The food was superb, but I wonder there had been some staff issues. We were there for 2 and a half hours but probably spent an hour waiting for the various courses to arrive. Maybe a waiter or two had called in sick, but it rather took the shine off the experience.

My family and I haven’t been to the Carpenters Arms for a while and was recommended the new menu by a family member. We ordered the roast, when it arrived the beef was over cooked and the veg was diced and looked like it was cooked from frozen. My partner had tempura crab burger that was deep fried and looked unappealing. The service was slow they forgot our desserts, therefore we were waiting over 40 mins for these.

We received poor service here yesterday at lunch time. First off, one of our starters didn’t arrive. It came with the mains, so we sent it back, as it should have come with all the other starters. Next, the roast chicken for 2 people came on just one plate with all the vegetables, yorkshires and roast potatoes. We had to ask for another plate, but when it came out, it was cold and wet from the dishwasher. Had to ask for extra gravy too for the roast. Presentation of the chicken sharer wasnt great. Lastly, someone asked for mustard with their roast beef, but had nearly finished the meal before it arrived. No one asked at the beginningif we wanted any sauces with the mains. Food is good, but service let the experience down. Manager didn’t seem bothered when we complained. However, we received money off our bill. Nice pub and garden, but need better front of house staff.

Been here twice and this was my second time. Came back because my first experience was positive. Overall the place works well, ok staff and decent food. Shout out to the chef as everything I ate was great. The rooms are spacious and well served with all you need. Could do with some music or radio at breakfast as it was too quiet and people were whispering, create an atmosphere. They have the best sourdough bread. Two no things stood out for me on this 3 night stay. Sophie the waitress/bar tender etc. Sophie’s non- technical skills are simply amazing. Her situation awareness was second to none, it seemed at times like she had eyes in the back of her head. She covered up others mistakes amazingly well so much so that the customer may not of even realised. On countless occasions across my 3 night stay she did this. Body language, not rushing, smiling, pausing and distancing, trust me she has it all. Local higher end restaurants, hotels or even private exclusive places you would do well to observe Sophie, she has it all. My second key observation. The place on one evening was busy as it was a quiz evening. That’s great and says a lot. So I go to the restaurant area and order. As I do this a group of 3 arrive unaccompanied to a table near me. One of the 3 was in a wheelchair and disabled. The 3 sit down and order drinks. Before I carry on just think how difficult just achieving that is. So the 3 settle and a few minutes pass. Then a group of 4 arrive and get escorted to the table that the group of 3 are now settled at. So we have a stand off. After some uncomfortable moments for all the worst happens. The group of 3 people which includes the wheelchair customer are requested to relocate. Wrong, wrong and wrong. So the management got it wrong, those 4 that arrive (all able bodied got it wrong) as they became bystanders to this and didn’t intervene (shameful) and the system got everyone wrong. Ok, this was a moment and doesn’t reflect my overall experience but guys (management) handle this stuff better as it matters more than your quality of the soap as this is a people issue. So awesome praise to Sophie and management up your game with your people thinking.

Poor management and awful waiter; Antonio. I was at a birthday dinner with my friends and I had one of the most awful dinners in terms of service, from our dedicated server. We were seated by what seemed like a flamboyant Italian server, pleasant and seated us. At first it all seemed fine, but it very quickly went downhill. We were not allocated to our correct table as the table was dirty and hadn't been cleared by the section the waiter was looking after. After 20 minutes we ended up getting a drinks and starters order. We ordered some bread, and all that came out was bread and butter, forget the plates or cutlery. We didn't see Antonio again after our 'starter' was served. Subsequent to that and after a lack of care, going in and out of the restaurant to ask for cutlery and drinks, Pheobe was there, and we were instantly relieved. She was attentive, apologetic and obviously over worked due to a lack of work on others parts. This mis-management was clear to us. The waiter who had been assigned to our section was; absent, rude, non-attentive, sarcastic, and ultimately didn't care; about service, his job, or his colleagues. Your staff is a reflection of your establishment, and if it were based on him, we would never return. Management need to have more visibility on how their day-to-day establishment is run. Pheobe was the hero of our night, she was everything he failed to be. I couldn't recommend her highly enough. The assistant manager on duty was helpful, and after some conversation she was amenable to amending the bill accordingly, but I did not have the confidence that the matter would go further. Your place is as only good as your staff; and Pheobe was excellent, especially based on the limited support and pay available to her.

Went for dinner with friends last night to celebrate a couple of birthdays. It is one of our usual ‘go to’ pub restaurants and we have been a lot over the years. Feel very disappointed with how downhill it has gone. Upon arrival we were brought out to a dirty hut as to which we were then moved on to another one which still was not set up. We had especially booked a hut for private dining. Once our hut was cleaned it was not set up with cutlery etc - so when it came to eating our starters we had asked for side plates which were never delivered so we ate off of napkins. Also one of us had to go in and get cutlery ourselves after asking a few times. The waiter serving us had a very poor and rude attitude - he started off very jokey and then became very rude and unattentive. When we asked for sauces he replied with ‘I’m busy’ which was unacceptable. He never checked in on us or asked for further drinks etc. There was a wonderful young waitress, think her name was Phoebe. She recognised our table and went above and beyond for us. She was running around after her own tables inside and shouldn’t have had the extra load on her shoulders. We were very impressed with her service however and I do hope this is recognised on her behalf. She made sure we had drinks and sauces and even had a general chat with us - extremely friendly and brilliant at her job! We spoke to the manager who was apologetic which we appreciate - also made us aware they were understaffed which we understood. But regardless of this - the waiters service should never had been as poor as it was. It will give the pub a bad name and reputation. The manager did reimburse our drinks as compensation which we appreciated. I just hope that his attitude to his job changes or he is spoken to about this - otherwise you may find further unhappy customers going forwards. Sadly I don’t think we will be returning anytime soon.

Have been coming to the Carpenters Arms for years and recently dined in one of the outdoor pods and was shocked at the lack of service. We had no cutlery or plates, I had to go into the restaurant twice to ask for them and ended up waiting inside until somebody could give me them. The Italian man who sat us at our table at the beginning did not offer us drinks, bring the cutlery or even come over to check we were ok once he had taken our order. Yet we could see him strolling around empty tables like a spare part. When we asked him for some condiments he said “I am busy” to which a lovely girl named Phoebe went and got them, along with our drinks. We expressed how disappointed we were and she got the manager for us who apologised to say that they had been short staffed. This does not warrant the rudeness and lack of service we experienced from the Italian waiter. Will not be returning until we are confident the service and overall experience has improved as the Carpenters Arms was once a great place we dined at regularly and it has significantly gone downhill.

My friends and I booked a garden pod for a friends birthday, on arrival we were shown out to our table which was covered in food and plates from the previous person, so we were moved to another pod, and had to wait whilst that pod which was also dirty was cleaned so that we could sit down. The service from our waiter was extremely poor, we ordered bread and starters which were brought out but with no cutlery or plates. We had to request these twice without ever getting them so in the end we ate our starters of off NAPKINS until my friend finally went in and got cutlery herself! We weren’t checked on by the waiter, and literally forgotten about. We had to chase the basics like drinks, cutlery etc. The only positive was when a waitress (Phoebe) took over, who was already running around like a headless chicken inside serving other tables that our service improved. She was brilliant and worth her weight in gold. We did ask to speak to the manager about the service we received and we were compensated for this, which was appreciated as the service definitely dampened the mood of what should have been a great nice with friends. We were told there were staff shortages which we appreciate however the restaurant was far from busy and you had the staff - it just some clearly pull their weight more than others. This did used to be a great restaurant that my friends and I have attended numerous times over the years, however sadly I don’t think we will be returning.

This place is very nicely decorated and you can see a lot of thought has been put into this. Food is very nice and we stayed over one night in one of their very nice rooms. The only downfall was when we went for dinner we were seated in one section that was empty and had been sitting waiting for someone to take our order of which I had to go and get them to come round, seemed that the person who showed us to our table had not told the restaurant staff we were there. All was good after that so not too much to grumble about. Breakfast was very nice and service spot on. We are planning on returning as it’s a hidden gem

We had chosen The Carpenters Arms to celebrate three July birthdays. Our son is to be 50 on the 30th, my daughter was 48 on the 1st and her husband will be 49 on the 11th. 14 of us arrived for Sunday dinner. Situated along a country lane with beautiful farmland backing on to the parking area, the pub is certainly well situated. With its floral arrangements, lights and decor it looks inviting. We were shown to our table and thereafter looked after by Antonio, our waiter. He was superb, with a charming manner and courteous politeness. To satisfy the needs of everyone, the ages ranged from 77 to 3 was no mean feat. And he even had time for the dog we had brought along. The menu was wide ranging and well described: Sunday roast was a particular favourite and the sharing plate for two was envied by many. The two youngest grandchildren enjoyed burger and chips and fish and chips. My daughter had phoned beforehand to say that the three year old had a number of food allegies: that was no problem for the chef. Nothing was too much trouble for Antonio. One guest requested additional gravy, another additional carrots: both were brought to the table. The dessert menu again satisfied the needs of all; crumbles, ice cream, sorbet, sticky toffee pudding were enjoyed. We had taken along two birthday cakes, left them with Antonio at the start of the meal, and on cue they were brought out after the dessert, candles lit and Happy Birthdays sung. It had been a lovely occasion, aided by the ambience, the staff, the food and wine. We did not feel rushed at all: we marvelled at the way 14 different meals appeared at the same time and we were grateful to the staff, particularly Antonio for his care and attention. We would certainly return again!

We had a 70th Birthday celebration for my husband at The Carpenters Arms. The staff were absolutely amazing, right from discussions about what was required, to placing the food orders in advance and the actual service on the day. The food was very good on the whole (only 1 mains dish was very small so disappointing). The organisation prior to the day was very good and on the day it was exceptional. What a great team. They allocated a separate space for our celebration and even gave us the space next to it, so we could have pre-lunch drinks and mingle. Suggestions were made about welcome drinks and this worked so well on the day. It was like a private party. Nothing was too much trouble on the day. A special mention to Sam and Ruthie who helped with the organisation and planning for the day. They were so helpful, making suggestions and reassuring us that nothing was too much trouble. We were able to pre-order using an electronic system, which made it much easier to organise. Thanks to Sam for all your help before the day 🤗 On the day, Ruthie was great with the preparations beforehand. Thank you Ruthie 🤗 A very special mention must go to Will Cooke too. Will was our server on the day and what an amazing service! He was brilliant from the start. He was happy, charming, great with people, looked after us incredibly well, very attentive, service was great and everyone loved him. Will even took a video of when the birthday cake was brought in and emailed it to us. He treated us so well and made the day so personal. As my husband says, he’s a “Top Man”. You couldn't possibly do anymore Will 🌟 If you get Will as your server on the day, you’ll be very lucky.

But this dinner for 8 was quite poor . Service when we finally got served was extremely slow . Nobody at our table ordered wine yet the wine glasses stayed on the table the whole meal . The heater & lighting to our cabin did not work …so we asked to move cabins . ( heater still did not work but the lighting was ok . we had to go in to ask for more drinks as we were bored waiting & our empty glass were not removed . The staff seemed to be completely forgetting we were outside . Can’t fault the food . Just they need to up there game a bit . Unfortunately we would not recommend eating or booking an external cabin . Our waitress was quite young & it may of been her first night . But not once did anyone mention this to us & nobody said sorry for the long delays . Unfortunately Poor

Went recently for a friend's birthday who had booked one of the outdoor huts. Upon arrival we were told there was no power to the hut so the lights, heaters & call button would not work. Given this was at the point the June weather hadn't been the best, I think this is something they should have warned about in advance, given this was an evening booking where it would get dark and chilly during the course of our meal. As the evening went on it got pretty dark, with only one candle to give us light. I'm sure we could have moved inside, but once an hour in & settled with food & drinks all over the table, it seemed a faff. To make matters worse, about 10min before we left, another member of staff realised the garden lights could be switched on, which provided quite a bit of light, and also showed that the other two huts did have power so we could have sat in there! Even the garden lights would have been nice enough! In terms of food, there were quite a few things missing from the menu which was frustrating. I had the special crab burger which was really nice. Everyone else seemed happy their mains. One ordered brandy butter ice cream which clearly had been in the freezer quite a while! 50% of the desserts not available. The saving grace was our server Will who was absolutely fantastic! He was cheerful, friendly, honest and very attentive! Constantly coming to check if we needed anything (we were the only ones in the garden & I've had it before where you get a bit forgotten) and nothing was too much trouble. He was very apologetic for the power situation & missing menu items; none of which was his fault. So thank you Will, all the stars are for you and the ones taken off were not your fault!

Arrival at 0945 and waited over 40mins for drinks. Finally left at 1145am due to waiting for food and drinks I do agree it was busy but if I wasn't with my father I would of asked for the bill to be reviewed and the service charge taken off as I wasn't happy but I didn't make a fuss. We waited 20 minutes to be seated after our allocated booking time. Despite the bar staff acknowledging us and saying they’ll be one minute we were forgotten about despite chasing. At this time the bar / restaurant was not busy. We finally seated, and the waiter could not have been more rude if he tried. Our drinks of coke and water took > 20 minutes to arrive. Upon questioning the waiter (we had a thirsty toddler with us) he decided it would be acceptable to walk me to the bar and say ‘look we have to prepare drinks’…the bar was empty and no one was preparing anything. When the food came, it was cold, the Yorkshire puddings clearly had been sitting out all day. The food was hardly edible. If we didn’t have a small child we would have left before the food came. The waiter was continuously rude, the place seemed really badly run which is unfortunate as we have been many times before. This was the first time I’ve ever asked for the discretionary service charge to be taken off a bill, when I did the waiter snatched the bill and stormed off. When leaving the restaurant we was met with other very dissatisfied customers not only with the food but service too, We tried to give feedback personally, but this was met with shrug of shoulders and no response. Was a shambles from start to finish - would not recommend

Nice, dog friendly pub with attractive outside seating area and pleasant staff, but food was totally unacceptable especially for the price and this is the only place I've been to in a very long time where they didn't come back to ask if our food was alright, even though it was not very busy at all. Had they have done, I would of told them my wife's roast beef was very dry and tough and had a lot of inedible gristle, potatoes were really overcooked, dry and hard, Yorkshire pudding was not really edible as it had the qualities of baked cardboard. My dish should have come with crispy leeks, but I'm sure they were missing, otherwise, sausages and bubble and squeak were ok. If they had of come to check on us and offered us a refund I would not of put this review up and given the place another try. As it stands, I won't be back and cannot recommend anyone spend £22 on a poor quality dried-up roast dinner.

Been going here for years, but noticeably worse since the change of ownership - now part of a chain and it shows. Very slow service, no personality in the staff (the lady all in black i don't think she smiled at all) Had the Sunday Roast - none of us on our table, nor the adjoining tables ate more than a bite of the Yorkshires, the roast potatoes were dry (almost as if they were reheated from a previous service) One two different occasions we had to chase up our drinks, the pub wasn't exactly busy and we had a 12:15 table so its not like they had had a hard long service. Neither time was there an apology and on the 2nds time the only comment from the non-smiling waitress was "were very buisy". Ive seen that place stuffed to the rafters before and never obce had an issue with the service. Struck me that there were only three staff doing a lot of running around, whereas in the past there were a lot more - i guess its a way to make more profit. Talking of profits - they dont warn you, its hidden in the small print - that tables of 4 or more get a discretionary 12.5% service charge. I should have asked for this to be removed, my mistake, as the service was never worht the £20 they charged me. We have been going for years, my parents live nearby - i guess we will have to find a new local restaurant as this was very disappointing. They asked me to write this review so i thoight it was only right i was honest - i could easily have written "average" and given it 4 stars, but that kinda removes the point of a review as it would have be untrue.

Visited in mid-April for a Saturday lunch. Food good, service a bit slow for follow-up drinks and puddings. Reason for one star is that 12.5% service charge is automatically added to the bill regardless of numbers of patrons and that dogs are allowed in restaurant area--I have no issues if they are in the bar area. A Lab start to bark and get boisterous when another dog came in. The second dog, a dachshund, was placed up on a bench seat and was constantly fed food off the owner's plate. Waitress said it was policy of pub to allow dogs into the restaurant. I won't be using the restaurant again.

Having enjoyed two very nice lunches at this pub we booked an evening table for six as we had 4 friends staying with us. Unfortunately the experience was nowhere near as good. Having given our food orders, the starters arrived reasonably promptly and they were all good. We then endured a very long wait for main courses. After about 40 minutes one of the staff came over and said "you've ordered three fish and chips..... We've only got two left" Not ideal but we changed one order. We then had to wait another 20 minutes for our meals to arrive. When they did both shepherds pies were very overcooked. The chips and peas were cold on one of the fish orders. We asked about a mac and cheese side order to be told "it's in the oven" - again not ideal. When it eventually arrived it looked congealed. After our two puddings had been finished we asked for the bill which firstly took ages to arrive and then nobody came to take payment. After about ten minutes we walked to the bar with our cards at the ready. Not a good finish to the evening. This was such a let down after telling our friends how good this place was. Hopefully just a blip?

Booked Sunday lunch after eating here a few weeks ago with work colleagues which was excellent!. Food & service were all without fault hence I wanted my husband to experience this venue. The restaurant is really very nice, a nice ambience with friendly staff and good service. Love that it’s dog friendly as well despite not owning a dog myself. The Sunday lunch was excellent overall with the exception of the roast potatoes which really were awful. I had the trio of meats which was lovely especially the beef. The vegetables were a good mix and cooked very well so why do restaurants let themselves down with poorly cooked roast potatoes. In my view and along with many other people, the roast potatoes can make or break a good Sunday roast. These were on the whole a decent flavour inside, but hard and unpalatable on the outside and you could see instantly that they looked at best dispiriting. That said, I would definitely return but prob give the roasties a swerve.

Lovely ambiance and staff but my friend and I wanted a light lunch not a dinner which was the only menu available. We were told, due to lack of deliveries, there was no sandwich option - really? So we both chose the starter of "Whipped chicken liver parfait, apple & rhubarb chutney, crispy leeks, toasted brioche (gfa)(490 Kcal) £9.00" When it arrived it was so small that we did not even have a full brioche, so delicious as it was it was a canape NOT a starter and please see the price too. So I ordered a side salad which I believe cost @ £4.50 comprising a lot of endive/ frise from a packet on a small amount of chopped tasteless tomato without a dressing. Not impressed - I cannot believe that they want people to return. I am happy to pay for my food but this was extremely disappointing so I would not recommend the restaurant at this establishment.

Very dissapointed with the menu choice. Only 2 vegetarian options for the main course. The wild rice salad was not available (no protein in this meal) and the other one was a burger. I chose the vegetable brother starter and a miniscule bowl of chips. The broth came with a stale cheese twist pastry and two slices of dry stale bread with no butter. I had to ask for butter which was begrudgingly given to me. We were asked if we wanted anything else and I said a spoon would be useful to eat my soup with. However, the latte coffee was excellent. Would I go back to eat? Absolutely not. I saw the burger that was served to another customer and McDonald's do a better one at a ⅓rd of the price. It really is not difficult to produce some interesting innovative meals for vegetarians. Very dissapointed.
