The Old Kings Head in South Norfolk

Visited the Old King's Head today after a gap of about 18 months. Apart from the Covid/safety precautions, felt very much like before and the menu looked much the same. Both had lovely pizzas followed by vanilla panacotta. No complaints here! Note: in current circumstances booking is pretty much essential.

Me and my family enjoyed a fantastic dinner on May 18th, the first night diners could eat inside. The fire was roaring, candles were lit, food was generous and delicious. Teenagers would have been quite happy with three courses of the fantastic dough sticks. Tasty, quality food in a beautiful, atmospheric setting. Can't wait to return.

Whilst staying nearby Brockdish, we were pleased that the Old Kings Head was one of the few pubs in the area to open for drinks and food in the garden. [This was during the easing of restrictions, where pubs could serve outdoors only]. I was really grateful for the way in which organised things, taking real care for the safety of their customers. Each customer was asked to ring a bell at a gate, sanitise hands and use the NHS app or give phone details. They were then escorted to a table. Tables were socially distanced. All staff wore masks over mouth and nose. There was an one way system for entry and exit. We felt really safe.The garden in very pleasant, with a sort of coastal theme. The Adams and guest beers were great as was the G and T. We took home a couple of pizzas [it was rather cold to hang around too long], which were fine.The best thing about this pub is it's staff. Very courteous and friendly.I would love to go back in warmer weather.

We love this pub. Before lockdown it was deservedly packed with lovely people, serving excellent home cooked pasta and pizza, fresh baked bread, great gin menu and ales. Friendly atmosphere and effortless style.Now the take away menu is great, and the curries can challenge restaurants we have been to recently at a great price with whole cardamoms and chillies, fresh coriander and great customer service with a smile. We wish you well in these difficult times and thank you for providing such a great village service.

Last week I had pizza and then on Saturday Curry for takeaway from this pub. For me it was one of the best take aways. Being Indian I can say the it was pure authentic.

Great restaurant for all the family. Quality pizza that adults and kids will enjoy. Stylish restaurant, only gripe was that it was very dark, and attentive staff.

Had lunch there today with a friend,loved the interior of this pub, it has kept in character with the age of the building,enormous fire in the toasty warm lounge.Staff were friendly and helpful,menu was lovely,Pizza and pasta dishes plus a few alternatives,freshly cooked so a little wait but was aware of that so no issue lovely desserts,I was to full but my friend had a Brownie with choc ice which she said was fabulous as were our Pizzas and garlic bread.Really impressed with the whole place and will certainly be going again..

The Old Kings Head at Brockdish has won Norfolk pub of the year for several years now. Well deserved. The menu is limited but all pizzas and pasta home made and quite delicious. And a range of nice puds too. Agaibn heaving with young people and buzzing.

We arrived with our dog Charlie who is a well behaved Jack Russell and who sat at the table with us ! Staff were all wonderfully polite and helpful, food delicious, great easy going atmosphere, I love it here !

Staff very nice and good selection on menu mainly Italian influenced. Dough Sticks better than dough balls well worth a try and pizzas are good. All freshly made so if in a hurry ask what is the quickest option as it takes time to get perfection.

Fabulous classic old English pub tucked away in a small, country village. Top notch ambience with a delightful oak beamed interior and a large log fire burning in the hearth.Service was very good and the pizzas and pasta were excellent. Nice selection of ale and gins, too.Will definitely be going back soon. Such a pleasant environment in which to spend a couple of hours on a miserable November Sunday lunch time.

Pizza wonderful, but the pasta dishes are really good too. Best of all - coffee ice cream, just perfect. How lucky we are to have such a classy local.

We love coming here, the menu may be limited but everything on it is good. You have to order from the bar which is a pain because you could be in for a long wait if the person in front of you is ordering gin but the food is always delicious.

We go to this pub no more than a few times a year. This is partly because the menu is limited to just pizza and pasta but also because we have found it to be rather understaffed. We have always visited at the weekends which is a busy time and previously have waited an extremely long time for our orders. The staff are good but clearly under pressure. Customers are waiting an age to get served at the bar and on our recent visit we waited nearly half an hour to get our first drinks at the table even after reminding our waitress. Our food then arrived minutes later so no relaxing glass of wine before eating. The food quality was good although I had pasta which I think was rather pricey as the portion was considerably smaller than on previous visits. The pus is a lovely setting but more staff would make a big difference.

Enjoyed a Saturday evening pizza, bread and dips foe starters was fairly standard, however the pizza more than made up for this. Good variety and cooked to perfection. Recommend

Go to this Pub a few times a year staff always helpful but always seem under staffed on busy nights and times early evening can wait ages for drinks to be served .

It sounded like this was a pub with pretensions to Italian food but its actually a really good restaurant in a pub building - fantastic food (interestingly diverse pizza, and by far the best I've had out of Italy), excellent atmosphere. Really remarkably good - well worth going out of your way to eat here.

My husband and I found this online when looking for a dog friendly lunch. Dogs are allowed before 6 pm. The food was incredible. Will definitely visit again

As a large family we don't get much time to get together but when we do we like to go out for a nice meal .We were all free so I booked a table at the kings head for 9 of us at 7.30 pm.on arrival the pub has a great atmosphere very olde world traditional feel , all got a drink so many gins to choose from .was shown to a huge round table .After decisions on what we were having we had shared plate of amazing olive tappanard with crisp breads yum.The pubs menu was traditional italian pizza , pasta we had pancheta pizza also amazing with chocolate brownie for pudfing.The whole ambiance of the evening was lovely catching up on family chats eating , drinking a really lovely .The whole pubs atmosphere was truly heart warming place to be .that's why we keep coming back.

Been visiting regularly for 5 years and glad to say food is consistently good. We had questioned the service a year back but was great this time round. There is a young girl with dark hair and if she is there the experience is so much better.

If like me you like pizza and all things Italian you will love this place

The pasta and pizza menu in this pub is absolutely incredible. Simple,fresh ingredients cooked to perfection. Totally amazing!

We had a group lunch here - lovely round table too which made it easier to chat. Very descriptive menu offering great selection of pizzas, salads and pasta. Everyone enjoyed their lunch choice. Very friendly too. Particularly recommend the extensively stocked bar and, for a change, a great selection of non alcoholic drinks.

When I asked which of their wines were vegetarian, I was told by a barmaid in a rather rude tone that the only way she would know would be to read the back of every bottle.

Ok, since my last published review in September last year (I think), we have eaten here about five times and it has been consistently brilliant, hence I felt the need to add this review.

I had no idea about this place until randomly going in. What a great bar and restaurant. If you like gin it's perfect, local beer 🍻 spot on and the food is excellent. I have been 3 times now and will go again.

Had a lunch here after we ended our 5 days walk along the Angles Way at this pub. Good choice of real ales and for food they specialise in pizza, which was absolutely delicious. They seem to have a lot of local trade but perhaps not much passing. The landlady and the locals seemed very friendly. Would happily seek this place out if in the area.

After being told about this place by a couple in the pub one day, found time to visit. They wernt wrong! Beautiful pub with a 'few' gin options and other real ales. Lovely laid out pub with great food. I won't lie, you need to try the pizzas! Just delicious and very reasonably priced. Service was very good too. That's the type of place you spend all day in! Look forward to visiting again! Great work.

So went here on Wednesday during our week of work in Norfolk. To be honest, I didn't want to go due to it being a pub. However, it was more set out to be a restaurant with a bar rather than a pub which was great for me.

We had dinner here last night for a special occasion.

Love thjs place. Well run, great food and atomsphere plus good friendly service. Annabel was our fantatic waitress. Very polite and knew the menu very well. Advisable to book, proper food with great drinks list.

I've been meaning to go here for a while as I'd heard good things and a friend of mine works here. Really impressed with the front of house staff, I like to think in a half decent cook and if I'd made the tomato sauce for the pizza I had I'd want a small medal! If you like good service, food, and delicious beer the Kings Head will not disappoint. Keep up the good work.

We have visited here a handful of times now and always had a lovely evening... the atmosphere and the staff always excellent as is the food!

We visited on a Sunday evening. Not too busy but enough people to create an atmosphere. Pizza was delicious, best pizza around. The base is not thick and stodgy, it’s thin which is how I like mine (and it feels slightly healthier)! The dessert was also delicious. Our food came out in good time and all staff were very friendly, helpful and polite. Would definitely return again and recommend to anyone passing in the area.

Super pizza, incredible salad and brilliant kids dishes made this the highlight of our week in Norfolk. Very lucky to happen across this place on our journey home. I can still taste the gorgeous Chilli Norfolk Sausage pizza. Looking forward to our next visit!

We have been to this pub 3 times now and the pizza are just fantastic. The concept is spot on and Ican find no fault.

Birthday outing last night,4 people. this pub was recommended, a bit of a hike from Norwich but ....Oh how it was worth it! Busy but not cramped the atmosphere was great the staff were efficient and delightful. The service was fast and the food cooked and presented to perfection. One of our party was Gluten free and the pasta and Pizza bases were available gluten free. and there was good choice for all courses. The final bill really was.the best kind of surprise! Highly recommended (Best to book )

Came here as a large family group. Was disappointed with the starter options as they were mainly all bread (knocked a Point off for this). The pizza options all sounded delicious and were described just like a meal would be (also wine pairings).

Called in for lunch on a bike ride. Very good beer, pizza also first rate. Friendly staff and good country-pub ambience.

Me and my wife went here for the first time. Its lovely inside, the staff are really friendly and helpful. No rush at the tables, nicely spread break between each course. The food was outstanding. I will definitely be back again.

Pub looking very dirty and needs a bit of a refurb, garlic bread is great but pizza was only just warm, chicken tough. My husband had a small pasta dish that had tough chicken, hardly any sauce and pasta was hard.

What s refeshing change to have a reasonably priced gastro pub with just fantastic food. Starters are traditional and on the menu looked a little 'boring' however, they were really delicious. We all choose a different one and created a sharing platter. The mains are a selection of pizzas. Again great quality of ingredients and flavour by the bucket load. My dessert was wow. Ice cream with a shot of hot ecpresso and a shot of Amaretto, a traditional Italien starter. Our waitress was so lovely. This is not a restaurant with its head stuck up somewhere. It was efficient welcoming and great value for money. 4 of us with drinks 3 courses was £114. I really cant grumble as we had at least 2 alcholic drinks each. Defo going back.

Pasta and pizzas were v good and the atmosphere was convivial and cosy. What really stands out is the service : possibly the friendliest and loveliest waitresses ever!

We had been recommended this place by various quarters and we were not disappointed.

This is a really well postitioned pub, with good access and parking. I had a warm welcome by both the staff and roaring fire, it was really warm and cosy inside. There is a nice outside area, but the weather was to chilly to make the most of this. The menu was good although there were no light bites, service was fast and extreamly friendly by well informed staff.

We were a large family party so the long table near the entrance was ideal. The food was not exceptional but enjoyable nonetheless - pizza & pasta rather than fish, my preferred food. Staff very friendly and service excellent. One or two tried the gin and seemed happy!

Yet another great meal at The Kings Head. There really is no need to go to a chain pizza restaurant when you can get amazing pizza and pasta here. And that’s not all!

Actually to be serious........this is just a lovely place to go and has that unmistakable touch of people who really care. Lovely atmosphere, pizza, gin, log fire, scrabble door signs and brilliant friendly service.

Disappointed. We booked in advance for a jazz evening and arrived in plenty of time to find the place very busy. The table we had booked had been taken by somebody else and we were slotted on the end of another party's table. It took a long time before anybody took our order, despite trying to attract their attention, and by the time we were served I'd lost interest in eating it. On a quieter night this could be a good place but last night they had more customers than they could cope with and our experience was poor.

Met up with friends for an evening catch up and thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful old Inn. The staff are really friendly and helpful with amazing Pizzas and incredible stock of Gins.

My chicken and Pancetta salad was just fabulous. The croutons fresh and yummy. Attentive and very friendly staff though we missed Rachel. Will def go back very soon.

I went to the Old Kings Head with a colleague for dinner - the pizza was fantastic, great flavour combinations with a Suffolk twist. The atmosphere was old world pub with character and the staff were really friendly. There is also a selection of over 100 gins however unfortunately I was driving so couldn't sample.

We dropped in for a light lunch, and were delighted by the quality and value for money of of the food, comfort of the dining area, and the friendliness of the service.

We arrived to find the fire blazing and the pub clothed in candle light. Families, friends, couples and dogs all relaxed and enjoying themselves. Quality of food, service, and welcome always consistently high. Some other pubs could learn a few tricks from The Kings Head. Thank you once again

Visited when this pub was first taken over and haven't rushed back due to the choice, at the time, being pizza or pizza. And if ever a pub has improved over time, it's this one. Lovely, welcoming log fire, helpful staff, warm lighting and candles, great music (so good to hear in a pub, as PRS licenses are so costly these days)...and the food was lovely! This pub is a real demonstration of how a pub can be steadily improved over time. It's has even, recently won Norfolk Pub of the Year and Pub of the Year, both awarded by CAMRA. And well deserved too. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and it won't be so long before we return, next time!

We have been visiting this place since it reopened a few years ago. We always come here to eat at least once when on holidays to Suffolk. This is a true hidden gem - fantastic decor, friendly staff, lovely loos (!) and tons of board games.

A 'bigger than it looks' place with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Five of us had a lunch and drinks and all enjoyed what we chose. Prices were not bad either. Well worth a visit.

Good quality, authentic pizzas. Nice selection of real ales and more gains than you can shake a stick at. Pizza not cheap, if that's what you want try Lidl.

This a 15th century inn now specialising in homemade pizzas and pasta. The food is excellent. The bar is well stocked. Good wines, beers and spirits. The staff here are very friendly and accommodating.

In an area not known for an over supply of good pubs, this should be on your ‘favourites’ list. Nice old restaurant with gently trendy furniture, sits alongside the bar which has the best (50+) Gin selection. Pizzas were above average for a pub and huge! ‘I’ll be back’ as they say!

Popped in for tea recently and had a fantastic experience. The customer service was very good and the standard of the food and presentation was top notch. The ambience was lovely too. Brilliant choice of real ales and staff knowledgable about them.

We eat here regularly but recently introduced friends to the place and we were all put off by the absolutely terrible music they are playing here now. It’s like a fast food place where they want to get you out ASAP! It was a sort of Mexican Spanish fusion elevator music! DIRE

Stayed in lovely Brockdish last week and this wonderful pub was within staggering distance of our dear little cottage. My husband loved the choice of ales on offer, the pizzas are really very good and the staff, Rachel and Diane were very sweet and always took the time to have a little chat and made you feel very welcome. As the owner of a large, well behaved (mostly) dog, I think they are missing a trick with their no dogs allowed after 6pm rule. I work in a country pub and we have a no dog in the restaurant rule, but they are allowed in the bar. I'm not suggesting allowing dogs per se, but a couple of tables near the door where you can eat at a sensible time would be great. That aside, we had a lovely visit and wouldnt hesitate to recommend this pub!

Visited the Old King's Head whilst on holiday, following a recommendation and as a bit of a treat to celebrate GCSE results!

This place turns out consistently good food on the Italian theme but not just good pizza; here you can choose from a selection of superb pizzas prepared in their own pizza oven. Also on the menu are excellent pasta dishes and salads. But it gets even better because they are also happy to prepare your meal using gluten free ingredients and it is just as delicious. A happy place for vegetarian and vegan eaters too. We squeezed in some delicious homemade ice cream too.

The pizza's are fantastic, crisp light stone base with wonderful toppings. Delicious desserts too! Few issues with staffing but manageress on top of it.

After someone recommended the place to us and said they only do pizza and pasta, we thought well we like both and if that’s all they do, it should be pretty good and a wide variety.

Visited this pub for the first time last night with friends.

Popped in Sunday lunch for the first time after hearing and reading positive reviews. We were not disappointed, the food was excellent and the staff were very friendly, helpful and informal. Only negative was I must have had the first pint of real ale pulled as it was just after opening time and it wasn't the best. The glass of house Sauvignon I had with the pizza made up for it. Great value and will definitely return.

I cycled 15 miles to meet friends for a drink and rang in advanced and asked if I could charge my electric bike and to my delight they had already set up an extension lead in the back outside area for me. The pub was very busy and we had an excellent evening, couldn't fault food or ale. An excellent selection of gins. Well worth a visit

Visited last Friday. Decided to try the king prawn linguine for a change from pizza. It was delicious and could possibly become my favourite. One of our party had sun dried tomato and goats cheese salad which was a big hit and our third member had pizza which, as always, didn’t disappoint. The apple tart for desert was really lovely and the gin wasn’t bad either! This restaurant is a gem in the heart of South Norfolk.

Very simple, very fresh, beautifully presented food that was very tasty. We visited with family and all enjoyed our meal. The staff were very helpful & friendly. Wonderful interior, quite unusual & quirky, but still simpathetic to the beautiful timbered building!

We came here on the off chance and it was simply perfect. A really friendly welcome when we arrived and a great table with a lovely clean high chair for our toddler. The pizzas are delicious and the pasta is fresh and absolutely delicious! Well worth visiting if you are in the area. The service was perfect and friendly and we felt very relaxed.

What the people who run this place will gain from just another review I can’t quite imagine. So why bother? Because this place stands for the very finest values. Simple food, the best ingredients, cooked by experts in a great venue; all accompanied by a terrific and terrifically affordable wine list. I do laugh that the Italian menu is accompanied by a largely French wine list; the Italians would hate it, but the people at the Kings Head are right. The pizza is a demonstration of why this can be a great dish. Anyway; I’ll shut up because I feel I am patronising people who know what they’re talking about and don’t need my raving input. If you live within distance of this place and you appreciate good food - go! And I’m writing this after a takeaway. Will be back to eat in soon. So impressed.

Fantastic choice of pizza, including at least 4 vegetarian choices. We were a party of 10 and very well looked after by polite, attentive staff. All pizzas, despite the size of a dinner plate, were finished off with no complaints. The pizzas were also reasonably priced, all being around £10.

Staying locally, our hosts suggested this pub restaurant for a Sunday dinner.

What a surprise, we had expected a pub taking he easy option of knocking outbought-in pizzas. Not a bit of it. It was like being in Italy ( and we know Italy well). Great food - fine pasta and pizzas, home made and locally sourced. What e gem. Oh! and the service could not have been friendlier or more efficient. If you find yourself walking the Waveney valley or simply want to treat yourself in the vanishing world of great pub food, try the Old King’s Head.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here, it’s so nice to find local restaurants this good! The food was delicious and the gin menu was fab (150 gins to choose from!). Had to wait a little while for food, but didn’t mind at all as the staff were very polite and the atmosphere was great and it was also very busy! Will 100% be returning and would certainly recommend :)

Lots of parking space and a level entrance to the dining area. There also is outside space. The welcome was warm and there were fresh flowers on each immaculately clean table. It's the little things that make the difference for me! The atmosphere was relaxed on Sunday lunchtime with families and locals just drinking at the bar. The chess set and the table skittles were popular with both children and couples alike and there were "180 gins and counting" available. Service was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable but relaxed and unhurried. The mozzarella starters had a lovely dressing "with a zing" and the pizzas were made with care and fantastic ingredients - really meaty anchovies and pancetta and coppa. We finished with the lovely homemade ice-cream.

I'm a big fan of the Gastropub. Locally sourced hearty meals and real ales from down the road. Well, apart from a few regional beers this is where is stops here. Instead, you are tantalised by a Gin list containing around 180 varieties and an Italian menu packed full of fresh produce. This concept actually presents a refreshing change to fish and chips, lamb shanks or Chilli. The menu is dominated by pizzas, all very different and not over complicated by too many ingredients. There are a few pasta dishes and salads and a decent selection of starters and desserts.

When I started to write this review, I was somewhat surprised to see a few negative reviews. Then I noticed that the reviews were quite old, in some cases 2-3 years.

We are so lucky to have this nearby. Food is delicious, atmosphere is friendly and easy going and the gin menu is always a winner!

And they do. They have three linguine dishes and pizza. Plus garlic bread, mozzarella and dough balls as starter nibbles.

Since we discovered the Old Kings Head last year my family have been pestering to go back there every time a family meal is on the cards. Mother's Day gave as an easy excuse to revisit. Given all the ennui surrounding the casual dining market at the moment when the casual dining chains are so average and uninspiring, it's lovely to be able to find a little gem that does things differently. Our pizzas were all excellent, again. The garlic bread should win awards. Massive range of gins is a big draw. We'll be back sometime!

I've been here a few times now and I've thoroughly enjoyed each time. The selection of gins are excellent, the look of the pub is lovely, a very historic feeling like a traditional English pub. It always seems to be busy so the atmosphere is great. The pizzas are excellent, and very reasonably priced. I really have no complaints at all. This would be my number one recommendation in the Diss to Bungay area.
