The most horrendous customer service I have ever experienced. We as a family of 5 had spent around £80 on food and drinks for a Sunday lunch, my husband ordered a couple of starters which was edible I had meat and stuffing sandwich which was the same just bog standard edible. However we had ordered the 3 children sausage dinners which were rock solid frozen. Carrots peas 1 roast potatoe and a yorkshire pudding with 2 sausages was all that was on the plate the only thing my children were able to actually chew were the sausages. And for £8.50 per dinner I would expect it to be not only cooked but actually ‘enjoyable’ when I took the food back to the bar I was greeted with the most rude argumentative manager I have ever known after talking down to me insisting I should pay for them because even though she agreeed the veg wasn’t cooked the kids half ate the sausage, we settled in the end that I would pay for the sausages the children half ate which were £7 supposedly. Anyway moral of the story, don’t waste your money there is a lot more places to eat around this area that are nicer and cheaper and staff who are polite and welcoming. This pub used to be a lovely place for Sunday dinners whoever is now running it now has ruined it, will not be back!

We are about to move into the area so thought we would try the local pub. Sunday dinner was OK iv had better. Mash potatoes lumpy however the meat was lovely. Young girl that served us was lovely and helpful. Its very short staffed and young kids not knowing what they doing. Outdoor needs renovating it's dismal to look at from the road. I suggest not trying to do too much at once ( just be a pub and food place) not trying big events. Shop, cafe, music, film, bike festival etc and sort out basics first e.g inside decor and outside kerb appeal and bistro food.

The webpage says this place is recently renovated- I’m so surprised to read this. I can’t see what’s been done or imagine what it was like before - it felt dark and tired and looks like it still needs a refresh. It’s easy to find on the main road but had no kerb appeal. There’s loads of parking and the staff were really lovely, helpful and friendly. But the reason we went… Sunday lunch… it was just very disappointing... and not cheap at that! The veg, of which there was plenty (wastefully so), was undercooked. The mash was hard and lumpy, the roast potatoes similarly undercooked and hard, stuffing balls dry and meat was chewy, fatty and equally undercooked. Gravy was totally delicious and we all wanted lots more of it to drown the other food items. But there was only a small gravy boat for the whole table. You needed one of these per person. Not per table. I don’t think we’ve had such a disappointing Sunday dinner since I forgot to defrost the roast joint at home and had to use deli meat slices in bisto gravy granules. It was all very sad and too expensive considering the overall quality.

This review is difficult to write as we have been biking to the old George for years on the last day of term from a near by village. The pub were aware we would be arriving and many of us would require food they organised the bbq menu as they normally do but the lack of choice was ridiculous ( in previous years the selection was fantastic. ) Due to lack of choice many people were ordering from the main menu. The landlady was very rude to many members of our party blaming us for all the late food which was coming out. At the end of the day if the menu for the bbq had been up To the usual standard we would have ordered from there. Yes if u are short staffed it’s a challenge and we would have been more than happy to wait if you had been polite and explained the situation. When you are front of house golden rule number 1. Always be polite to the customer. The attitude of the Landlady yesterday was Appalling. We put a great deal of money in your till last night and there is no cost for manners .

This lovely pub turned out to be the hub of the community in Sykehouse with everyone knowing everyone, welcoming strangers (us) & a friendly cat! The food that evening was delicious (he had a parmo-a speciality from the landlords roots) but the thing that stole the show was a simple but wonderful campsite in the huge field behind the pub. And the best bit was, was that rather than being blinded by outside lighting, we could see the stars (a rariety these days). Heavenly.

Excellent food and very good service. We were in the village of Sykehouse for the weekend and called in to the pub for coffee and cake. Very good value, excellent coffee and cake. The young landlady spent some time with us explaining what had happened recently to two nearby houses which had been on fire. The menu had a reasonably varied selection. My wife was very pleased with her haddock and chips and my fish pie was very good although I’ve never had a fish pie in a crust before. My only criticisms were that the vegetables should been more varied and a larger quantity and it could do with serving a decent bitter beer

I have not reviewed The Old George, Sykehouse for a number of years due to Lockdowns and being shielded during Covid. It is now under new ownership and is still a family owned pub. I had recommended that our two friends come with my wife and I for a meal, so had a lot riding on this. We were not disappointed. The owners, Rosie and John, could not be more welcoming and helpful, and this is backed up by the rest of the Chefs and Bar staff. The menu had a great range of Starters, Main meals and Desserts. I chose Breaded King Prawns with a Chilli Sauce Dip, then a main meal of Sirloin Steak with chips, etc. This was a perfect medium rare, and very tender. This was followed by a very tasty Creme Brulee. It had a great Saturday night atmosphere which impressed our friends. A must have for me, is easy parking. The parking area is very large with plenty of space for camping and caravans. This is a perfect village pub with a great mix of tradition and modernity.

Staying locally in a lovely cottage and the landlady recommended the old George, well thank you Sarah, the food, service, value all spot on. We ate twice and the Sunday lunch was amazing. The local rib of beef was cooked to perfection and the Yorkshire puddings and gravy would make James Martin smile! Service was faultless and Emily did us proud. Place was busy, buzzing with families and lots of satisfied customers, oh and very dog friendly. We will be returning soon. Well done Rosie

I visited on the 24th with my brother who has autism. We went for breakfast but didn’t realise that the shambles cafe was hosting breakfast with Santa. But this was not an issue, the staff placed us in the bar, which was lovely, welcoming and warm. Breakfast was a full English and we left full! Everything was fresh and good quality. However, the best part of the entire trip was the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff. Usually people talk to me, the carer, rather than my brother. It was so lovely and refreshing for staff to ask him what he wanted each time; even though I had to answer for him. They made a point of learning his name and one lovely lady even copied the Makaton sign for thank you, after observing us, use this sign a lot. It was one of the nicest outings we have had for a while and we will 100% be back.

Some of the play things are very tired and need renewing, but it’s all free so you can’t really argue. The pool is very clean but only two laddered entry points which could be an issue when very busy. Drinks were great, but didn’t try the food so could only rate it three stars, maybe a fourth star if they renewed the equipment.

We were looking for somewhere in this area to enjoy a Sunday roast dinner - a "real" pub out in the countryside. And this really did fit the bill. The reviews vary widely - people seem to love it or hate it. Certainly it is not a gastro pub, nor has it recently been refurbished or redecorated. And I can understand how people could be confused about where to sit or how the carvery works (for the record, you buy your carvery voucher and drinks at the bar, then head to the carvery). My advice would be to approach the bar and ask the staff there what you need to do and where you can get a table. We had called ahead to book, and our table was waiting for us, although it is a large pub with quite a few tables so there is likely to be one available even at a busy time. The food was tasty and generous. Three meats (beef, pork and turkey) with all the right accompaniments - horseradish, applesauce, cranberry sauce and a mint sauce. Serve yourself Yorkshire puddings, and your choice from a homemade meat pie, mashed and roast potatoes, mushy peas, a delicious mashed swede, cauliflower cheese, carrots, cabbage, stuffing and as much gravy as you want. One thing I particularly noticed was that at 1.30pm, there was plenty of everything - no scraping out the bottom of a dish of sauce or a container of veges; everything was topped up and plentiful. And the other thing you can't help but notice is the great price. For the price, you would struggle to find better. I guess the one downside might be that it is not that easy to find if you are not a local, and worth noting that there is more than one Old George Inn in this area (our satnav tried to direct us to the one in nearby Goole). But we were pleased we persevered.

Complete disappointment.I booked a table for me and my family. Upon arrival, not a single person came to our assistance. We found a table and sat down to then be told that we was sat in the wrong area and had to walk to the other end of the pub to the restaurant area. This wouldn't of been such a problem if 1. We hadn't just bought a round of drinks & 2. my elderly grandparents hadn't just sat down, took their coats off and got comfy. We went here as a family with my grandparents who used to live locally and used go to this pub often. They wanted a trip down memory lane and were upset that not everybody enjoyed it.The food was tasteless. I had Steak and Ale pie with chips. The pie had no taste at all, the gravy had more flavour. The chips were homemade but completely saturated in oil from the deep fat fryer. My grandparents had gammon which thankfully wasn't as bad. It was salty but tasted nice which was a relief as it would of been sad for them to have a bad meal too.The lady who tended to our table was very rude and sarcastic (short, curly hair)Not helpful at all. Quite patronising actually.Young blond waitress was very nice and helped in any way she could.I suppose this would be a nice place to go for a drink but certainly not for food.

Although on a Sunday a carvery is your only option, it's well worth going. Four people, four carveries, four drinks & just over a tenner each! The quantity and quality of the meat on your plate is astounding. There is a good choice of veggies, the roast potatoes were perfect & the Yorkshire puds as light as a feather. Another big plus is the size of the ladle for the gravy, you can get a really good amount in there: nothing worse than running out of good gravy too soon on your Sunday roast. Try to book a table, because it is popular, and with a roaring fire in winter, it's very welcoming.Top marks to the chef, great cooking.

Have been here for Sunday lunch on many occasions and can heartily recommend it . The meat selection is very good, on our visit yesterday, Turkey, Pork, Beef or home made Steak and Ale Pie. You can have as many roasties, mash, veg ,Yorkshire puds as you like and the quality is excellent . The Chef should be congratulated on the quality of the meat and all that goes with it. Will be back , no doubt about that .

Was a live band on when I went, plenty of drinks great atmosphere it's a locals pub so everyone knows everyone but that's not a bad thing! You can also get food from the takeaway next door and eat it in there which comes in handy when you've had a few and hungry! But nothing and to say

Stayed locally for one night and popped in for dinner. No fine dining here but good honest fare. It was steak night, so I had steak. A humongous plate of food appeared, tender meat cooked to my taste, fab chips, best onion rings I've ever eaten, with a side of salad, a cooked tomato and mushrooms, all for less £7. Brilliant value. It was twice as much as I normally eat but as I do hate waste... Food arrived quickly, the staff were great. I hear the Sunday Carvery is really good.

Used to come here years ago, and decided to pay a visit for a Sunday Carvery as we had heard good things about it.We were not disappointed, and will be returning, most likely for another carvery or a Fillet or T-bone steak !The beef, pork and turkey were so succulent and the portions very generous. Lots of HOT veg, including real mash and home made gravy. Alas no home made Yorkshire puds, but everything else made up for them. The desserts list was ample though we had no space for one . Staff were very friendly and efficient - we will be back

The Old George was recommended to us by a friend. They weren't joking when they told us you needed a good appetite! The portions are mighty enough to fill even the hungriest of people! You can book, or just turn up, however if busy expect to huddle in for a table! Pay for your lunch at the bar and queue up for your Sunday roast with your ticket! Nothing much of a wait. Prompt service with a smile, very affable landlord so willing to please. Usual meat choices are turkey, beef and pork. I think I may have seen pie as an option previously and you can pre-order vegetarian crumble for those who so wish. Veggies, Yorkshire Puds and the rest are help yourself. This is good old fashioned Sunday dinner without all the washing up! And with all the trimmings inc. gravy and all sauces to accompany the meats. Good customer service at the bar. Family run. Outdoor children's area and back garden for sitting out. Have visited a few times now. Our dogs love our leftovers each time we visit. Have also taken our in-laws a couple of times, who are equally impressed.Keep up the good work folks!By the way evening meals mid week are also excellent value, but was so full on my starter, could hardly manage my main course, so go with an empty tummy people!

We were a family of 17 staying in the area and went here for an evening meal staff very friendly, large play area for children in the back with beer garden. Food was very nice not a single complaint from any of us. Down side we returned on the Friday lunchtime for something to eat and there was no food on only night times a bit of a shame but weather was nice so we sat in the beer garden while children played for a few hours.

Went for a lunch time meal with a few friends. Food was average. I had lasagne which was a very small portion. This was served with garlic bread and 2 bowls of chips between 3 of us. Food was nothing special and lasagne could have been bigger. Worst things is that if you want to pay by debit card they charge you £1.50 which I think is a complete rip off. Overall ok food for a pub but make sure you have cash to pay!!!

I visited today 8th nov 2014 having booked a table for 6 adults and a highchair for my son. We arrived at 1pm for our reservation to be told that there wasn't a table ready which looking at the level of trade at the time was not ideal but unsurprising as it was busy but I did not however expect to wait 55 minutes to be seated, as a heavily pregnant woman with an extremely hungry 17 month old son having to stand around waiting this long was really difficult add to this the embarrassment of having what feels like the whole pub staring at you because you're child is screaming because he's hungry!! Had to buy crisps at the bar to placate him which thankfully the long queue of people waiting to pay for their own food allowed my friend to skip to the front to buy, which of course meant he would not eat all of his dinner when we were finally seated!! This was clearly not an isolated incident as whilst we were there I heard at least another 3 people all making the same types of complaint!! What is the point in taking bookings for tables if these tables are not availble!! I can't really comment much on the food as I was so stressed out by the time i had finally stood in line for it and got sat down that I didn't really eat much and to be honest just wanted to leave ASAP as I was feeling very embarrassed with all the looks from other customers who's nice relaxing Sunday lunch my sons screaming was interrupting!! So unfortunately will not be planning a return visit!!

Went on the spur of the moment for a quick bite in the evening. Although they didn't have the rib eye available, the sirloin was excellent. Perfectly cooked with fantastic fresh onion rings and mounds of home made chips. Partner had the chicken and steak sizzler which he rated highly. With drinks and a pudding the meal came in at £40.00 for the two of us. Seemed great value. The manageress was very friendly and helpful. Will go again definitely.

When we have to visit H in the looney bin we always visit here for the sunday carvery. The carvery is superb with ample sized plates and a wide selection of veg and no embargo on stuffing. The food and drink is very reasonably priced and whilst some idiots complain about the limestone car park ive always just got on with it. The landlord is always very friendly and makes everyone welcome including diddies who turn up in droves with their unruly kids jumping the queue. The portions are big so don't forget your tub-it

Had previously visited this pub before in the winter but there is a huge problem with the coal fire which belches smoke out into the room and after 10 minutes could not stand the stinging eyes and stench of smoke so had to leave. One of the locals on the way out told us its like this all the time - Health and Safety people need to pay a visit as this cannot be healthy for public to sit it. Saw an outdoor seating area as we were leaving and decided to give at another go in the summer - BIG mistake!!Visited again in early July, unwashed tables outside covered in Bird poo, overpriced greasy burgers and hot dogs with frozen chips, along with cheap and nasty watered down tomato ketchup, and a playground of tired old equipment. Never again !!

By far the worst pub experience I have ever had. The steak pie arrived burnt on the outside and cold in the middle, the chicken Kiev was raw and soggy , the chips looked like they had been cooked in very very old oil. To make matters worse when we took the food back to the kitchen their was a wheelbarrow full of bones outside The "children's play area" is run down, delapatated and a major health and safety risk. The outdoor pool although looks clean has a mouldy pool over sitting next to it.If you enjoy the fear of food poising and watching your children on rickety old play equipment that this is your ideal place.Despite leaving our food the best they were able to offer was more drinks - needless to say we declined the offer. We will NEVER be back !!

Old establishment The Old George at Sykehouse has long been a purveyor of good home cooked food..but its; been a while since i visited. However we visited today and were made welcome straight away by the owner who was slicing the meat on the carvery as we walked in. Good choice of turkey, beef and pork or pie of the day. Help yourselves to as much fresh veg, potatoes and puddings and all condiments and sauces.tasted lovely and excellent value at £7.99.Low beamed ceiling, stone wall fireplace with open fire and logs burning brightly on such a rainy . cold day , it was very homely and warmJust a tip, remember to take cash with you, I didn't know and it cost £1.50 c/c charge-think that catches a few people out...Sunday lunch served from 12-5pm.

Had an amazing Mother’s Day meal with my family (5 adults plus 2 children) today. We received a warm welcome on arrival and were shown to our table which was beautifully decorated. Service throughout was really good, the food was superb and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We enjoyed starters of soup, fish cakes, cheese parcels and garlic mushrooms followed by sea bass, chicken and pork with plenty of tasty vegetables (broccoli cauliflower carrots roast and mashed potatoes plus parsnips) to accompany our main courses. The desserts included chocolate mousse, Prosecco roulade and ice cream for the little ones. There were drinks to suit everyone too. All in all we had a superb meal in gorgeous surroundings served by the wonderful staff at the Bullrush Bistro. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant!!
