Been eating and drinking at the Old Five Bells for over 15 years, a really lovely pub. However I have got to say and be honest the quality and portions has dropped off in the last six months. My partner and I went for Sunday lunch, although the beef and turkey were okay, the vegetables were very lacking in portion size and quality, Oh and no Yorkshire Pudding available. All very much out of a packet, the Cauliflower cheese was a single floret, 'Roast Potatoes' were small, more like potato wedges and definitely not on par with what used to be available. These were not even on par to Aunt Bessie's from a super market. A real shame but with two similar experiences since June, especially the portion size and quality. Maybe just maybe it's time fir a menu and kitchen re vamp? We will still visit the Old Five Nells and hope for the future.

Came in went through the bar all signs say order on app… we did after over 20mins went to find our drinks… lady on bar said she will start doing and got the ticket from the back of the bar… another lady apologised and said the machine wasn’t working but they obviously had the order… we checked our food was received as we ordered on app also… they said yes was fine… after over 40mins again we checked they said we where next… another 20mins and further food coming out went to check again as by this time the family was very hungry and having young kids was getting late we where then told the ovens had broken again sounding like another excuse for poor service and poor management or lack of… we are new to area and was hoping for a nice local which was a shame as the place seemed nice just let down by extremely slow and poor service and this was a fairly quiet Tuesday evening 🤦🏻‍♂️👎 we requested money back for the food in the end and got fish and chips from end of that road… A generic reply to the original review to get in contact and discuss which I sent an email apologising for for the bad review but it was terrible service and was happy to discuss further but after the email was sent was fully ignored again same service as in the actual pub shocking 😮 so no we will not give them a 2nd chance

Nice little pub. The servers masion and Duncan really made our experience so much better as they couldn't of done enough for us. The service that they both provided was perfect. Very polite and welcoming. They both deserve recognition for all they do.

The service was great. Steak had a lot of gristle going through it, unfortunately, and they didn't have a few items on the menu. However, that being said, it's a nice place to go for food and a few drinks.

Booked a table and this was available. We listed our order and went to bar to order only to find out some items were sold out. This should have been communicated when menus were given out. So re-chose and ordered. Food arrived with some delays as the grill broke. We lost a kiddies jacket so walked round the garden to look for it and we were surprised at the amount of litter. I think its an example of a manager not having enough staff/resources to do everything perfectly. The staff were very polite. All in all cheap and cheerful, you get what you pay for.

Definitely not up to expectations. Our 1st and last time we will be going. Over all, it's a pub, quite old, but doesn't know if it's meant to be in the past or present, decor is quite outdated, the chair I had was very dodgy, felt like it was going to come apart. The menu was alright, but the food took ages to arrive, we went in at 1:30pm, got seated, ordered food. The food arrived an hour later. Reasonable portions, but the chicken burger my son had was as thin as paper, I had the fish cakes, quite small and unimpressed, the missus had the gammon, that looked great. The table was sticky, cutlery definitely didn't look the cleanest. Over all, expensive and disappointing

Nice place for a value for money meal in nice surroundings

Garlic bread with 1 meal came out hard as brick, chips were cold with another. They were promptly replaced but the mixed grill which was also ordered was very poor. The manager refunded part of our bill and gave us a free drink. The service was impeccable and very friendly and they sorted everything out ASAP. Willing to give it another try as maybe just having a very busy day.

Absolutely incredible experience, chatting with the staff made it feel just like I was at a bar back in Chicago, even if I did need some clarification through the accent sometimes lol hope you guys nothing but the best, keep it up! And hope my server calista(I think) gets to do her dream New York to Miami road trip!

Decent pub grub in a good environment, the common standard in this place. But was wowed by the service with the bartender Claudia who went above and beyond for myself, helping me customise my order and even recommending pints and dishes. Absolute credit to this pub👍🏽

Our gardeners enjoyed an absolutely gorgeous buffet lunch prepared for us. Three plates of tasty filled, freshly cut sandwiches on various breads, quiche and, pork pie plus hot chicken strips (amazing!) and big bowls of chips - crispy and delicious! There was even cakes, tea and coffee too. A beautiful spread and a warm welcome from Elise. Thank you so much to her and to Laura for her kindness. Happily Recommended 😊

At a local hotel for a wedding but was recommended the pub for a meal the night before was pre booked 13 in total confusion as to where we were sitting staff didn’t know eventually found our seats meals weren’t all booked together but one after another,we didn’t expect them all to come together but of the meals I booked some did but everyone had nearly finished eating when the final meal arrived and it was barely warm .A young male waiter brought one meal out carrying it with a tea towel and handed across the table to a guest without saying a word consequently burnt her fingers and even then he just turned away without an apology.I did complain about the wait for the final meal and was refunded the cost of two meals.A bad start for our weekend We were in at 7.30 and 2 of the party wanted fish and chips but there weren’t any bad that early on a night

Very friendly staff. So much so I left my debit card in the card machine as chatting too much. Didn’t realise I had done that for four days when noticed it was missing. Staff kept it for me and so thankful to them.

Very friendly staff with a great sense of humour. The food was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed. Big TV screen for those that wanted to watch the football but volume down so it didn't interfere with those who didn't want to watch/hear it. Lovely pub garden.

Came here for lunch, had steak, guy servings was great , very friendly, food was pretty good, there was one guy who kept coming to the table to take our plates as we were still eating?? Don’t get that when he could see we hadn’t finished, other than that lovely place

Disaster from start to finish. Waited almost 2 hours for starters. Came - one with a random sauce. Other luke warm. Sent back. 2nd time, both luke warm. Decided at this point to cut our losses and visit the local chippy. Which is not what we wanted to do to celebrate Father's day. Quite a few other tables with issues and food being returned. Such a shame. In all fairness we didn't have to pay. But would have much rather had a decent meal.

This has the potential to be one of the best pubs. The garden is perfect for the summer. However, it is consistently short staffed, long waits for food over an hour and a half today and it wasn’t overly busy. Staff aren’t happy and customer service isn’t great and never with a smile. I actually had the bar man roll his eyes at me today when I asked about something on the menu! The lack of training is obvious and there is also no initiative. Staff bring food out but don’t think to clear tables on their way back, often leaving empty handed! The staff corner had someone laying down across the seats today. I appreciate this is a staff space to have a break but as it’s open for the customers to see, it doesn’t look great when there is a member of staff completely sprawled out across the seats. Such a shame as the potential for this pub is enormous! However, the above won’t stop us visiting as we do enjoy sitting in the garden in the summer and it’s walkable but there are definitely improvements to be made. Also the katsu curry is always stunning here so I would recommend that dish if you are visiting.

Good for watching sport, lots of screens. Also quite family friendly and relaxed. However, Saturday night, food took an age to arrive (well over an hour) and is average at best. Rather chaotic service, items missing, had to protest to get the kids desserts that were included in the price we'd already paid. And if there are a few of you at the same table, don't expect to eat at the same time.

Lovely lunch in here yesterday good value it's a nice pub and lovely staff dog friendly too...took one star off as there was no napkins with knives and forks the ladies toilets could do with a paint as there are a lot of undesirable stains up the walls ....just small issues other then that great thank you

Had the worst experience for our first visit to this pub yesterday. Booked a table for 6 at 5pm for my partners birthday. Ordered food at 5.20pm-4 roasts & 2 fish n chips. 6.30pm still no food not even our starter despite noticing other people who arrived after us already had there food, approached staff who apologised & said wouldn't be long & offered complimentary drinks. 6.50pm get approached to tell us they didn't have enough lamb shanks so to choose other option (took 1 hour & half to realise this) by now waited over hour n half for our food. 7.10pm our food finally comes out, the roast dinners the veg was stone cold & the lamb shanks were not only cold but well over cooked thick with grease & did not taste of lamb, the tiniest cup of gravy which was conjeeled & wouldnt have even covered a third of the meal, a flat burnt yorkshire pudding & roast potatos i suspect were frozen ones as not fresh. The fish n chips the fish was rock hard & probably been sat under heat lamp for over an hour-we couldn't eat any of it as completely inedible-at best a microwave meal by all accounts. A young girl who we can only presume was a manager sincerely apologised & refunded us our full bill-it wasnt her fault & full blame lies with the so called chef!! 2 hours waiting for the worse meal & service I have ever had. We had 6 very hungry people who had to resort in going home with a take away & finally eating at 8.30pm. Shame as only just moved to area so could have easily become our local.

Staff very attentive and sensitive to the occasion. We held a wake and were given a private space. The food was an excellent spread for a reasonable price.

Decided to try the food here again one lunch time after a few years ago when I went it was pretty rough & I never returned (for food) I was very pleasantly surprised the food is lovely & such great value for money! Moved over the road a year ago and have genuinely had some of my favourite nights of the last year in this pub. Amazing team, great vibes and some incredible balloon art! Elise and the Team are genuinely amazing and you should 100% come down!

After spending the afternoon here with my family and friends, my son left his new book behind. We didn’t realise this until a few hours later. I went back to the pub to have a look myself but with no luck. I spoke to the team behind the bar and they let me know they had not received it either. I left my number with Elise, the covering manager, and she assured me that she would be in touch if she was to come across it. Another two hours had passed by the time I got a call to say that Elise had found the book and would keep it behind the bar for when I arrived. A small gesture to most but a massive one to a 2 year old who was looking for his new book for the afternoon! Thank you Elise for cheering my son up!

12 of us had dinner in the five bells last night, 6 adults the rest children. Upon ordering food we were told the wait time would be 45 minutes so we ordered the kids food first then our own when the kids food came out everything was cold or undercooked. I ordered the adults food at 6.52pm and it was served between 8:20-8:40pm none of us got our food at the same time despite ordering within 5 minutes of each-other. There was only two servers on and the pub was quite busy, the food was mediocre. There was no apology for delay or mistakes only excuses. A beautiful pub with such potential but lacks direction. It would have been nice if we were offered a discount of free drink for the delay & undercooked food.

Three stars, I think it's fair, unfortunately, but I waited 40 minutes for the fries themselves, and the portion came burnt, and for the money, it's really very small. The decor is ok but the seats are old

Stopped at the Old Five Bells for Sunday lunch with my husband and elderly parents last weekend, wish we hadn’t bothered! We got there early and went to get a table. Walked into the conservatory and saw the state of the cushions, lining all ripped on edge exposing dirty foam and decided to sit in the front bar area. Ordered some drinks whilst looking at the Sunday Menu, nothing grabbed our fancy so decided to finish drinks and leave. Food was delivered to the table next to us and it didn’t look great so that confirmed our decision to leave. Such a shame as this used to be a great local for drinks and food.

5 adults 5 children just walked in and catered for without any fuss whatsoever. Very friendly & extremely helpful staff. Children's food was brilliant and the adults was even better. Very morish puddings. 2 & 1/2 hours blew by without a hitch and everyone enjoyed it. The Neck Oil was also on top form. Will definitely go back on the next Beeches trip. Children's age range 2 to 10, they loved it. Can't wait for spring.

Visited for dinner and a drink last night 6th February 2024 with my wife and another couple. Great customer service by Matt and Isabella and the food was superb and I was told the chef was Jay . So top marks to the chef as well and will be back sooner rather than later. Great pub . Keep up the great work and team spirit.

I am very disappointed in this pub. The food come out cold not even cooked. It was literally a microwave meal. The service was really bad. The amount of food you get is ridiculous, 4 potatoes frozen carrots. Raw parsnips. Potatoes are dry. 2 bits of meat. I can make 2 chicken nuggest from the chicken. We asked for more gravy, they said they are doing it so we waited as we needed it for our food and we waited 20-30 minutes for gravy and she said she is doing it now. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DONE COME HERE!!!

After having a very stressful day at the office I came into my local and had some food and a bottle of wine. Upon arriving I was greeted by Isobelle. It was nice and warm and had a meal which was very nice. Later in the afternoon the chef, Matt, came to serve on the bar & may I say his service and people skills are more deserved of Front Of House than Back Of House. Overall the two individuals who I have named made my experience enjoyable and if there is any company rewards scheme then these two persons should be rewarded. They are an asset to the Greene King company and thus should be rewarded.

Nice place. Visited one evening between Christmas and New Year. No mulled wine or mulled cyder despite being on table menus. In craft beer, Ipa, pale ale terms, it was the Green King Ipa or a real ale version.

Spending Christmas alone this year, I decided to eat out for Christmas lunch. I must say I was not disappointed. A warm and friendly greeting from other diners as well as the fantastic staff. Fantastic real ales and cold fresh white wine were the drinks order for today. I had a 3 course dinner with Ham hock starter, Sea Bass and Prawns as a main. Followed by a very tasty Cheese board. 10-10 guys well done. A massive thank you to Elise and all the staff. Merry Christmas All

I am writing this review to compliment Greene King for employing Matt, who has exemplary customer service skills. Matt is consistently polite, professional and good humoured, even if he is under pressure. He is a marvellous team player, often assisting his colleagues when they are having trouble navigating the till or dealing with a customer issue. I would expect it is hard to find such a dedicated individual, and I would encourage your company to promote him; he deserves this.
