so much to the restaurant staff for making our stay so great - we would highly recommend to friends and others!

The meal was small for the price there was 5 adults four had steak pie which came with a piece of pie the size of a mobile phone a small portion of mashed potato and some undercooked broccoli and cabbage my pie had a lump of fat which filled half of my pie, when l pointed this out l was told the chef would be informed, the fifth member had macaroni cheese with garlic bread dry and unappetising, we all had sweets overpriced at nearly £8 each l was unlucky l had sticky toffee pudding which had a large stone from a date in it, nearly broke my tooth, my wife asked me not to complain and Frankly after the response about my pie it really wasn't worth it, the bill with two lime and sodas and a coke and two pints £115.poor value for money.

Fantastic food and service when we visited for Sunday lunch. One little improvement I would implement if I could…..mains were brought out and there was a little wait until veggies were brought out by same server…..my son started tucking into his lamb before the veggies came out - didn’t want his food to go cold. Perhaps two servers could come out simultaneously or consider use of trays so everything comes out together? This is certainly not a complaint as we all thoroughly enjoyed our food - it was delicious….and all the staff were lovely. We’ll be back for a bar meal soon - the bar & restaurant have been fully refurbished & the staff were immaculately turned out in their uniforms.

Do NOT pay attention to any reviews older than 2023. The Old Mill Inn has been completely renovated and is under new ownership and management, only opening in summer 2023. The restaurant team are young, exciting and fresh with a real passion that translates to delicious dishes. Beautiful food and imaginative menus. Wine pairings are superb and the ambience is relaxed, cheerful and smart-casual. The front of house staff are, without exception, absolutely charming. I have dined in Michelin starred restaurants and the best gastro pubs inns all over Cumbria and this is THE one to watch. It knocks the spots off all other local Inns and produces the best food in the area. Book before there's a three month waiting list when the best kept secret in western Cumbria gets out.

Well you get what you pay for and for £40 on a bank holiday weekend night it’s worth every penny. Room was clean and basic with kettle and coffee, small tv but ok not to keen sharing a bathroom but hay ho... just been down for breakfast not a sole around other people must have been because tables have not been cleaned. Took a while to work out the procedure but found everything I need in cupboards end of the room where there was a water heater for tea and coffee. There is one niggle for me very noisy with front door banging every 5 mins people going outside for a smoke, bang bang bang. I must have been above the bar! All the noise just hummed through the floor. After a 4 hr drive all I wanted was a hr kip!!! No chance. However I can’t complain for £40?

Myself, my partner and our 7 month old have just got back from a weekend stay here. It was awful, there was zero hospitality- no welcome what so ever, no information about our stay. The ' contintenial self serve breakfast ' was absolutely disgraceful! There was a bowl of cling film wrapped brioche ( the type I buy my kids for packed lunch) and cling film wrapped croissants and they were both as solid as rocks. A few oranges, no boiling water available for hot drinks oh and 2x packs of single weetabix. That was it, and to top it off - not a person in sight to ask for things. Appalling! Our room upon first look was Ok, nice big bed, with a further 2 single beds. That's the only good thing I can say. There was a bedside lamp with no bulb?! A random shelf hidden under the bed. And a very loose shelf that is about to fall off the wall at the other side of the bed. The shower was horrific, you either have it boiling hot or freezing cold. The shower screen was glue to the bath which was covered in mould and The bathroom window sill was also covered in mould. The only people we saw was the barman who was serving when we arrived and then a bar lady serving when we went out on the second night. That was it. No hello's, no 'is everything ok' no 'Thank you and goodbye' It was as if we had just been given a key to a room and that was it. This place needs yo seriously consider how it treats they're guests, What they offer they're guests, and how comfortable they're guests feel staying at they're so called b&b.

I would just like to say that the old mill as the name says old and it was!!!!! Very dated and not very clean, there where dead flies in the light fitting. The room was very cold, the double bed was so uncomfortable and the room was very basic. The bathroom had a blue dated bath which had lines on it from where they had poured bleach some time ago. It was dirty and very disappointing. We should have stayed two nights but couldn't stand the thought of another night there. The evening meal was nice and hot though the steak pie had been microwaved and the pasty was hard. This was supposed to be a relaxing trip but it certainly wasn't. The whole place needs modernising.

My husband and I have just returned home after spending 4 nights at The Old Mill. This was our second visit and there will most definitely be a third. On our first visit admittedly we found our room and ensuite very small but because the beds were clean and the food good we decided to give it another go - this time we asked for a bigger room - we were given a family room with bathroom. The room was clean, bedlinen spotless and the food was second to none - the breakfast was cooked fresh to order and there was a good choice ; We had two evening meals during our stay when friends joined us and again the food was excellent and freshly cooked. Tom, the Manager appears quite shy but he is doing a great job in difficult times and both he and his staff are very welcoming and will always find time for a chat but were never intrusive. This is an OLD INN - don't expect the Ritz, its not what you booked.

The room I stayed in was appalling! Had asked for a double and got a twin bedded room. There was a dreadful smell emanating from the ensuite which nobody except Maria took seriously. The smell, a drain smell, was absolutely nauseating and made the whole room smell. Neither Tom nor Andrea said they could smell anything, but when I went out they went into the room and put bloo loo in the toilet and replaced an air freshener in the room itself!! Every time you run a tap or flush the loo there is a loud grinding noise, which is some sort of pump. The room was small and because of the low ceiling very oppressive, not something they could improve on admittedly. There were cobwebs hanging from the beams. The radiator in the room was on full blast and couldn't be turned off. Result staying in a sauna that brought on an asthma attack and my support dog couldn't stop panting heavily. In the end they had to turn off the heating in the entire place, I am sure other guests in other parts of the building must have been cold, I felt sorry for other guests. The place was also very dingy in general and looked as though a good clean, a lick of paint and some brighter lighting wouldn't have gone amiss! I had a dreadful night, the bedding smelt and at 04.00 the smells from the bathroom became overpowering! The all invading smell is still on my clothes 2 days later!Breakfast was appalling requested bacon and scrambled egg which was served in a small cereal bowl! The eggs were overlooked , full of black pepper and there was nearly an inch of brown water in the bottom of the bowl! Disgusting! I told Tom it was inedible and he took it away, I thought he would remake it but nothing appeared. So no breakfast and no apology!Service recovery does not feature high on the list and you feel they do not take anything you say seriously. Maria who is a staff member was the only one who did. I should have stayed 2 nights but checked out after 1, even though I had nowhere else to go other than 3 hour journey home after a funeral! If they want to stay in business and do well then Tom needs to buck his ideas up!

All in all our experience was disappointing. Although my partner specifically asked if the steak and ale pie was actually home-made and receiving an affirmative answer, what they didn't tell her was that it was microwaved when ordered. (You can tell) It was tray baked and cut into portions, hers was dry round the edges and the pastry was crumbly. My cumberland sausage was an insipid colour and the peas were not tasty at all.I asked them why they keep the red wine on top of the coffee machine as mine was like luke-warm tea when served. Apparently it is to make sure it's at room temperature!!! I said to my partner during the meal that they must be very confident in the food or they didn't care if it was acceptable or not as nobody enquired if we were happy. We will not go there again.

Rather disappointing as we asked if the food was cooked fresh and not bought in and thus assured made our choices. My partners Cumberland Sausage was ok and cooked to order but my albeit large square serving of steak pie was a disappointment. When it came out it appeared to be freshly oven cooked but as it cooled on the plate it developed the tell tale hard inedible edges of an over microwaved item. Initally this was hidden in a slathering of packet gravy. The carrots went from looking freshly boiled to having the shrunked shrivelled pitmarks indicative of over reheating in a microwave.Did I say anything to them? No, we had driven with a caravan hitched on for nearly 7 hours and I just could not be bothered. This pub is one of many that let down their profession.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

If you are looking for a fine dining experience I would not advise you to go to the Old Mill Inn at Dearham in Cumbria. In early August 2012 my wife and I, on a visit to Maryport, decided to go there for dinner as, over the years on several previous occasions, we had had delicious meals. This was especially important as we have found it difficult to find restaurants or pubs serving good food in Cumbria in the past. The evening we were there was a ‘steak night’, so I opted for a steak. My wife liked the sound of the ‘chargrilled chicken salad’ described on the menu as:“Chargrilled Chicken Salad - Made only using the finest local chicken, lightly seasoned with a range of different spices and chargrilled, finally tossed through fresh crisp salad.”She was served a dry slab of fried chicken alongside a salad composed of lettuce, tomato, onion, a pile of grated cheese, hard boiled egg and coleslaw, all occupying their own bit of plate. The chicken was difficult to cut with the knife provided. She was hungry so managed to eat some of it by tearing bits off the main piece. There was no evidence of the ‘range of different spices’, or any tossing through a ‘fresh crisp salad’ as the entire meal was tasteless. When asked by the waiter, she explained that she hadn’t enjoyed the meal and gave him the reason. He shrugged, albeit in an apologetic way, but didn’t offer to pass the comments on to the owner, chef, or anyone else. He did say that the hotel had been taken over a few months ago by new owners, although the chef remained the same. As it was steak night, I ordered the steak. Described as, “8oz of the finest Steak, cooked to your preference, accompanied with freshly cooked Tomatoes, Mushrooms, homemade beer battered Onion Rings and a choice of potatoes. Can also be served as ‘Surf & Turf’ or with one of our delicious homemade sauces for £1.00 extra, choose from: Peppercorn, Diane or Creamy Garlic”.I was unable, as in so many other places, to order an alcohol free lager. Water it was. The medium steak was chewy and only had a smear of the promised Diane sauce. Three absurdly well-cooked onions rings were complemented by a lonely mushroom and a monstrous pile of insipid chips. I was not actually given a choice of potatoes. If that was the ‘finest steak’ I would hesitate to eat the lesser quality variety. The use of superlatives describing items on the menu does not make up for the reality of the culinary experience. Although we commented at the time about the quality of the meal, no-one in authority either apologised or even commented. The man behind the bar, who I presumed to be the manager, took payment without comment, although he did appear to have difficulty in meeting my eye. I rather got the impression they were glad to be shot of us, but not half as glad as we were to leave. I was very disappointed and we will not be visiting (or recommending) the Old Mill again. I think the new owners need to improve the quality of the food significantly. The next night rather than risk a meal out we bought sandwiches from the garage in Maryport – very good they were too.

Walked from Keswick centre to Nichol End Marina. A lovely walk but was glad when I arrived at the marina cafe. Roger (jolly Roger) welcomed me in and was so helpful and friendly. It was quiet as the season is coming to an end. I had an oat milk coffee and a raisin sticky toffee scone. It was so big! Put half in a bag to take home. Plenty of choice of scones all fresh and looking delicious. Prices were so reasonable. Roger then gave me a ride in his boat across Derwent Water. He’s such a nice man. It made my day to find a gem of a place. Would def recommend if in the area. Will return and try out the boating/canoeing etc next year.

The best dog friendly cafe in the lakes. Gorgeous food and the warmest welcome. This is our go to place when walking in the north lakes. All of the food always hits the spot but the cakes are just gorgeous!
