Our first visit since the change of management and if anything found this old favourite to have improved. Same great atmosphere, great selection of food and beer, still (very!) dog friendly but the service has improved immeasurably! Thank you for a lovely evening, and a special mention to Dominique who looked after us. See you again soon!

Gracias 🌻

My old July 24th, review was: 5 stars: I am a regular, i enjoy the selection of craft ciders and real ales, definitely a place to be when you need a relaxing moment with your family, with your friends or just alone! Update Dec 2024: Honest opinion...Unfortunately this old landmark of Leicester has lost its character...craft Ciders and Ale beers replaced by standard cheap stuff sold overpriced.. rotisserie chicken replaced by an industrial coffee machine...and proper British food with sandwiches and packed crisps? Not a special REAL ALE pub anymore.., just a standard, chain, usual pub!

I'd driven past The Old Horse many times but never been in. On this occasion, we needed to get parked up early for a popular De Montfort Hall concert, so we decided to walk over (5 or 6 mins) for a meal. It's a big pub inside but with a good ambience and a friendly welcome. There's a great range of beers on and CAMRA list them but it was a late night drive back, so I was sticking to no & lo alcohol beers this time for a clear head. There's a varied menu with a good range of straightforward pub grub. Vegetarian options are available. When I ordered at the bar there was little in the way of low alcohol options, disappointingly. Even the young bar staff admitted they should have more. No low alcohol gins at all and no Guinness Zero!!!! I ordered food for the two of us and it came pretty quickly. Service throughout our visit was excellent. The food was OK....my sausage and mash turned out to be in a Yorkshire pudding (my fault in not reading the menu properly) That was fine & tasty but I found it too much heavy food, so just ate the sausages & about half the mash. I needed a bucket of gravy, not a small jug!!!! 😆 Still, my wife enjoyed her broccoli bake & we drank up & headed over Vicky Park to the De Mont. I'd definitely come again, but choose my food order more carefully. If I could persuade someone else to drive, I'd enjoy a couple of pints too!!! Remember the drivers, guys, please!!! Thanks to the staff at The Old Horse. Nice pub. A good 4-stars of a visit on a Tuesday night.

Visited this summer and, while the pub itself is nice, my experience with the owner was disappointing. I raised a small complaint about the food, but he responded with a rude, dismissive attitude and spoke to me as if I was beneath him. It’s a shame the atmosphere is ruined by such disrespectful behavior—I won’t be returning. Ps Big Bad Boss Man Owner: if I’m paying for food and it’s not up to standard, take the feedback professionally instead of reacting like a grumpy old man. You even explain this in your replies to reviews.

Visited here yesterday for the first time. The staff were all really lovely and welcoming. It was pleasant, busy but not over crowded. Decor was nice, looked as a pub should look! Only reason I'm knocking it down a star is because we ordered the classic burgers. My first came out still cold in the middle of one of the burgers. This was however, sorted quickly and efficiently, with a brand new plate of food being bought out, piping hit and then also a refund for that burger, without even asking for one. I'd recommend going here. The burgers were huge and presented well, but were frozen and looked like a rustlers burger. It tasted nice, and the bun was nice, chips were perfect, but for the price, I think i will pass on food next time. Drinks were a reasonable price!

Don't know about the food because we weren't able to sit. We tried to book ahead for a party of 6 but were told the don't take bookings and there would be space. Lo and behold we turn up there's no space and some of the tables are reserved! So much for not taking bookings!! Some of our party travelled a fair distance to meet up as well! Appalling customer service. Not happy. Edit: for reference, we did try to resolve without success and then spent 10 minutes in the entry area trying to locate another place last minute. Maybe you could try a ''no show within 10-15 minutes'' policy...at least that provides a reasonable wait time for those who've reserved and those that may wait for a table to free up.

Never been before, we were going to see a show and popped in for some food. I ordered a hotdog with chillies and sourcream, my partner ordered a fillet of fish. My partners meal was OK but not as described on menu, it wasn't a fillet of fish it was two fish fingers in a bun. My meal arrived with a cold hot dog and chilli, worse than that the bread was stale and disintegrating, my chips were hot but I had to pay extra £2.50 as this meal did not come with chips as standard which is OK, however I got half the amount my partner had with her meal which did come as standard. I did report this to a member of staff and he said he would have a word with the chef.. We were sitting right opposite the kitchen, I saw the member of staff go into kitchen, scrape food in the bin and walk back out so I don't think it was mentioned. Not a great experience for a first visit so I'll give it a miss next time.

I've visited this pub several times over the 20 years that I’ve lived in Leicester (not a regular) and I've never had any issues until yesterday. We ordered two different hot baguettes and cheesy chips. When the food arrived, one of the baguettes had the wrong sauce. Although it was a minor issue, the lady serving us was happy to correct it. We were playing a Monopoly card game and stopped as soon as the food arrived. Unfortunately, my BLT baguette was overcooked and extremely hard—definitely not enjoyable. The pulled pork baguette was cold, even though we tried the food as soon as it was served. WITHIN 5MINS, I approached a staff member to express my concerns, and the young lad was very polite and informed the landlady, who was sitting just behind us outside. When the landlady came over, I explained the issues. She told me that the pulled pork baguette is supposed to be served cold, which I found odd since it was listed on the hot menu. She didn’t seem too pleased with my complaint but took the food back and told me I could get a refund. We weren’t in a rush, as we planned to stay for a few more drinks, but she kindly brought the refund to our table, which I appreciated. We continued playing cards and left the money on the table. Then, a gentleman approached us and asked, "I hope you’re not gambling?" We replied that we were just playing Monopoly, a card game. He then asked, "Why is that money on the table?" I explained that it was the refund for the food. Suddenly, in a raised and aggressive tone, he said, "Yeah, that’s why your food got cold—because you were too busy playing cards." I told him that wasn’t true because we started eating right away. He then said he would check the CCTV. I encouraged him to do so, and he walked off mumbling to himself. I could tell he realized he was going to be wrong. What an absolute idiot. Im guessing he was the owner or manager. To add to this, if the pulled pork is supposed to be served cold, as you claimed, why did you blame us for it going cold? I’d be happy to watch the CCTV with you if you’d like. You literally have a “HOT BAGUETTE” section on your menu as I’ve posted. In your responses to other reviews, you mention that people don't come to you directly to complain about the food. Well, we did, and look how you reacted. Maybe that’s why people don’t approach you—because you become aggressive. You was unprofessional and disrespectful, maybe you was having a bad day. I won’t be returning unless the guy invites me to watch the CCTV so I can watch his face in disappointment because we wasn’t lying.

Great pub with nice surroundings inside and out to the point you'll forget you're close to the middle of the city. Always friendly staff with good service and large range of drinks. Didn't order food on this occasion but can be a bit hit and miss although reasonably priced.

This is my absolute favorite spot for jacket potatoes! I always go for the classic potato with butter, melted cheese and a sprinkle of salt and pepper for only £4. The potatoes are baked perfectly soft and the gooey cheese makes every bite so satisfying. Highly recommend this place as their servings are generous, delicious potatoes, friendly staff and affordable prices. A must visit for any jacket potato lover!
