Gorgeous hotel. Lovely rooms. Even if staying for 2 nights room was cleaned. Reception staff all very welcoming. Only comment - first night arrived late and bar staff still managed to get a tea ready for my friend but on 2nd night asking for tea at a bar even earlier get an answer - all machines are switched off. 5 stars for a person working in bar on Tuesday evening.

I stayed at Owston Hall Hotel for one night midweek. The hotel is set in lovely, scenic grounds with a golf course. There is plenty of free parking, a bar and a restaurant. I had a Heritage Room and it was huge. It was very clean with a king bed, great bathroom and fast WiFi. I ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food and service was excellent. Breakfast was also very good. A special thanks to Julia on reception. I felt unwell and she was so helpful and considerate. This hotel is excellent value for money and I will definitely be returning. Very good food, certainly the best I’ve had in the area…….they obviously have an excellent chef/s. All let down a bit however by the service in the restaurant . Only x2 staff on a Saturday evening, one who was just too inexperienced (not his fault obviously!), the other on the verge of being quite rude! Only scores 4 because of the great food!

Third visit in 3 weeks previously service and food good. Monday 1st two young lads doing bar and food service they had no idea how to provide these. Didn’t know anything about menu just laughed and smiled a lot. Waiting ages for drinks then had to collect them then treated to talk on barman’s allergies. Main courses nothing special considering price toffee pudding had been microwaved to extinction and no sauce. Lots of people in jeans In lounge only one other table In restaurant. Very disappointed as we all live nearby and thought we had found a nice place to eat.

Attended a black tie evening with my family and friends. We were all made very welcome on arrival and the manager came and introduced himself and helped us order wine for our table. The food was exceptional and they dealt with the food allergies and vegetarian needs of our family with ease. The entertainment for the evening was a small vocal group who kept everyone entertained and involved through out the evening. Overall an excellent experience and I would recommend the restaurant highly.

Lunchtime Group booking for 8. Lacklustre welcome by a female member of staff at bar. Short mid-week lunch menu (Not shown on the website - just 'Dining' under Menus) Orders taken at table by same member of staff. We were the only diners in the large dining area (some refurbishment/repairs/decoration would be welcome.) Problems started as meals were served - The member of staff inadvertently knocked over a pint of Peroni and it soaked a large part of the dress and trousers of the couple sitting opposite. Of course, the member of staff was devastated and she promptly sourced cloths, a mop and attempted to dry the table and floor. Meanwhile, the other member of staff in the kitchen proceeded to serve the meals whilst 3 or 4 of us were still standing to allow space for 'drying-up!' Where was a manager to come to both support the young and evidently inexperienced member of staff as well as using their seniority and experience to attempt to help resolve the matter there and then? Meals served, a replacement Peroni brought, we were left to make the best of it! An experienced, professional manager would have returned very shortly to check that the meals were OK, whether the now, very moist couple may want a 'drink on the house', to share and show that they (the manager) was sincerely sorry for the accident and that they hoped it wouldn't totally spoil the rest of our meal experience.... NOTHING! No-one came to check whether meals - or we - were OK! Worse, there was a staff change-over around 3 pm and the younger staff member was replaced by a male manager. Had she shared what had happened on the changeover, then the manager would have surely come to the table at once? Nothing! We were left over half-an hour before he finally arrived to invite us to order any deserts. No explanation of the changeover. He then brought a floor-standing 'A' Board on which had been chalked the Desserts' list. Inevitably, those at the other end of the table couldn't see the items! It didn't occur to him that this could be solved by him reading out the items to us (or better still, for a smaller 'A' board that could be placed on the table!). He left us for a while to let us sort it out! We chose coffees and then the Bill. It was at that point we realised that he apparently knew nothing about the problems! I expressed my amazement to him and explained that I'd leave it with him to consider the most appropriate way to respond. After quite some time - perhaps whilst he sought to contact the other member of staff or Kitchen colleague - he offered a 10% reduction plus an invitation for the couple to have their damaged clothes dry-cleaned at Owston's expense. When he returned to table to explain this, he commented that perhaps it was the height of Peroni glasses that may have contributed to the problem! He simply did not show any sign of sincere apology or regret on behalf of Owston! In fact, almost no emotion at all! We'd split the bill between cash and 2 cards. He failed to offer receipts for the cards and was then unable to produce a receipt for the first card! I had to ask him to write down his offer of covering dry-cleaning costs - If the staff could fail to share events like ours on transition, I was concerned that there could possibly be a failure to recall the offer if it was left as a verbal offer. Restaurant visits aren't simply about food quality - it's about the whole experience from the welcome, the service - and the professionalism to deal sensitively, promptly and appropriately when accidents happen. A quality restaurant experience can be judged by the manner in which the establishment copes when things don't go smoothly. Owston simply didn't reach the mark!

I was invited to a thank you meal by some people whose relative I have been supporting during Covid lockdown. The menu was brief which means two things I have found; 1. that they do a few things well 2. it is all they feel they can do at present. My starter was a Charcuterie board, others had fried squid. My wooden board was well filled but it was no more than 3 Italian meats, some pate, cornichons, olives and bread. The fried squid and aoli was not generous. My main was to be fish but only when ordering was I told it was not available. Instead I went for a salad. I was brought a bizarre salad that I had not ordered of Halloumi, blue cheese and bacon. I'd ordered avocado and halloumi and the waitress seemed surprised I was not prepared to eat what was brought. The salad I got was really bland. We all skipped dessert but no one asked us anyway. No one checked me in so Covid secure? I was the only person, except staff and those who invited me wearing a mask inside the building. Lots of places are reopening and trying to make a mark. This was a significant disappointment and not good value (I saw the prices). One of my hosts said he ordered the burger as surely they couldn't get that wrong and he enjoyed it.

Thank you for a lovely birthday afternoon tea. Full marks for delicious afternoon teas provided by Owston Hall as a takeaway. We all enjoyed them - none of us could finish a whole one at once. We certainly got plenty for our money - and it was reasonably priced. The scones in particular were so light they almost floated off the plates. I paid extra to include "Fat Rascals" and I have to say they were better than the ones from "Betty's". Recommended.

Stayed here recently to visit family, given the facilities and style of the hotel it looked excellent value. The staff overall and food in the restaurant were both excellent as was the hot roast sandwich in the bar.The pool area is looking a bit the worse for wear and is in need of a revamp, broken floor tiles, mess and looks like it could do with a good clean. However, the sauna was great and jacuzzi worked just a bit cold. The bedroom we had was massive with an enormous bed, only heating is a small electric panel heater which came on at pre set times so not always warm, the bathroom however was an ice box, big towel rail but it was never on and the window wasn’t shut so a draft was blowing through, finally managed to shut and lock the window, after a lot of hassle, which made it a bit better but not brilliant.Overall good value for money and will stay again, will make sure towel rail worked next time.

It was huge - each person having a 3 tier stand of sandwiches, scone, jam, clotted cream and cakes with tea or coffee. Most places you would share this with some- one else. Some of us also had a glass of Prosecco. The afternoon tea was excellent value for the price and tasted divine. Most of us had a “doggy bag” to take home. The ambiance and service were lovely. They were also busy with a wedding and golfers drinking after their game and managed all this very well. I would return and recommend.

Owston Hall was the venue for mine & the hubby's 1st date 7.5yrs ago. It was then the venue for part of my hen do and our Wedding Venue. Every year on our anniversary we book a table in the restaurant (have been on other occasions too). Yesterday we celebrated our 5th anniversary and left hungry, disappointed and gutted that our anniversary tradition had ended. The 'Friday special' which my husband had decided on was unavailable despite us being the only patrons there and only 8pm. He ordered something else naturally, only for the waitress to return and inform us one of the side dishes he ordered was also unavailable. On arrival of the starters, the salt & pepper squid was raw and promptly sent back and the roast beef salad was a little fatty, lacked quality. I had the steak for my main and it was 'acceptable'. Sadly tho, I have eaten better in a harvester for half the price. The waiter looked as happy to be there as we were with the quality of the food.Sooo disappointed at the declining quality offered. Sadly, we wont be booking here for our 6th anniversary.

We tell reception just after 5pm that our curtains are falling down, they say they will Get them sorted. We walk back to the coach house in the rain at 9pm to find curtains still hanging off. Try to phone reception but find phone in room not working. So, walk back in rain to reception to explain room is not ready still. Then get told that a room is now available in main building ?? When I question why is room now available but wasnt at 5pm I'm told block bookings in place?????? But everything is ok because we've now been upgraded ???? Well it isn't as far as I'm concerned. I would of been happy with our original room. had we not had to repack at 9pm them get wet in rain and check-in to another room I'd of been very happy . Appreciate it's not the receptionist fault but not the country club hotel stay we're paying for or expected.
