Great little pub off the beaten track that sells cask ales. If I lived nearer to this place i would be in there a lot enjoying a oint and a good chat. Great place.

Great little pub, tucked away in the countryside. No frills, no music, no gimmicks = an enjoyable place to just enjoy a pint. Will definitely visit again.

Lovely little pub out in the sticks. Great cask selection, lager available (although the landlord will criticise you for ordering one), no music, screens or anything to make you question that this isn’t a real pub. Just good vibes and a very comical landlord. I will visit as often as I can.

Traditional pub where the locals come to chat and share cheeses (Sunday's). Proper ale House where beer is poured straight from the barrel.

On arrival I greeted the barman with a ''hello how are you.'' This was completely ignored. The pub is certainly unusual and quirky but that shouldn't be an excuse for rudeness. We eventually were served with some fairly decent beer but not great. we drank this in the garden which was average at best with litter blowing around. We decided not to order more drinks due to the poor service but returned our empties to the bar and said thank you to the barman. this was again totally ignored.

This is a real oddity. Looks like a rather dishevelled house (let alone old house) on the outside and the inside is not dissimilar. It's almost like the pub was abandoned 50 years and then restarted recently without any decorating or modernisation. This is not a criticism at all. A great range of cask ales on offer, four or five and I plumped for a couple Hopheads. The pub has a micropub vibe about it but in truth, micropubs have an Old House vibe about them. Worth seeking out as you're unlikely to stumble across it.

Very cute old school pub with direct pour cask ale and a very cosy vibe. A proper local, which makes me want to move within walking distance, but welcoming to all comers.

Top Ale. Friendly and hospitable landlord. Reasonably priced in comparison to others nearby. Locals offered to share their pickles. All round excellent experience.

Very traditional country pub experience. No signage outside and you could easily walk past without realising it's a pub. Great ale selection with beers from all over the country. Occasionally sells local Larkin's beer from wooden casks but unfortunately none was available when I dropped in. Also sells cider from wooden cask. A small seating area in the heritage pub interior encourages conversation among the customers. There's also a very pleasant garden. This pub won't be for everyone but if you're looking for a quiet, traditional ale house you'll probably love it. Only open evenings during the week and is closed 3pm - 6pm on weekends.

A friendly, off-the beaten track local pub, serving great ales direct from the cask. Very traditional interior, and the locals are engaged in funny conversations and banter. This was a great pit stop on our long walk. I think this was how all pubs used to be - a genuine meeting place rather than somewhere to extract money out of you - I hope it never changes!

I wish I could of brought my dearly departed dad here. I'm so proud to have this as my local because this is exactly what a pub used to be. No gastro-goop, no fancy blackboard with 'meaningful' quotes. This place is is all about warm welcomes, great folk, fine ales and a good bit of banter. What's not to like ?

It's unusual in these days of banality and ennui to find a publican who is eccentric, interesting, tells a good story and is dedicated to a good pint. Here's the eccentric bit - Nick the publican of the Old House in Ightham refuses to advertise his pub. There are no external advertising signs to differentiate this pub from the houses surrounding it in this well-healed small village near Sevenoaks. Which means you have to know it exists our you would drive right past it. It also gives the pub a private club feel, as all the locals who go to the Old House know each other and are chatty and great fun. Unlike a lot of pubs with a fixed clientele the locals in this pub and very inclusive. I walked in as a stranger and within two minutes I was discussing the raising of dogs with a posh middle aged lady with a glint in her eye and big personality. This conversation took place while two dogs were having a convivial "sniff and tussle" session on the floor of the bar. The beer is also a big passion of the publican as he keeps an ever changing selection of guest ales, all in tip-to condition, on the wood, all accompanied by.... well nothing but chat. NO piped Music, NO annoying gambling machines, just a classic English pub just 40 minutes from London, where the locals are engaging and care more about robust conversations conversation with old friends. If you are a moron who can't get his face out of his mobile phone or iPad, then this is not the place for you. People actually talk in the this fabulous remnant of a 50's pub.

The landlord would probably hate me for saying this because he's a self-effacing sort of bloke but The Old House is probably one of the greatest pubs in the world. There's no sign advertising it as a pub and if you motored past you wouldn't even notice it. Instead there's a stunning selection of ciders and beer all poured straight from the barrel,no music, fruit machines, screaming kids or any other horror that the 20th Century English pub tends to inflict on someone who just wants a pint and a natter. The small plate of English mustard to accompany the packet of Twiglets was a master stroke. Please don't go here expecting anything different - you'll hate it. In fact don't even tell anyone about The Old House. This is strictly on a need-to-know basis. We don't want any riff-raff spoiling the place.

I am a frequent visitor to the Old House and note that any serious review of the vittles’ has thus far not ben undertaken It is this shortcoming that I wish to address. On the evening of Saturday 18th July 2015 there was only the standard menu and it tends to be more than adequate for a supper. Late sittings are popular as food is served up to 10.45 pm. I love the fact that the menu is so very unpretentious, consistent and you know what you are getting. As we had already had a substantial meal earlier that evening and selected the house tapas served “a la planche”. On this particular evening this was comprised of the following: Fromage et d'oignons croustillants aux noix mélangées This unusual combination of flavours worked well together despite my pre-conceived bias and were cooked to perfection Minuscules bâtons de pain recouvert d’extrait de levure avec de la moutarde anglaise These remarkably tasty breadstcks served with a creamy mustard sauce are an act of culinary genius and cannot be lauded enough. Grattons de porc avec oreillers de crevettes frits et lardons fumés I was dubious about combining meat with fish as I am a traditional veg with three veg man. Outstanding flavours. Rondeaux de chocolat a l’orange et de menthe Orange, mint and chocolate combined, it cannot possibly go wrong. I did not take up the offer of cheese and biscuits. The cheeseboard used to be almost exclusively English with the occasional interloper from Llangloffan, Carmarthen or God forbid Scotland or L**c*sh**e. It was on my last visit almost exclusively French and this is a dangerous change that cannot be allowed to persist. Having been inconvenienced by operation stack twice within a month anything French in origin has been condemned as unfit for human consumption until we take back Calais in occupied lower Kent. The Yorkshire Embassy has issued a proclamation on the unsound nature of anything and everything French as a direct consequence including holidays, Chanel and Givenchy perfumes, hairy armpits, Sacha Distel LPs, all buildings designed by Philippe Starck or Le Corbusier, bad breath, Dior, Vuitton. Cardin, Lacroix, Gaultier and agrarian women with beards are all subject to an immediate banning order. I will be campaigning for the Old House to be awarded a Michelin star once the French embargo is lifted.

This pub was once run by members of my family, but way,way back in the midst of time. The family name was Bassett and they were a long established family from Ightham. Some of the members had a bit of a falling out and started this pub, mainly as a drinking establishment for themselves. I am delighted to see that it has been "fancified" but hopefully only a bit. I loved the run down appearance of the place and the beer was very, very good - so what more do you need in a pub?

I visited with a family last Friday and was incredibly impressed by the staff, despite it being busy they were always helpful. We had one issue with one part of a meal, but it was quickly and efficiently addressed and resolved. The food was excellent and my steak was cooked perfectly, as was the other visitors I came with. Although the cost was quite high, you genuinely get what you pay for - a great atmosphere, tasteful decoration and the quality of food was definitely reflective of the cost. The only thing I would suggest, is that the website has photos of the staff, so they can be thanked by name - but of course only if they have no issue with this, they have a right to privacy like all of us. I've not been to a Michelin restaurant, but I imagine it would be like the Carpenters Arms. Thank you staff, chef(s) and pub manager.

Disappointing. Starters were ok. Steak was full of sinew and tough. Chicken ok but with heavy over-rich sauce. Pork Loin almost inedible. Service was slow, one waitress didn’t know what black pepper was! We had to remind them about our second drinks order. At the end we were charged for 2 extras at £1 each. We didn’t query it but have no idea why we were charged. We will definitely not be returning.
